tv   Right This Minute  ABC  April 24, 2017 3:00pm-3:31pm PDT

3:00 pm
it's april 24th. time for some fresh viral videos "right this minute." a skydiving adventure gets terrifyingly twisted. >> you don't want that to happen. that's the worst of all things that could happen. >> why this emergency is going to make your palms sweat. >> no way! no way! it's the dance class that's making a big difference. >> these ballerinas have down syndrome. >> meet the young woman behind the beautiful transformations in tutus. >> they are amazingly talented. a hectic scene when a dog gets attacked -- >> and it is a monster. >> no! >> see the lucky escape after a battle with a snake. we've got christian, oli, charity, nick, and gayle showing off the best on the web. including the brave guy who gives labor pains a try.
3:01 pm
>> just to see what it's like. >> why for him the simulation is really pushing it. >> i was in labor for 36 hours. any time a youtube channel posts a disclaimer saying this may cause sweaty palms, you know things are about to get real. that's what happened in this video. the video starts out with these fellas skydiving. they're enjoying the friendly skies until they're not. i don't think that circular motion is what you want to do so quickly. >> this dude starts spinning out of control. >> you can say that again. >> come on. cut >> he's trying, but he's got a mess on his hands. he's all tangled up. >> that's his main and his reserve wrapped around each other. >> yes. >> [ bleep ]. >> imagine yourself in that situation right now. this is a living nightmare. >> and as heavily as he's
3:02 pm
breathing, i don't think he remained as calm as one should be in this situation. you have nothing else to do but remain calm and go to your training. >> oh! >> no way! no way! no way! >> he's got something slowing him down. he's not the control. >> it's still tangled up. you're right. losing altitude quickly. >> you can tell already he's slowed down. >> man down! everybody brace! >> oh! >> ooh. okay. oh, gosh. >> i'm alive. i'm alive. >> holy schnikes, >> they can't believe it either. telling him not to move. he's okay. >> you're telling me no broken bones, nothing after that? >> there aren't reports of any jurs. i'm sure he learned a lot from that experience.
3:03 pm
>> i'm alive. this is a ballet studio unlike any you've probably ever seen. these ballerinas have down syndrome. the idea to open up a studio for these kids that have down syndrome came to 20-year-old holland who learned some of these students had lots of flexibility but not much core strength. so she decided to use something that she loves so much like ballet to benefit these kids. and so she opened up the purple tutu and gives free classes to girls and boys between the ages of 4 and 10. >> of all the dance classes i took as a kid, there was never anybody like that in my class. this is wonderful. >> everything good comes out of this. music therapy works well. dance and strength and physical fitness works well for people. why not? this is a perfect combination. >> she started this back in 2014
3:04 pm
and the students are actually doing really, really well. to tell us more, we have holland mcdowell all the way from washington, d.c. where she's going to school. welcome to the so how did you decide to actually move forward with a studio like this? >> i started it because my high school required us to have service hours. my sophomore year i decided i needed to make an impact on the community. so i started it not really knowing what was going to happen. then i incorporated into my thesis and found i was making a difference in these children's lives. >> what made you open up to those with down syndrome? do you have a family member or friend? >> i don't. i just saw a need in the community. >> how long did you get people saying i'm in? >> it took awhile. we had our first spring workshop in 2014. it was in a church auditorium. we had three kids and three teachers. once those kids showed they loved it, we built up the
3:05 pm
program. >> how have these classes helped raise awareness? >> through the program we've shown people that down syndrome is not that bad and they are amazingly talented and we're so lucky to have them here. >> how is this whole journey affecting you? >> a lot. i was very, very shy. this program has really helped me kind of build my own confidence. >> how is it you're able to provide the classes for free? >> all through donations and we have fund raising efforts. then from there we grew and now we're housing in a beautiful professional dance studio donated by the charleston dance institute. so we just really have come a long way because of the community. >> do you think that the program will spread? that you can start it in other cities as well? >> actually, yes. i am very excited to announce that very recently we started a new program in alexandria, virginia. so we are growing. >> that's awesome. thank you so much. keep up the amazing work. what you're doing is obviously changing lives. thank you. >> thank you. thank you for having me.
3:06 pm
african wildlife parks often have to deal with poachers. as such there are people that go out on patrol sometimes with anti-poaching dogs. in this case, this dog almost ended up getting poached for dinner. you see that? >> whoa. >> no! poor dog. >> yes. keira the anti-poaching dog, she has been captured and bitten onto by a south african python. and it is a monster. the guy who posted the video, in fact, he said this had been going on for about a minute when he then turned on the gopro. you can hear the obvious distress in her barks and wimpers. >> run, keira, run. bite back. fight. >> this is crazy. >> there you see it right there. >> run run run! that's right. eventually the python lets go. keira backs up, that's when the guy starts giving her orders. and now the video jumps a little
3:07 pm
bit later. they're in the back of the truck. you can see on her right side the injury. he starts cleaning it with water. we know pythons themselves aren't venomous, however their teeth are covered in bacteria. they're making sure she's okay. >> oh, my gosh, i feel so bad for her. she's going to be traumatized. >> no. three hours after this incident, the dog was napping like nothing had happened. sitting there quite happy like, oh, that was fun. >> wow. okay. that's a cool dog. you could call this video all kinds of things. two for one that nobody wants or magic or miracle, whatever it is. it's amazing that people walked away. this is in eastern china. watch that sign. it did hit the delivery guy on the motorbike. see that again and a third time. boom. that missed three people. >> went around that guy like it was nothing. like it pirouetted around him.
3:08 pm
>> it was like magic or miracle. you pick the one that works for you. when it stops, it j sto this second pedestrian. hits that pole. that's nothing short of a miracle for all three of those people that were walking away from it. what would we be without a russia video where a pedestrian is in danger. he picks up a stick in the road and he starts poking at it. it does stop flashing and blinking and gets it to operate the right way. watch what happens after he turns his back. look what's starting to fall. >> what's that stick holding it up? >> who knows. that's another great mystery that will not be resolved. a man spots his friend's stolen truck and gives chase. >> i'm calling him now. i know it's the truck.
3:09 pm
>> but things get serious when the thieves realize they're being followed. >> uh-oh. >> this is why the police are like, don't do this. >> yep. and a woman has a special surprise for her grandmother. >> nana is 63 years old and has always wanted one of these. >> but does she end up regretting it? >> you'd think she was going to love it, right? go, go! [ rock music playing ] have fun with your replaced windows. run away! [ grunts ] leave him! leave him! [ music continues ] brick and mortar, what?! you're going to love it. dash cam video from alberta, canada. green chevy up ahead in the sights of the dash cam. why are we interested in this? because that chevy belongs to his buddy nate and nate is not driving it. >> my friend's truck got stolen at 6:45 this morning. i just dropped him off at his house and i saw the truck at the bottom of the hill. they peeled out and went up the hill. i know it's the truck. >> that's thomas on the phone with dispatch trying to get officers to come to his position to hopefully wrangle the people inside the truck. >> i'm in. give me that peach. >> it gets so good. >> is the driver of the truck suspicious yet that they're being followed? >> let's find out, gayle. because thomas follows the truck into this apartment complex and observes from a distance when he sees four people get out. one begins to approach him. >> this is why the police are
3:14 pm
like don't do this. >> yep. that guy seems to not do anything. but the next guy coming down the sidewalk does. >> yeah, they just tried to attack me. they just tried to open my door. >> thomas takes off a little bit, tries to put more distance between these guys. here comes the popo. you can see some of the suspects climbing up this balcony. thomas really has a mind for where his dash cam is pointed. you see the officer come into stream and he's got help. >> that dog is like let me at him. where are they? >> thomas is smart too. because he doesn't get in the way of the officers. he stays back and just makes sure he gets it on camera. >> two suspects were caught. they're facing a litany of charges. two slipped away. police are still looking for them. the good news is some of nate's band equipment was in the truck. the mixing board was still there. sadly thomas didn't see the bass guitar. that's missing. but all in all, this is a huge win for nate. >> friend of the year right
3:15 pm
here. kayla is going to make a dream come true today. she is in her car headed to pick up her grandmother. nana is 63 years old and has always wanted one of these. >> forever she's said she's wanted to get her nose pierced. >> yeah. she's a hip, cool grandma but never got one. kayla decided, dude, it's time. so she's going to go pick her up, take her to dinner. she doesn't tell her what they're going to do, but she still encourages grandma to go along with this thing they're going to do. zblec >> even if it meant a few minutes of being scared, would you do it? >> yes. >> when they get to the mall, that's when the big reveal happens. >> we're getting your nose pierced. >> so they walk into the piercing shop. first they dot it to see if she
3:16 pm
likes the placement of it. >> yeah. >> the piercer tells her, ready? >> all done. >> straight in there. no problem. >> but grandma's super stoked. they clean her up a little bit, her eye starts tearing up. but then they hand her the mirror. >> takes it like a champ. >> you'd think she was going to love it, right? >> i love it. >> yeah, she loves it. this is like the giddiest grandma ever. >> i love that her granddaughter is so giddy too. >> it's a beautiful shared moment. living on the edge. >> no room for error. >> wow! >> next "right this minute." and still to come, it's time for a little fun. >> just a big group of friends
3:17 pm
