men had deliberated, as you mentioned, a half day thursday, half day friday and all day yesterday, meaning they had no difficulty in deciding whether antolin garcia torres is guilty or not. the public gathered in the courtroom gasped as the clerk read the verdicts. guilty of the first degree murder of sierra lamar, then three more guilty verdicts for kidnapping of women in grocery store parking lots in morgan hill three years before sierra lamar disappeared. it was the outcome the parents said they wanted. they emerged from the courthouse willing to share their emotions after the 13-week trial. >> we're grateful to the jurors coming up with the right decision. and it gives us paegs as a family knowing that this is not going to happen to another child, and that they can't get away with something like this. >> justice is served here for us today. justice for sierra. so, that gives us some form of

relief. >> reporter: joining them sierra's older sister danielle with tears in her eyes. >> obviously not going to see sierra back, so it's not closure but it is a good first step. and the jury did the right thing. >> reporter: antolin garcia torres was convicted of kidnap and murder even though the body wasn't found. it was on dna evidence. >> in 13 weeks of testimony it's difficult to say what is most compelling. it's the whole package. >> reporter: the jury will convene next week to start the penalty phase. garcia torres could face life in prison without the possibility of parole, or the death penalty. in san jose, david louie, abc7 news. >> today's verdict came as a huge relief to the hundreds of volunteers who searched for the teenager. abc7 news reporter jeannine de la vega join us from morgan hill where sierra attended high school before disappearing.

jeannine? >> reporter: well, nearly everybody here knows the name sierra lamar even though they don't personally know her or knew of her family. in a sense, she really became everyone's daughter and that's why today's verdict really hit home. as people filed out of the main courthouse in san jose, there were many hugs. this man in particular, doug tul he is, was overcome with emotion after he heard antolin garcia torres was found guilty of murdering morgan hill teen sierra lamar. >> we were all holding our hands inside there. god answered the questions and answered our wishes and our prayers. >> reporter: he and many other volunteers spent countless weekends searching for sierra's remains in the last five years. many didn't know the lamar fraem but felt they needed to do something. more than 1100 searches were conducted. to have a guilty verdict? >> it was a combination of thrill and relief. >> just hearing the stories from

day one and feeling, being a dad myself and having a daughter and all of those emotions come out in you and you just hope that the jury comes to the right conclusion which i believe they did. >> reporter: sierra's disappearance shook morgan hill. her photograph was plastered all over the city. while those are gone, no one here has forgotten. >> i'm glad they brought him to justice. i'm glad they found him. i was worried they weren't going to and that the family wouldn't have any closure. >> reporter: volunteers say they won't stop searching. they plan on using the information they learned from the trial to go back out and look for sierra's remains. in morgan hill, jeannine de la vega, abc7 news. >> take a look at a nearly five year time line. sierra lamar disappeared on her way to a morgan hill bus stop on march 16 of 2012. her phone was found the next day a few blocks away. may 21st, 2012, sheriff's deputies arrested garcia torres. fast forward nearly two years to february 2014 he pleaded not

guilty to murdering sierra lamar. on january 30 of this year, the trial finally got underway, closing arguments wrapped up last week and it took the jury only two days to reach today's guilty verdict. at same jury that convicted garcia torres will decide whether he should be sentenced to death or given life in parole. they'll now have to regroup. >> this is especially important for the defense because they have been claiming throughout the whole time that since there's no evidence that a murder had been committed at all, because we don't have the body, the person can't be found guilty. now the person is a convicted murderer, they have to change tactics and focus more on the person because now the jury is faced with the choice between death and life without parole. >> jurors will begin hearing evidence in the penalty phase of the trial a week from today. we sent out a post alert on the abc7 news app. download the app to get the latest news including the sentencing which is expected to happen next week. >> now to our breaking news in

the big story nationally, embattled fbi director james comey has been fired. in a statement president trump said it will mark a new beginning for the fbi. abc7 news reporter lan a zach has the latest on this breaking story. >> reporter: it is a stunning turn of events here in washington, d.c. that led to the late night firing of fbi secretary or fbi director james comey. he has been terminated and removed according to a white house statement that was just released. they say, quote, the fbi is one of our nation's most cherished and respected institutions and today will mark a new beginning for our crown jewel of law enforcement, according to president trump, also according to the statement, we understand that the president was acting on the recommendation of his attorney general jeff sessions. you know, the fbi director has been plagued with controversy, both with his most recent controversy having to explain today why he overstated grossly

the amount of e-mails forwarded by huma the former secretary of state clinton. releasing a statement to try to clarify that, but falling short of an apology. and this also follows after his testimony recently in front of congress in which he said that he felt nauseated at the thought that he may have affected the election. remember, it was just general et he made it clear, key members of congress, that he was reopening the investigation into hillary clinton, and those private e-mails that she held. this also followed after another controversy by james comey when he dismissed the charges against hillary clinton for that private e-mail server and the allegations that she may have acted improperly with confidential and secret information. he dismissed all charges, but in so doing, if she is such a

damning condemnation of the former secretary of state, that critics were left baffled, how he could say that he was not pursuing any charges and that no reasonable person would bring charges according to him, after saying such forceful language about the former secretary of state. so, we are still going through all of this new information, but again, the white house has just confirmed that they have asked for the resignation and have fired the fbi director james comey. i'm abc7's lan a zach reporting live from washington. >> all right, lana, thank you. comey's deputy is now the acting director and interim director is expected to be named in the next few days. >> police in the east bay are on the look out for two brazen thieves who robbed the costco store last night and made off with jewelry. >> one suspect was caught thanks to quick thinking employees. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard live in danville. cornell?

>> reporter: it's been more than a year since danville actually had a robbery. that's what makes last night's crime all the more shocking. employees here nabbed one crook and police are now checking if another dramatic heist could be related. nothing but cardboard now covers an empty jewelry case inside the danville costco store. the case smashed monday night by brazen robbers who made off with a loot. >> that's just insane. >> and i'm shocked that this store was robbed. i'm just appalled. >> reporter: danville police say three men wearing hoodies, one with a ski mask entered the store around closing time. >> one of them acted as a look out, and another two went to the counter that contains jewelry and broke open the counter with a hammer. >> reporter: two of the suspects got away, but one man was tackled by costco employees. police say a risky move. >> the point is that the costco employees detained somebody and were able to hold onto him until we got there. >> going out for the call of duty there, they should probably

paralyzed. >> lyanne melendez with live in berkeley with details. lyanne? >> reporter: well, we all know this is a rough sport, but it's not often that this happens. now let me read you a quick statement coming from the head coach, the legendary jack clark. taylor's challenges will be severe, long in duration, and difficult beyond measure. our team, he goes on to say, intends to be there with him every bit of the way. this picture was taken by robert taylor's family. the cal rugby player is in a santa clara hospital after he landed on his head while playing in a championship finals. the injury left him paralyzed. his family issued a statement. robert is currently working on stabilizing his condition so he can start rehabilitation. the injury paralyzed his lower body with limited motion in his arms. >> it's tough for all of us. it casts a shadow on the victory. it's not right.

>> reporter: nathan becker, also a rugby player, is his house mate. the injury occurred just three minutes into the match. taylor, a sophomore at cal, had surgery that evening which doctors hope will give him a greater chance of regaining movement. because he will need a lot of rehabilitation, a go fund me page has been set up to cover his future medical bills. the goal was set at $1 million. becker says his teammate's spirits are good. >> great man of god, prays every night, prays before every meal, and goes to church on sunday. great heart, nice he fest manua meet. >> reporter: prayers begin on campus sunday at 8:00 p.m.. the entire cal community is welcomed. at u.c. berkeley, lyanne melendez, abc7 news. >> bill for bicyclists to roll through stop signs is off the table till next year. the idaho stop faced heavy opposition in its first committee hearing yesterday.

the bill's authors including self assemblyman fill teng said they'll keep working on this. it is safer for cyclists to treat stop signs as yield signs when there is no oncoming traffic. law enforcement and automobile organizations oppose the bill. >> happening tonight, the advisory committee for elementary school in alameda will present a report to the school board about how the building can be fixed. last week the school district said unstable soil under the school puts it at risk of collapsing during an earthquake. the committee says more testing is needed before the school is closed. the meeting will be held at 6:30 tonight at alameda city hall. >> how young is too young to be a teacher? that's the question facing the san francisco unified school district. they're grappling with it after a teenager applied for a job. >> abc7 news anchor kristen sze is here with the story of an unusual kid with an unusual goal. kristen. >> yes, alma and larry, meet sage ryan. he's a u.c. berkeley glad who wants to be ape substitute

teacher for san francisco unified. he met all the district's requirements. after initially offering the job in this e-mail, the district rescinded its offer. >> they told me on the phone, they told me that it was because i was 17, and that they were uncomfortable with that and then wrik of course they denied that was the reason. >> sage was home schooled by his mother who is a teacher for s.f. unified. he face timed us today from los angeles where he is pursuing an acting career. he says being a substitute teacher pays well, offers flexibility, and there is no minimum age requirement. sage says it's crushing for him to lose the job now after spending months waiting for s.f. unified to process his application and sponsor his state credentials. >> you know, i wasn't like hiding it or anything. i was giving my i.d. to people, making copies of my i.d., signing things, putting down my birth date. >> san francisco unified tells abc7 news they cannot do a thorough criminal background check on a minor and maturity may be an issue. but the young man with two

a pretty wide range, our usual summer spread coming in spring. here's what's coming our way this evening. forecast animation 5rk this afternoon, notice the fog from the coast surges across the bay. by 5:00 tomorrow morning at the start of the morning commute we'll see widespread fog not only at the coast, but locally inland and across the bay. that means reduced visibility for commuters. bear that in mind. you may want to give yourselves extra time if you're a morning commuter. overnight lows in those morning hours will drop into the low 50s in many locations, low 50s and upper 40s in some of the cooler spots inland. that takes us to tomorrow afternoon. under bright, mostly sunny skies tomorrow, much cooler weather than we had today. highs will range from mid to upper 50s at the coast to mid 60s a right around the bay and upper 60s in most of the inland locations, although one or two spots might hit 70 degrees. midnight tomorrow night or 12:00 a.m. thursday, this is the approaching system that may bring us some sprinkles.

notice they'll start pushing down into northern california early thursday and into the afternoon we'll see it breaking up. but a sprinkle or two could hit the bay area if it maintains structure and energy. we'll see what happens there. meanwhile our animation for rainfall totals suggests we'll see only a couple of inch of rain. thursday will be the day that brings us the cloudy est skies. it will only be partly cloudy. breezy and cool. windy pattern friday and saturday with winds gusting over 40 miles per hour. mothers day looks nice and sunny. cooler than average, certainly pleasant. a chance of showers on monday and tuesday of next week. things are changing and not looking very spring like for a while. >> it's mild. as long as mother's day is fine. >> we don't have any storms coming. >> that's good. thanks, spencer. >> "american idol" is back, but there is something a little different about it this time around. we'll tell you what's changing.

the jury found torres guilty of the kidnapping of three other women in 2009. torres could face the death penalty when sentencing starts next week. abc7 news reporter david louie tweeted reaction from lamar's family. they told him the verdict gives them some relief. however nothing can take away their pain. world news tonight tweeted the president has fired fbi director james comey. a statement from the white house did not give the reason for termination. it comes hours after the the the gave erroneous testimony. there is a search about the new director who will over see the white house's political and financial ties to russia. a backlash over president trump's health care bill continues to grow with protests across the country, and this one greeted house speaker paul ryan in new york today. some republicans have decided not to attend town hall meetings with their own constituents and now the democrats are stepping

push back from the senate? >> reporter: today the administration sent mike pence to capitol hill to talk to republican leaders hoping they can find a way forward for this health care bill. so, still some optimism in the administration. larry? >> ariel, thank you. >> south korea's next president will be a liberal who favors a more open policy toward north korea. moon declared victory tonight after results showed him leading by a substantial margin over conservative opponent. the 54-year-old will replace the ousted president. moon's win ends a decade of conservative rule in south korea. he is promoted engagement with north korea as well as removal of the missile system installed by the u.s. last month. >> ted cummins was arrested in northern california last month after a nationwide manhunt to find him along with 15-year-old elizabeth thomas. abc7 news reporter danya back us has new details.

>> reporter: 50 year old ted cummins arrived to a courthouse in nashville, tennessee. he is charged with taking 15-year-old elizabeth thomas across state lines for the purpose of criminal sexual intercourse. >> he will face mandatory ten years, possibly quite longer. >> reporter: footage just before the teenager went missing leaving her home to meet up with cummins. law enforcement said he took the teen through nine states before being captured in this remote california cabin. while on the run, prosecutors say he swapped license plate's disabled his car's gps, changed the appearance of his suv, and made cash purchases. court documents showed his original plan was to take the victim south of the border to mexico and beyond. the 15-year-old's father describing to abc news her emotional road to recovery. >> sometimes she'll be happy and laughing and back to the same old girl.

and then she'll be sometimes just in a fetal position crying. it's been a roller coaster for her. >> reporter: the father says cummins brain washed his daughter. cummins attorney says she went with him willingly. abc7 news, los angeles. >> former new england patriots aaron hernandez is no longer a convicted fel convicted murderer. he died before his appeal could be heard. the judge called the legal findings she was compelled to follow. hernandez hanged himself after he was found not guilty in a separate murder trial. >> a group of bystanders are called heroes. surveillance showing a mini van hitting 9 and 10-year-old sisters as they crossed a street in philadelphia. a neighborhood on sunday, one of the girls was able to get up and walk away, but the other one was pinned beneath the left rear tire. look at all these folks as they
