>> jonathan bloom is live in san francisco with the very latest. jonathan? >> reporter: well, just minutes ago the san francisco district attorney's office wrapped up a press conference about that amber alert that was issued in the search for a one-year-old boy they believe was abdulcted y his own father. it was displayed on signs all over the bay area because the father and son at this point could be anywhere. the process started just after 5:30 last night when the child's mother came to the tara bell police station to report that the father 30-year-old jason lamb had not shown up to drop off their baby son makai at the time he was supposed to. they captured an image of a father and son at a business in menlo park. they didn't specify how long that image was taken. the two have joint custody. after learning new information, the d.a.'s office got involved. reports from the california highway patrol indicated lamb might have been contemplating suicide. >> sometime today we found out disturbing information regarding the father that really gave us

concern at which time we initiated an amber alert. >> but for the public out there, if you see this child, if you see this person, if you see this vehicle, please contact 911 so we can bring this child back to the loving arms of his mother. >> reporter: this is the car the authorities are looking for, a tan toyota corolla, license plate 5 sey 238. if you see the car or mr. lamb and his son, they ask that you call 911 rather than trying to intervene yourself. we'll bring you more information as we know it. for now live in san francisco, jonathan bloom abc7 news. >> jonathan, thank you. >> a sentence has been handed down for the discovery bay man who murdered a 9-year-old boy during a sleep over. >> a contra costa county judge ruled 20-year-old william schultz will go to state prison instead of a mental health facility for the 2015 murder of jordan. >> abc7 news reporter lawyer i anthony was inside the courtroom for this emotional hearing and she joins us live from martinez. laura? >> reporter: kristen, there were tears on all sides as the mother

of both the victim and the defendant spoke in the courtroom as his mother described it, billy schultz loved his best friend's family. yet he did the unthinkable. >> there are no winners. there aren't. >> reporter: it's the outcome his mother had hoped for, but one that brings her and her family little satisfaction. her son's killer, 20-year-old william billy schultz, was found sane and will spend 30 years to life in prison. >> i think justice was served and i think today marks another milestone of more healing for my family. >> we still don't have our son, and it's nothing we're rejoicing over, however we do feel comfort in the sense that billy is where he belongs. >> reporter: schultz was 18 in april 2015 when he spent the night at their house in discovery bay. an avid baseball player, 9-year-old jordy was stabbed

five times as he slept in his bunk bed. he was the best friend of his older brother. >> he hurt us. there is no denying that. my family has been able to move past it. we've been able to stay strong. >> it's very disappointing. >> reporter: schultz's attorney argued her client should be found insane and sentenced to a mental health facility not prison. >> by finding him sane, unfortunately, i think we are sending a message that this mental illness was not serious enough. >> reporter: in court for the sentencing, schultz's mother kathryn schultz said her son is highly remorseful and what he did to jordy and his family will haunt him for the rest of his life. in martinez, laura anthony, abc7 news. >> the department of homeland security is interviewing a foreign national who tried to break into the cockpit of a flight from california to hawaii. the passenger on flight 31 from los angeles to honolulu took this video showing fbi acts escorting the man in handcuffs off the plane this morning. they say he was standing near

the bathroom holding a laptop and when a flight attendant asked him to sit down, he tried to open the cockpit door. flight attendants pushed him back using a beverage cart and he returned to his seat. agents are now checking that plane for possible explosives. the threat of explosives hidden in laptops has led to the ban of electronics bigger than a cell phone on flights to the united states from ten airports in the middle east and africa. all passengers on that flight are safe. >> the bodies of a santa rosa couple missing since their plane was reported overdue on april 18 have been found. sierra county sheriff officials say brenda and mark richards plane was found crashed in a remote area south of yuba pass in sierra county. the tail portion of the plane was found tuesday. the deceased couple, they were later found inside the cockpit buried deep in the snow. a trail of smash-and-grab thieves used a hammer and a gun to rob a danville costco today. it is the second time in two weeks that this costco store has

been targeted by thieves. this time two men wearing masks entered the store around noon. one smashed a glass case and grabbed jewelry. when a store employee tried to stop him, the second suspect fired two shots. men then jumped into a waiting car and got away. no one was hurt. abc7 news reporter melanie woodrow is getting an update from danville police right now. she'll have the latest on abc7 news at 6:00. >> thick black smoke choked a san jose neighborhood today and it sent terrified residents running. sky 7 was there just moments before the fire department arrived on the scene and abc7 news reporter chris nguyen has more on the response and what neighbors are now having to deal with. >> take a look at this incredible scene captured by sky 7. heavy black smoke filling the air above. this resident grateful to have made it out of her home alive. >> i got out and all i heard was, fire. so, my aunt and my cousin woke up and they just told us to evacuate. >> reporter: fire crews responded just after 11:00 this

morning to a one alarm house fire on summer street just east of interstate 680. two families who shared this home were able to escape without injury. >> i heard some popping outside the house. so, when i checked, i saw smoke and that's why i started telling everybody there's fire. >> reporter: as the red cross helps those families affected by the fire, there is another problem on the other end of the street. you can see water gushing because of a broken water main. neighbors expressing their frustration to abc7 news. >> a lot of people need to go to their -- another work or family visiting where somebody was sick or technically just other reasons that they cannot get out. that's the main thing they were concerned. >> reporter: the san jose water company tells us the break likely happened as fire crews activated a fire hydrant causing a water hammer effect. that's when pressure is built up within the main forcing the pipe to burst. many residents blocked in with no way out by car. >> i'm like two hours later.

i mean what am i supposed to do? i mean, i can't walk to my destination, you know what i mean? i've got to -- wait until they clear it up so i can get on the road. >> reporter: the water was shut off all afternoon as crews with the water company worked to fix the problem. it is estimated 50 to 75,000 gallons of water spilled out onto the street. in san jose, chris nguyen abc7 news. >> san jose police say an incident that brought the bomb squad to a charter school today was apparently a hoax. police evacuated bridges academy on mclauchlin avenue at 8:30 this morning after a custodian found a back pack with a bottle inside labeled nitroglycerin. officers called the bomb squad. authorities haven't said what was actually in the bottle. officers are reviewing surveillance video to see if they can identify a suspect. well, with nice weather expected in the bay area this weekend, and memorial day coming up, we are being reminded of the

dangers in the ocean. five people drowned at san francisco beaches last year. rip currents pose a special hazard for waders, swimmers and surfers. an ocean og rafer said there are rip currents. >> it will look safe out there. if you look out there, it looks benign. where it's benign, that's where the rip current is ripping out, it's bam penning the effect of the waive coming in and it looks like the safest part and you get sucked right out. >> smith says if you get caught in a rip current don't fight it. you should instead swim parallel to the shore and ride the waves back into the sand. he also recommends staying away from the water if you don't know how to swim. >> a 14-year-old boy with ten warrants out for his arrest, 14 years old, he was taken into custody early this morning in santa rosa after leading police on a high speed chase. it started at about 2:00 a.m. and roen ert park police say the

teenager was driving a stolen car and had two teenage passengers. the chase reached 100 miles an hour until the driver hit a median in santa rosa. the 14-year-old behind the wheel was booked into juvenile hall. under cover officers in fresno county seized more than four pounds of synthetic hearn worth about $7 million on the street. the sheriffs office tweeted this photo of the drug bricks made up of fentanyl and ketamine. fentanyl can be deadly. the seller traveled from los angeles to finish this deal. officers found the drugs stashed inside a secret compartment in his vehicle. >> hate message, or freedom of speech? parents are angry over controversial student video and what happened afterwards at an east bay high school. >> a noisy protest by at&t workers. they are now on strike, so, what should you do if you need help? >> also the pain and gain for rent and jobs in the bay area. >> and close call, one climber's narrow escape.

one student's action has irked some parents at san ramon valley high in the east bay. the student posted a racially insensitive video against muslims and initially the school district took action against the student. but after his parents sued, the district backed off. the abc7 news reporter lyanne melendez is live in danville tonight. one parent decided to criticize the district publicly on social media. >> reporter: that's right. on facebook and instagram, dan. you know, this parent has basically taken on the martin luther king position that if you don't stand up for something, you will fall for anything. karen pierce posted on facebook in bold letters, doing the right

thing isn't always easy, but it's always right. it's in response to what the san ro moan valley unified school district failed to do after a student posted a short offensive video on twitter. >> it was a couple of kids dressed up. it was sort of a terrorist type thing. >> reporter: according to pierce, the young man was campaigning for student government. he was trying to gain more votes. but ironically, when a student here takes on a leadership role contract, promising to be a role model for others. >> he wasn't trying to hurt anyone. but this is where we need to count on our schools and our district and our teachers to kind of help our kids make those life choices. >> reporter: pierce says initially the school told him he could no longer be in a leadership role. that's when his parents took legal action. the school district admitted they were forced to comply. >> and when students exercised those first amendment rights, how it makes other students feel. it's a classic conflict that we deal with as a school and the

school districts. >> reporter: isn't this a hate message? >> again, there's first amendment rights and so if they can do whatever they want and then claim first amendment rights, free speech, it muddies the waters a little bit. >> reporter: so, the student in question will become a student leader. pierce said a simple apology could have gone a long way. in danville, lyanne melendez, abc7 news. >> students and administrators are holding a first of its kind event today at a san jose high school. some 300 students from five different schools took part in the first annual latino summit at bran enhigh school. the event was the brain child of several students concerned about graduation rates and issues affecting latino students. >> it's time for us to take some -- basically take a stand and make some changes and help each other do great things. they've been working on it the last three months. at least a couple hours a week every night on thursday nights. been really proud of them. >> reporter: the students

attended an assembly and then break out sessions like this one, organize he recalls say the goal was to create the desire for each student to go to college. >> it could be a little hectic if you plan to go to at&t store this weekend. this was the scene in front of at&t's flagship store in san francisco. cwa union workers picketed in front of this and other stores in the bay area. the workers are on a three-day strike hoping to jump start negotiations. >> they stalled in their contract negotiations and we hope to move the needle and get it. all we're asking for is a fair contract. >> the strike ends sunday night. it affects 37,000 at&t workers across the country. in a statement at&t says it will continue working hard to serve its customers and expects to reach an agreement with the union. >> santa clara county is losing jobs according to state labor officials. the county lost 2900 jobs in april. it's the third time in four months that santa clara county has seen jobs go away.

bucking the trend they added 500 jobs and the san mateo region gained 10500. california is losing 16,000 jobs in april. rents in three bay area cities are going up again. texas research firm axio metrics says san jose and oakland all showed what they called positive rent growth. for san francisco, the average rent was average rent rose 1.5% to just over $2800. oakland's average rent rose just .9%, or $2424, that is per month. occupancy rate remains high above 95%. >> a new effort is now underway to get california to secede from the united states. supporters of a proposed ballot measure gathered today at the state capital to advocate for the establishment of an independent state to be known as

it is offshore and it is going to make its way towards the coast line. so, do expect the coast to remain comfortable like it was today. 64 degrees the high so far in half moon bay. we get you will wait out towards concord it's 91. we are seeing what we typically would in the summertime which is our microclimate. i know it's spring but it's going to feel like summer especially inland this weekend. from our santa cruz camera, some people are enjoying the sun and this may be just the place for you to go to escape the heat. 67 degrees in san francisco now. mid 70s around oakland. it is 86 in san jose. but half moon bay a nice cool 59 degrees. the breeze will be blowing along the coast just enough as you see on the embarcadero to where it will keep the temperatures from getting too warm at the beaches this upcoming weekend. inland areas right now santa rosa 86. we do have 90s in some spots while inland. from our golden gate bridge camera you can see a nice view of the golden gate bridge. lots of sunshine but it is going to be foggy along the coast overnight tonight. i know some of you really love it so this is really going to be your weekend. if you like the hot weather
