>> hey, bud, you do that to me, and i'll knock you flat. >> you stay out of this. >> now at 11:00, passengers at sfo come to the defense of a tearful mother after they say a flight attendant nearly whacked her baby with her stroller. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama daetz. that scene played out on an american airlines flight about to leave san francisco for dallas this afternoon. this comes less than two weeks after a man was dragged off a united airlines flight and injured. in this case there's been a much quicker response from the airline over what could have become an international incident. [ crying ] a mother holding her baby openly wept in front of an american airlines plane full of passengers waiting to leave sfo. passengers came to her defense after they say a flight attendant violently grabbed her stroller, hitting her and just missing one of her children. >> very upset. grabbed and violently yanked and

stormed off the plaene with it. >> this picture appears to show the woman and her children being escorted off the plane. passengers say they were traveling from argentina and she may not have understood instructions for her to check the stroller at the gate. as she stood there in tears, one man's anger escalated. >> hey, bud, you do that to me, and i'll knock you flat. >> you stay out of this. >> the tension built as the employee appeared to egg him on to a fight. >> i don't care what the story is. >> a man from dallas explains why he got involved. >> a baby almost got hurt. that's what fired me up. that was it. i don't want to make a big deal about it. >> american airlines acted quickly, removing the employee from duty and promising a full investigation. a spokeswoman says what we see on this video does not reflect our values or how we care for our customers. we are deeply sorry for the pain we have caused this passenger and her family and to any other customers affected by the

incident. american airlines allows one stroller to be checked at the gate for free. passengers can't take strollers onto the plane. the spokeswoman for american says the airline upgrade the woman and her kids to first class and put them on the next flight where the crew took special care of the family. if you want to watch that video from inside the plane in its entirety, go to our abc7 news app or abc7news.com. to our other top story now, a power outage shut down a large portion of san francisco today. >> the outage hit at 9:20 this morning, affecting 88,000 customers from market street to the pre-sidio. it all started at a pg&e substation at larkin and eddie. >> smoke just poured out. pg&e says a circuit breaker failed, causing a fire. >> it shut down power. drivers struggled as 300 traffic lights went out. one of the many problems caused by the outage. the power didn't return until 5:00 this evening. >> our reporter is live in san francisco tonight. what a hassle. >> reporter: pretty big hassle. it's actually this afternoon that a lot of power -- all of

the power was fully restored. now, bart itself did not suffer an outage, but the montgomery bart station did. that's one of the reasons why bart actually trucked across from the east bay two generators they are still using to power the montgomery bart station tonight. the street lights are reset, and businesses are open again, but there is still fallout from the power outage at sha roetder's downtown, there was plenty of elbow room at the bar. >> usually we have a nice crowd for happy hour, but this evening has been a little bit slow, slower than usual, especially for a friday. >> reporter: rush hour traffic was lighter than usual because >> my company told me to go home. >> reporter: with no power at home, she brought friends to a restaurant in the marina, which was still closed and had delivery people waiting outside. some of her neighbors made the best of it. >> we just sort of decided, okay, we're not going to get much done today. it's a beautiful day. let's make a picnic and go to

the beach. >> today was a san francisco snow day. that meant couldn't go to school, couldn't do normal things. >> reporter: her son and his friends did go to school but got out early. did you still have class? >> not exactly. we didn't have to do any work today. >> if you go to the bathroom, it's no light when you go to the bathroom, so we had these freaky candles. >> reporter: speaking of bathrooms, when you've got to look good for a meeting, it helps to have a big purse and a plan. >> i brought my blow dryer and curling iron to the office. >> reporter: stalled elevators were another problem. san francisco fire crews responded to 41 elevator rescue calls. sergio quintana, abc7 news. >> the power outage stranded two window washers at 650 california street next to the old st. mary's cathedral. they're platform was stuck when the electricity went out. they were stranded for several hours suspended above the street. they were eventually rescued and

are okay. bart passengers were left in the dark at the montgomery station when the outage first hit. train service was running, but the lights went out and escalators stopped running. so bart closed the station as a precaution until the generators were brought in. >> st. francis hospital and california pacific medical center remained open during the outage but with limited services. both had emergency generators running. st. francis finished surgeries under way, then sent new patients to the hospitals in the city -- to other hospitals in the city. cpmc performed only emergency surgeries. >> a lot of inconvenience but there was one upside. >> tourists actually found it easier to take selfies on the cable cars when they weren't moving. the tracks are fine, but without traffic signals, the cars aren't safe to operate. we send out a push alert on the power outage all day on the abc7 news app. even people who didn't have power could receive them and get

updates. to get breaking news where you live, download the app and enable push alerts. moving on now, an outrageous robbery at a downtown walnut creek watch store. the owner was maced and then pulled his gun. multiple surveillance cameras caught the robbers in action. here's abc7 news reporter leslie brinkley. >> reporter: thursday at noon, this watch shop owner was behind the counter helping two customers when three men in construction gear came in. one with a clipboard telling him they needed him to sign off on some electrical work. >> hey! hey! hey! get out! >> the owner and a customer were sprayed with mace. almost simultaneously a second suspect used a bat to smash the case and started grabbing watches to pass to a third suspect with a backpack outside until the owner confronted him with a gun. >> i pointed it at him and began to rush him towards the door, and he obviously fled very

quickly. >> it was three suspects, three black male adults in construction attire. >> they waited until, hey, you know, what can i help you with? you know, nice, and then they came up. hey, really casual, i mean really playing the part. it's almost like lifetime criminal. they're good at what they do. >> reporter: police say all three drove off in this new model dodge challenger with paper plates. investigators are looking into any possible connections with other bay area holdups. the owner believes one suspect, this man, came in to case the store a week ago. in the end, that customer you saw cringing on the floor, who had just been maced, right after the robbery, they ended up buying the watch they were shopping for. in walnut creek, i'm leslie brinkley, abc7 news. new at 11:00, the man accused of killing seven people at an east bay university has been deemed mentally competent to stand trial. a judge made the ruling about suspected gunman juan go today. he's been charged in the 2012

mass shooting at arc oes university. two years ago, the time was put on hold indefinitely after a judge determined the man had a mental illness. he's now scheduled to be back in court wednesday to set a date for his trial. in san jose today, police shot a man who was holding a knife. it happened this afternoon at lewis and center roads. witnesses called police saying the man was threatening people with the knife, then using it to cut himself. the first officer arrived and confronted the man. police say he ignored commands, then charged towards the officer with the knife. the officer opened fire, hitting him at least once. he's being treated for serious injuries. in berkeley, police have lifted a shelter in place and called off a massive search for a man reported to be armed with a gun. sky7 was over the neighborhood just west of martin luther king jr. civic center park as officers went from yard to yard. they had guns drawn as you see and used k-9 units. they did not find the man. tonight san francisco police have arrested someone in connection with a theft at a san francisco opera house earlier this month. eight computers were stolen from

sky7 shows a terrifying moment in san francisco today. a man slipped down a cliff at china beach and couldn't get back up. he barely held onto the rock face when a chp rescue chopper dropped in to help out. you see the man put in a harness and lifted away.

firefighters say the man is okay. he refused treatment for his minor injuries. a san francisco startup that promised to shrink your wallet has shut down. plastic is considering filing for bankruptcy. the company video shows its gadget that looked and acted like a regular credit card but could hold up to 20 cards in one place. despite racing millions of dollars up front, the company wasn't able to fill pre-orders or raise enough money to keep going. well, from star wars to star trek and everything in between, the second annual silicon valley comic-con did not disappoint on its opening night. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo is live at the san jose convention center where the main attraction tonight, captain kirk. >> reporter: you got it, dan. it was such a fan atmosphere here tonight. everyone just having a blast and soaking up the sights and sounds. and, yes, william shatner was the ultimate draw. he had that audience in the palm of his hand.

here's what you'll need to worry about. if you're an allergy sufferer, tree pollen and grass pollen both running moderate over the weekend. u.v. index will be very high despite the fact that we're going to be seeing some changes this weekend. what we're looking at on live doppler 7 is just some passing clouds. rain will be entering the picture early next week, but we will be seeing a lot more cloud cover this weekend and cooler weather. highs for today anything but cool. look how warm it was. we had quite a few 70s across the board. some areas flirting with 80s. and in ukiah, 81 degrees. 72, san francisco. 75 oakland, upper 70s from san jose to livermore. 76 in santa rosa. don't expect a rerun of this but here's what you do have to look forward to. some mild weather in the south bay. 73 degrees tomorrow afternoon. santa clara, 72 degrees. right now is comfortable. mainly 50s and 60s. and a beautiful view from our east bay hills camera. we do have good visibility right now. cooling trend for the upcoming weekend. isolated sprinkles for the north

bay coast not out of the question. then light rain possible early next week. tomorrow if you have early plans, there will not be any fog around but we will siee some clouds. for the afternoon, quite a bit of cloud cover. so the sunlight will be dimmed. as a result, those temperatures will be lower tomorrow. mid-60s to the low 70s. but as i mentioned, still pretty mild across most of the bay area for your saturday. hour by hour forecast, there's a weak system that is going to pass through 7:00 a.m. saturday. you see a few returns off the mendocino coast, but this system falls apart. so we're not expecting much more than a couple of sprinkles around 9:00 a.m. off the coastline. then we head into the afternoon and the heavy cloud cover will just filter the son for your saturd saturday. another batch of clouds and sprinkles comes through early sunday morning then we just go with some more sunshine for the sunday afternoon time period. temperatures, though, overall will be coming down. earth day planner, we'll show you a few sprinkles tomorrow morning. high clouds for noontime but really quite comfortable if

okay. well, check out what people saw walking the streets of alameda today. a 50-pound african tortoise. >> people were circled around, staring and taking pictures when the animal control arrived. it actually wasn't far from home. >> yeah. a family said their plumber must have left a door open while they vacationed in tahoe. until they return, the tortoise will stay in animal control. it looks very calm and happy. >> feed me, feed me. >> exactly. not going anywhere fast. >> he must have bolted out the door when the plumber wasn't -- >> that's top speed for a turtle. >> exactly. that's my top speed too on a friday night at 11:30 or so. the giants lose madison bumgarner as well as a game in denver. and we're on the wrong end of history. something that had not happened since 1950. sports is next.
