shattered. we're told by the gas rounds fired by police. the ones that finally ended this overnight standoff. the tense standoff between police s.w.a.t. units and a man suspected in the murder of a walnut creek woman lasted more than 19 hours. the suspect inside this mercedes. at one point even putting a sun shade across the front window. later he got out of the car hands up and then scrambled back inside when s.w.a.t. officers fired two nonlethal stun rounds at him. finally, the suspect dropped what appeared to be a hand gun out the driver's side window. moments later police fired three gas or ferret rounds, shattering the car's windows and forcing the suspect out hands up. >> the negotiations went on around 19 hours with him. some might ask why so long. and the reason is preservation of life. we're here to preserve everybody's life no matter what they do and we want to get him in custody with no one injured

or hurt. >> reporter: 38-year-old gregory is wanted for the murder of a 47-year-old woman shot multiple times on first avenue in walnut creek thursday afternoon. police say she and the suspect were in a dating relationship. those who live around the martinez standoff seen were relieved it was finally over. than it should have. but what do i know, i'm not ape cop. the guy had a gun, right? nobody wants to rush into that. >> reporter: and we're back live here. live look at that car, the suspect as we showed you gave up his gun, but police could still see he had at least one, maybe two knives with him inside the car. he not only threatened to kill himself at different points during the standoff. he also threatened to kill the officer who was negotiating with him at one point. again, complicating matters even more. we're told by police, the suspect may have been taking drugs inside the car during the

negotiations, and may have been hallucinating. live in martinez, laura anthony, abc7 news. >> all right, laura, thank you. b.a.r.t. says it's made the first arrest in connection with saturday night's take over robbery of a train by a mob of teens at the coliseum station in oakland. the agency says the person taken into custody is a male juvenile, and more arrest warrants are expected to be issued for additional suspects they have identified. about 40 to 60 teens hopped the fare gates at the coliseum station and got in a train. rising crime rates mandate officers work overtime to provide extra patrol. >> an 18-year-old man arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting and killing an elderly woman who was out for a morning walk in northern california. 18-year-old they have inglenn butler of north high lands was already in custody on an unrelated elder abuse case when detectives took him into custody. the sacramento sheriff's office

accuses butler of attacking 86-year-old and her 61-year-old friend as the two walked around the high school track. detectives say butler sexually assaulted them and beat them. she fought back with her walking stick allowing her friend to escape. investigators say this apparently was a random attack. an employee at the boys and girls club in petaluma accused of offering up a 6-year-old girl for sex was a rained in court this morning. abc7 news caught benjamin leaving court in santa rosa. he posted a picture of the girl in an after school program in an internet chat room for pedestrian files. he posted her address and phone number. police are asking if anybody knows of potential victims please come forward. >> in vallejo more and more people with lost dogs are wondering if their pets are among those found in a mass grave. >> 12 dogs found in blue rock springs trail.

abc7 news reporter wayne freedman joining us near the scene. wayne? >> reporter: naturally people are upset about that. there is good news. animal control officers who work for the sheriff's department have come back to the scene and they've taken some evidence hoping to find out what happened. it has taken, however, quite a lot of public pressure to get to this point. along columbus parkway in vallejo, te remains of what some people call a mass murder still lie bushes just off the roadway. not of people but 12 dogs. >> we found bags, these three garbage bags full of all types of breeds and colors and sizes of dogs that were dead. >> reporter: nearby the tools someone may have used to kill them. ceci peters found the dogs in february, began talking about them in social media recently and now they've gone viral with local dog owners with missing pets. among them jayme who saw our report thursday night. >> i instantly started crying. >> reporter: her 6-year-old dog has been missing since july

fourth and jayme has a bad feeling. >> i feel like i need closure. >> reporter: the vallejo police department has ruled out felony animal abuse due mostly to a lack of evidence. critics say that's a problem. >> i don't understand it. personally i don't understand it. with the tools that were out here and everything. >> reporter: but the delay between the discovery by ceci peters and the first appearance by animal control officers did make a difference. it turns out she called the private number of an off-duty officer. they didn't get the message for six weeks. >> in this case, had we got the call when she first contacted and reached out to us in february, there would have been -- the scene would have been better preserved and we would have been able to collect far more evidence. >> reporter: since then they've taken the remains and the tools for further study, but without chips or collars it is impossible to identify the dogs now. for jayme and so many others like her, they must move on with good memories and the pain of never knowing. >> every time i see a dog, i'm

sunny skies and breezy conditions across the bay area now. windy in some spots, a wind advisory is in effect until 8:00 this evening for solano county. winds will generally be out of the northwest at 15 to 30 miles per hour. but gusts may reach 40 to 45 miles per hour. there is a possibility of blowing debris and difficulty driving in those areas affected by the wind. right now we have gusts around the bay area generally from 20 to 30 miles per hour. so the breezy conditions take us into the evening under blue skies. we look at the bay from mount tam. currently 65 degrees in san francisco. 70 in oakland, a cool 57 at half moon bay. check out this view of completely clear western sky from our east bay hills camera. it is currently 76 in santa rosa, napa 78, 73 in novato and fairfield, 77 in concord, 74 in livermore, and we have warmer weather lying ahead. i'll give you a look at the weekend and the 7 days ahead in just a few minutes. larry? >> thank you, spencer. i want to show you what is not a

new promenade in san francisco. it's actually the great highway along ocean beach, walkers and cyclists are taking advantage of the car-free road. it's not by design. the wind sent sand onto the traffic lanes so. lanes were close in both directions. no word yet on when it will reopen. meanwhile howelling winds causing huge problems all across southern california. take a look here. trees fell all across los angeles county overnight. brought down by just ferocious gusts. trees came down in sun valley, van nuys, and other parts of the san fernando valley. some of them even crushing cars. >> a large sink hole could pose big problems for drivers at the point reyes national sea shore. take a look at photos taken by the marin county sheriff's office. the sink hole is west of inverness. one lane is closed and the sheriff's office warns it may be closed through the weekend. the storm damage is worse than

first thought. alameda county tells abc7 news the road won't open next week after all. the road runs between 580 near castro valley and niles canyon and debris is still coming off a steep canyon wall. we have now learned the road likely won't open until sometime in june. farther north, redwood rose is also closed on the north side of castro valley. the ground hasn't stopped moving there as well. the team now expects redwood road to remain closed until at least september. >> a test train of bart's fleet of the future broke down overnight at the lake merritt station causing long delays that lasted into the morning commute. sky 7 shows you a four-car train was there after it was towed to bart's hayward shopsz. an agency spokesperson says the railcars are tested knightley when the system is closed. the agency is still trying to figure out exactly why. >> this is why we do the testing in the overnight hours. we want to make sure that when we are ready to run the trains

with passengers, that every reliability issue has been worked out. >> another train eventually pushed the broken test train to a side track just to get it out of the way, but not before it caused 20 minute delay system wide during the early morning commute hours. there is some good news for bart riders. the new station in milpitas and the station? san jose are on track to open by december which happens to be six months ahead of schedule. these two stations will expand bart's service into silicon valley. >> muni is just about done with the first round of road tests for its new fleet of light rail vehicles. for the past few weeks the agency has been testing these brand-new railcars overnight on the muni metro line between balboa park station and randall street. the test will end sunday. the new railcars are manufactured by the siemens company out of sacramento factory and will replace muni's fleet cars. >> it's been three months since the devastating flooding in san jose and it is not a quick recovery. >> see the impact on my 10-year-old granddaughter. i had to evacuate her from her

after months of finger pointing over the massive flooding in february, the san jose city council met face to face with board members from the santa clara valley water district. abc7 news reporter chris nguyen has the story. >> reporter: for those affected, the water district headquarters meeting could not come soon enough. >> there is no reason they couldn't take action sooner. they could have prevented a lot of the suffering that happened. >> reporter: as coyote creek flooded over president's day weekend, 14,000 residents were forced to evacuate leaving hundreds without a home. city officials estimate nearly $100 million in damage. >> these homeowners, are asking for your help. >> reporter: this afternoon the city council and the water district board voted to create an emergency action plan for both sides to follow. the plan which would be done by october, will define flood

threats by stages and also outline when warnings should be issued to residents and businesses. >> i think it's critical that we get real improvements in place this summer so we're prepared for the next wet season. and i know the teams will work together to make that happen. >> reporter: those improvements will include removing vegetation from coyote creek to ensure there is channel capacity for future storms. >> mother nature has her way of saying, listen, we're going to drought you for ten years then we're going to come back and hit you again. are you prepared? well, this is a wake up call. >> reporter: many hoping to see more action than talk. >> i've never seen it like this. this is the worst by far. >> reporter: both the city and the water district feeling the heat from residents knowing they can't afford a repeat of the past. in san jose, chris nguyen, abc 7 news. >> a leaky roof is giving san francisco a chance to rethink its oldest public square. abc7 news was in chinatown's portsmouth square as a design team surveyed visitors about making over the plaza. they want know who uses the

space and what people would like to see there. the idea is to create a modern take on traditional chinese architecture. they have to tear out parts of the plaza to fix a leak in the parking garage underneath. >> consumers aren't the only ones falling victim to online skamtz. new report finds google and facebook were targets of a $100 million scam. the two tech giants were targeted by a ligt waynian man in 2013. the justice department says the 48-year-old tricked google and facebook into paying for computer supplies by impersonating manufacturer based in asia. the suspect is now facing extradition from lithuania. a month after united airlines passenger was dragged off the plane, the company's ceo will testify on capitol hill. oscar munoz and leaders from other domestic carriers will testify before the house transportation and infrastructure committee tuesday. the focus will be on customer service policies and what's being done to improve service. >> all right. sports, the 49ers introduced their two first round picks this

afternoon. they were drafted last night. rookie gm john lynch did wheeling and dealing. solomon thomas was the third overall pick after a trade with the chicago bears many would describe as a fleecing. san francisco then traded back into the first round to get alabama linebacker ruben foster with the 31st overall pick. the funny story is foster was on the phone with the saints when the niners swooped in to get him. so he hung up the phone on the saints. we'll describe exactly what went down on abc7 news at 6:00. >> die hard football fans love the drama in the draft. >> they are captivated by an oakland native who turned the draft stage into something like you see in the movies. >> abc7 news anchor kristen sze is here with a name you'll be hearing a lot. kristen. >> yes, alma, larry. meet a ucla pass rusher who was born in oakland, raised in richmond, and graduated from kennedy high school. here now is his introduction on

wednesday. it's an area wide warm up. all the bay area will see a tumble in temperatures toward the end of the week. let's move over and take a look at live doppler 7. what's happening now, breezy conditions, sunny skies and relatively mild. this is a view from our rooftop camera looking at blue skies over the bae and embarcadero. these are our forecast futures. sunny and warmer continuing the next seven days up to about 90 degrees i understand inland. a few clouds will return by the end of next week and that will account for the cool down that is coming our way. overnight it will cool down under clear skies into the mid to upper 40s in our inland areas low 50s right around the bay. tomorrow spectacularly sunny and mild, actually a warm day in some spots. down in the south bay look for highs of 80 in san jose, 80 cupertino, sunnyvale. peninsula 79 in red wrood city. on the coast breezy and mild. a high of 70 expected at half moon bay. in and around san francisco look for highs in the low to mid 70s 73 degrees downtown, 69 the over

in the sunset district. in the north bay highs reaching 83. santa rosa and napa, 79 at san rafael, east bay 76, oakland 77, leandro, 79 fremont. over the hills highs of 81 at walnut creek and pleasanton. 83 at antioch. that's not the end of the warm weather as i pointed looking ahead a bit, sunday /warm again. couple degrees cooler. 80s in many mid-air utah jazz. same thing on tuesday, and of course as i mentioned wednesday is the peak of the warming so take a peek at the weather accuweather seven-day forecast. 90 degrees inland tuesday and wednesday, maybe above 90 in some spots on wednesday. the cooling begins thursday. by next friday a few clouds move in. we'll see temperatures in a more seasonal range. they'll be closer to the average highs actually. you'll see low to mid 60s on the coast, mid 70s around the bay. and low to mid-'80s inland. >> looks fantastic.

host the affair. it will be a considerably smaller affair with several news agencies declining to attend the event. the president abruptly tweeted he wouldn't be attending either. instead he will hold a big rally with supporters in pennsylvania. >> former president george h.w. bush has been released from a houston hospital. he was discharged this morning exactly two weeks after being admitted with chronic bronchitis and mild pneumonia. doctors wanted to get his bronchitis under control before releasing him. the hospital stay was president bush's second this year. in january, the 92-year-old was admitted with a more serious case of pneumonia. >> pope francis greeted with pomp and circumstance during historic visit to egypt. meant to fight religious militancy. he met with the president during a grand ceremony at the presidential palace. the two day visit will include meetings with the grand imam and spiritual leader of egypt's coptic orthodox church. the pope will attend mass

veterinarians. >> everything looks good. >> reporter: brought to the wildlife center after police say two hunters found the cubs near portland, saw no sign of their mother and decided to bring them home where they were kept for as long as two days before the hunters pointers contacted wildlife officials. something corey hand kick said he didn't realize when he found this bear cup injured, emaciated and alone in oregon last month. >> my heart was racing, i was trying to figure out what to do. >> reporter: after posting on social media asking for advice, he brought the bear to this wildlife center. now it and the cubs found this week are together being cared for in this enclosure with minimal human contact. >> it is very important they associate humans with bad things as opposed to being a source of food or a source of social interaction. >> reporter: which is why they urge people to call wildlife officials any time there is a concern about an animal rather than taking matters into their own hands. as for the cubs, they plan to keep them at the facility for a

company documentation that you either mailed back the equipment or gave it up in person. i'm talking about a receipt or a tracking number. i reached out to a few cable companies and comcast, for instance, and they say that if you return the equipment, even if you can't prove it, comcast says they'll take your word for it. if you had comcast as a provider talk to them. they'll correct any billing issues. if that still doesn't workout with your cable company, i want you to file a complaint with either the fcc or the attorney general's office. i'll post the links on abc7news.com. you have to keep your paperwork. you have to prove it occurred. >> well, i have a problem with my apartment that needs to be fixed because it's unsafe. what do i do? >> it is state law that landlords keep the place safe to live in. and by state law, too, if the landlord does not make repairs within 30 days, repairs for safety, you can pay for the repairs yourself, then deduct the money from your rent.
