sheriff's department. good evening, i'm dan ashley. >> i'm kristen sze. thanks for joining us. the deputy has been identified as 50-year-old sroeuy khin. he worked for alameda county for the past ten years. >> the crash happened along 580 along the altamont pass. he was driving home from the santa rita jail in dublin. that's where abc7 news reporter laura anthony is reporting live for us. >> reporter: he was one of the first hires ten years ago. a hard working employee who had just finished a long overtime shift here at the jail this morning. he got off work, got in his car, and headed home toward stockton. >> it's not fun seeing your employee draped with an american flag. >> reporter: twice in less than three months, alameda county sheriff greg aherne has had to announce the death of one of his own. in this case a man he hired ten years ago, deputy sroeuy khin. >> it's heart wrenching.

besides all of the events and incidents that our deputy sheriffs have to deal with at work, they have to deal with a tragic loss of one of their brothers. >> reporter: it happened as the morning sun was on the horizon as khin was on his way home eastbound on interstate 580 after a long overnight shift at the jail. >> the strek was stopped or driving slowly in the number 2 lane. at the same time, the driver of a white 2016 temsa touring bus was also driving eastbound 580 east of grant line. for reasons still under investigation, the front of the tour bus collided into the rear of the volkswagen beetle. >> reporter: the chp estimates the private charter bus full of tesla employees was traveling 65 miles per hour when it hit the beatle. the bus driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and he and his 51 passengers all escaped major injury. tesla released a statement, we are deeply saddened by reports that there was a fatality as a result of the accident.

we will lend any support that we can to the authorities who are investigating the incident. in late february, a 60-year-old michael foley was killed after he was accidentally struck by an inmate bus in the parking lot of the santa rita jail. the van carrying khin's body was given a police escort from the accident scene to the coroner's bureau in downtown oakland. the deputy who lived in the central valley leaves behind a wife and four children. in dublin, laura anthony, abc7 news. >> the lawyer for a man involved in a brawl outside a wedding in fremont claims his client was just defending himself. cell phone video shows about 70 people kicking, punching and stomping each other in the parking lot of the royal palace banquet hall early sunday morning. and singh was in court today to face battery charges for allegedly putting a man in a coma. singh's lawyer told our media at east bay times his client was also beaten badly and his life was also in danger. he claims singh was 100% within

the law to defend himself. the bride says the brawl was started by a drunk wedding crash error several crashers who were asked to leave. singh was an invited guest. >> in the east bay they say suspected serial arsonist struck again overnight. there were two more suspicious car fires in lafayette. that brings the total number of these arson fires to seven this week alone. they want tips from anyone who may have seen anything and they are asking people to check their home surveillance video for possible evidence. investigators are also looking at fires going back to the beginning of the year to see if any other cases may be connected to these. >> the chp says they are interviewing witnesses who have come forward after drive-by shooting on highway 101 in healdsburg. two men in a white honda were injured in yesterday's shooting that closed all the southbound lanes for about four hours. they say before the shooting, the men had stopped at a food truck on litton springs road

where words were exchanged with at least one other person. investigators are looking for a white pickup truck that may have been involved. >> the long search for a missing santa cruz county woman has ended. investigators announced today the remains found early last year are in fact those of this woman, jeannette herum. she was 29 and had just had a baby when she walked out of the hospital and disappeared in 2012. he sheriff's office is now looking for anyone who might have some information about herum's death which is considered suspicious. sadly her parents passed away before her remains were positively identified. >> work on the b.a.r.t. extension from fremont to san jose is ahead of schedule and with that comes an important warning to people who live, work or go to school near the tracks. those tracks are now energized and hazardous. abc7 news reporter david louie is live in san jose. david, they kickoff a safety campaign today. >> reporter: well, kristen, b.a.r.t. have the trains with an energized third rail. they are at the stage where they

want to do test runs so the power has been turned onto the third rail and the agency in charge of construction, vta wants everyone to be aware of that. >> do you mind if i give you a safety flyer? >> reporter: you can spot them easily because of their bright yellow safety vests. they're part of the community outreach team from vta, the valley transportation authority, which is in charge of the b.a.r.t. extension from south fremont to the station in san jose. that ten mile stretch of track is now hot. so, testing can be done. ground level electrified tracks are new in santa clara county. >> it is energized with a thousand volts of electricity so it's extremely dangerous. our project manager put it this way. you can't smell it, you can't see it, but if you touch it, it will be too late. >> reporter: vta team members are visiting 30,000 households in fremont, milpitas and san jose. they are leaving fliers at the door in multiple languages including spanish, vietnamese,

chinese, thagalog and hindi. >> we don't have fencing but we want to get the message out it is off limits. >> reporter: it is ahead of schedule and might be open by the end of the year. that is why testing is underway to make sure all systems are working. residents say they are glad to know the third rail is energized. >> oh, i think it's excellent. i mean, we have the right to know about it. so, it's really nice, yeah. >> reporter: vta also plans to do outreach to schools and businesses and to the homeless who might be the most vulnerable population as they seek shelter and might use the right-of-way for shortcuts. in san jose, david louie, abc7 news. >> chevron has agreed to pay $181,000 to settle air quality violations at its refinery in richmond. the settlement announced today covers violations as chevron richmond oil refinery in 2013 and 2014. all settlement money will be used to fund the bay area air quality management districts inspection and enforcement

activities. we are awaiting for statement from chevron. >> tornt some east bay lawmakers say impeachment should be on the table after president trump's actions this week. congresswoman barbara lee plans to host an open forum next sunday in oakland to discuss potential impeachment articles and the tweet today the president appeared to threaten james comey with taped conversations. this comes one day after mr. trump admitted russia played a role in his decision to fire comey. both congressman da san yea and congresswoman lee are urging their republican colleagues to act. >> this is a democracy and it's worth protecting and we cannot let one president take us over the brink. >> for the whole world, for democracies around the world, the united states congress has to stand up at this moment. >> another east bay congressman eric swalwell say two republicans signed onto his legislation calling for an independent commission on

russian interference. and tonight california senior senator wants the white house to confirm whether any tapes exist of conversations between the president and james comey. in a letter sent to the white house, legal counsel late this afternoon diane feinstein asks the white house to take immediate steps to ensure any recordings are preserved. she writes, to the stebt that no recordings exist, please confirm the fact in writing and explain the president's statements about possible recordings from earlier today. senator feinstein is giving the white house one week to respond. >> new developments about a livermore in and out that closed earlier this week after several customers became ill. in the last hour we had learned in-n-out may not have been at fall. the department of health now says some of the nine college softball players who showed symptoms of acute gastrointrite is were sick the week before they visited in-n-out. the company has done enhanced cleaning, sanitizing and employee health screening as a precaution. the restaurant reopened today. the state's drought

emergency may be over, but many municipalities throughout the bay area are still encouraging residents to limit their water use. cupertino is the latest city to keep drought era water use restrictions in place. abc7 news reporter chris nguyen has more from the south bay. >> reporter: many have called memorial park one of the more scenic spots in cupertino. this despite these manmade ponds that have been drained since 2014. city officials say they'll stay that way for at least another year. as california recovers from the drought, cupertino city councilmembers voted this month to keep some of its water use restrictions in place, a conscious decision to save money on maintenance of this local park while also setting an example for residents to follow. at san jose state university, this water feature is back just in time for tours on campus. students say it is still important to be aware of any water waste. >> it is really easy for water to run out especially since summer is coming so it's still better to be mindful about our

water supply since we just so easily got it back. >> reporter: the fountains at plaza de caesar chavez were down today for maintenance. visitors to downtown san jose say when the water is running, kids in the community just love it. >> so i'm super excited because i have younger siblings at home and i know they can enjoy this all summer long. >> reporter: the santa clara county valley water district say fountains used in its jurisdiction must use recirculated water. even though the drought is over they are asking the community to cut back by 20%. >> we never know when we're going to have a dry period come again so it's best to be prepared for it and make conservation a way of life. >> reporter: a five year drought ended by a very wet winter season. in the south bay, chris nguyen, abc7 news. >> all right, stay with us. feeling fierce and focused, the warriors practice hard as they look ahead to sunday. we are live at oracle tonight. >> cal exit take-two. california is he sessionists take another shot at the ballot. >> i'm abc7 news meteorologist

there might not be a bigger event in the bay area this weekend than the warriors tipping offer the western conference finals. >> the team practiced in oakland today gearing up for their opponent, the san antonio spurs. eric thomas is live at oracle tonight. eric. >> reporter: you know, some fans thought this was the inevitable western conference finals match up anyway. the warriors showed they're, well, their respect for gregg popovich by spurs practicing an extra long two hours. the first practice since san antonio knocked off the houston rockets to make it to the western conference finals. you know one thing about the spurs, they're going to be well

join the union. >> tonight we're learning wells fargo may have opened more than a million additional unauthorized bank accounts than they initially acknowledged. the new filing suggests a 1.4 million bank accounts were opened dating back to 2002. the scandal has cost the bank hundreds of millions of dollars in fines. there are concerns over dangerous working conditions at a controversial work site in a national park. dan and the eye team take a look at claims by a former worker he was put in harms way removing an old oyster farm, what he found and what the park service has to say about it. it is a story you'll see only here on abc7 news tonight at 11:00. >> tune in for that. there is this, the coast guard in alameda said the crew to talk off their law enforcement hat to save four sea turtles in the pacific oklahoma city. they were entangled in garbage and abandoned fishing gear last month. a crew member deployed an interceptor boat to free up the reptiles.

one petty officer says the mission highlights the big reason he joined the coast guard in the first place. he says one day you're chase being drug traffickers and the next you get to save the life of a beautiful animal. very nice. a united airlines flight from houston to ecuador was delayed after a scorpion was seen on board. united says passengers reported seeing it crawl out of a man's clothing as the plane was just about to take off. the flight crew made an announcement. the crew cleared the plane, paramedics checked out the man. luckily he was not stung. united put passengers on another plane but did not say if the scorpion was actually ever found. >> nasa is changing its tune when it comes to its next big rocket launch. the space agency now says a crew of two will not be aboard the made enflight of the space launch system, the monster rocket being developed to take people into deep space and onto mars. nasa says costs not safety, is the main reason behind the move. >> announcer: now your accuweather forecast with sandhya patel. >> hi there, everyone.

it duntsz really feel like may around here. temperatures lower than where they should be for this time of year. concord average high of 76 degrees, the weekend will feature upper 60s, below normal. look at the numbers just drop on tuesday. 64 degrees, but a big rise in temperatures as we head towards thursday and friday. it's going to be warmer than average with mid-'80s in our inland valley so definitely going to be changing it up. from our live doppler 7 perspective, you will notice really don't have any fog around. a few wispy clouds is about it. here's a look at the wind. it has been really gusting. sfo 39 miles an hour. notice the wind direction coming off the water, that westerly wind is what's making it so cool outside in many parts of the bay area. from our mount tam camera, take a look at this view. it is really nice sunny day, but wind is definitely a factor there. the trees are swaying in the wind. 58 in san francisco right now. oakland 64, along with san jose and here is a live picture from our emeryville camera. all you see is a beautiful blue

sky but definitely some white caps on the bay. mid 60s santa rosa, napa, livermore 64 degrees, golden gate bridge perspective, flag there blowing around in the wind. here is a look at the evening planner. it is going to be a cool and breezy one. if you're stepping out tonight, 50s, 60s. sun goes down and the temperatures will continue to fall through late night. so, a good idea to just grab the jacket or a coat if you are stepping outside. from our santa cruz camera perspective, it's a nice day, showing you what's ahead for the weekend. you'll be seeing a lot more blue sky in time for mother's day. sunny breezy and cool for the weekend. a few clouds on mothers day. a chance of rain early next week. here is a look at tomorrow morning. we'll hang onto the breeze. it is going to be clear. temperatures in the low 40s to the low 50s. so definitely starting out on the cool side. and then for the afternoon remaining below average. breezy as well, upper 50s to the upper 60s for your saturday afternoon. here is the hour by hour forecast for sunday. patches of clouds, 7:00 a.m., will give way to sunshine and then over the hills, i wouldn't

rule out a sprinkle or two. really it doesn't look like a major system or anything like that. it's mainly going to be east of the bay area, but can't rule out a sprinkle. so, i wouldn't change up your plans for mother's day. just know that the weather looks pleasant. cooler than average for mothers day forecast, patchy clouds 40s, 50s, sunshine by noontime. if you're taking mom out for lunch or a picnic, make sure she has that extra layer. 4:00 p.m. a couple clouds will be around, a cool evening, temperatures mid 50s to the mid 60s for most of you by 7:00 p.m. on the storm impact scale we have a light system, a 1 for tuesday. it will bring us a chance for light showers, less than a tenth of an inch where we do get any showers and it is going to be a windy cool one. download the accuweather app for all the changes happening. there will be big changes. look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. mid 50s to low 70s for mother's day weekend. increasing cloud cover monday. not much change in the temperature but a lot cooler tuesday. windier and a chance of showers,
