live where you live, this is abc 7 news. firefighters injured, and now the people who lived there could face felony charges for putting the firefighters at risk. thank you for joining us. >> firefighters say someone at the house was stealing electricity. as authorities consider charges, we hear from the person accused of putting so many in danger. we are there this morning. amy? >> reporter: hi, reggie. fire fighters got quite the surprise inside this burning home, and now they are trying to figure out who is to blame, the homeowner or the renters? when firefighters arrived at this house fire late last night, they immediately shut down the

power to safely fight the fire. >> it's a serious concern for firefighters because that's part of the process, once you disconnect power, you assume you're safe from the risk. >> reporter: they were not safe. two fire fighters suffered from electrical shock because they say the house was illegally wired and stole electricity from pgne. >> in the course of fighting the fire, two of the firefighters were shocked. one rather severely, didn't cause burns. the firefighters are okay, treated on scene, but it was an injury to the firefighters, and that is a crime. > reporter: four adults and four children living in this home, two suffered minor burns. they all got out alive along with their pit pull puppy. >> everyone's find. they are in a shelter right now. we see, you know, how things go. >> reporter: the homeowner stopped by to see the damage this morning. firefighters say they don't know if the renters or homeowner

illegally wired the home. they are investigating. the homeowner told us she had not heard about the firefighters getting shocked or the wiring issue. >> i don't know anything about that. >> okay. >> reporter: i have to go and find out about that. >> reporter: the two firefighters are okay. the fire department is considering filing felony charges. the fire started in the back of the home, where most of the damage is. it was in the kitchen. they do believe it started with the appliances and say the faulty wiring could be to blame. live in antioch, abc 7 news. >> thank you. santa cruz county brain surgeon in custody this morning accused of child molestation. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live with the developing story, matt? >> reporter: obviously, a very disturbing case here in santa cruz. a doctor facing child molestation charges, working

here for a long time and affiliations in two hospitals. this is a picture of dr. james kohut. his name and photo do not come up on the current website. he's listed as a neurosurgeon in santa cruz associated with several hospitals here in the area including the dominican and phe was booked on three charges including lewd and lascivious acts on a child under so and another under the age of 14. the district attorney explained to how serious the charges are. >> the three charges that are currently that he was booked in on as arrested on, he faces a potential life sentence. >> reporter: officials with the dominican hospital are aware of the allegations and have taken the appropriate steps, but could not comment more because it's a personnel matter. they are evalwaiting the case to se if more charges will be

filed. he could be here in the courthouse as early as tomorrow to be arraigned. reporting live in santa cruz, abc 7 news. matt, thank you. happening now, grief counselors help students and faculty cope with the death of a senior weeks from graduation. shane died in a car crash early yesterday morning in freemont near her home, she went to james logan high school. her mother was driving her home from the school's prom when another car plowed into them. the mom has major injuries but is expected to survive. the people in the other car have minor injuries. they are looking into alcohol or speeding in the crash. we know the identity of a construction worker who died after being tazed friday night by the police. 41-year-old branch after one officer used a taser to subdue him, he fell unconscious and died.

an attorney for the family says his loved ones are devastated. wroth's younger brother was paid a million dollars by sonoma county after being tazed 23 times arrested on drunk drive k charges. the east bay highway patrol is looking for whoever shot and wounded two people last night. it happened at 9:15 at west wes witten avenue. a truck exited, another vehicle pulled up alongside and fired shots. two of the three people in the truck got hit by bullets. their injuries are not life threatening, and chp doesn't know what led up to the shooting. new this nornmorning, talki about plans to install a new type of camera aimed at catching freeway shooters. the proposal calls replacing cameras on i-80 and highway 4 in the east bay. supporters say the technology will only play a small role in combatting the violence. >> cameras, by themselves, will

not address the issue. we see this as part of a larger plan of addressing violence in the region. >> microphones will actually move the cameras in the direction of the gunfire, and the cameras will be recording. >> the call for installing the cameras comes after 87 freeway shootings since 2015. eight people have died alone. san jose firefighters investigate the cause of an early morning blaze that gutted a home. the home near 24th and san antonio caught fire at 1:30 this morning. it took crews an hour to knock it down. witnesses tell abc 7 news the house almost collapsed. no one was hurt. the red cross is helping the family find a place to stay. right now, the oakland firefighters continue to put out hot spots at a construction fire in emeryville two days after starting. the crane was brought down and called a control fall.

that's after early saturday morning at the holiday development project on 39th street. this was the second fire at the development in less than a year. last july's blaze was ruled suspicious. the developer says there's 12 cameras outside the property that could help investigators. developing news now on the global cyber attack. chaos continues to spread today as companies return to work and boot up computers after the weekend. abc news reporter molly hunter explains the fallout from the scheme could be beyond the initial attack. >> reporter: 150 countries, hundreds of thousands of mach e machines attack, the biggest coordinated cyber attack ever, a malware virus. it may get worse. >> i would say we're not out of the woods. we have an additional concern that we've seen in the past to provide variance to the tool and continue to come after us. >> reporter: spreading rapidly in six continents, hackers

demanding money to unlock files. this message from the assailant, pay up in bit coins, $300 or file the disappear. in the u.k., hospitals attacked, sending off a health emergency, but thankfully, programmers in indiana and the u.k. discovered a kill switch. >> once the kill switch was activated, the malware does nothing. it would not carry out its infection. >> i was panicking looking through the code, and i realized we had stopped it. >> reporter: the hackers used the same tools developed by u.s. intelligence that were linked to the public back in april. microsoft already released a patch to fix the loophole in march, but those who did not update remain vulnerable. >> to those who have not patched or updated software, do so to get through this and to continue to get through it as the inevitable morphing invariance of this attack changes over the week. >> reporter: and security experts are on high alert warning more attacks could

developing news from maryland, 25 people were hurt after this charter bus overturned along a busy interstate. two of the injured were flown to nearby trauma centers. the crash happened this morning on interstate 95 between philadelphia and washington, d.c. at least one other car was involved in the accident, but it's unclear what caused the bus to overturn. investigators in new york city try to pin point the cause of a massive fire that destroyed a historic synagogue. it was built in lower manhattan in 1850, but closed in 2007 and has been abandon ever since. the synagogue once served as the house of worship for a russian orthodox jewish congregation. new this morning, san francisco's mayorments data from lyft and uber to tackle

congestion problems. they are proposing a data exchange between the city and ride sharing companies. they hope to develop new ways for cars to pick and drop people off, something the mayor says he hopes to end here, double parked drivers. mayor lee is also making a record investment for street repaving projects. he made the announcement this morning in the richmond district that the same section of san francisco where supervisor fewer calls on people to report potholes by this weekend. she said, if they do so, they will be filled next month. action declared june as fewer potholes month, a play on the last name, clever. saying public works has a dedicated team to repair potholes reported in the neighborhood. you can say there's a bit of a pothole in the reign of the new miss usa this morning, right? already stairing up controversy. miss usa 2017 is
