and good morning. it is easter sunday, april 16. i'm kate lawson in for carolyn. good morning, francis. happy easter. >> happy easter. happy easter, everyone. this has acted like a blanket overnight so temperatures right now quite a bit milder than they were yesterday at this time. lots of 50s out there, 53 in san francisco, 53 in hayward, 56 in san jose. we're going to talk about the storm today. it is a ranked 1. it's a light storm, light showers, less than a quarter inch from most areas, breezy at the coast. here's how the day plays out with the sunrise at 6:32.

still dry. showers arrive late morning to midday to noon and then we have showers continuing into the afternoon with an isolated one lingering this evening. temperatures a lot cooler, so grab an extra layer. we're only going to hit the low 60s inland, upper 60s at the bay. breaking news out of where there was a shooting at a house party. someone at a house across the street on calhoun street opened fire shortly after midnight. the suspect vehicle described only as a four-door car was gone. the incident remains under investigation. we have developing news in san jose. two people were taken to a trauma center after being injured in a motel fire. just before 12:30, a fire was

reported coming from casa linda hotel. there were no other injuries. arson investigators are on scene. berkeley police say there are likely to be more arrests to come following friday's protesting against anti-trump forces. berkeley police say 11 people were injured and 21 people were. >> the racists were here were bragging about driving for hours and hours and hours to come here to assault people. >> i think we should have the right to defend ourselves if they try to attack us. >> reporter: many also felt police didn't do enough to help or stop the violence. a notice police dismissed insisting arrests were made and more will likely come. in berkeley, abc 7 news.

those protests made bart close down its downtown station. it was reopened at 4:30. you can enable push alerts for instant updates on your mobile devices. now, there was another local anti-trump rally on saturday, but this one was relatively peaceful. on the last weekend before tax day on tuesday, people took to the streets in san francisco to call on president trump to release his tax returns. abc 7 news reporter contana was there. >> reporter: people diverged around the country. they're calling on president trump to fulfill one of his campaign promises. >> i will release my tax returns against my lawyer's wishes.

>> reporter: many openly mocked the president. >> the chicken mask is because donald trump is afraid to show his taxes and he's being a chicken. chicken trump! show us your taxes, you chicken! >> this lady took it a step further, calling trump a threat to american values. minority leader nancy pelosi joined the march and was the keynote speaker at the pre-march rally. she said these events will also put pressure on her conventional colleagues. with all these people turning out, do you think he's going to release them? >> it's how long the republicans in congress will protect him. they're the ones who can vote to make it happen. >> reporter: this peaceful march stretched for a few city blacks on market street. it included clever protest signs and no shortage of troubled citizens. >> ever since trump was elected, it feels like everything turned

upside down and i want to make it right again. >>. >> what do we want? >> abc 7 news was in palo alto when several groups echoed the call for president trump to release his tax returns. peace activists also spoke out against the president's plan to boost military spending by $54 million. >> at the same time he's proposing to cut all the other departments, the ones that actually do good things for people, to propose spending $54 billion additional on useless wars around the country is an outrage. >> protesters called on apple and other tech companies to cut off financial support to republican leaders as well. the same anti-trump tax day protest took place across the country. tens of thousands hit the street from l.a. to d.c. to put

pressure on president trump to make good on his campaign promise to release his tax returns. >> something we want to see him do is release his taxes. >> it's just an integrity thing. we were in the military. we were required to show any and every bit of information about ourselves, and it showed our integrity and our commitment. >> trump has said americans don't care at all about his tax returns, but polls show nearly 75% of americans believe he should release them. a white house foreign policy adviser says the trump administration will not have a formal response to the failed launch of a north korean medium range missile. the adviser says there is no need to reinforce the failure which came after a massive military demonstration in the country's capital. abc 7's news reporter brian clark has the latest. >> reporter: on his nation's most patriotic holiday, north korea's dictator, kim jong-un, presided over a grandpa raid

devote to showing off his military's might. as expected, the holiday was marked by the launch of a missile which exploded immediately after liftoff. that makes it hard for experts to figure out what kind of missile it was. was it an old missile they were just testing for show, or was it the new missile that could directly influence or target the united states? it's a huge embarrassment for the pyongyang regime which has been engaged in a war of words with washington. >> north korea is the problem. the problem will be taken care of. >> reporter: saturday's parade features canisters of what may be a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile, and up close, submarine vessels. they're trying to develop missiles that would reach the u.s. and already have weapons that could threaten japan and south korea, where their missiles are based. >> their missiles are going to be long range and eventually they'll reach the 48.

>> reporter: american troops are conducting military exercises at the south korean border with the north. north korea saying donald trump is creating a war situation and north korea is prepared for all-out war, including a nuclear attack. brian clark, abc news, new york. police have recovered a football autographed by all of famer jerry rice stolen from a fundraiser to benefit orphaned special needs children in china. patrick lamm brought the football to the police department where he surrendered after realizing he was caught on surveillance cameras taking the ball. video shows lamm taking the football and walking out. a woman had just bid $3500 to buy it. detectives believe lamm worked in tandem with another investigators want to find out what sparked a fire that

broke out in a scrapyard carrying used vehicles in fremont. it started at the west end of stev stevenson boulevard. the fire scorched about 20 cars before being contained. firemen had to cut out a gate to reach the scene. they also had to stretch a hose a long distance to reach the first hydrant. a fire consumed a large home while firefighters raced to the scene in los altos. fortunately, nobody was hurt. it took crews about 45 minutes to put out those flames. investigators haven't said what sparked the fire. all the rain we've been seeing the last few weeks is still causing problems on our roads. abc 7 news was in berkeley where a sinkhole about the size of a stop sign right there opened up yesterday on tunnel road. caltrans worked to fix the road which was blocked off westbound between bridge and vicente roads causing major delays yesterday.

resurrection. french military jets soared above the golden gate bridge yesterday. the aif elite air nautical team. the french joined other admirers at the bridge. >> this is pretty great. i'm french. i fly planes as well in my spare time, so this is really fun. i'm a big fan of these guys and i see them any chance i get when i go back home. i get to see them over the golden gate bridge. >> always nice to see planes flying over the bridge. the french pilots also flew over the state capitol. they already met with the blue angels and will meet with the thunderbirds. abc 7 news was in san diego

when they began their 24-hour relay yesterday. they hope to raise $10,000 to help local cancer patients. >> we all know people or someone who has battled cancer. it's really a tough deal they're going through, and we want to show support, we want to bring the community together. we want to go out and give it our all, all night long, 24 hours. >> so far the ghost riders have raised more than $8700. they tell us they were inspired by a similar fundraiser in seattle two years ago. a santa cruz surfing instructor is credited with rescuing a sea lion pup at pleasant point beach. this is video with the pup not long after they spotted it in the water at high tide. the waves kept throwing the pup into the rocks as he tried to get onto land. he latched himself to his leg, so sweet.

he brought him to shore and tried to keep him warm. he is on his way to a full recovery. the golden state warriors have a new playoff motto as they try to reach the nba playoffs for the third year in a row. abc 7 news was inside oracle arena when workers put golden warriors t-shirts on every seat. it took 40 people about three hours to place those shirts on oracle arena's 19,000-plus seats. this year's playoff motto is is defend our ground. the team encourages fans to arrive early today. the a's also play at the coliseum this afternoon. tipoffs for the warriors is at 12:30 and first pitch for the a's is at 1:05. if you don't have tickets, abc 7 is the only place to watch portland take on the doves in game 1 of the playoffs. our coverage begins at noon, then stay with us after the game followed by abc 7 news at 5:00.

believe. >> one day after "star wars" fans got treated to a sneak peek of the newest movie "the last jedi," disneyland has a last look at its brand new ride at disneyland. the creator showed this video at the celebration in florida, commemorating 40 years since the last creation of a new hope. construction still has a ways to go, but they did show images of what the park will eventually look like. you'll have to wait until 2019, a few more years, to enjoy it in person. disney is, of course, the parent company of "star wars" and abc

7. there are several easter events around the bay area today and one not to be missed is the annual easter day parade and celebration here in san francisco. it's a blast, as you can see from these scenes of last year's parade. the event begins at 10:00 a.m. this morning and the parade ends around 2:00. there are plenty of activities for all the kiddos and the family, including a petting zoo and a visit from the all-important easter bunny. good easter morning. here's a look at live doppler 7 with a satellite image. you'll notice increasing cloud cover right now and this has acted like a blanket, so overnight temperatures quite a bit milder. in fact, we're about 11 degrees milder in half moon bay, so temperatures right now are running in the 50s for many areas. a live shot at bay bridge for you. in san francisco it's 55, oakland 54, mountain view 53,

san jose 56 and half moon bay near 50. another beautiful shot from our roof camera looking out towards the bay bridge once again. there are some areas that are a little bit cooler like the inland areas. 48, fairfield 46, concord 51 degrees. here we're looking at san francisco from sutro. we're going to see some scattered showers that move in late this morning. a chance of rain continues through wednesday, but then get ready for sunny and warmer weather by the end of the week. we'll be looking forward to that. here's abc 7's exclusive storm impact scale. for today, mainly light showers. it's really lost its punch, this storm. we're talking about a quarter of an inch for areas, maybe less than that. breezy at the coast, up to 30 miles an hour. 6:00 still dry. in fact, even by 9:00 with increasing clouds, we could just see a few sprinkles in the north bay, but by noon we'll start to see the showers for most

neighborhoods. could be a little bit heavy in the areas of darker green at times, but notice by 1:00, the heaviest rain will probably see your heaviest showers is between noon and 3:00. so 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 it starts to move east and we'll see the heavier rain move east of our area past livermore and then things start to peter out by this evening. rainfall amounts have really diminished, so maybe less than a tenth of an inch for most neighborhoods. hayward about .11 of an inch and a very small amount in san jose as well. so today's highs will be on the cool side even though we're not getting too much rain. san francisco, look for 57 this afternoon, oakland 59, san jose 62. so i think you can probably bear the showers today. it's still going to be a good easter overall. if you do want to do something outdoors, now is a good time. so we've got the light showers late this morning into this afternoon, and temperatures much

vice president mike pence is in south korea this morning, the first stop on a 10-day, four-nation trip to asia. pence, the son of a korean war veteran, attended easter services with u.s. troops, then visited the national war cemetary. his intent it to show support for the military with against north korea. many people are dealing with the aftermath of a suicide bombing. it rocked the area where people were trying to escape. abc 7 news reporter jennifer eggleston has the story. >> reporter: a suicide bomb engulfing the scene in flames. rescue teams said at least 100 dead just outside aleppo. innocent children bloodied by the blast among the casualties.

it's been four years since the bomb killed four people and injured 250 others at the finish line of the boston marathon bomb. a bell rang at boston's old south church at the times the blast ripped through the crowded sidewalks. the governor of massachusetts and boston's mayor placed a wreath at the spot where the site of the attack took place. this year's boston marathon will take place tomorrow. the world's oldest person has died at 117 years old. this is video of emma morano celebrating her last birthday in november. the italian woman was officially the last person born in the 1800s who was still alive. morano attributed her longevity to genetics and a diet of three eggs a day, two of them raw. her life

and two world wars. there are plenty of reasons to want to visit new orleans, and here's another to add to the list. legendary new orleans restaurant arno's bar in the heart of the french quarter just installed a champagne vending machine. look at it right there. the restaurant says it is the first in the country that has a machine anything like this and will dispense many bottles of imperial brew for $20 a pop, and since this is new orleans, you can pop the champagne and just head right on into bourbon street if you want. it's not unusual to work out, of course, wearing headphones, but the san francisco giants are trying on a pair that's about much more than listening to music. in fact, about the ears. abc 7 news reporter jonathan bloom explains how these headphones talk directly to the brain. >> reporter: whether taking swings or throwing pitches, every movement in baseball

melendez has the story. >> chris is about to show me his amputated leg. the prosthesis fits snugly around his residual limb. as he takes it off, i'm surprised to see his ankle and foot are now where his knee used to be. >> i can run fairly well. still getting a little better. i can jump. i can walk about as good as i could before the surgery. >> reporter: two years ago chris was diagnosed with bone cancer in his left femur. the procedure that would give him the most mobility was called rotation plasty surgery. in the last 20 years, dr. rinski has performed only ten of these rare surgeries. >> it acts totally as a knee. the amazing thing is the muscles of the chaalf, which then becom the front muscles of the thigh, have to adapt a little bit.

>> we explained to him it's going to look like this. i still remember chris' response. who cares how it looks? >> reporter: as long as he can run. >> that's right. >> jog down that way. >> reporter: chris, who loves sports and is always active, opted for rotation plasty. >> okay. well, that's better than i do. >> reporter: less than two months after chris received his prosthetic leg, his father gave him a basketball, and he attended a clinic for amputees. today chris is able to hold his own on the basketball court. his favorite player in the nba is steph curry, who he met in 2015. >> i got stefan curry's jersey that he had just worn to the practice. >> reporter: hasn't been washed. >> and it hasn't been washed. >> reporter: for the family, it's a long-term solution they can most certainly live with. at stanford, leanne melendez,
