quickly. >> damage to bmw estimated at $9,000. she said bmw offered her $2500 towards purchase of bmw but declined the offer. iconic group of homes in haight-ashbury was the scene of another fire 15 months earlier. 2007 bmw suv, firefighters say the flames started on the hood, went to the front of the house and jumped to the house next door. heat so intense, engine dropped to the surface of the driveway, leapt to home next door. mother escaped with children. both families declined to talk on camera. total damage was

noi $90,000. more than -- recalled in 2012 because motor on the engine cooling fan could overheat, possibly causing a fire. abc7 unable to determine if it included the x3 in this fire. according to investigators, this fire and one that destroyed darla's car started in engine compartments. battery in darla's had been replaced prior to the fire. told investigators that a problem was causing the battery to discharge. arson not suspected, electrical failure not ruled out. our team from abc news found dozens of other parked car fires in new and older cars. some of the cars were under recall for noncrash fire related issues but most were not.

age of the car, issues with maintenance and where the cars were serviced make determining exact cause of the fires difficult. sean king safety expert says the fact that the cars are never really turned off could be an issue. >> when a car is off and catches fire, obviously a problem. mostly from electrical system. lot of the power to these electronic systems will remain on in the vehicle even when it's off. >> auto maker said we have investigated and in some cases suspected the vehicles identified by abc news, span in age 1 to 15 years. haven't seen pattern related to quality or component failure. vehicle fires can result from wide variety of external issues unrelated to product defect. poor maintenance, after market changes or rat's nests.
