gut health. since the late '90s, hundreds of millions of dollars have been poured into digestive research to help us better understand why we seem to be having so much more stomach, bowel, and other related issues now than in the past. well, it looks like we may finally have an answer. it lies in the 100 trillion tiny bacteria that actually live in your stomach, intestines, colon, and throughout your entire g.i. tract. we're now learning that this bacteria may not only hold the secret to healthier digestion but possibly to your overall health and well-being. the latest research shows that the low levels of good bacteria, called probiotics, in your gut may mean more than just embarrassing gas or occasional bloating or irregular bowel movements. it means poor immune health, too. our guest today is here to help us make sense out of all of this and explain what's really behind the latest probiotic medical food-and-supplement craze. he's a familiar face.
2:02 am
you may have seen him on the hit tv series "the doctors." his name is dr. keller wortham. he's a los angeles-based physician specializing in obesity-related health issues, as well as general health and preventive medicine. welcome to the show, dr. wortham. >> thank you very much, dr. pavone. it's great to be here. >> today you're here to educate us. >> that's right. as you just mentioned, the latest findings in digestive and immune health, including the importance of new and powerful probiotic supplements, are one of the biggest health breakthroughs in the last decade. so many people struggling with stomach and bowel issues are finally finding much-welcomed relief with these highly improved probiotic products. >> okay, dr. wortham, we've been hearing about probiotic yogurt and pills for years now. >> uh-huh. >> so, can you tell our busy audience what's new and why they should be listening now? >> well, to begin with, i can totally understand why many people haven't been on board with taking probiotics in the past. people tried them, they got mixed results, and then they
2:03 am
quit. many of my patients felt the same way. but now all of that has changed. >> so, what's changed? >> well, the latest probiotic strain formulas are quite different from what's been on the market over the years. they're much more effective, and the results have been really dramatic. plus, without probiotics, well, you wouldn't live very long. >> how is that? >> for people not familiar with probiotics, they are the beneficial good bacteria in your body. now, doctors had long viewed bacteria as something we had to get rid of in the body. bacteria, after all, can lead to infections, like strep throats. >> or can give you food poisoning, like e. coli. that's why we give people antibiotics, to kill the bacteria that makes us sick. >> that's true, but most of the bacteria in your body does not make you sick. good bacteria, like probiotics, are beneficial and they're part of what keeps you healthy. these friendly bacteria help you properly digest food and produce vitamins, and they're a vital part of your immune system.
2:04 am
we now know that 80% of your immune system lives in your g.i. tract. >> so an unhealthy digestive system means a weakened immune system. >> exactly. but your digestive system controls more than just that. and even subtle imbalances in the bacterial population of your gut can cause a whole host of health issues. and simply restoring the right bacterial balance in your gut, by adding good bacteria and pushing out the bad bacteria, can make a dramatic difference. >> so, how is that done? >> well, it's really simple. we do it with the right combination of both pro- and prebiotic supplement strains to nurture the friendly bacteria in your g.i. tract, helping overcome and push out the harmful stuff in your gut. >> but what do you mean by "the right combination"? >> so, here's the problem with much of what we see advertised, when it comes to probiotics. the probiotics that they use in their formulas simply cannot change the composition of bacteria in your digestive tract enough to make any significant
2:05 am
real difference. these products often end up being just a waste of your money. >> but why don't they work? >> well, it's because the traditional formulas they've been selling use probiotic strains that are very fragile -- too fragile to really be effective. they must be kept cold, and literally begin to die off even at room temperature, and even more quickly when they enter the harsh, acidic environment of your stomach, long before they can provide any real benefits. >> so, that's why so many probiotics require refrigeration. >> correct. but refrigeration only takes care of the heat issue. the majority still die off in your stomach acid before they can really do anything. and since refrigeration is such a turnoff to consumers, marketers started selling these megadose packages of these fragile probiotics in hopes that enough would survive, sitting on a shelf without refrigeration. >> did that work? >> no, dr. pavone, it did not, but it made for some great marketing. since probiotics are live bacteria, they die off at a
2:06 am
rapid rate in the bottle as it either sits in your store shelf or in your cupboard. >> and much of whatever is left dies off as it passes through the acidic environment of the stomach. >> that's right, before it hits those trillions of cells of bacteria in your intestines and colon, where you need it. so it's simply just not enough to move the needle of your digestive health. it's like adding a pinch of salt to the ocean. >> okay, i get it. i guess that's why i never felt much from probiotics. but if not enough good bacteria get through, how can probiotics work? >> well, that is why i'm here, dr. pavone. it turns out that not all probiotic strains are fragile. and ironically, it's the most ancient strains of probiotics -- the ones that have been shown to be around in our fertile soil for millions of years -- that are not fragile. in fact, they're quite hardy. >> so that's how our ancestors got their probiotics. >> exactly. and they didn't have to take a pill. these ancient probiotic strains are different because they're what's called spore-forming.
2:07 am
so they easily survive both heat and stomach acid largely intact when they reach the intestines, where they can populate and spread throughout your entire g.i. tract. it's actually amazing stuff. and in fact, most of them are so hardy, they can even resist antibiotics. >> really? can you explain how spore-forming probiotics survive when conventional probiotics cannot? >> sure. so, think of them like seeds you buy in a packet at a garden store. they're unaffected by heat or environment. they're just sitting there in the little packet. but then they turn into this beautiful plant in the soil where they germinate. so, that's what probiotic spore strains do when they hit your intestines. they're like seeds up until that point, unaffected by heat or your stomach acid. and then they work fast and germinate in your intestine, quickly tipping the "good versus bad bacteria" balance in your favor. >> that's remarkable. and the top probiotics you recommend are in this new formula you brought with you today, doctor. >> yes, they are. it's called biotix plus be
