a clash of opinions. many people are spending the night in jail tonight after a pro-trump and anti-trump demonstration turned violent in berkeley. good evening. i'm eric thomas. tonight things have calmed down, but the police work is just beginning. the clashes began at martin luther king civic center park this morning and quickly moved into the streets. berkeley police say 44 people were arrested -- excuse me. 21 people were arrested and 11 people were injured. abc7 news report lisa m has our story from berkeley. >> reporter: they call themselves the patriots and when one of their group was arrested, they waited hours for him to bail out before leaving for southern california. berkeley police arrested 21 people today even though more was done to stop this. [ gunshots ] >> the chaos that erupted when the two sides clashed in civic center park. police tried to keep the groups apart.

they set up orange fencing, boundary lines if you will. they banned and confiscated anything they considered dangerous. flagpoles, broom handles, rocks, shields. 11 people were hurt, and one was stabbed. did you feel like you guys were overwhelmed? >> i think that we were able to manage the situation, especially when we got the assistance of mutual aid from the county. >> reporter: in other words, staffing was up. about 250 officers blankets the area, but they still couldn't stop all the fights. masses of people used a large trash can as a weapon. both sides felt attacked. >> the racists that were here, you know, were bragging about driving for hours and hours and hours to come here to assault people. >> i think we should have the right to defend ourselves if they try to attack us. >> reporter: many also felt police didn't do enough to help or to stop the violence. a notion police dismiss,

[ crowd chanting ] >> reporter: people from around the bay area converged on market street to join a day of demonstrations across the country. they're calling on president donald trump to fulfill one of his campaign promises.

>> i will release my tax returns against my lawyer's wishes. >> reporter: many openly mocked the president. >> the chicken mask is because donald trump is afraid to show his taxes, and he's being a chicken. >> chicken trump. show us your taxes, you chicken. >> reporter: san francisco supervisor jane kim took it a step further, calling the president a threat to california values. >> and i'm not afraid to call trump an enemy of this state. >> reporter: minority leader nancy pelosi joined the march and was the key note speaker at the pre-march rally. she said these events will also put pressure on her congressional colleagues. even when all these people turning out, do you think he's going to release them? >> it's not a question of him. it's a question of how long the republicans in congress will protect him. there's the ones what could vote to make it happen. >> reporter: this peaceful march stretched for a few city blocks or math street. it included participate

there was a shortage of what northeastern who voic anyone who voiced support for the president. what do we want? when do we want them? >> abc7 news was in palo alto when several groups echoed the calls for president trump to release his tax returns. peace activists also spoke out against the president's plan to boost military spending by $54 billion. >> at the same time, he's proposing to cut all the other departments, the ones that actually do good things for people, to propose spending $54 billion additional on useless wars around the country is an outrage. >> protesters called on apple and other tech companies to cut off financial support to republican leaders as well. the same or similar protests took place across the country. tens of thousands hit the street

from l.a. to d.c. to put pressure on the president to make good on his campaign promise to release his tax returns. >> it's something we want to see him do is release his taxes. >> it's just an integrity thing because we're in the military. we were required to show any and every bit of information about ourselves, and it showed our integrity and our commitment. >> mr. trump has said americans don't care at all about his tax returns. polls show nearly 75% of americans believe he should release them. developing news tonight, vice president mike pence is in seoul, south korea. he arrived about 15 minutes ago. it's his first stop on his asian-pacific tour as vice president to highlight the trump administration's agenda. his arrival comes hours after north korea launched a ballistic missile that blew up almost immediately. abc news reporter brian clark has the latest on the rising tensions. ♪ >> reporter: on his nation's most patriotic holiday, north korea's dictator, kim jong-un, presided over a grandpa ra para.

as expected, the holiday was marked by the launch of a missile, which exploded immediately after liftoff. that makes it hard for experts to figure out what kind of missile it was. >> was it an old missile that they were just testing for show, or was it the new missile that could directly influence or target the united states? >> reporter: it's a huge embarrassment for the pyongyang ich has been engaged in a war of words with washington. >> north korea is a problem. the problem will be taken care of. >> reporter: saturday's parade featured canisters large enough to hold what may be a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile, and for the first time up close, submarine-launched missiles. the north koreans are trying to develop missiles that would reach the u.s. and already have weapons that could threaten japan and south korea, where more than 80,000 u. troops are braced. >> their missiles continue to get bigger, longer range, and eventually they're going to build something that can reach the continental 48. >> reporter: a u.s. aircraft carrier battle group is steaming

towards the region, and american troops are conducting military exercises at the south korean border with the north. north korea's second most senior official saying donald trump is creating a war situation, and north korea is prepared for all-out war, including a nuclear attack. brian clark, abc news, new york. milpitas police have recovered a football autographed by 49ers hall of famer jerry rice which was stolen from a fund-raiser to benefit orphaned special needs children in china. 45-year-old patrick lam of san jose brought the football to the milpitas police department where he surrendered after he became aware he had been caught on surveillance cameras. video shows him at a seafood restaurant, taking the football and walking out. a woman had just bid $3,500 for it. detectives believe lam worked in tandem with another person. investigators want to know what sparked a fire that broke out in a storage yard for used cars and vehicles being scrapped in fremont. sky7 flew above the scene at the west end of stevenson boulevard.

that fire scorched about 20 cars before it was contained. firefighters had to cut through a gate to get to the scene. they also had to stretch hoses over a long distance to reach the nearest hydrant. cell phone video captured a fire consuming a large home while firefighters raced to the scene in los altos. flamed gutted the home on ca see ta way around 4:15 this afternoon. nobody was hurt. it took crews about 45 minutes to put the fire out. investigators haven't said yet what started the fire. all the rain we've been seeing these last few weeks is still causing problems on the roads. abc7 news was in berkeley where a sinkhole about the size of a stop sign opened up today on tunnel road. the road is blocked off between bridge and vicente roads and there are major delays. caltrans is working to fix it. did you enjoy the weather today? well, more rain could be coming. a live look outside right now from our golden gate bridge camera. things look pretty good out there, but i sense there's something lurking off the coast. meteorologist drew tuma. >> that's exactly right.

we're tracking our next storm system. that will bring a few showers, light in nature, to the region to round out the weekend. live doppler 7 is showing it's a really quiet picture. that live look outside at the golden gate bridge was dry. overhead right now we're not finding any rain. just off the coast like eric alluded to, live doppler 7, that's our storm system for sunday. not a lot of moisture, but it will impact some of your outdoor plans. so on the storm impact scale, this is going to be a 1. this is a light system headed our way on sunday. we expect the showers to be light and scattered in nature. most areas less than a quarter of an inch of rain. but the winds will turn a little bit breezy right along the immediate coastline. we're going to go hour by hour on future weather, show you when those drops hit your neighborhood where you live coming up in that full forecast. eric? >> drew, thanks. ♪ abc7 news was at grace cathedral in san francisco's knob hill tonight for its easter vigil this holy saturday.

those are french military jets soaring above the golden gate bridge tonight. the aviators are part of an elite aerobattic team. they've been touring the u.s. to honor the 100th anniversary of america entering world war i. a french tourist joined other admirers at the bridge. dpl h. >> this is pretty great. i'm french. i'm a big fan of these guys, try to see them every chance i get when i go back home. this is a great opportunity. >> french pilots also flew over the state capitol earlier today. they've already met with the navy's blue angels. next week they'll meet the air force thunderbirds. a group of surfers plan to stay in the water all night to help fight cancer. abc7 news was in santa cruz when members of the ghost riders watermen club began their 24-hour relay. they hope to raise $10,000 to help local cancer patients. >> we all know people or someone

who has battled cancer and, you know, it's really a tough deal they're going through. we want to show support. we want to bring the community together. we want to, you know, go out and different it our all, all night long, 24 hours. >> so far the ghost riders have raised more than they tell us they were inspired by a similar fund-raiser in seattle two years ago. a santa cruz surfing instructor is credited with rescuing a sea lion pup off pleasant point beach. this is video not long after he spotted in the water. he said the waves kept throwing the pup up on to the rocks. eventually it swam to him and latched his flippers on to his leg. he brought it to shore while waitng for volunteers to arrive. they say he's thriving in rehab and on his way to a full recovery. the golden state warriors have a new playoff motto as they try to reach the nba finals for

because of audio issues. now your accuweather forecast with drew tuma. >> in accuweather tonight, we are tracking just a few showers that will be moving through primarily in your afternoon time on sunday. live doppler 7 showing you out there right now. it's a pretty quiet picture. we have the cloud cover in place for much of the evening, but right now the clouds not giving way to any drops. outside we go. showing you the beautiful lights of the bay area. san francisco in the foreground. great visibility. you can see oakland fine in the background. and it's really going to be some light showers. the small umbrella is all you're going to need as you're out and about on your sunday. out there right now with the cloud cover overhead, the numbers have been very slow to drop out there. it's mild, 57 the current number in oakland. we're holding at 59 in san jose. 58 in san francisco. antioch checking in at 54 degrees. overnight tonight, here are your lows. not falling too far from where we are right now. but you do notice the clouds will be increasing, and we will have some showers moving through tomorrow.

i should say today, on sunday. storm impact scale, here we go. some light showers sunday. less than a quarter of an inch for most areas. really not a lot of rain. just kind of an inconvenient timing on our outdoor plans sunday. breezy along the costs. those winds at time will be gusting over 20 miles per hour. future weather, as we're going into sunday morning, 10:00 in the morning, much of the activity focused well north of santa rosa. could see a rogue sprinkle ahead of the main system early in the bay area. really it's going to hold off until the afternoon. it's really sporadic. it's scattered in nature, really an undefined storm system. so on and off light showers through 3:00. last thing through 6:00. here's the tail end of the system kind of wrapping as as we approach 10:00 on sunday. future track rainfall amounts showing you not a lot of rain by any means. you can see most spots ending up with less than a quarter inch of rain. a lot will likely evaporate before reaching the surface.

and boston's mayor placed a wreath at the spot where the site of attack took place. this year's boston marathon will take place on monday. the world's oldest person died today at 117 years of age. this is video of emma morano celebrating her last birthday in november. the italian woman was officially the last person born in the 1800s who is still alive. morano attributed her longevity to genetics and a diet of three eggs a day, two of them raw. her life spanned three centuries and two world wars. the world's oldest human being title now belongs
