breaking news in union city, where a toddler has been struck and killed by a car in the parking lot of the safeway on dakota road. in just the last few minutes police sent us a news release about the incident, which happened this afternoon. they say the 23-month-old boy ran out into the parking lot from a store where his parents were shopping. the driver was not speeding and is cooperating with police. we have a crew on the way to the scene, and we'll let you know as soon as we get any new information. good evening. i'm eric thomas. now on to our other top story tonight, b.a.r.t. riders in oakland may have noticed more eyes on them. it's part of a rare emergency staffing decision. in response to the dozens of teenagers who boarded a b.a.r.t. train at the coliseum station one week ago and started robbing and beating people. and tonight we're hearing from a passenger who was on that train. abc 7 news reporter lisa

highway 92. police now say the suspect was trying to carjack someone. abc 7 news reporter loni rivera has our story from san mateo. >> 101 and 92. >> reporter: friday's rush hour commute came to i astandstill after chp responded to a call about a vehicle collision and a man with a gun on highway 101 in the peninsula. >> based on the statements we have now we know that this suspect was trying to use his firearm as a tool to steal the vehicle. >> reporter: sky 7 captured the suspect's gun lying on the side of the highway. witnesses shared cell phone video with us. and this photo with officers raising their firearms toward the suspect. >> all three officers fired their weapons. >> shots fired. suspect's down. >> reporter: police say witness accounts indicate those chp officers ordered the man to drop his gun. >> after many independent witness statements that officers took extreme measures to issue commands to drop that firearm,

file-sharing service after they say netflix didn't pay a ransom. netflix telling "variety" "we are aware of the situation," blaming the breach on a production vendor used by several major tv studios having its security compromised. and tonight a new threat. the hackers also claim to have unreleased shows and movies from other companies, tweeting, "who is next on the list? fox, ifc, nat geo and abc. oh what fun we're going to have." >> i think it's going to be a wake-up call for the rest of hollywood. >> reporter: this the first major entertainment breach since sony was hacked in 2014. those sieber criminals making executives' and stars' e-mails public and releasing movies including "annie" and "fury" before their scheduled premieres. and the site the "orange is the new black" episodes reportedly were posted on is illegal so abc couldn't independently verify the claims though netflix says the fbi is investigating.

in los angeles marci gonzalez, abc news. children in san francisco's outer mission excelsior neighborhood have something to dance about tonight. abc 7 news was at the mission childcare could be sore shum for a celebration and ribbon cutting. the center was in danger of being closed and its building sold to a developer. the city raised $5.7 million to buy it and keep it open. this is the largest subsidized childcare center in the city serving more than 200 preschool students. hundreds of young women will look their best on prom night thanks to the wife of a golden state warrior. abc 7 news was at oakland high school when the doors opened for today's prom dress giveaway. leslie west is the wife of warriors forward david west. she organized today's giveaway benefiting young women attending high school in oakland. leslie west began the dress giveaways more than a decade ago and she's led them in the cities where husband david has played. abc 7 news was at the sainta clara convention center when people came to share their passion for sneakers. the third annual sneaker-con attracted a crowd of mostly

. the giants are off to a disappointing start this season and it got a little worse as the padres roughed up their bullpen for eight runs in the sixth inning. let's go to at&t park where 49er great dwight clark got a warm welcome. giants starter matt cain deserves some applause as well. he allowed just one run over five innings while striking out seven. he was in line for the win as the giants took a 3-1 lead in the fifth on this two-run single up the middle by brandon belt. but after cain left for a pinch hitter it all came apart in the sixth. as the padres sent ten batters to the plate. austin hedges ties it up with a bloop single off chris stratton. stratton was tagged for five earned runs. will myers capped the inning with an eight-run blast over ramirez. it's game over. padres win 12-4.

at 9-16 the giants own the worst record in the national league. at minute maid park texans star j.j. watt threw out the first pitch. a's starter andrew triggs was also looking good on the mound. he tossed seven shutout innings while striking out a career-high nine batters. it stayed scoreless till the fourth. former astro jed lowry connects off joe musgrove. no doubt about this one. second home run in the year. lowry rips a base hit to right field. chad pender will try to score. but former athletic josh reddick has a gun for an arm. pender is out at the plate. oakland did get some insurance in the eighth as khris davis connects off will harris. it's his third home run in two days. davis is tied for the league lead with ten. the a's hang on to beat the astros 2-1. so they snap their five-game losing streak. the warriors won't start the second round of the playoffs until tuesday. so that means an eight day layoff between games. golden state will finally find out its next opponent tomorrow

indiana, and home video captured how quickly those flames moved. >> look at it collapsing the house. >> oh, wow. >> there's nothing you can do, guys. all they want to do is keep it from burning that other house down. >> you're looking at what happened as firefighters raced to the scene northwest of indianapolis. a couple and their 3-year-old daughter escaped from their burng home after smelling smoke and seeing the flames. firefighters couldn't save the home but they did keep the flames from spreading to other structures. 6 million gallons of waste water spilled into creeks around lake berryessa. this is video showing the waste going into the bell-shaped spillway. it was because of all the rain we got over the winter. the sacramento bee reports the sewage went into tributaries off the lake that provide drinking water for parts of vallejo and vacaville. officials suspect storm water seeped into storage ponds that store sewage. the report says the water was treated so the public is not at risk. bees are creating a buzz in

parts of northern california with a big increase in bee swarms. this is the time of year when bees start the colonization process again. and the recent rains have kept them inside until now. >> this year the weather affecting us, there's so much out there for them to eat, drink, plenty of wildflower for them. so they're a lot more active. way more active than a couple years ago. >> some beekeepers in sacramento say their calls about bee swarms have more than doubled. they say the comeback is impressive after losing so many colonies in recent years. a group of middle school students from the bay area could win the national science bowl. the department of energy shared these pictures of the team from joaquin miller middle school in san jose. they're competing right now in washington, d.c. and they've made it all the way to the top two. they get $1,000 for the school's science department for making it this far, and they'll try to win it all on monday morning. do you have some business to do in sunnyvale? well, it may have to wait because city workers have

pot-bellied pigs as pets could soon become reality in another bay area city. beniecia is voting on the plan on tuesday. but there's one big catch. a weight limit. and local experts say that's just not going to fly. bricks the potbellied pig is the biggest loser in the christiansen home. by that i mean he weighs 150 pounds these days, down from 300 a couple of years ago. his buddy mason is also over 100 pounds. owners martiany and chris have kept pigs since 1990 and say those weights are normal. >> though grow till they're 5 typically and i've seen 300-pounders. >> reporter: but what's normal in pleasant hill would be illegal illegal under bennisia's proposed bill and its weight limit. marcy thinks the restriction

. the niners and raiders were busy today as they selected a total of 12 players on the final day of the nfl draft. with its fourth-round pick san francisco took utah running back joe williams, who got the news at his home in pennsylvania. during his two seasons with the utes williams ran for almost 2,000 yards and 13 touchdowns. he finished his college career at levi's stadium. williams was the offensive mvp as utah got by indiana in the foster farms bowl. iowa tight end george kittle and louisiana tech receiver trent taylor were taken in the fifth round. in the sixth san francisco took a pair of linemen, mississippi's

d.j. jones and utah's pita taumoepenu. miami's adrian colbert was taken in the seventh round. >> with the 129th pick in the 2017 draft the oakland raiders select david sharp. >> that's nevada governor brian sandoval announcing the raiders' fourth-round pick from their future home in las vegas. sharp is a 6'6" 340-pound offensive lineman from florida. in the fifth round the raiders took wake forest linebacker markell lee. they had four picks in the seventh round, washington safety luani. alabama state offensive tackle ware, north carolina running back elijah hood and toledo defensive tackle trayvon hester. two more cal bears were drafted today. wide receiver chad hansen was picked by the jets in the fourth round. last season hansen had more than 1,200 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns. his teammate, running back khalfani muhammad, was taken by the titans in the seventh round.

well, the giants once again own the worst record in the national league as they lost to the padres tonight. among those at at&t park, 49er favorite dwight clark who got a warm welcome. giants starter matt cain deserves some applause as well. he allowed just one run over five innings while striking out seven. but after after pin ch hitter it all came apart. will myers caps the eight-run inning with a three-run blast off neil ramirez. the giants lose 12-4 and drop to 9-16. they'll wrap up the series tomorrow before going on a nine-game road trip. at minute maid park texans starter j.j. watt threw out the first pitch. a's starter andrew triggs was also looking pretty good on the mound. he threw seven shutout innings while striking out a career-high nine batters. oakland made it 2-0 in the eighth as khris davis connects off will harris. it's his third home run in two days. davis is tied for the league

lead with ten. the a's beat the astros 2-1, so they snap their five-game losing streak. the angels were at texas. the rangers' carlos gomez needed a home run to hit for the cycle. he got it in the seventh. it's way out of here. gomez went 4 for 4 as texas beats the angels 6-3. it's the second time he's hit for the cycle. the braves' matt kemp also had a game to remember. tonight in milwaukee he went 3 for 5 with five rbi. all three of his hits were home runs. it's the first time the 32-year-old outfielder has hit three homers in one contest. he now has eight this season. atlanta beat the brewers 11-3. it's their fourth straight victory. stanley cup playoffs, rangers at ottawa. with under four minutes left the senators' jean gabriel peugeot ties it one a pair of goals. he gets a hat trick here and sends the contest to overtime. ottawa would win it in double overtime as he scores yet again. his fourth goal of the game gives the senators a 6-5 victory. they lead the series two games

to none. the penguins have also taken a 2-0 lead overt capitals. sidney crosby with the assist to phil kessel, who scores. on the replay you can see crosby went between his legs before getting the puck to kessel. pittsburgh wins 6-2. crosby with a pair of assists. we now head to gator country. nawlins for the pga zurich classic using the team format jordan spieth and ryan palmer could be in the lead if it wasn't for their poor putting. been there, done that. they were in fourth place at 14 under par. the team of jonas blix and 23-year-old cameron smith has a four-stroke lead. smith drains the birdie putt here. they're 19 under par. finally, as the last player taken in the nfl draft, chad kelly is this year's mr. irrelevant. he was picked by the broncos after waiting for 252 other players to be chosen. he got so bored he actually fell asleep during the sixth round. kelly, though, will soon be the center of attention as newport beach honors him during mr. irrelevant week.
