making news in america this morning, president trump takes on some foreign challenges as he faces criticism for saying he'd be honored to meet north korea's leader. he is set to speak to russian president vladimir putin today. all that as crowds protest some policies in cities across the country. new details this morning about a terrifying stabbing spree at the university of texas. a student now in custody. another is dead. witnesses describing the chaotic scene. we have some new video of the race to save a driver after his car was crushed by a tractor trailer. we also have an update on his condition coming up. and jimmy kimmel gets personal and emotional overnight. >> it's a terrifying thing. you know, my wife is -- >> the story about his newborn that had his audience and kimmel

himself in tears. a good tuesday morning to you and we begin with president trump set to speak to russian president vladimir putin today. >> but he's criticized for what he said about another world leader. the north korean dictator kim jong-un and add to that some major developments overnight on his domestic agenda. abc's kenneth moton following it all from d.c. kenneth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and diane. house republicans appear to be optimistic about the timing of a vote on their new health care bill, the white house a little more cautious after the president sent mixed messages about what's really in the plan. this morning may day aftermath. demonstrators against president trump turned violent in portland, oregon. but most of the protests across the country peaceful. thousands speaking out against the president's immigration policies. >> trump, we're here to fight.

that's why we're here today. >> reporter: back in washington the fight is focused on health care. the new gop plan to replace obamacare allows states to opt out of coverage for pre-existing conditions. >> pre-existing conditions are in the bill, and i mandated it. i said has to be. >> reporter: but the president said the key component was guaranteed. the white house not really clearing up the claim as house republicans inch closer to a vote. >> i would assume that today we're closer than we were a week ago, but we're not there yet. >> reporter: press secretary sean spicer defended the president's white house invite to accused human rights violator filipino president rodrigo duterte to help with the north korean threat. trump also told bloomberg under the right circumstances he would be honored to meet with korean dictator kim jong-un. >> how can that be an honor? >> he's still the head of state so it is sort of -- there is a diplomatic piece. >> reporter: the attention on president trump's foreign policy will continue today when he

speaks by phone with russian president vladimir putin. potential issues on the agenda, syria and the fight against isis. diane and kendis. >> it'll be interesting to hear the readout from that phone call. kenneth, thank you there in washington. and the president says that he's considering breaking up the nation's biggest banks. mr. trump told bloomberg he might push for legislation that would essentially bring back a depression era law that prevented commercial investment banks from combining bank stocks dropped sharply on the news. but recovered, and the federal school lunch program is easing standards championed by former first lady michelle obama. agriculture secretary sonny perdue newly sworn in says the changes include a delay on the requirement to reduce the amount of sodium in school meals. and schools can also serve 1% milk instead of nonfat milk. perdue said meals can't be nutritious if kids aren't eating them. the house is holding a hearing today triggered by a united airlines passenger dragged off a flight.

united's ceo oscar munoz and other airline executives are set to testify about airline customer service. a hearing in the senate is scheduled for thursday. some lawmakers want to ban airlines from overbooking flights. police believe a student is behind a hunting knife attack at the university of texas that left another student dead. investigators say 21-year-old kendrex white stabbed at least four other students. one was killed. three others were seriously wounded. witnesses say the scene was complete chaos. >> everyone was yelling he's here. he's here and just running away. i had no idea what was happening, so i immediately ran into the bathroom. i just hid in a stall. >> immediately there was fear. everybody was scared. it was kind of a sense of shock that we didn't necessarily believe what was going on. >> police say white surrendered after officers confronted him at gunpoint. investigators still don't have a motive in that attack. the student who died is identified as harrison brown, a freshman from graham, texas. counselors will be at his former

high school today. in the meanwhile, north of there, dallas, two people are dead and a paramedic is critically wounded after a wild scene. police say the paramedic was shot while treating a gunshot victim. investigators believe the gunman then ran into a home, shot and killed somewhere there and then took his own life. and we are seeing some eerie new video from a mass shooting during a san diego pool party. in it you can see police swarming the scene. they then surround the gunman and kill him after an exchange of gunfire. police say that man was despondent after breaking up with his girlfriend and even called her during the rampage so that she could listen as he gunned down his victims. one of those victims, a woman, was killed. six others were injured but are expected to be okay. sexual assaults in the military are at a ten-year low but still more than half of victims say they were retaliated against after coming forward. overall pentagon estimates show the number of sex assaults dipped from just over 20,000 in

2014 to just under 15,000 in 2016. defense officials say they are encouraged by that decline but that the battle against sex assault in the military is far from over. the survey found 58% of active duty service members indicated experiencing some sort of professional retaliation or mistreatment after reporting an assault. that's roughly unchanged since 2012. a terror alert overnight for americans traveling to europe. the state department is warning citizens about the ongoing threat of attacks by isis and al qaeda through the summer months. after a series of strikes in the uk, france and sweden, americans are being told to be vigilant at large, high-profile events. to our south and the venezuelan president adding a new twist to his nation's political crisis calling for a new constitution. nicolas maduro wants what he calls a citizens assembly to draft the document. now, anti-government protesters say the move is an attempt to delay regional elections. the announcement came amid a

violent confrontation during a may day demonstration in the capital of caracas. now for a look at today's weather. >> we are getting a closer look this morning at the power and devastation of those storms that happened over the weekend that killed at least 17 people across 5 states. after nearly a foot of rain this lake in carterville, illinois, is just spilling over its sides after rising more than five feet. and at this hour that line of severe storms is moving northeast putting some 40 million people from georgia to new york in the storm zone. but by later today most of the east coast should actually start drying out. coming up on that show of emotion overnight from jimmy kimmel. plus, the new facebook craze about concerts you have attended and why experts say it is a hacker's dream come true. also, the annual so-called

tense moments in new orleans as protesters gathered once again at the jefferson davis monument. crowds were awaiting the removal of that monument. it's one of three confederate symbols slated to come down. some protesters threw glass bottles at the statue and some arrests were reported overnight. no specific date has been scheduled for the removal. an overseas mystery is deepening in belize after the bodies of a former marine from atlanta and his girlfriend were found. the couple had been missing for about a week. they were last seen at a bar in the popular tourist town of

corozal. autopsies have not yet been performed. police have not yet released any information on what they think may have happened to the couple. back here in the states a former south carolina police officer captured on video fatally shooting walter scott due back in court today. michael slager expected to plead guilty to federal charges in the 2015 shooting. that's a major reversal. slager had previously claimed he was just doing his job and scott was threatening his safety. in december his state trial on murder and manslaughter charges ended in a hung jury. and there's been another major shake-up within the executive ranks at fox news. just two weeks after the ouster of the network's star anchor bill o'reilly, fox news co-president bill shine has also been forced out the door in the wake of a growing sexual harassment and discrimination scandal. but at least one fox anchor, sean hannity, is standing up for shine warning his departure would be the end of fox news as we know it. there's a new warning about

responders worked frantically for about an hour and then you see that moment. finally managing to free the driver who is recovering this morning. now for a look at your morning road conditions, roads will be wet along the great lakes and florida as well as parts of the midwest, northern plains and pacific northwest. but should be dry just about everywhere else. >> not a bad day in the skies. weather-related airport delays possible in miami only. now to that raw emotion on display overnight from jimmy kimmel. the late night abc host describing last week's ordeal that he went through. it followed the birth of his son billy. >> a little over a week ago on friday, april 21st my wife molly gave birth to a boy. we call him billy. it was an easy delivery. six pushes, he was out and he appeared to be a normal, healthy baby until about three hours after he was born when a very attentive nurse at cedars-sinai

hospital, her name is nanoosh, was checking him out and heard a murmur in his heart but noticed he was a bit purple which is not common, so she asked me to come with her and now all of a sudden it felt serious and the room started to fill up. more doctors and nurses and equipment started coming in and they determined he wasn't getting enough oxygen into his blood but they did an x-ray and his lungs were fine which meant his heart wasn't. so now more doctors and nurses and equipment come in. and it's a terrifying thing. you know, my wife is back in the recovery room. she has no idea what's going on. and i'm standing in the middle of a lot of very worried looking people kind of like right now. they did an echocardiogram which is a sonogram of the heart and found that billy was born with a heart disease, something called tetralogy of fallot with pulmonary atresia. it's hard to explain.

basically the pulmonary valve was completely blocked and he has a hole in the wall between the left and right sides of his heart, and on monday morning, dr. starnes opened his chest and fixed one of the two defects in his heart. he went in there with a scalpel and did some kind of magic i couldn't even begin to explain and opened the valve and the operation was a success. it was the longest three hours of my life. it was a success. [ applause ] this poor kid, this is what he looked like on monday. but this is what he looked like yesterday. [ applause ] we brought him home. poor kid, not only did he get a bad heart but he got my face. >> luckily he got dad's smile as well. jimmy says billy faces two more procedures. the first should take place in the next three to six months but he is home now and jimmy says he is doing quite well. >> so nice of him to share that story with us. the government has an urgent warning about hoverboards after a fatal house fire.

consumers are being told to stop using and charging layz boards. hoverboards were linked to a house fire that killed two girls in pennsylvania in march. it's the first time the government has directly linked a hoverboard to a fatal fire. those hoverboards, by the way, were made in china. more than 3,000 units were imported to the u.s. now to a scary moment caught on camera at a hotel in georgia. police are searching for an armed robber who jumped onto the counter at this econolodge in macon, threatened the worker and then ran off with hotel cash. luckily no one was injured during the encounter. let's turn to sports now and the nba playoffs. the champs are warming up pretty nicely. lebron james pouring in 35 points last night as the cavaliers opened their second round series against the toronto raptors with a big win. >> ooh, excuse me. i got so excited about the houston rockets i almost jumped the gun here. they hit 22 three-pointers, completely demolished the spurs in the first game of the series. both of those series resume

alexis. looking good on the r roadso far this morning. it was a tough day yesterday. today we are starting off incident-free. that's g looks we need a couple more cash booths open on the left side of the bay bridge toll plaza. a quick check of our traffic maps, we're in the green almost all the way around. starting to see a backup form out of the central valley in the tracy area. that's in less than 10. closing arguments are expected today in the sierra lamar murder trial. >> the case will go to the jury without the defendant, antolin garcia torres, taking the stand. matt keller is live in san jose. matt? >> reporter: good morning, reggie and natasha. so many emotions today. here we are, closing arguments on may 2 after this trial began in january and a very emotional trial as the prosecution and defense get ready to make their final closing arguments today. there's been one expert witness after another during this trial.

the prosecution blames antolin garcia torrez for killing sierra lamar. the defense says without a body the case is circumstantial. the jury will then begin deliberations in this death penalty case. >> they get back in there they have to put the emotion aside and make decisions regardless of the emotion, regardless of the sympathy for sierra lamar's family and for mr. garcia-torres who is facing the rest of his life or the death sentence. >> reporter: sierra was 15 years old when she was last seen in market of 2012. antolin garcia-torres never took the witness stand. the trial is scheduled to resume at 8:30. matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you. san francisco police still looking for the shooter who gunned down a 15-year-old boy yesterday on sunset boulevard. abc 7 news reporter lillian kim has the details. >> reporter: this was the car

the 15-year-old was driving when he was shot on sunset boulevard. investigators marked each of the several bullet holes that hit the white pontiac. the 16-year-old passenger wasn't armed but the young man behind the wheel was pronounced dead at zuckerberg san francisco general hospital where family members gathered outside the emergency department. >> any time that a minor is killed or harmed from gun violence it's terrible. >> reporter: residents aren't used to seeing this level of gun violence in their neighborhood. saint ignatius college prep is four blocks away and the administrators put the school on lockout during the shooting, parents were alerted by e-mail. >> what was your reaction to that? >> concerned because i know what things can happen, it doesn't matter what neighborhood, it can happen anywhere. the motive is unclear. investigators hope witness account and possible security video in the area can help bring
