spring break and these two teens from milwaukee had their sights set on san francisco and the golden gate bridge. >> no, we are going to climb it. once we got there, yeah, we're going to climb it. >> reporter: i spent time with one of them, a senior in high school. they climbed the ropes and gained access to the cable that took them to the tower. they had no safety equipment and peter had a hand held camera. >> it's pretty safe to grab onto the side. i did it with one hand, my camera in the other hand. >> reporter: when they reached the top, you could hear peter describe what he sees. >> guys, we just made it to the top. this is incredible, it's so beautiful to be up here. >> reporter: while this is going on the golden gate bridge bridge authority admits they were completely unaware. none of the sensors or cameras was focused on that part of the bridge. here's their explanation. >> in many areas where you can hurt the bridge, we have sensors

that trigger an alarm that is audible. that camera pops up on the big screen. where these individuals were, what they were engaged in would not have harmed the bridge so it did not trigger alarm. >> reporter: they will now change the infrastructure and protocols. what has infuriated them the most is what the teens were doing on the walkway. >> i was doing the stunt my whole life. it wasn't too hard, you know. i think we were probably the first people to ever do flips up there. >> if either of these young men had slipped or fallen, there could have been serious harm to motorists below. >> reporter: and of course they were trespassing, but also climbing this bridge is a misdemeanor. they could face time in jail, up to a year, and also a $10,000 fine. now, the chp is the lead investigating agency in this case, but also homeland security is also involved. now, i asked peter, the young man that i interviewed, what his mom thought about this and he said, well, she wasn't too happy

about it and told me not to do it again. i'm live near the golden gate bridge, lyanne melendez, abc7 news. >> thank you, lyanne. i'm sure mom isn't too happy now that the world knows about it. scary moments for students at a preschool. in city hall, students huddled in the front area. they had to be evacuated after somebody phoned in a bomb threat this morning. san francisco police swept the building on fell street. they didn't find anything threatening, but school officials closed the campus the rest of the day. it was the target of another bomb threat last week. >> a richmond man just working in his own garage was robbed and then shot last night. it happened around 10:30 on the 3900 block of gately avenue. police say the man was shot once in his shoulder. they are now looking for two suspects who were wearing masks. the garage door was open when they approached and robbed him. after giving up the possessions he chased the gun men who turned

and fired. police say you should never do that. >> there is nothing they're going to take off you that's worth risking your life. >> richmond detectives believe it was a crime of opportunity and they have few leads. they are asking anyone who may have seen something or have a security camera in the area to please call them. >> pg&e has now been named as a defendant in a growing civil lawsuit related to that ghost ship fire. it killed 36 people in oakland last december. these new allegations accuse pg&e of negligence. abc7 news reporter laura anthony live at the ghost ship with the story. laura? >> reporter: larry, there have been several lawsuits filed by families of the victims in recent months. this new lawsuit seeks to combine those into one master lawsuit. there are new allegations and one new high profile defendant. >> we have filed against pacific gas & electric company, pg&e. >> reporter: pg&e is now the latest defendant in a lawsuit

filed by 18 families who lost loved ones in the ghost ship fire last december. >> for their negligence in supplying power to this building, for their failure to make it safe. >> reporter: pg&e is included in the new master lawsuit filed against the owner of the building as well as the ghost ship manager derek among others. pg&e crews installed smart meters inside the building and should have noticed the dangerous conditions, including a maze of extension cords that investigators believe caused the fire. in a written response, a pg&e spokesperson told abc7 news, we have reviewed our records and over the last ten plus years we have no reports of electric theft or any other anomalies from this location or the adjacent premises. we are fully cooperating with authorities as they investigate this tragic event. >> we are all beyond heartbroken. >> reporter: lisa lost her only child, 22-year-old cash in the fire. >> kids want to be able to

express themselves and play their music and learn and grow and we need those spaces. but people shouldn't have to die for them. >> reporter: the city of oakland and alameda county are not named in the lawsuit, but the plaintiffs attorneys plan to add them once the civil claims process runs its course. in oakland, laura anthony, abc7 news. >> and newly released video shows the operator of the ghost ship telling oakland police about the building more than two years before it burned. the video is from an officer's body cam. it was obtained by our media partners at the bay area news group. the officer was investigating a couch fire outside the building in 2014. derek almina appears to tell the officer he did not live there. >> and then this is where you work right here, right? >> yeah, i work here. >> a lawyer representing three families of the fire say the video shows how irresponsible and deceptive almina is. >> a van parked on the side of

railroad avenue on third street was torched overnight. no one was hurt, but the van was destroyed. this latest fire comes comes after an arrest this weekend after a string of car fires in the east bay. authorities haven't said if this latest fire is connected. >> five people have been hospitalized with a rare form of botch liz many. this happened after they ate food from the valley oak food and fuel gas station at walnut grove in sacramento county. health officials believe nacho cheese is the likely source of the outbreak. so, anybody who ate food there between april 23rd and may 5th, should contact their doctor immediately if they have any symptoms and those symptoms would include trouble breathing, blurry vision, slurred speech, perhaps droopy eyelids. there are only 161 confirmed cases of botulism. 114 were food borne. >> check out the light rain that came down in san francisco around noon today. enough for people to bring out

but the u2 concerts is on a wednesday evening with fans making their way here at the same time as the afternoon commute. just like any other event, santa clara police will have extra traffic patrol officers. but the pressure will be on public transit. vta light rail system and cal train are expected to carry 5 to 6,000 concert goers or 50% of the event. >> we are asking personnel to work more hours but we were don't usually have 5,000 people wait fogger our service at 10:00 in the evening. >> reporter: previous u2 concerts in oakland in 2011 and 2015 created traffic jams and caused some fans to arrive late or miss the show entirely. v tshlgs a and cal train will add trains to make sure fans get home after the concert although that wasn't the original plan according to santa clara county member theresa o'neal. >> at that time of night there's only like one train an hour and there's one car. so, it's not like a weekend concert or for 49er game where

the parents of a south carolina teenager who died last month are warning about the dangers of caffeine. autopsy results show 16-year-old davis died from heart problems at school after he drank a large mountain dew, a latte, and an energy drink during a two-hour period. his father hopes something good can come from his son's death. >> parents, please talk to your kids about the dangers of these energy drinks. and teenagers and students, please stop buyingthem. there's no reason to consume them. they can be very dangerous. >> doctors warn that many energy drinks could be tntain not only caffeine, but quarana which contains twice as much caffeine as a coffee bean. >> new reports linking implants

to cancer. jessica from abc7 mornings has the alarming story. >> more than 400,000 women get breast implants every year. now a widely shared story in "the new york times" is raising major health concerns. stacey boon was diagnosed with cancer in 2015, but she never suspected her breast implants were to blame. >> i thought i had the flu. i was having hot flashes, severe sweating. under my armpit there were not only one, but four nodules lymph nodes. >> reporter: she's not alone. the fda says in the last six years there have been 359 reports of possible breast implant associated cancer, including nine deaths. >> there may be something about the texture of the implant inducing some inflammation causing the cancer, but it's

currently not well understood why it happens. >> reporter: it's a very rare and potentially deadly form of cancer that affects cells in the immune system found around the breast implant. >> now, this type of cancer has been more associated with this type of textured or gummy bear implants versus the smooth kind. you also want to ask will it be under the muscle, most are, and if you're getting silicone will you need some kind of imaging follow-up. i had my implants done in the early '90s and i was never told that i needed to go back and have them checked every so many years. >> reporter: there is good news for stacy. after chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant she is now in remission and next month will be two years cancer free. the fda doesn't have exact guidelines for how often you should get your implants checked. they recommend talking to your doctor for an individualized monitoring plan. symptoms of alcl include redness, pain, some swelling, or

a west virginia man is using his new dashboard camera to show just how scary his ride home was the other day. check it out. cruising home during a rainstorm last friday, then all of a sudden he watched as the bank ahead of him just gave way sending mud and trees flying everywhere. fortunately for wiily, he was driving a large pickup truck. >> seven trees tangled up all together. one was acrossed windshield, one was across the top of the cab. i looked up and saw the cable lines and telephone lines were still intact. i went ahead and backed out just in case they did give way. >> a few more feet, he might have been in real trouble.

expense. they paid $45 million over the building's estimated value to close that deal. >> the voluntary recall of baby wipes contaminated with mold has been announced. >> 7 on your side's michael finney has the unique way one company is handling this. >> this is rather unique. i have reported on a lot of recalls over the years. i can't think of many instances when it a company has handled it in quite this way. christopher is ceo and co-founder est honest company. he released this video deeply apologizing for the mold that appeared on some of its baby wipes. >> a recent quality audit concluded there is the potential for the presence of mold in certain lots of our wipes, resulting in staining. the esthetics are unacceptable. and we believe any affected products are not likely to cause adverse health consequence. the mold that has been identified can be found on citrus plants like a common orange. >> he says the company has

identified new quality control measures it hopes will prevent the problem from ever being repeated. he says the company does not believe the mold will cause any health issues. fashion retailer has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. word of the bankruptcy came a month after the company announced on social media it would be closing some 400 stores. that includes 27 stores in california, including several around here in pittsburgh, capitola, vacaville, and tracy. with today's bankruptcy additional store closures are expected. rue 21 says it wants to focus on its online sales, but also says it's reached deals with lenders and is not short on cash. were you able to get your java fix this morning? i an unknown number of starbucks across the country had to shut down because their payment systems were knocked out. the mishap made it impossible for some stores to take cash or credit. the outage was blamed on a software update gone bad. customers in canada were also
