live, where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> science isn't separate from politics, it is part and parcel of how a society moves forward. >> supporters of science feeling undersiege taken the streets of several bay area cities. marchers in about 700 cities worldwide stand in solidarity for earth day. i'm eric thomas it's not weird, it's science and it's important. that's a message thousands of people share today and they want people to know it's not a political football.

as we said, marches all over the bay area today. we are live in berkeley where a march is happening right now. cornell. >> reporter: eric, for now there is a rally going on here' this plaza. hundreds of people are here in support of science. right now speakers talking to the crowd about global warming, climate change, and the benefits of medical research. earlier thousands of people took to the streets of san market street packed wall to wall with thousands of marchers out in support of science. becky full lop brought her daughter from oakland. >> i believe that science is not something we should have to be marching for and yet with the current administration it's something tt' threatened. >> many believe trump has shown little respect for the importance of science. >> basic things are under attack, which i don't support. i'm also here because i believe

that science itself and technology regardless of who the president is should be more inclusive. >> the march from the foot of market street made its way toward civic center. some students came with their science classes. >> why are you here today. >> because i won't to save this earth. >> before the march, san francisco supervisor who is hiv-positive told the troud crowd science saved his life. >> we continue to funding the fushlg knowledge of our planet or our universe and cures to save thois of lives. >> science is no myth. >> we want the same thing, a better for our families and lufds ones and community and if we can agree upon that then we can have a reasonable discussion about how to move forward. >> in an earth gueye statement president trump said my administration is betting understand of our environment and better environmental risks.

>> we're back life. this rally for science continues on the cal campus. there are several more speakers expected. later the group will march to civic center park all in the name of science. we're live in berkeley, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> thank you very much. abc 7 news was at san jose city hall when scientists and their supporters kick off a march through downtown. wa'turprised by the turnout. >> there's a very strong presence fs science in santa clara valley. practically a whole economy is dependent on science and evidence-based decision making and we lead the nation and the world in innovation. >> i think it's going to be a wonderful start to folks standing up for rand evidence-based policy and science. >> organizers also told us they like to see politicians of all parties support science education and scientific projects across the country. >> let us say yes to science, technology, engineering, arts

and math. >> science supporters held a sear reeves events at the nation's capital in addition to a march, demonstrators took part at a teach-in in the national mall. they included bill ny the science guy, john foley executive director of the academy of sciences in san francisco. president trump did not comment on the marches today. his first 100 days in office are coming to a conclusion. mr. trump had vowed action and accomplishments in his first 100 days but now he's calling the benchmark ridiculous. we have more. >> coast to coast from new york to l.a. and in 60 different countries around the world, the march for science celebrated scientific achievement and protested some of the policies of the trump administration. >> the policies of the administration are so dangerous. >> the president made no menti of the rallies during his first visit to waltereed hospital today. >> i heard about this and i wanted to do it myself.

was going to be. >> all of which raises the pressure now. david wright, abc news, washington. >> a group of east bay activists marked earth day by voigs their fears about how rising sea levels could change had the place where's we live and work. abc 7 news was in local land when members of citizens for east shore parks carried blue banners new jack london square. tey believe ring sea levels could push t shore inland to broadway and second strt. one of the group's leaders says there is still time to act. >> we need to stop pretending that this is some chinese hoax or this is not real or it's not happening. this is no longer theory, it's real, it's happening. second, we need to fund scientific research to sum come up with some of the best solution zblds if sea levels do rise by the levels they expect by 2,100 then mieflz freeway, even the oakland airport could be submerged. take a look at other science marches across the nation.

of the 15 victims. he taught at making waves academy and founded a youth program where he molested boys. he was arrested in 2014 while he was working at an elementary school in richmond. a frightening start on saturday morning to people in vallejo. an underground electrical box sent flames into the air. firefighters used dry chemical extinguishers to control the fire until pg&e bot gott there. a close call today for a san francisco firefighter on the scene of a vacant school fire. in is video the department posted on social media. fire department tells us the flame scorched a firefighter's protective gear which worked to protect him from suffering burns. no word yet on what started that fire. a passenger said he just had enough after seeing a flights attendant's treatment of a sobbing mother.
