gibson. >> i'm diane macedo. here are top headlines we are following this morning on "world news now." the investigation into possible russian election meddling is now in the hand of a special prosecutor. former fbi director, robert mueller tapped for the job. we have full coverage and reaction from washington coming up. the president's speaking to coast guard graduates about navigating the choppy waters of the white house while addressing the academy's commencement, he told the gathering no politician in history has been treated worse than him. a 14-year-old faces a judge after being charged with starting sunday's huge fire at a new york city's synagogue. the flames gutted the historic building. investigators say the teen also had two accomplices. >> uh-oh, a first. for emergency crews in south florida. responding to a 911 call finding an iguana in a toilet.

>> at the department of justice -- breaking news. >> we are coming on the air with major news. >> the u.s. justice department. >> announced this evening special counsel appointed. >> reporter: big announcement. there is a new sheriff in town. a special counsel who will now take over the ongoing investigation into russian meddling in the november election. deputy attorney general rod rosenstein chose former fbi director robert mueller for the job. special counsel mueller will have extraordinary power. he can replace all agents on the case if he chooses. he has 60 days to put together a team of lawyers to work with him on the case. >> reporter: mueller's appointment is a blow to the white house. the president issued this statement. as i have stated many times. a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know. there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity. adding i look forward to this matter concluding quickly.

the president made no secret of his wish for the russia investigation to end. as trump told nbc's lester holt, it was on his mind when he decided to fire fbi director james comey. >> in fact, when i decided to just do it, i said to myself, i said you know, this russia thing with trump and russia is a made up story, an excuse by the democrats for having lost an election they should have won. >> reporter: robert mueller was the longest serving fbi director after j. edgar hoover. confirmed for the job, just a week before 9/11. going on to serve in a dozen years during the bush, obama administrations. he is james comey's immediate predecessor. the feeling clearly mutual. >> i must be out of my mind to be following bob mueller. >> reporter: special counsel mueller has swum in these waters before. he has the experience. and now the authority to take this where it need. david wright, abc news, new york.

allegations in the comey memo are true, it could be an impeachable offense. the speaker of the house is still backing the president, but not without hesitation. >> mr. speaker, do you still have full confidence in the president? >> i do. >> reporter: 118 days into the new administration, republicans had hoped to be plowing ahead with their agenda. health care, tax reform, deregulation. but instead, they're careening from crisis to crisis. as for calls for comey to testify. the house oversight committee is hoping the former fbi director will be here at a hearing next week. the senate intelligence committee is eager to hear from comey too. the top democrat on the committee telling me he is as confident as anything, comey will be testifying soon. but still no response yet from the former fbi director. mary bruce, abc news, capitol hill. >> after the week the president has had, you get the seps he would be happy to get out of town. the president begins his first

overseas trip. the eight-day journey will take him to places saudi arabia, israel, the vatican, italy, belgium. sunday address leaders of 50 muslim countries on the need to confront radical ideology. while in israel. abc news learned that the president will not announce the move of the u.s. embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem. as he promised during the campaign. turkish diplomats say groups connected to a terrorist organization triggered violent confrontation in washington, d.c. a dozen people were hurt including a police officer during tuesday's clash. that happened at the turkish ambassador's residence. two people were arrested. diplomats blame the incident on demonstrators supporting the kurdistan workers party. >> that scene playing out not far from the white house. breaking overnight. protests in tulsa oklahoma after a police office ear quitted in the fatal shooting of an unarmed man. protesters marched held hand and shouted hand up, don't shoot. officer betty shelby says she was afraid for her own life when

talk about this man. what is he like, what can we expect? >> he is tough as nails. this is, somebody who doesn't mess around. he goes right into a job. he asks hard questions. he is demanding. he is very impatient. he gets right done to business. expects agents and investigators that are working for him to provide him answers and results right away. what i expect from him in this investigation. the right person for the job at the right time. >> given mueller's past anything that gives you some insight into how he will conduct this investigation? do you think he will start from scratch. add more people. how does the process work. >> well, first of all he is going to set goals and objectives for the investigation based on the parameters provided to him by the deputy attorney general. and from there, he is, i think his overall objective is going

to be to, conduct the most comprehensive investigation and to conduct this investigation as fast as possible. he recognizes that all of america and the world is looking at the results of this investigation. they are going to expect answers one way or another what occurred with the russia issue and, of course, was there any kind of obstruction of justice or influencing by the president. so, he is going to want to be very thorough in what he's doing with this investigation. he is going to bring on investigators and analysts and any other analysts that are necessary to conduct this investigation. he will move forward as quickly as possible. i can expect daily briefings, maybe, maybe twice a day briefings that he is going to oversee to determine how the investigation is going. what are the results that they are seeing. >> and, steve, you know, a week ago we asked you the question, what was the mood inside of, all of the field offices as well as hoover building. you said it seemed fairly gutted. assume you have talked to, some of your former colleagues, what's the mood now?

>> well, they're still reeling from the firing of former director comey. right now they're of course waiting for selection of the new permanent director. they're in a transition period. which is always tough because you're trying to figure out who is going to be the leader. number of names kicked around and interviews are being done now. i think once the selection of the new director takes place. and, they're able to push forward with, with the new leadership. and now that you have -- former director, mueller in charge of this investigation. i think they're going to be able to continue on with the work that they do, combatting terrorism, counterintelligence issues cyber and all the criminal cases that they're working on on a daily basis. >> steve, this shifted a lot of public attention at least on to this investigation. any chance it is a distraction from the other investigations you mention? >> i don't think so. because, now that there is a special counsel who is going to

be handling the investigation, essentially, on its own. director mueller will have his own team. they're going to be operating separately from pretty much everybody on their own independent, objective, nonpartisan. i think everybody wants that. everybody in the fbi wants that kind of investigation. to be conducted. you can't help noticing the special counsel appointed and investigation that is going to be done. they are going to -- to continue on with their specific assignments. getting back to their casework. focusing on that. that's what they do on a daily base ills, what they love to do. protect america. >> all right. we're grateful for that. abc news contributor, steve gomes, thank you so much. we do expect to hear from the president during a joint press conference with the leader colombia. he did sort of address this week's controversies during the coast guard academies, commencement address. >> the president started off the

she shot him because she thought he was reaching for a gun. his family burst into tears with the announcement of the verdict overnight. his father said officer shelby got away with murder. more severe storms pounding the upper midwest this morning and then moving to the northeast. eastern wisconsin and illinois getting the worst of it. it is expected to taper by day break. more than two dozen tornadoes through much of the central u.s., stretching from texas to the great lakes. two people have been killed. one in oklahoma. one in wisconsin. the twisters destroyed and damaged dozens of homes and businesses. a texas mom warning about a danger after rushing her daughter to the hospital because of a popular toy. she says she was driving when her 10-year-old started choking on a piece of a fidget spinner. at first, doctors were unable to locate where it was stuck. >> then, they saw this. the x-ray revealing a round metal bearing stuck in the girl's esophagus. she is doing okay, but after surgery. eeks. >> these are toys, my nephews

fired last week. this dramatic announcement after the other bombshell, the memo coming to light about president trump's meeting in the oval office in february raising concerns mr. trump allegedly wanted the fbi to go easy on former national security adviser, michael flynn. it was the president who warned the fbi director after firing him, that "james comey better hope there are no tapes of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press." the white house has refused to stay whether the tapes exist. but what we do know according to sources, is that there are memos. james comey had a documented history of keeping notes, especially when it came to controversial matters. and after it was revealed he wrote a memo saying the president pressured him to drop the flynn investigation, now we learn there could be more memos. more documentation of interaction with the president. just as he documented his meeting in the oval office in february, one day after general flynn resigned. president trump allegedly asking vice president pence and attorney general jeff sessions
