with the legendary chef joe humphry. what a treat for me, i love his food and i can't wait to sit and chat. one of the things i love the most about being here in limewood is the food, number one, and i love the views, the atmosphere, the floors. is it just me? i mean the... - yeah, they did an amazing job redoing this restaurant and really the whole hotel for that matter. the last two years, they've put a lot of money to refresh this hotel and fortunately i get to be a part of this restaurant which is, you can't beat the view. it's a gorgeous restaurant and we have a lot of fun. it's very vibrant. we've become really kind of a local meeting place where the majority of our clientele are locals. they're not hotel guests, they not the club members, it's people who live in the neighborhood. - so what should we try first then? - i think maybe a little risotto first.
4:31 pm
and so, like they say, the spirit of southern dirty rice but... - my goodness. - but west coast style. - i'm so excited that i don't know what to say. it's so delicious. - it's worth it. it's worth the effort. - wow. this is the asparagus salad. - asparagus salad, yeah. the asparagus with the salmon. the salmon lends some fattiness to that very lean, kinda grassy. so try a little mussel chowder. you might just have to go straight from the bowl. we do put a little bit of bacon. - that's great, okay. - to marry some of the smokiness of the chowder base itself. - oh my goodness. okay. i don't know how i'm supposed to be calm when i'm eating. and professional. (laughing) that's hella good! (applauding) well that makes my day, my week.
4:32 pm
this is only my second time being here at limewood but each of the times have been exceptional and i really hope people get a chance to take advantage because it's very, very, it's just wonderful. - thank you, i really appreciate that. - thank you. thank you, chef. now that we have dined and so wonderfully so, there are a lot of great things to do here at the hotel. from swimming and tennis to one of my favorites, the spa. how can a girl not be happy here? you know, the claremont is well known for its spa. from wraps to stone treatments, they have some of the best things you could imagine. you can even have a spa treatment and they have a child care set up for three hours while you're here. time to rest now. and it has been such an incredible day. excited about getting a little sleep here at the claremont and thank you to the team for taking such great care of us.
4:33 pm
4:34 pm
- [zahrah] hey jenny. - hi, how are you zahrah? nice to meet you. - nice to meet you too. - welcome to caymus. - we'll start with some conundrum sparkling wine. - thank you ma'am. - cheers. - well i can't wait to learn more about you and your family and try the wine. - yes definitely, this is just a starter wine. this is the 2014 conundrum sparkling. - conundrum sparkling. - okay, so this is a little starter. - cheers. - cheers. - how do you feel being a woman and a winemaker in an industry where there are a lot more female winemakers coming up, or who have always been around, but maybe the light is just finally getting shown on them. - i'm pretty new to it, so i have other woman winemakers
4:35 pm
to look up too. other women who have kind of paved the path, as far as napa women winemakers. my mom has kinda been an inspiration for that, you know it's her name. she was always just a go getter. and she's inspired me to take that attitude and run with it. - cheers to your mom. you know, for how she's inspired you. so will you show me around a little bit? - yeah, of course. - okay great. - so will you walk me through your family history a little bit? - yes, so this photo here, is really a special photo to our family both sides of our family, they have long standing history in napa valley, dating back to 1857. - so the lafayette state represents the first generation of wine making in napa valley. jenny and i, our generation represent the fifth generation.
4:36 pm
- wow. - of course we never met lafayette spicer, our great, great grandfather, but we do feel a connection there. it's amazing to think they were here, doing what they were doing in the late 1800's. i couldn't imagine the landscape back then. - yeah totally. - a lot of intake on the next generation and our kids will be the sixth. - the caymus history is rich. chuck and charlie wagner spent many years creating their wine and perfecting the caymus brand. will you guys show me around a little bit more? - yeah. - yeah. - okay great. - we've made it the cellar here at caymus, we've had this great tour already of your family history and now i can't wait to talk a little bit more about the wine. - the emmolo has two varieties, a sauvignon blanc and a merlot. i am responsible for making the emmolo wines. so this merlot is different i would say than most other napa or california merlot's.
4:37 pm
- great, cheers. (glasses clinking) all the hard work in the vineyard. ahh. and the sun, the sky parts, and angels come down. that's hella good. (laughing) so, just tell me where i can buy that one. that is ding, ding, ding, ding. - [charlie] the next wine is our caymus vineyards napa cabernet. this is the wine that you'll see more widely available than our reserve style wine, which we call special selection. - okay. - [charlie] and this wine represents all of napa valley. so we grow grapes all over napa valley. we have hillside vineyards, we have valley floor vineyards, we always like to talk about the blend of the two. cheers. - cheers. (glasses clinking) - okay.
4:38 pm
we're gonna go with hecka good. - [charlie] (laughing) hecka. - instead of hella. thank you for what you do. you know, and continuing your family's legacy. - well thank you. - thank you. - [charlie] thanks for visiting us. - aww thanks. - [all] cheers. - cheers to you guys, to your dad and your mom. - cheers. - cheers. - thanks you guys. - [voiceover} thank you so much to the canvas team for the history, the wine, and so much more. now, only about 10 minutes away up the silverado trail, is the gorgeous rutherford ranch winery. arriving here you feel like you are home as you walk by it's creek and catch the peaceful sounds of the river. and just as wonderful as the outside, is the great wine and thoughtful team to take care of you on the inside. - rutherford ranch winery feels like you're home away from home. you know, you drive up the driveway and then you're surrounded by beauty. and then you come inside and you have the tasting room, but then you have this great living room and
4:39 pm
- yeah, that's really the kind of feel that we're going for. wine, it's a lifestyle. unfortunately, we don't need wine to breathe or live but it does enhance your lifestyle. - i love the feeling you get while you're here at rutherford ranch and now let's head into the taste room where we can try some more wine. - welcome to our tasting room. we are known a lot for cabernet and bordeaux grapes but we are also really well known for chardonnay, it's a different white variety. so i'm going to start us off with a little bit of our reserve chardonnay. we offer some different tasting experiences and one of those tasting experiences that is quite popular with our guests is our wine and chocolate pairing. - can we buy that chocolate here? - yeah, you can get that chocolate here. it is made for us by the lovely folks at vintage sweet shop in downtown napa, so locally-made artisanal chocolate. you can definitely get it here though.
4:40 pm
so, the lemon chocolate, we use the milk chocolate with toffee, dark chocolate with cherry, dark chocolate with pretzels, so just a little bit different chocolate with each wine that we pair it with that kind of focus on different characteristics. - that chardonnary cheers! - cheers. - i love it. and it all comes back to really a great team, a great family, and great wine. - yeah, it all comes back to the people, so. - always back to people. cheers. - cheers. - i'm already in heaven cuz i love it here, their wine is incredible, and ah you got me with the chocolate! let's head to meet mike the winemaker for a barrel tasting in the cellar. mike i had your wine, i already had a chardonnay, - had the 2012 reserve cabernet and then we also had the reserve chardonnay as well. - so when does that wine come out? - so that wine that you tasted will be coming out in about a year from now. so we'll give about somewhere between twelve
4:41 pm
and sixteen months in barrels. speaking of which, here's a brand new chardonnay in a brand new barrel. - so good. really how do you do it? and what makes it different here do you think? or unique here at rutherford ranch? - well what's unique here is that we work with fruit from up and down the valley. so we get to work with chardonnay from carneros, from yountville, from rutherford, so everyone of those little areas is slightly different. we also pick at different sugar levels to make sure that we're achieving what we want. i mean if we want a more lean-style, we'll pick a little bit lower sugar, if we want a bigger style, if we're going to put more oak on it, we'll go a little higher sugar that will have a little more higher alcohol. - that is so good mike. - thank you. - no, thank you. with this rutherford ranch, perfect destination for me so,
4:42 pm
4:43 pm
to the davis winery, and today we are headed to the town of calistoga, and the truly beautiful davis estates winery. the moment you make the drive onto the property, you're taken by its natural jaw dropping beauty. you wanna live here instantly, and today i'm meeting with the davis family, the people behind it all. so we made it outside to the patio, here in front of the fire pit. and i mean, the views-- - something special. - are stellar. - something very special, which is one of the reasons
4:44 pm
that drew us in to begin with, is that the whole property is a big bowl up here in calistoga. and any place you go on the entire property, you've got this gorgeous view of the western valley. mayacamas mountains over there. - and then the windmill? please, tell us about the legendary windmill. - [mike] it pumps four gallons a minute. - [sandy] it's not just a prop. it really works. - how did you move from the computer side to the wine side? what was it that you were just like this it. - who was that, ya know, ah-ha moment? or that premonition? so 36 years ago we sat up here on the hill at sterling. - sterling. - when we were dating and our comment to each other was, "wouldn't this be a great thing to do "toward the end of our working life?" and we had found this one. it had been in another family for 108 years, three generations. we just fell in love with the property and saw a vision of how do we put a winery on this site.
4:45 pm
capture the essence, and at the same time, be able to share it with our guests. - the grounds here are spectacular, and we are headed inside the barn, a great place to sip and take it all in. this is where it all began. - the barn is a hundred years old now, and it's the character. it's the essence we wanted to carry throughout the property. - when i dream of a barn, this is the kind of barn that i dream of. (sandy laughs) i just want you to know. without even seeing it, this is what my hopes would be for a barn. - we have a ford 8n, that's a 1949. and we have a john deere br, which is a 1939. - well, and then the piano, too. so i could go over there and pretend like i'm playing 'cause it's gonna play on it's own. - you can. it's a 1909 wing and sons that we had restored, and it started its life, originally, in new york playing for silent movies. - so much to experience here at davis estates. a few steps away, their cellar, well,
4:46 pm
it's a journey where more and more gets revealed. and then you have that ah-ha moment in the vip room that makes you sit back and pause. it's so extraordinary! upstairs is their main tasting room with stellar views that show off their true beauty of the valley, and now, it's time to try a little bit more wine. - so the wines we're gonna try here are two of our more popular wines. the chardonnay. we source the fruit out of hudson vineyard in carneros. beautiful wine. oak-aged for about 18 months. no malolactics. try the chardonnay. - and we're having a great time. - we are. - and okay, so the zephyr. - the zephyr is our blend of 85% cabernet sauvignon, 10% cab franc, 3% merlot, 2% petit verdot.
4:47 pm
and it just has a beautiful soft-mouth feel to it. and zephyr is a cool, west wind. and so our iconic label is the windmill that we have out front. this just ties right in to it. so, cheers! (glasses clanking) - [all] cheers! - i wasn't sure if we were gonna be able to make that reach. that's nice. well, i had such a great time today. i'm just truly appreciative of all the hard work that you both put in and your team because people, like me, get to come here and enjoy it. - thank you for the kind words, and we look forward to entertaining you any time you'd like to come back. - thank you so much. - our pleasure! - ah, thank you! cheers! - cheers! - cheers to you guys! thank you davis estates. now we are headed back down the silverado trail to the town of napa, about a 35 minute drive.
4:48 pm
there is so much to do in napa. main street is as downtown and thoroughfare, filled with great restaurants, tasting bars, and delicious bakeries, like sweetie pies. there is so many places to stay and summer gets busy. so some of our favorite picks to stay are the napa river inn, which sits along the river and has incredible breakfast and a wonderful team. then there's the adorable arbor guest house. they have an incredible team, a homemade breakfast, and they'll take great care of you. also, on our list, and at the top of places to stay in napa, is the andaz. an urban, modern oasis with a down-to-earth wine country vibe, the andaz is hip, gorgeous, and one of the hottest hotels in the napa valley. time to check in to our hotel here downtown napa at the andaz. - what do you think it is about the andaz that makes it so special? i mean, you can feel it when you get here. - yeah. - but what do think it is that stands out the most? - i think the fun thing about the andaz is,
4:49 pm
as far as our collection of hotels at hyatt, is it allows such a freedom to express yourselves here, in the markets that we serve. so for napa, it's really the experience of the valley and the farmers, and bringing that culture into the hotel. that really brings people into the hotel to celebrate, versus the typical hotel, where you go, you stay, and then you go out to the beat. people do come, obviously, and wine taste, but the fun part is they all come back, and the hotel really comes alive at night. - yes. - and, we have a great bar, kind of turn the tables from drinking wine to, - [woman] (sighs contentedly) - especially cocktails. we have amazing bartenders here, and they put on some amazing cocktails, as you can see in front of you. - so what we are drinking? - so you have the instigator, - okay. - it's a starka vodka from ukiah, so california. we get as close in, as local as we can get. - (laughs) that's-- - so the spirits are a little harder in napa valley, but i have a gin breeze,
4:50 pm
which is a local gin as well. so, it's nice, right? - well, cheers, sir - cheers. - thank you for having me. - it's a nice refreshing cocktail after a long day of wine tasting. - (sighs contentedly) yeah, right? great way to, like, you know, you've had all your wine tasting, and then mix it up here. - [man] exactly. (sighs contentedly) one thing i love the most about the andaz is all the architecture, and you've got wood paneling, you've got local artists up on the walls, you've got the fireplace. it just feels like a home away from home. - so we design our hotels to feel like it's a residence, and we want you to walk in and have that home experience. so, just as you were inviting friends into your home, we believe that that's what andaz is all about, us inviting you, our guests, and our friends and family, into our home. - that's great. - and we want that to feel translated into the architecture and into the brand, so that it feels like an anti-hotel. you know, it feels like a home, right?
4:51 pm
- yeah, so what are we gonna try on the menu? - so we have our andaz burger, and this is a classic burger. it has smoked gouda cheese on it. you know, we always say, we always have the best burger, but, we do have the best burger in napa. - well, bring it on. - yeah, absolutely. - yeah, bring it on. okay, and this is one of the most popular plates that you guys have. - yeah, charcuterie and cheese, again, locally sourced meats and cheeses here in northern california, as well as some of the complements from the bakery. - okay. - so here we have one of our most popular lunch dishes, our beef salad, which is a beautiful tenderloin beef. you can see it's just a little rare, and tossed with-- - looks great. - [woman voiceover] loved the burger and the delicious bites here. - thank you so much. i mean, i just, we came here, you took care of us, you fed us. - all right. - thank you, sir. - [woman voiceover] the andaz is a gem here in napa. their gorgeous rooms are unique, classic,
4:52 pm
4:53 pm
including our stop at 1313 main, and only a few blocks away here in downtown napa is the wonderful restaurant 1313 main. and i'm headed to meet al, the owner and the man behind it all. al jabarin and i are here at lulu's kitchen on 1313 main, how are you? - i'm fine, welcome to lulu's and 1313 main. - thank you. - you're welcome. - one of the things i think that's so cool about being here as a destination is that lulu's kitchen, lulu's named after you mom. - my mom, correct, my late mom, yes. she was a terrific, terrific chef and she cooked for, i came from a large family and she was really
4:54 pm
instrumental in feeding a lot of us for a long, long, long time. and lulu is really an homage to her and her memory. so i hope i'll do her pride i guess. - oh, i'm sure you already have. - thank you. - [zarah] i love that 1313 main is here in downtown. and their food is not only incredible, but they also have an amazing wine list. thank you 1313 main, we had such an amazing time and now we're off to flavor! napa valley which has been going on all throughout the week and it started out only 5 minutes away here in napa. there's so many incredible wine and food experiences that you can have throughout the napa valley. so we're here at cia for flavor! napa valley. so what an incredible time we are having here at flavor! napa valley. i'm gonna get in the photo booth. this is cabernet and this is merlot,
4:55 pm
and i'm zahrah let's do it. - alright cabernet, let's squeeze zahrah. - so chef we're reunited. what are we having here? - we've got english pea and white chocolate macaroons. it's a flavor combination that i've grown to kind of love. cheers. - cheers sir. - i'm lovin' this. - oh my god. - there's a lot of chewing to do, but yeah. - thank you chef, so wonderful. - absolutely, hey the pleasure is mine. - that's the roasted brussels sprouts with balsamic reduction and toasted pistachios. - yes, it's so delicious. - thank you. day two of flavor napa valley takes us up to the culinary institute in st. helena. - so we have made it to try and taste some of the fabulous wines here for the event here at cia in st. helena. and i've stopped off at the barlow winery.
4:56 pm
thank you. - cheers. - cheers. - this is 85% cabernet, 15% merlot. - hold my hand. - is that good. - it's really nice. - chicken liver mousse on a crostini grilled with cauliflower (mumbles). - okay, i give you props for-- - thank you for trying. - that is actually really, really, really good. i found one of my favorite wineries. what's up man? - hey, how are you? - good how are you? - i am great, having a great time. - great. - so i'm pouring you a little bit of our 2013 abela vineyard red blend. this is predominantly malbec with a little bit of merlot and tee-fer-do blended in, enjoy. - yeah, thank you sir, cheers. what a great time we had here at flavor! napa valley. thank you for having us. and we will see you all soon!
