now from "abc 7 news," live breaking news. and that breaking news is from the east bay where a neighborhood is locked down tonight. swat officers have surrounded a car, trying to get a homicide suspect into custody. good evening, i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama daetz. right now that man is armed inside a car. >> this started at larkey park at walnut creek where a woman was shot dead. now, police are in a standoff with the suspected gunman nine miles away at howell road and center avenue in martinez. >> melanie woodrow is live in martinez with breaking details. melanie. >> reporter: well, police have been negotiating with this suspect for about four hours now. he came here to martinez after allegedly shooting and killing a woman in walnut creek can, and tonight martinez police are now saying that it appears this

suspect knew his victim. we have some video to show you from earlier this afternoon. martinez police say they received a call at 1:30 p.m., rather walnut creek police, for a woman who was shot multiple times on the 1900 block of first avenue. that's in the area near larkey park and the lindsey wildlife museum. suspect fled southbound on buena vista avenue. police found the suspect's vehicle on linville lane. we saw that vehicle, a rental car, being sewed. a regional east bay swat team with assistance from a bomb squad used a robot during their search. of course, neighbors were curious. at one point we is saw a neighbor watching with binoculars. around 7:00 tonight law enforcement quickly moved to martinez where they surrounded the suspect in a different vehicle near a chevron gas station at howell and old orchard. residents were told to shelter in place here. police say it is not clear now who owns the vehicle that this

suspect is currently in. this was walnut creek's first homicide of the year. >> it is have you unusual. this is a very safe city, and we do not see these things happen in our city. >> that's really scary. i go there every day with my dog and there's lots of children there. so it is kind can of scary to know that happened on our street, but hopefully they catch him. >> reporter: and, again, back in martinez, here now looking at video of that suspect in that vehicle who has been in this vehicle here at the chevron gas station for at least four hours as police attempt to negotiate with him. we saw at one point it looked like he was holding a cellphone, perhaps talking to law enforcement that way, but obviously officers out here are taking their time and being very careful. we'll continue to monitor this situation and bring you updates both online and of course tomorrow morning. live in martinez, melanie

woodrow, "abc 7 news." melanie, thank you. our other top story, the free speech showdown involving conservative commentator ann coulter, what many people feared in berkley did not happen because she did not appear. >> protesters showed up. new since 6:00, we learned seven people were arrest. lisa is live in berkley with how the demonstration was different from others we have seen recently. lisa. >> reporter: berkley police made five of those arrests, and as someone who has been here for the other two protests that took place across the street at civic center park, that did turn violent, i can tell you things were very different today. namely because of the massive police presence. >> this movement was here before ann coulter and it is going to be here after ann coulter. >> reporter: that's exactly why police from several jurisdictions flooded the city can of berkley. they wanted to be prepared just in case.

>> the past 18 years i've been here, i have not seen this amount of officers deployed for an event. >> reporter: uc berkley police called for mutual aid, though culture didn't speak police set up barricades, blocked buildings and were on high alert. they made two arrests. meantime, near civic center park two sides with two very different viewpoints stood on opposite sides of the street. >> say it loud, say it clear, immigrants are welcome here. >> build that wall. >> reporter: they were separated by this very long and very well-armed police line. a strong police presence was noticed and actually appreciated by members of both groups. many expected major problems. >> were you attacked? >> no, not today. the police did a really good job c of keeping everybody separate. >> i'm glad the police decided to step in between, which is great since we're out numbered. >> reporter: police reported no

injuries or property danger. in berkley, "abc 7 news." and while ann coulter did not speak at berkley she took her message to fox news. tonight she told host tucker carlson what she would have said if her event at cal had had taken place. >> obviously it was going to be a searingly brilliant speech on immigration, but the main point of which was federal written law on the books about immigration developed over generations by both democrats and republicans should be enforced. >> coulter then attacked uc berkley administrators and the uk police department, speaking about the threat of violence, uc officials were worried about, coulter said it is the police force's job to keep the peace. and we sent out updates on this story all day long through the "abc 7 news" app. download the app for free and enable push alerts to get breaking news updates as they happen. >> and developing news tonight, a preschool teacher in san mateo is accused of taking pictures of young girls in sexual poses.

police found the pictures on his phone. he taught at st. matthews episcopal day school about three years. no longer does he work there. a at the same time from the school said student safety is a top priority. we proactively notified the san mateo police department and removed the teacher from school. >> new at 11:00, there will not be a vote on the republican healthcare plan tomorrow. kevin mccarthy says there's not enough support for a new plan to replace the affordable care act. the postponed vote means congress is likely to approve a spending bill tomorrow with no immediate threat to shut down the government. also new at 11:00, in the last hour a san jose man trying to avoid being sent back to russia arrived back in the bay area. he was detained by customs and border protection in florida for more than a month. happy. denis davydov was met by friends at sfo, his flight delayed abouten an hour and a half but landed at exactly 10:00. it was about a month ago that denis took a vacation to the u.s. virgin islands, but he was arrested by customs and border protection when he tried to return. so the back story is denis left russia in 2014. he came to the u.s. on a tourist visa and then applied for political asylum. you see, he is guy and hiv positive and he was afraid to be living in russia under those circumstances. legal advocates told "abc 7 news" he did everything right and had permission to be here, but he ended up detained at an ice facility in miami for more than a month. he was provided with medication but did not have access to a specialist. tonight he says his health is okay and he's grateful to everyone who has supported him. >> i want to be around my friends, around my new family, and i am so thankful to my friends, to everybody for

supporting me. i will cry right now. i don't want to do this. >> reporter: now, i talked with both ice and customs and border protection tonight, but neither will comment on specifically denis's case. to that point, his attorney advised him not to speak to the specific details of his arrest and detainment because his case is ongoing. so tonight it is still unclear exactly why this happened. live at sfo, katie marzullo, "abc 7 news." all right, katie. thank you. a man from san carlos is missing. he has not been seen since last week. monday he was supposed to get on a plane to meet his wife in orlando. there's no information to confirm he boarded the plane. investigators think he drove in this black 2005 hyundai accent. it is unusual for him to take off without telling anyone. >> well, we have a story that's just wild. can happen for an unexpected reason. rats nibbling away at your car. >> i-team reporter dan nois is here. obviously we're not talking about rats eating the whole car. >> no, but enough of the important parts in many different makes and models of cars to lead to costly repairs and concerns for owners. some question whether or fwaning materials in car parts like this are more appetizing to rats. >> watch this. >> margaret levine loves her electric bmw, how zippy it is, how it helps the environment. turns out rats love her car, too. >> it was shocking. i had no idea that that was even an issue. >> when the car wouldn't take a charge, she took it to a marin bmw dealer and found this, wires clipped, insulation eaten around the brains of the car and a rat nest under the front hood. >> we have bad news for you. >> reporter: total bill, $5,000 worthful damage. >> they've been eating the wires of your car. >> reporter: what goes through your mind when you hear that? >> i was glaber gassed.

i was like what. >> she took her first prius and found rats caused 8,500 dollars worth of of damage. >> i went back to the mechanics and they showed me a big dead rat. >> reporter: toyota is among the first company to face class action complaints. according to the filing the use of soy or biobased ingredients is a defect that entice pests to eat through and damage and compromise the wiring. >> as far as we can see from the evidence, rats think it is delicious. >> reporter: l.a. attorney tells me he has been contacted by angry drivers from across the country and canada who have lost money after rats feasted on their cars and trucks. >> we want toyota to cover this under their warranty because it is not the people's fault who bought the car. they didn't do anything wrong. >> reporter: toyota declined an on-camera interview citing the current litigation but sent a state saying rodent damage to

vehicle wiring occurs across the industry. we are not aware of any scientific evidence that shows rodent are attracted to automotive wiring because of alleged soy-based content. >> as you see the rat in there, the wires shoot through them. >> reporter: the garage sees rat damage in toyotas and other brands. >> it was mercedes and portias they like the flavor but now it is everything. >> reporter: owner tells me he used to see one or two cars with rat damage a year, but now he is seeing up to ten a week. he thinks it is because of the new compounds in car that range from soy, rice husk, sugars, peanut and straw. >> rubber is made out of plant products so rats love it. >> reporter: his mechanics have come face-to-face with sometimes not so little culprits. >> you're a big old rat. >> reporter: in her case, margaret levine's insurance is covering most of the rat damage. >> by the time i got to dealer he said sincere very common. >> reporter: she is haggling with bmw about the company paying her $1,000 deductible.

doomsday pretiks of a worst case scenario by the national oceaning and atmosphereic administration. this is san francisco. the blue areas on the map shows part of bay area inundated by water should sea levels rise by 10 to 12 feet. most of east bay would be under water including oakland airport and most ofal ah immediate ah. along the peninsula and south bay, just as bad. the scenario would put all of foster city and red wood shores under way. >> that's eye opening. no rain in the immediate forecast. >> no, meteorologist sandhya patel is here with what is headed our way. >> nothing but sunshine and warmth. check out the trend for concord, 76 degrees tomorrow afternoon. consider it the coolest of the next seven tays. notice temperatures rising as we hit the weekend and flirting with close to 90 degrees by early to middle part of next week. right now on live doppler 7 you will not see any rain on the screen, but i do want to show you a time lapse first from our santa cruz camera.

you will notice the high clouds that came through this afternoon. very few people on the beach. this is going to change as we heat up around the bay area. i think we're going to lose the clouds, gain a few degrees and that's going to have a lot of people heading to the beach. so here is a look at santa cruz right now, and the forecast for tomorrow, if you are hitting the beach there, 70 degrees tomorrow afternoon. very high uv index. definitely will need sunscreen. temperatures elsewhere along the coast in 60s. live doppler 7 now showing clear conditions here in the bay area. the rain is absent and it is going to stay that way next seven days. temperatures right now in 50s. a live look from "abc 7 news" explore tore yum camera showing a beautiful skyline of san francisco. clear skies right now. sunny and warmer days ahead. breezy tomorrow in coast and hills. today gusts topped 45 miles an hour in some places, winds are beginning to ease up. 90 degree temperatures inland next week. you heard correctly. here is a sampling of what to expect tomorrow. oakland 72 degrees, mild and

sunny, and pretty much any city you pick here, comfortable, low to mid 70s. your hour-by-hour planner for tomorrow will start off cool. yes, it will be bright and the sun will be out. temperatures will come up a few more degrees. breezy along the coast but not as windy as today. tomorrow morning grab a jacket or sweater, it will be on the cool side, mid 40s to low 50s, then tomorrow afternoon the breeze kicks up along the coast and over the hills. for the rest of you, you are looking at a nice day, a nice way to end the workweek. low 60s to upper 70s. winds will increase but nowhere near the intensity of today. 3:00 tomorrow afternoon close to 30 mile an hour winds along the coast. about 5:00 p.m. friday winds start to subside. as the winds drop off the temperatures will go up. accuweather forecast will feature that. low 80s inland. for your weekend above average to start off a new weekend, and
