responding to a health emergency this morning found something they did not expect. a woman and a man hoarding more than 100 dogs, cats and a turtle inside their home. animal services responded and said for the most part, the pets were well fed and healthy, but the house was no place to fit all those animals. >> and we already spoke with the animal owners and it was just a case of trying to do the right thing and help these animals out. >> the woman who had the health -- the man who was also hospitalized will be allowed to keep three pets, but has agreed to have the rest put in an mall shelters. the tense 19-hour standoff between a suspected killer police swat.w.a.t. units.

it began owed afternoon when police say a man killed the 47-year-old at larky park in walnut creek, that led to the standoff in martinez. the suspect was inside this mercedes the entire time. at one point he got out of the car hands up, but scrambled back inside after police fired two nonlethal bullets at him. >> the standoff went on for 18 hours with him and the reason why is preservation of life. >> they believe the suspect was suffering from hallucinations during the standoff probably because of drug use. a man who was -- 39-year-old matthew scott jones is also facing charges of attempted murder and hate crimes. officers say last night jones threw an incendiary device into an apartment window then torched

a car and then set off an explosion outside the fairfield police department. investigators say two of jones' neighbors accuse himng racial slurs against them earlier this month. an employee in the boys and girls club in petaluma accused of offering up a 6-year-old girl for sex benjamin goerke faces child endangerment charges. he sent a picture of a girl who was in the after school program sent pictures to fellow pedophiles. after years of short staffing, san jose residents will soon see more police officers on duty. 20 more recruits graduated from the police academy. abc7 news reporter david lui is live in san jose where the ceremony took place. >> reporter: san jose police

department has had troubles retaining police officers because of benefits and pay reduced. but those benefits were improved. the base pay for new recruits is $92,000 and too much scale is just over $100,000. this was a ceremony worthy of bagpipeses with a procession of recruit officers numbering 27, the largest academy class for san jose in four years. the proud families on hand to witness the graduation filled the ball room. on stage the shiny badges to be pinned on the officers after they are sworn in. their pay and benefits were shaved. a new contract in february that calls for a 10% raise over 3 1/2 years and years an approved benefits plan
