or their hit show would be leaked online. attacks like these now on the rise. good evening. thanks for joining us on this sunday. i'm tom llamas. we begin with the one-two strike of tornadoes and flooding. at least 13 dead across 4 states. a massive tornado touching down in canton, texas. a 35-mile-long path of destruction killing four and sending dozens to the hospital. and prom night, cancelled. the venue taking a direct hit, as some early promgoers sought shelter inside. this, a devastating scene from the sky. homes obliterated. officials describing the scene as heartbreaking. to the north and east, that same system delivering deadly flooding. several victims swept away. high water rescues under way. and in arkansas, the desperate

search for two children. the threat not over yet. here's marci gonzalez. >> reporter: tonight, at least four people dead after four powerful tornadoes tore through texas. >> there's a tornado crossing the road right in front of us. >> reporter: this giant wedge tornado slamming into the town of canton. ripping homes from their foundations. >> completely demolished. >> reporter: leaving trucks wrapped around trees. and at this car dealership, an entire lot of new vehicles, demolished. >> what could've happened to all of these people, and my son could've been in there. >> reporter: here at the rustic barn, it was prom night. the teens just starting to arrive when the dance's dj, kris ingram, saw the giant twister moving towards them. >> i ran in, i said we gotta get cover, it's gonna be a direct hit. >> reporter: he and the venue's owner rushing about 20 people into 2 bathrooms and this storage closet, where they rode out the storm. >> people were screaming and crying.

we backed our backs up against the door. >> reporter: when they finally came out, this is what they saw, the building torn apart. the three rooms they were hiding in, the only ones left standing. >> it was unbelievable to see that there was no building left except where we were located. >> not a single one of us was hurt, scratched or anything. god was with us. there's no doubt on that. >> reporter: but in other areas along the tornadoes' destructive paths, at least 49 people were hurt, some as one twister touched down right onto interstate 20. search and rescue operations under way, with two still missing. and today, another tornado, hitting mississippi, two person there feared dead. back in canton tonight, the owners here, trying to sort through the damage. they say had the tornado hit 45 minutes later when the prom was set to start, dozens more teens would have been right here in this now demolished building. tom? >> marci, thanks so much. while it's twisters in

texas, there is also deadly flooding in other states. the search ongoing for two children swept away in arkansas. here's phillip mena. >> reporter: search and rescue crews, arm in arm, looking for any sign of two children, swept away by powerful floodwaters. the 18-month-old girl and 4-year-old boy were trapped inside a truck that was swept away. the mother managed to escape. this is a very dangerous operation. the further downstream they go, the faster the water is rushing, and the harder it is for them to hold their footing. right now, parts of arkansas, oklahoma, and missouri all under a state of emergency. several deaths, blamed on this storm, including a firefighter, hit by a car while checking utility lines. authorities there ordering evacuations. for some, it was too late. this pregnant mother and her husband trapped. firefighters rescuing them by boat. in missouri, this man barely

escaping from his truck before it was submerged in rushing waters. in oklahoma, hail and heavy wind pounding the state, rushing water trapping people inside this restaurant near tulsa. and an 8-year-old boy sucked into a drain in illinois. somehow coming out, 50 feet on the other end, alive and okay. >> we got him in this pipe. >> the street, all this, was flooded when we came home. >> reporter: the williams family going inside their waterlogged home for the first time. >> it's all like this. >> phillip, that rain has slowed, but the threat is far from over? >> reporter: that's right, tom. rivers and creeks like the one behind me, they'll continue to rise as all this water makes its way downstream. as for the search for the children, rescue crews working against the clock. they'll have to suspend the search once it's dark. >> phillip, thank you.

as that severe weather threat moves into the northeast, wind-whipped snow battering the plains states tonight. this is the scene in goodland, kst -- kansas. whiteout conditions reported. here's rob marciano, tracking the weather. >> reporter: a blizzard in western kansas, the national guard going out to help people stranded on the highway. look all the warnings. and the flood warnings, that will last the next several days, and the tornado watch in the south. that will continue tonight, as it drifts to the north. and tomorrow morning, birmingham, atlanta, may see storms. and then, another pulse into ohio, pittsburgh, western new york. an enhanced risk of severe weather. and thunderstorms, could have damaging winds, large hail, and tornado risk. the flood risk will continue through this week. >> rob, thank you.

let's turn now to politics. a new week and new questions for the white house, after extending an invitation to philippine leader rodrigo duterte. accused of human rights abuses. including ordering the kill of drug suspects outside the legal system. trump's chief of staff defending the decision on "this week." bob woodruff is in seoul, south korea. >> reporter: tonight, an invitation from the white house for a world leader accused of human rights abuses. president trump is inviting the philippines' president rodrigo duterte for a visit. duterte faces international outrage over his ultraviolent and anti-drug campaign. but he's a potential ally in the region on north korea. >> human rights don't matter now? >> absolutely not.

but the issues facing us in north korea are so serious, we need cooperation at some level with as many partners in the area that we can get to make sure we have our ducks in a row. >> reporter: the hermit kingdom continues to be a major international trouble spot. just today, north korea threatened a u.s. submarine deployed nearby, "it will meet a miserable end and turn into an underwater ghost." at trump's event in harrisburg last night, abc news asked if he plans to respond to friday's missile launch. >> you'll soon find out, won't you? >> does that mean military action? >> you'll soon find out. >> reporter: until now, the white house has drawn a distinction between missile launches and nuclear tests. >> if he does a nuclear test, i will not be happy. >> reporter: today, trump even expressed grudging admiration for kim jong-un. >> and, at a very young age, he was able to assume power. a lot of people, i'm sure, tried to take that power away, whether it was his uncle or anybody else. and he was able to do it.

so, obviously, he's a pretty smart cookie. >> reporter: so, how does the philippines' controversial leader fit into all this? we saw firsthand how he deals with suspected criminals in his country. his troops have killed more than 7,000 people since duterte came to power. in the crowd, a worried mother. soon, she learns her son is gone. oh, no. that's your son? >> outwardly it appears to be a deal with the devil. this is a person who has participated in extrajudicial killings of drug dealers and who thinks it's okay to kill journalists. >> reporter: the philippines spoke this weekend about the north korean conflict. urging the u.s. to be prudent and patient, and saying both the u.s. and north korea are playing with toys. >> bob, thanks. with the 100-day milestone behind him, president trump will try to revive a health care deal, while launching a fresh assault on the press.

rally in harrisburg instead. >> they are gathered together for the white house correspondents' dinner without the president. >> reporter: he's the first sitting president to miss the dinner since 1981. ronald reagan had an excuse. he'd been shot less than a month earlier. and he even managed to call in from camp david, where he was convalescing. >> i could not possibly be more thrilled than to be more than 100 miles away from the washington swamp and spending my evening with all of you. >> reporter: today, the white house chief of staff told jon karl the president may seek to change the libel laws in order to make it easier to prosecute news outlets. >> i think it's something that we've looked at and how that gets executed or whether that goes anywhere is a different story.

authorities tracking leads in the hunt for 28-year-old david watson. convicted of trying to kill a police officer. authorities releasing images of watson's tattoos. which include the word "evil" on the back of his neck. next tonight to southern california, a deadly shooting spree under investigation. one victim dead, three injured in los angeles. here's matt gutman. >> reporter: tonight, police investigating a deadly shooting spree in los angeles. the suspects leaving bullet-riddled cars in their wake. >> male driver with a female passenger, both hispanic. male handed the female a gun and shot the victim unprovoked. >> reporter: at 2:15 p.m. saturday, authorities claim a man and woman carjacked a green suv. the pair speeding off. just two hours later, police getting distress calls about a man and woman shooting pedestrians from their car.

have stolen content from fox, ifc, nat geo and abc, making more ransom demands. "our offers are still on the table for now." >> the companies need to be good all the time. the hackers need to be lucky once. anything you have stored electronically has risk. >> reporter: dark overlord has targeted more than hollywood. last january, swiping data from a cancer charity. attacks like this, up 50% last year alone. >> the best option for us, even though it was the last and worst option for us, was to pay the ransom. >> reporter: in a statement, netflix says they're aware of the situation. the fbi is also aware, but they're not commenting beyond that. >> mara, thank you. coming up next, the apology from a supermodel over the vacation disaster in the bahamas.

finally tonight, a charitable act with a twist. giving is the long and short of it for this family. here's gloria riviera. >> these three are triplets and the two with similar haircuts are the twins. >> reporter: this is what the six kannisto brothers -- yes, there are six of them -- look like today. this is earlier in the week. six boys, six heads of long, flowing locks plus mom's, all donated to remember someone special. >> three years ago, a friend of ours had a son that passed away from cancer. on the first anniversary of his passing, my three oldest boys donated their hair in his memory. >> reporter: well, the little ones wanted in.

and so, since 2015, this hasn't happened. not a single hair cut on a kannisto boy's head until now. mom's, too. this week, the kannisto family collectively donated 17 feet of hair to an organization that makes wigs for sick kids. >> it was so funny the day after i said, i don't recognize my own children. >> reporter: those new 'dos, coming with some good feelings too. >> it makes me feel a bit better about myself knowing that i can do something to make someone else happy. >> reporter: they plan to do it again, so more children can let let their hair down again, and smile. gloria riviera, abc news, washington. >> tonight we salute the kannisto family for being "america strong." thanks so much for watching. i'm tom llamas in new york. salmon fishing boat and it has now been converted to try to help save california's struggling salmon population. right now it is shuttling 200 adolescent salmon from a couple state hatcheries out to the ocean. chinook samson are native to san francisco. when they are a ults did, they return to the same rivers to release their eggs. dams, heavy river traffic and over fishing has made the swim out to the ocean treacherous. so it is part of an experiment to see if giving the salmon a ride down river will help their survival rates. >> we're trying to show that barging salmon down the river will increase their survival rate. we think significantly. >> reporter: 200,000 salmon aboard the marva will bring the grand total
