good thursday morning to you all. we begin with that effort to repeal and replace obamacare expected to clear a major hurdle on capitol hill today. >> yeah, house republicans are voting this afternoon on that revised health care bill. they now say they have enough support after adding an amendment on pre-existing conditions and direct intervention from the president. abc's kenneth moton is in washington where all the action is today. kenneth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and diane. this morning we are already hearing from angry democratic leaders. they are calling this gop health care plan a moral monstrosity that will have a negative impact on millions of americans. today, 216 votes, that's what it'll take for the house to pass the gop health care plan. >> let's be optimistic about life. >> reporter: house republicans ready to vote after days of face-to-face lobbying by president trump. >> mr. vice president, on health care do you have the votes? >> reporter: capitol hill meetings with the vice president to sway those against and undecided.

and a last-minute amendment by two republican congressmen to give states a billion dollars over five years to help cover pre-existing conditions. >> with this addition that we brought to the president and sold him on in over an hour meeting in here with him, there were both yeses on the bill. >> reporter: this morning, democrats on the attack. >> this is deadly. this is deadly. trumpcare means heart-stopping premium increases for americans. >> reporter: house republicans voting before the nonpartisan congressional budget office has a chance to weigh in. hundreds of leading patient and health groups are speaking out against the bill. the american cancer society calling the changes particularly egregious. the american medical association warning of second class health care coverage if people with pre-existing conditions are able to obtain coverage at all. >> there are so many variables that are unknown that to make an analysis of that level of precision, it seems almost impossible. >> reporter: the house vote could happen sometime this

afternoon here in washington on capitol hill. if the bill passes, it's on to the senate where it will face an even tougher fight, diane and kendis. >> all right. that's kenneth moton for us live from d.c. kenneth, thanks. and just as they are voting, president trump will be heading back to new york city for the first time since taking office. >> the president is expected in new york city this afternoon. he is set to meet with australia's prime minister before attending a world war ii commemoration. all the while a thousand members of new york city's police department will be protecting him. >> well, the trip also means protesters. demonstrators are preparing a less than warm reception. protests are planned in a number of locations including outside his home at trump tower. well, the fbi director jim comey is forcefully defending the way he handled the investigation into hillary clinton's e-mails. comey told congress that he would make the same decision if he had to do it again. he insisted that he didn't intend to harm the clinton campaign by announcing that her aides had been extremely careless and after re-opening

the e-mail inquiry just before the election, comey said he felt compelled to tell lawmakers. >> concealing in my view would be catastrophic, not just to the fbi but well beyond and, honestly, as between really bad and catastrophic, i said to my team, we've got to walk into the world of really bad. look, this was terrible. it makes me mildly nauseous to think that we might have had some impact on the election. i would make the same decision. >> well, comey was asked why he waited until after the election to reveal there was also an ongoing investigation into contacts between russia and the trump campaign. he said he believes he treated both investigations consistently under the same principles. president trump says he's confident he can broker peace in the middle east after meeting with palestinian leader mahmoud abbas. trump vowed to do what's necessary to reach a deal. however, the president did not commit the white house to a two-state solution. trump did push abbas to do more to stop violence against israelis. ultimately he said both sides can reach an agreement if they

try. >> it's something that i think is, frankly, maybe not as difficult as people have thought over the years, but we need two willing parties. we believe israel is willing. we believe you're willing, and if you both are willing, we're going to make a deal. said the him hopeful though they didn't talk about how to restart peace talks. he also said he's willing to meet with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. now to a couple of breaking stories overnight, an investigation now under way near dallas after two people were shot and killed inside a crowded bar. police say a gunman entered the sports bar last night and got into an argument with a worker there. and things escalated from there. >> there was some type of altercation or argument or something being said and witnesses reported that this man pulled out a gun and shot the employee and killed the employee. >> and at that point a customer who was armed with a licensed

concealed weapon confronted the gunman and shot him dead. investigators are now trying to figure out the gunman's motive. they are also looking into whether he knew that bar employee. and also breaking overnight, authorities in maryland have found an escaped prisoner hiding in a drainage tunnel. david watson was tracked down with a thermal imaging camera. he had been on the run since friday. watson escaped while being taken to a hospital. he's serving more than 100 years in delaware for attempted murder. more details on his capture will come later this morning. and it's time now for a look at the weather. more rain is expected to prolong devastating flood conditions across much of the central u.s. levees are weakening under the weight of all that rushing water and swollen rivers are spilling over and swamping entire neighborhoods. river traffic is also closed along a busy section of the mississippi near st. louis. you can see the radar shows the storm stretching from the

mississippi valley north toward the great lakes. forecasters say downpours will be heavy at times with up to 4 more inches falling in some spots. an emergency meeting at buckingham palace sparking plenty of concern overnight but the palace says the queen and prince philip are fine. the plaza announcing moments ago the nearly 96-year-old prince will retire from public appearances in august. in the past, the duke of edinburgh has suffered heart problems but kept up a busy schedule. no such plans for the 91-year-old queen to step away from her public duties. well, barack obama has unveiled the design of his future presidential library. >> the former president chose a location in chicago's historic jackson park. the center will include three buildings on a campus with amenities for families and visitors. >> the obamas showed off the plans at a nearby cultural center, the same venue where they got married some 25 years ago. a beautiful complex there. well, still ahead, a new

this morning we're learning more about one of the victims killed when a car barreled through an auto auction outside of boston. you see her there, leezandra aponte was one of three people killed in that crash. now, police say that jeep driven by an auction employee in his 70s suddenly accelerated.

the car struck several people before crashing through a wall. aponte, another woman and a man died. aponte was the mother of three and it was her first day on the job at that auction. >> we've lost our sister, a mother, a daughter. she leaves behind three kids. one just joined the army. he's graduating next week. >> the raw emotions are understandably on display. the driver was not seriously injured in the crash. investigators say they believe this was simply an accident. classes will not resume until monday at north lake college in suburban dallas after a gunman killed a student then turned the gun on himself. police ordered a campuswide lockdown while they looked for the shooter as frightened students barricaded themselves behind closed doors. investigators say the gunman was a former student. it's not yet clear if he knew the victim. google says it has already taken steps to protect users from a phishing scam that is

designed to steal personal information. it says if you receive an e-mail from someone asking you to open a google docs and you don't know the sender, then simply don't open the e-mail. in addition to the steps it has already taken, google is also asking anyone who receives possible phishing e-mails to report them. and facebook is hiring 3,000 new workers to help monitor content and remove violent videos. ceo mark zuckerberg says they will review the millions of reports facebook receives about questionable posts every week. facebook has been criticized for not moving fast enough to stop the spread of violent images including those seen on facebook live. when we come back, a hero emerges in this week's deadly stabbing spree at the university of texas. what we're learning about the woman who was running toward the danger. and the new connection between too much screen time for kids and what it could do to their development.

hawaii to los angeles. the airline was hoping to use that seat for another passenger on the overbooked flight. but when the schears refused they say the staff asked the entire family to get off and even threatened them with jail time. >> you either give up the seat, or you're going to jail, your wife is going to jail and they'll take your kids from you. >> as a mother and you have a 1-year-old and a 2-year-old, it doesn't matter whether, you know, it's true or false, it put fear in me. >> delta has not commented on the incident. the airline recently changed its policy to offer up to $10,000 for seats on overbooked flights. but there's no word if any of the passengers in this case were given that offer. now this all comes as the airline industry is already facing bad publicity for a video that showed a doctor being dragged off an overbooked united flight. united has since agreed to make changes to its overbooking policy. two people now detained in belize in connection with the murders of a u.s. marine veteran and his canadian girlfriend.

drew devoursney and francesca matus were missing nearly a week before their bodies were found this past monday. police say they are investigating threats against matus. a number of motives are being looked into right now including a possible real estate deal that may have gone wrong. a doctor who was in the right place at the right time is being called a hero for saving a student during a deadly stabbing rampage this week at the university of texas. dr. leona di amore was visiting her daughter on campus when she heard screams and saw people running. she's a former navy medic who now works as a chiropractor and instead of following the crowd, she ran toward the danger and immediately started treating a badly injured student. >> i did run, and when you're military trained and you're a first responder, and things are going down, that means they need help. i was meant to be there for him that day. there's no doubt in my mind. >> now, one student was killed in that incident. the young man di amore helped and two others did survive the attack. she believes he would have died
