live where you live, this is "abc 7 news." a woman screams shatter the calm in a quiet san francisco neighborhood prompting a stranger to come to the rescue during an attempted abduction. good evening and thank you for joining us, i'm ama daetz. >> i'm dan ashley. police credit the good samaritan from preventing a kidnapping. it happened over the weekend as the woman was walking on steiner streetd. >> new at >> reporter: the victim is stave. still a terrifying ordeal and police wasted no time tracking down a suspect. it was just before 9:00 p.m. saturday on steiner street. a woman was walking up the hill when a man grabbed her from behind and tried to put her in his truck. david cobert was in his living room at the time.

>> i heard a woman scream loudly for about seven, eight, nine, >> reporter: but it was apparently the actions of an approaching motorist that scared off the attacker. he turned on his bright and began honking his horn. the man ultimately let go of the victim. >> i think it is fair to say were it not for their intervention it is likely he would have succeeded in his cad nap and would have taken the victim in his vehicle. >> reporter: the suspect got away but not for long. police won't say how, but they tracked him down next day in petaluma where officers took him into custody of after a pursuit. >> it is frightening. i assume my own safety, but i guess i shouldn't. >> reporter: people we talked to, women especially who yalk at night in pacific heights, are shaken by news of the attempted kidnap. they say it is a good reminder to remain vigilant at all times. >> try not to look at my phone and be aware of who is around me and what not. >> reporter: as for the suspect, police are not releasing his name due to the ongoing

investigation. he is 46 years old and from sonoma county. me lena kim, "abc 7 news." an employee at the boys and girls club in petaluma is accused of offering up a six-year-old girl for sex. benjamin gorke says the 22 year old posted a picture of the girl who was in the club for after school. in an internet chat room. he told police he accessed the club from his home. in a statement the boys and girls club says its mission is to keep boys and girls safe and the fully cooperating. >> bart revealed two police officers were at the coliseum station in oakland when dozens of robbers swarmed through a train. bart said earlier none of the officers were at the coliseum station saturday night. that's when between 40 and 60 juveniles robbed officers. two officers were patrolling the

parking lot when the gang terrorized people on the train. >> we had increased presence at oakland station. we have been authorizing over time for key stations, specifically oakland. >> bart says two passengers were punched. the thieves grabbed five cellphones, a purse and a duffle bag before running away from the station. >> two dangerous items for san francisco police to close off streets on patrero hill this evening. you can see where it happened at 22nd and wisconsin streets. someone discovered a pipe bomb and a hand grenade about 5:00 this evening. the bomb squad rendered those items safe about 7:00 p.m. an overflow crowd turned out tonight to voice their opinions about a temporary homeless shelter in the mission. the navigation centers would take in as many as 100 people. concerned about the possibility of an up tick in crime. supervisor ronan says that the navigation center is happening. you can see the empty building behind me and the adjacent lot. it will take developers the better part of a year to get permits to build here, so the supervisor says it is a perfect place for the shelter. >> negotiate a deal with -- >> reporter: san francisco supervisor hillary ronan tried to calm fears surrounding a proposed navigation center at 26th street and van ness avenue. she has made a deal with the owner of this empty building to create a temporary homeless shelter. >> lenar is not able to get their building permits for about six to nine months. during that time they are donating this space to the city. >> reporter: the center could house more than 100 people currently living on the streets in the mission. >> i know that we need to get these people in homes, i know we need to do this, but adding 120 people to the area is not the right solution. also, they're going to end it with no exit plan.

that's another big issue. >> reporter: others want the shelter to open sooner. >> every single day we delay folks who are living on the streets are still out on the streets and aren't getting the services they need, and neighbors still continue to have to deal with these camps. >> reporter: reason an says they have some 7,000 people living on the streets. >> they want a place to live, but they make it so difficult in the city here now for us to find affordable house. >> reporter: reason an will hold a second community meeting since tonight's was over capacity. in san francisco, katie utehs, "abc 7 news." two groups who invited an coulter to speak at uc berkley are suing the university. the lawsuit comes after the conservative commentators speech was rescheduled from this week to next week when students are out of class and studying for finals. coulter plans to come to berkley to speak this thursday. the group's attorney says the university has a secret policy that limits conditions for

certain speakers. >> it is not in writing. it is not been publicized, but it has been used to shut down two speakers that the berkley college republicans have brought to cal. >> the university says there is no safe place for coulter to speak on campus on thursday. earlier today coulter retweeted a weather forecast for thursday with the mysterious phrase, nice day for an outdoor speech in berkley. developing news out of arkansas where the nation's first double execution in more than 16 years was marked by accusations one of the prisoners suffered to his death. bock jack jones and marcelle williams were convicted of murder. jones was executed first. a judge temporarily blocked williams lethal injection. his attorneys argued the first execution was inhumane. they say officials spent 45 minutes trying to place an iv in jones' next before putting it elsewhere and he gulped for air before he died. the judge ultimately allowed both executions to go forward.
