a horse a horse had to be airlifted after it fell in a 300-foot ravine in los angeles count aco. helping the 1,200-pound horse was difficult. it had to be hoisted by helicopter. neither the horse rider were injured. a different animal problem in south africa. that is a giant python making itself at home on a golf course.

nationwide outage lasting about three hours. no word on what triggered that outage but blocked customers from making online and mobile payments. those are just some of our top stories on this friday, may 12th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning. happy friday. we begin this half hour with a growing backlash against president trump over his decision to fire fbi director james comey. >> reports that the president was planning to pay a visit to fbi headquarters and the white house now says that is not expected to happen today. meanwhile, the president is giving his explanation of why comey was fired and it sounds a bit different from what we heard from the white house. abc jonathan karl has more. >> reporter: contradicting white house officials from the vice president on down, president trump said that he decided on his own to fire james comey. >> he's a show boat, he's a grandstander. the fbi has been in turmoil. >> reporter: the president said he decided to fire comey well before the deputy attorney

general weighed in. >> he made a recommendation, but regardless of recommendation, i was going to fire comey knowing there was no good time to do it. and, in fac, when i decided to just do it i said to myself, i said, you know, this russia thing with trump and russia is a made up story. >> reporter: in his letter firing comey, the president claimed the fbi director had told him he was not under investigation three separate times. including during a dinner at the white house, a dinner he said he believes comey requested. >> he wanted to stay on as the fbi head and i said i'll consider, we'll see what happens. but we had a very nice dinner. >> reporter: the president said comey assured him he was not under investigation in two separate phone calls. >> i said, if it's possible, would you let me know am i under investigation. he said, you're not under investigation. i know that i'm not under investigation. me, personally. i'm not talking about campaigns

was shot and killed after stopping a vehicle. the suspect then barricaded himself inside a nearby house holding several people hostage for hours when he surrendered, police found the bodies of two women inside that home. their names haven't yet been released but the deputy kevin mainhart is being remembered for his 5-year in law enforcement. a standoff lasting more than a day and a half is over in trenton, new jersey. emily has details. >> reporter: almost 36 hours of pleading and finally came out. police say he decided on his own to surrender, ending the standoff that left an innocent bystander dead and three officers hurt. >> the suspect surrendered peacefully, exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident. >> reporter: the gunfire started early wednesday morning as police attempted to serve a warrant and he started shooting from inside the house.

officers hid behind cars, but a 56-year-old man standing in the driveway was shot and killed. three police officers also hurt, but released from the hospital. negotiations lasted all through the night using tear gas, knocking down doors at nearby homes, even sending in a robot with a cell phone and attempt to persuade reece into surrendered. he was not hurt in the surrender. he is a sex offender and the warrant police were trying to serve was related to his criminal history. >> we thank you. rescue workers came to the aid of a driver near st. paul, minnesota, who had a medical issue and drove off a highway into a small pond. the elderly man was helped out of his car and, according to police, is doing okay this morning. and now to a warning being issued about swimmers in the ocean and a video to go along with it. paddleboarders along the southern california coast were literally swimming with the sharks. they were surrounded by more

recent damage to one of the planes that serves as air force one could have caused a fire. that's the finding of an air force report on the botched cleaning by boeing mechanics. the report says three mechanics contaminated the plane's oxygen system last month during a $4 million in damage. the plane has not yet returned to service. an investigation is under way into a growing number of bmws suddenly catching on fire while parked and turned off for hours. >> abc's chief investigative correspondent brian ross is on the case. >> reporter: the people who lived in this house outside washington, d.c., were lucky to escape alive. >> i think this was a five-alarm fire. >> reporter: it all started according to the fire department, when the family's bmw parked in the garage caught fire, even after being parked and turned off. >> there was black smoke, a snap, crackle, pop and, boom, a flame. >> reporter: in this just of dozens of such mysterious bmw

>> the cia and south korea are behind that alleged plan. called for president kim to be killed with a biochemical poison. the north has called the plot a declaration of war and will seek the extradition of anyone involved. meanwhile here at home severe storms caused damage in central oklahoma yesterday afternoon. a possible tornado touched down in a tulsa neighborhood and trees and power lines all damaged and winds as high as 75 miles per hour and large hail on top of that. heavy wind, rain and hail were reported in other parts of the region, including another possible tornado north of oklahoma city. only a few minor injuries reported. and these storm systems will sweep into the northeast this weekend making mother's day a wash out in some areas. the heaviest rain is expected along the coast. one to three inches of rain is what forecasters are predicting along with winds of up to 40 miles per hour. this is a special one. a college football coach finds a special mother's day gift for the mom of one of his players.
