brother. we'll get back to that later, but right now, we have breaking news this morning. big deal in congress overnight, and terrible storms tearing through the south. you can see the damage right there in texas. >> yeah, rob is on the scene for us. we'll have more on that in a moment. first, we want to get to that other big breaking story. that mass shooting in california. a gunman opening fire at an apartment complex. abc's matt gutman is there on the scene for us in la jolla. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, good morning, robin. that shooting happened at a pool about 150 feet in that direction you can see the officers down there and the mobile command unit. eyewitnesses say a white male had a beer in one hand and a gun in another. a large caliber pistol. he started mowing people down, all of them people of color. this lasted for minutes. gave him enough time to reload, even taunt some of his victims until police finally took him down.

the shooting erupted at 6:00 p.m. during a pool party at this upscale apartment complex in affluent la jolla, california. >> three people down, the suspect is reloading his gun in the pool area. >> reporter: according to police the woman killed and six of the seven others injured were african-american. the other victim was a latino male. the shooter, a 49-year-old white man named pete selis. his motive not known but witnesses say selis sat calm with a beer in one hand and a gun in the other as he sprayed bullets at the 30 partygoers at the pool. >> a lot of people screaming and about a minute later another round of six or seven shots, more people screaming. >> reporter: residents frantically scrambling to safety as calls to 911 began pouring in. >> he is sitting in a lawn chair. he is telling people to leave. >> i heard what sounded like fireworks. i wasn't sure what it was and then i smelled smoke and i turned around and i heard people screaming and running. >> reporter: a police helicopter

reached the area first where it spotted the shooter reloading his weapon. three officers arrived on the scene with guns drawn and confronted the man. >> the suspect pointed the gun at our officers and our -- three of our officers fired on the suspect. >> reporter: he died in that hail of bullets shortly thereafter. according to the "l.a. times" he filed bankruptcy in 2015 and listed his occupation as a car mechanic with two children and a stepson. you can see crime scene investigators still working the scene. selis lived here at the complex but police say they don't have a concrete motive yet and they are going to investigate whether or not this was a racially motivated crime. robin. >> all right, matt, thank you. now to the deadly storms hitting the center of the country. tornadoes and flooding destroying homes and injuring dozens. let's take a look at the scene from the sky in canton, texas where a massive ef-3 tornado tore through the area, and let's

go right to abc's rob marciano who is there. good morning, rob. >> good morning, michael. these were deadly tornadoes, four of them to hit this area. the one that hit here, 140-mile-an-hour winds ripping apart this building which was preparing to host a prom when there were 20 people inside. they crammed into two small bathrooms and a closet which would save their lives. this was all part of a massive system still plowing across the country. >> we got a baby. call 911. >> reporter: in texas it was a race against time as neighbors turn into heros. the harrowing event to rescue an infant and a 2-year-old from a car flipped over, rapidly filling with floodwater. the severe storm responsible for at least 14 deaths and heart-stopping scenes like this. >> there is a tornado crossing the road right in front of us. >> reporter: overnight, millions in the path of that deadly spring system as it marches east. in illinois, raging floodwaters responsible for this chilling

call. >> 8-year-old child swept into a drainpipe. >> reporter: the boy, miraculously rescued 50 feet downstream with no visible injuries. >> we got him in this pipe. >> reporter: in missouri the governor declaring a state of emergency. residents being evacuated there. in arkansas -- >> we've got our work ahead of us. no doubt. >> reporter: -- cars and roads no match for this storm. the heavy rain triggering a massive deep south deluge. some areas in the south accumulating nearly a foot of rain in just the last three days. this morning, residents in texas left picking up the pieces. >> looks like someone took a broom and just pushed it over. >> reporter: the rustic barn in canton was set to host prom night. >> i ran in and said we got to get covered. it's going to be a direct hit. >> reporter: the venue nearly reduced to rubble. the only thing left standing, this storage closet. >> unbelievable to see no building left except where we were located. >> not a single one of us was hurt, scratched. god was with us, no doubt on that.

>> another look at the damage. you see how important it was for them to get to an interior room. timing was on their side as well. if it hit an hour later, there would have been 80 teenagers inside this building which means all in all, it could have been worse here in canton. michael. michael. >> thank you, rob. we're glad they're okay. let's go to ginger for more on where the system is heading next. there you go, ginger. >> yeah, michael. you have to see this thing. that rotating cloud, the almost textbook look at it, the cold front attached and severe storms in mississippi and alabama this morning, or alabama itself, but look at this. warnings and alerts from minnesota down through the florida panhandle where you can see gusts up to 35 miles an hour to flood watches that make their way into northern new england in maine there and it's that severe threat, michael. this is what i'm concerned about. buffalo to pittsburgh, down into virginia, that's the enhanced area and the timing for this is starts afternoon, after i'd say 2:00 and, george, all the way through tonight the potential for damaging wind, hail, yes,

even tornadoes in that region. >> not over yet. thanks very much. we're going to get the latest now from washington where the president started his second 100 days taking on the tensions of north korea, and says the u.s. might be forced to strike their nuclear weapons and called kim jong-un a pretty smart cookie. white house hoping for a health care vote and president trump says obamacare is dead and promises to guarantee coverage of pre-existing conditions but that absent from the latest gop plan and congress is going to fund the government through september and mary bruce on capitol hill with the details. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning. a rare moment of agreement on capitol hill late last night. republicans and democrats agreeing on a spending bill. nearly $1 trillion to fund the government through september. now, this ends any suspense over a government shutdown and delivers victories for both parties. republicans are likely to tout a big boost in military spending, more than $12 billion, while democrats will be pleased they were able to hold off cuts to domestic programs including

medical research and infrastructure but this catch-all spending bill expected to pass later this week is the the first bipartisan legislative victory for the president during his administration. >> the other big one, democrats refusing to fund president trump's border wall but there is money for border security. what will it cover? >> reporter: yeah, george. perhaps what's more interesting than what's in the bill is what's not in the bill. there is no funding for the president's border wall. now, this does include $1.5 billion for border security but none will go to construction of a physical barrier despite the president's insistence that that funding be included. that fight over the wall will have to wait at least until the fall. >> thanks very much. george, now to the growing tensions with north korea. president trump speaking out about the threat and coming under fire for inviting the president of the philippines to the white house as he tries to build alliances. our chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz has more on that. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, robin.

president trump had strong words for north korea's leader, but that invitation to the philippines president could create a firestorm of criticism for his human rights abuses. tensions on the rise, president trump responding to north korea's latest failed missile launch. >> perhaps they're just not very good missiles, but eventually, he'll have good missiles. >> reporter: and on the possibility of a nuclear test. >> if he does a nuclear test, i will not be happy. >> reporter: with the "uss carl vinson" aircraft carrier now in waters near the peninsula, president trump keeping the military option on the table if north korea obtains long-range missiles. >> it is a chess game. i just don't want people to know what my thinking is, so eventually he will have a better delivery system and if that happens, we can't allow it to happen. >> reporter: and president trump saying not to underestimate kim jong-un. >> at a very young age he was able to assume power so

obviously he's a pretty smart cookie. >> reporter: but president trump facing new controversy this morning for inviting philippines president rodrigo duterte to the white house. duterte has faced international criticism. his war on drugs, reportedly responsible for over 7,000 extrajudicial killings since his inauguration in june of 2016, but the administration defending the invitation. >> does that mean human rights don't matter? >> absolutely not. it doesn't mean human rights don't matter but what it does mean is that the issues facing us developing out of north korea are so serious that we need cooperation at some level with as many partners in the area as we can get. >> reporter: the real rationale for president trump's invitation is likely about china. duterte threatened to kick out the u.s. military while aligning itself closer to china and president trump wants to change that, george. >> okay, martha, thanks very much. president trump celebrated

his 100th day with a rally in harrisburg, pennsylvania, where he laid into the media as so many were sitting down at the annual white house correspondents' dinner and our senior white house correspondent, cecilia vega has all the details. cecilia, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it was quite the split screen, journalists celebrating the first amendment while the president at a rally bashing the media. it was the annual nerd prom. this time, minus the star attraction. >> welcome to the series finale of the white house correspondents' dinner. >> reporter: the no-show president went to pennsylvania instead, where he held a competing event with a competing message. >> they are gathered together for the white house correspondents' dinner without the president. and i could not possibly be more thrilled than to be more than 100 miles away from washington spending my evening with all of

you. >> reporter: president trump marked his 100th day by taking direct aim at the media. >> and look at the media back there. they would actually rather be here. >> reporter: this morning, the white house is also taking another look at health care. after that failed first attempt at repealing and replacing obamacare, president trump says the latest proposal will continue to protect people with pre-existing conditions. >> pre-existing conditions are in the bill, and i mandated it. i said it has to be. we have -- we're going to have lower premiums. this bill is much different than it was a little while ago, okay. this bill has evolved. >> reporter: the white house may be hoping for a vote soon but republicans on capitol hill say there is no health care vote scheduled yet and they will not vote until they've got the votes to pass this. one aide telling us at this point, there is no health care vote scheduled so far for this week. >> they're going to keep trying. thanks very much. let's bring in our white house correspondent, jon karl, for more on this, and start with that health care bill, jon.

the big sticking point is this question of preexisting conditions and the president says he wants to guarantee it but the bill before congress right now would allow states to charge people higher premiums. >> reporter: it sure would, george. the states would be able to basically waive that and allow insurance companies to charge higher premiums but the condition that they would have to provide an alternative coverage mechanism for those that are priced out of the market, but, george, the white house is confident, they say. they tell me this bill will pass the house, likely this week. there are still questions about whether or not moderates will support it, but i have talked to conservatives in the house and the senate who do say they like this bill better than what was up last time. >> different situation in the senate but the house first. on the 100 days the president not quite giving up on this putting out a new ad, going to spend $1.5 million to tout his accomplishments over the first 100 days and keep on bashing of the media. >> reporter: yeah. this is something else.

a campaign ad 100 days into his presidency, the president as you remember, called the 100 days a ridiculous standard to judge him by but this touts his accomplishments and takes a whack at the media for not recognizing it. >> meantime, on that media bashing, a lot of eyebrows raised yesterday. you were talking to reince priebus on "this week" and he suggested that president trump was still looking at opening up these libel laws so he could sue over unfair coverage. >> reporter: this surprised me, frankly. he said they are looking into this, making it possible for the president to sue news organizations for bad coverage. george, he would have to do a constitutional amendment to actually pull that off. >> not going anywhere fast. jon karl, thanks very much. amy is here with today's other top stories. good morning, guys. we begin at kennedy space center right now where the private space company spacex is launching a classified u.s. intelligence satellite. this morning. >> five, four, three, two, one,

zero. liftoff. a sensor problem forced yesterday's launch to be scrubbed within 52 seconds left in the countdown. the company landed it lack on the launch pad. this is the company's fifth mission so far this year. but this is the first mission if carried out for the u.s. military. in the meantime, at least 27 people have been injured after an international flight ran into turbulence. you can see the chaos in the cabin here just as the aeroflot jet from moscow was descending into bangkok. three babies were among the people injured as they were thrown across the cabin. witnesses report some people lost consciousness. others injured their spines and broke their noses. the plane eventually landed safely. a strong earthquake shook parts of alaska registering 6.2.

weekend ticket packages running from $1,500 to $12,000. but this morning the organizers of the failed fyre festival are feeling the heat. >> we had no electricity, there was no showers. there was no bathrooms, no like running water. >> the actual experience exceeds all expectations. >> reporter: the expectation luxurious accommodations, the reality, more like a disaster relief campsite. a secluded private island getaway? nope. just minutes away from a sandals resort and gourmet meals provided by steven starr, exchange for these plain cheese sandwiches after the chef backed out. one attendee posting this is how fyre festival handles luggage, drop it out of a shipping container at night. >> the exact opposite of everything we were promised. ♪ >> reporter: rapper ja rule and entrepreneur billy mcfarland co-founded it charging thousands of dollars. >> a big storm came through and busted our water system and

affected half of the housing tents. >> reporter: but warning signs reportedly coming weeks earlier. one of the festival's purchases telling "new york" magazine when she arrived six weeks ago festival vendors weren't in place, no stage had been rented. transportation had not been arranged. ♪ say it ain't so i will not go ♪ >> reporter: blink 182 pulling out of the event, a mere day before the start tweeting we're not confident we would have what we need to give you the quality of performances we always give our fans. celebs like supermodel bella hadid hired to appear in this promotional video and kendall jenner paid to promote fyre on instagram and hadid posting sunday even though this was not my project whatsoever, i feel so sorry and badly because this is something i couldn't stand by. even getting off the island was a nightmare. >> we're going to have to deplane everybody. >> reporter: passengers stuck at the international airport without food or water locked in for more than ten hours.

>> we took a big jump here and a big risk and it failed. >> reporter: memes like these trying to encapsulate the experience, another writing found the masterminds behind the fyre festival. and you know what's not a joke, mark geragos, the celebrity attorney has filed a class action lawsuit against the fyre festival seeking damages in excess of $100 million meanwhile, we're told concertgoers will get a refund and a free ticket to next year's event. yeah, they're going to try this all over again on a u.s. beach, george. >> thanks, gio. we are joined by brett linkletter who headed down to the bahamas for that. thanks for joining us. we see you're on the beach in miami. tell us what hooked you to go down to the bahamas in the first place? >> it was back in december, i get a call from my buddy. he goes, brett, give me five minutes of your undivided attention. i said okay what's up. he says i found this new festival in the bahamas. it's going to be a luxury experience with blink 182,

amegos and a ton of great performers. and it's going to be the next coolest thing and guess what, it's only 500 bucks. i was like, dude, this looks like a total scam. i don't know. we looked into it a little bit more and looked like a real legit thing and bought tickets on the spot. >> you landed on thursday. what did you find? >> well, in miami airport before we got there, we were told that the villas and basically the festival wasn't set up yet. they took us to this halfway location, kind of like a makeshift bar set up on the beach and i guess because the festival wasn't ready yet, they were just serving drinks to everyone on this random beach which we were almost excited about, right. landing in the bahamas and now all you can drink and thought it would be a cool thing. what we thought was cool got really bad really fast. the drinks were at room temperature. there was absolutely no food. people had been there the entire day drunk, kind of crazy at this point and starving. >> when did you realize this wasn't going to be a concert? we good to the festival location.

it was 10:00. right when we got there we realized this was not going to be a real thing and found out every band canceled that night and found out that they were not going to have enough tents to supply it for the entire festival so i know everyone keeps saying online and the internet kind of crazy but it was literally like "the hunger games." people were sprinting trying to find a place to sleep. >> kind of a high class "hunger games," but i guess you should have followed your first instinct, $500 was too good to be true. >> the day before the festival my parents called and said we've heard pretty weird rumors about this festival. are you sure you want to go. mom, come on, absolutely, i'm going to go to this thing. it is way too cool. but i guess she was right and maybe she had mother's intuition but it was pretty insane. >> so they're now offering full -- they're saying they're offering full refunds. is that good enough for you? >> yeah, i mean end of the day like it was an insane experience. glad everyone got home safe and sound.

we're back now with "gma investigates." so many of us have faced the dreaded cracked phone screen. cell phone repairs, are you ready for this, it's a $4 billion industry. so our becky worley is taking a crack at how to fix your phone without breaking the bank. joining us now from walnut creek, california. good morning, becky.

>> good morning, robin. you want me to take five of these phones that cost over $600 and drop them to crack them and figure out the best way to fix the screen? you've got it. ♪ we dropped five iphones with no cracks onto concrete turning each into this. ouch. all to answer the question what's the least expensive and fastest way to fix a screen and be sure it still works? the five ways we've identified take it to the maker, in this case the apple store, a mall kiosk. >> 20 minutes. >> okay. >> reporter: a mom and pop local fix-it store. >> it's so bad. services that come to you even your home like icracked to fix your phone. >> you can repair that. >> you can repair it? >> uh-huh. >> finally a do it yourself kit.

let's start there. even though it's the least expensive at $90. >> this was a bad idea. >> it does have all the parts you need, even tools. good instructions for all 44 steps. >> okay. that is the microphone cord and it is ripped off the microphone. basically i broke the phone. so to save roughly 30 bucks i just destroyed a nearly $600 phone. now, let's look at price and speed for the other four options. the most expensive, the mall kios at $139 but the quickest at 22 minutes. next the apple store, $129, it took 95 minutes with a genius bar appointment. the come to your house option, icracked, $119 and 38 minutes. super convenient. and the mom and pop store, the least expensive at $105, it took 35 minutes. but what about the quality of the repairs? for that we bring in dan frakes from the wirecutter.

>> you're happy with the repairs? >> yeah. >> but he points out the phone icracked fixed -- >> has a weird edge like the screen doesn't quite fit flush with the side. >> reporter: the folks at icracked note phones that have been dropped often have dents and dings ha can make the new screen a little irregular but they guarantee their work and say they'll fix it again for free. our mall kiosk is another story. >> you hear a pop when you put pressure on it. we took the phone back to the mall and asked the technician to replace the glass again. the folks there told us they have a one month warranty but since my screen hasn't yet popped out, they weren't obliged to fix it. finally our apple store repair had one small issue. so, this is the home key. how would you describe this? >> feels like it's oversensitive. it is acting double presses. >> reporter: we took it back to apple. all right. fixed. in the end it's hard to name a clear winner. our mom and pop store was the least expensive and great quality but you might not get that at every local store so

we're back with our big board. a major security breach for netflix targeted by a hacker who leaked unreleased episodes of "orange is the new black" because netflix wouldn't pay a ransom. jason tanz joins us. it turns out netflix, they're already a victim. "orange is the new black" is out there but this hacker threatening other networks as well? yeah, that's right. this is a problem that goes beyond netflix and claims to have 36 different television shows and movie as valuable he's going to start leaking. the problem is it's sort of a weakest link problem. they didn't hack into netflix specifically but a post-production sound mixing studio and that's the problem that all these shows involve a ton of partners and you're only as good as the weakest partner. >> used to be where vhs tape somebody -- they set it up and see people getting popcorn if you see one of those but could this be the future of piracy and hacking? how does this change the industry? >> well, we'll see.

you know, "game of thrones" has been the top five -- i'm sorry for the last five years has been the most pirated show and really hasn't hurt hbo. doesn't seem to hurt "game of thrones" that much. this is a subscription model so it's not the same thing as with a movie every time somebody watches it that's money you're not getting. netflix is looking into it. we're aware of the situation. a production vendor used by several major tv studios had its security compromised and the appropriate law enforcement authorities are involved. but the dark over-lord has claimed to have material from fox. nat geo. abc. we'll see where it goes. >> no sense any of these networks will pay a ransom, right? >> hard to imagine. they're only worth it if somebody pays it. if they keep up a wall of not paying there is no business model for it in other cyberthreat. we did a version called the ten concerts facebook meme. why are some security experts warning about this. >> this is the deal where you list ten concerts, nine of which

you went to and one fake and your friends guess which one is fake. sometimes those backup security questions are what was your first concert. i think it's overblown. you're sharing a ton of information over time. if you're concerned get two-factor authentication and use a password app. that's probably a better way than not participating in this. >> nobody's business what concerts i went to, george. now we'll go to that shark alert. a woman attacked at a popular california beach over the weekend was airlifted to the hospital and this is the latest incident coming as lifeguards test out new technology like drones to see if they can help keep swimmers safe and t.j. holmes joins us from seabright, new jersey. just days ago a drone captured footage of a shark swimming beneath the surface in australia. how can this technology help protect these beachgoers? >> reporter: need to remind viewers about how many were killed in the u.s. last year in

a shark encounter, zero. the year before that, one. the year before that, zero. the year before that, one. so the chances are extremely unlikely, but if you can't sleep one night and catch a "jaws" marathon those numbers don't make you feel better especially when you show a video like that to think that some people are out there and don't know sharks are lurking underneath them. these drones can give you a bird's-eye view and standing out on a beach you're looking at murky water and don't know what's out there so that's what the drones can do, give you somewhat peace of mind and give you a heads-up. >> you got one behind you. can you show us how it works? >> let's go ahead and get it in the air and launch it and head down the shoreline. my drone operators are about 50 yards behind me so they're not even on the beach so this thing takes off and can give us a view, again, it's murky out there. i have no idea what's in the waters. you can send a drone out to give you a view. now, how do you get word back to people? well, a couple of different ways. one is drones can be sent hours

pistol in another. started mowing people down and everybody he shot was a person of color. this lasted four minutes and had time to reload. now, we have learned he got laid off from a job in 2015 but officers don't have a concrete motive. they are likely to investigate whether or not this was a racially motivated crime. amy. >> all right, matt gutman, thank you. a line of deadly spring storms is taking aim at millions of americans this morning from north carolina to new york and this all comes after a weekend of flooding and tornadoes that killed at least 14 people across four states in the south and midwest. hardest hit was canton, texas, where a tornado carved a path of destruction 35 miles long. ripping homes off their foundations and wrapping trucks around trees. just ten miles north, good samaritans rescued an instant and 2-year-old from this truck that flipped over in those floodwaters. they performed cpr on the infant who is thankfully recovering in

a hospital this morning. overnight, congress reached a bipartisan deal to prevent a government shutdown. the trillion dollar spending plan will keep the government running through september. it increases spending on border security but does not fund the president's border wall. also the deal does not block funding for planned parenthood. president trump is hoping to strike a deal on a plan to replace obamacare with new progress reported on capitol hill. this weekend, the president guaranteed protection for people with preexisting medical conditions. and from london this morning we are getting that new look at princess charlotte ahead of her second birthday tomorrow. she's seen here enjoying the outdoors in a picture taken by her mother duchess kate. she and prince william say they are delighted to share the photo. and finally, we're delighted with a great update on a good friend of this program. we recently introduced you to 15-year-old j.j. robertson, a huge fan of the new orleans saints who became an honorary member of the team. he has a condition that stunts his growth.

the actress revealing she is now in remission and opening up about what's next. here's a look at her journey. >> reporter: after facing breast cancer for more than two years, actress shannen doherty sharing some good news. the 46-year-old opening up on instagram saying she's in remission. today was and is a moment. what does remission mean? i heard that word and have no idea how to react. good news? yes. overwhelming, yes. now more waiting. the actress publicly sharing her journey as she went through excruciating chemotherapy. >> you can see just from the comments people write that she's been there indirectly for many, many women who are going through this. >> that would be like reverse culture shock. >> reporter: doherty rose to fame for her role in the 1990s teen drama, "beverly hills 90210," and "charmed," and although in remission, she is aware the battle isn't over yet

writing the next five years is crucial. reoccurrences happen all the time. many of you have shared that very story with me. last year the actress spoke as she fought against the disease and worried about her future. >> living without a breast is manageable. it's the worry of your future and how your future is going to affect the people you love. >> reporter: and this morning, doherty is taking things in stride saying, i'm going to just breathe. #cancerslayer. and our senior medical correspondent, dr. jennifer ashton is here. i'm glad we're talking about this. very, very happy for shannen. she talked about being -- she's happy but overwhelmed. people don't know what happens after treatment. >> that's right. so first of all, in medicine, we tend to not use the word remission. we use ned meaning no evidence of disease and what that means there are no signs or symptoms of that cancer, unfortunately, it doesn't mean there is no microscopic cancer, but it begins a period of intense surveillance that's part of the cancer survivor's life, so what does that mean?

imaging tests, p.e.t. scans and c.a.t. scans and a cancer with a tumor marker and physical exam and it is stressful. you want to be optimistic but it's stressful. >> physically, you know, she's been through a lot. >> yeah, and it's important to remember the physical consequences and broaden it to any type of cancer, not just breast cancer here. it really depends first and foremost on the site of that original cancer, where it originated. then you go into what type of treatment the patient receives so was it surgery? was it chemotherapy and any prior or pre-existing medical conditions will have an impact on what they go through after cancer physically. >> i was so thankful my doctors warned me after treatment i went through that psychologically that i'd go through a period of depression and i'm like, no, i'm not. yes, i did. >> it can happen to anyone and that's a big push in the cancer world, again, any type of cancer, the survivorship guidelines and actually in december 2015 the american cancer society put out its first survivorship guidelines

specifically for breast cancer and they exist for other types of cancer. it's about going head to toe like subsequent heart health, bone issues and sexual health. for men or women, mental health, depression, the psychological state so important and nutrition, it's about treating the whole person, not just a body part. >> survivor, can we say thriver? >> yes, we can. >> thanks so much. coming up live in chicago, major "deals & steals," everything 50% off. come on back. "excaliber" was one of my favorites and a time when i already identified that i loved film but i started to dream as kids do that maybe that would be what i could do as a career and asked my mum, like, how do they go about hiring actors? you know, so these guys riding horses and sword fighting and i said do they hire an actor that knows how to do those things and my mum said i'm not really sure but i would imagine they hire someone with the aesthetic and the heart and essence of the character that they're looking for and then teaches them those skills and i said, whoa, at 6 years old i thought learning to ride horses and sword fights sounds like pretty much the greatest job in the world and cut to 30 years later it's my least favorite part of the job. so, that's okay, though. >> on the film, of course, he's this character that you've always wanted to play. i read somewhere that you have a thing for props. so, the big question is did you get excaliber? did you get the sword. >> you know, i didn't. i didn't. i tried to. >> you did?

were you literally like nothing to see here? >> yeah, nothing to worry about here. you know, it's funny. on the film of this size, there's a lot of absurd jobs get created and one of the jobs was the sword wrangler. there was a man whose job it was to look after the sword. he's this lovely old english fella. >> didn't have the heart? >> no, i did. i absolutely did have the heart. or lack of heart and so one day i was just casually sort of walking out and he said, charlie, he said, where are you taking the sword? i said, home. naturally and he goes, you know what, i think you're so great. i would actually let you take this sword, but guy had wanted to do something really nice for you and so he's asked for a brand-new sword to be made for you and he's going to present it to you and i said, oh, that is aso nice and rap came and no sword arrived. i got bamboozled. >> guy just got called out. >> yeah, i know.

i think guy is here somewhere. if you see him, ask him -- >> where is your sword. >> where my sword is. is that the reveal today? are you going to bring the sword out for me? >> if so we'll all be -- >> yeah, really. >> come on, right? we were friends and so -- oh, there's guy right there. you chicken monkey. [ cheers and applause ] don't worry, guy. i got my own sword now. don't need -- >> nothing to see here, charlie, nothing to see here. >> well now it's going to be awkward telling this story in front of you so i said, i said, you know, i think, you know, i heard guy was doing "king arthur" and i promptly threw my name in the hat and guy threw it back out. you're a nice chap. i'm not really interested. i said, sorry, mate. that's unacceptable and jumped on a plane and showed up at his doorten and said let's have a cup of tea and at the end of that tea he liked me and i auditioned and got the job in the end. so it was a happy tale in the

end. >> so what was about him in the end about charlie can. >> you going to have to repeat? i'm a long way away. >> how did he convince you? >> it was enthusiasm. charlie would not take no for an answer. [ cheers and applause ] he wouldn't take no for an answer and eventually turned up on my door and i had to let him in. >> it's funny. i think the moment i was very, very skinny at the time and obviously playing this role requires a bit of a robust physicality and guy had questioned me about my ability to do this because he hadn't really seen any of my work and seeing other movies had been quite formidable so many types the idea of physicality came up and halfway through the audition i said, you know what, guys, these things are sometimes quite awkward. there is a lot of other actors also that awe are auditioning and saw them creeping about the hallways. >> we'll come back and see your
