now from abc 7, live breaking news. right here is in san francisco right now where a stranger tried to kidnap a child in the middle of a crowded tourist attraction. thanks for joining us. >> the mom and her 3-year-old son both visiting from missouri were inside the ferry building when this happened. abc 7 news reporter is live there now. >> reporter: well, you know, reggie, this is a bizarre story which appears to continue unfolding at this moment. we heard very little from the police issue but it appears, according to a witness, that a homeless woman, a homeless person was standing in line at the bread shop here at the ferry building. now, according to that witness, this woman, this homeless woman,

approached a mom from behind, grabbed her, and began fighting. they both started fighting on the ground, on the floor, i'm told, and they were fighting, apparently, over the baby. now, this bystander told me that another man held the homeless person down, pinned her down until police were able to apprehend her. the mother, obviously, was very upset, and when we tried to approach her, she held on to her baby. i'm told that police have taken the mother away to try to help her with this trauma, and the woman who, the homeless woman, i'm told, was arrested and taken away by police. now, it appears so far we know very little information, but appears this case is one of a homeless woman who is mentally disturbed, trying to abduct a child. that's all we know right now. we'll keep you informed later on. i'm live from the ferry building. abc 7 news. >> what a scary situation, thank

you. the mother of torres is trying to save her son from the death penalty, convicted two weeks ago of murdering sierr sierra lamar. we are live in san jose with the latest on the punishment phase of the trial. >> reporter: first day of the defense to bring up witnesses for torres, trying to convince the jury he should get life in prison and not the death penalty. he's video from this morning of his defense team walking into the courthouse. they had a busy day. the first witness for the defense was laura torres, his mother. the defense attorney, brian matthews, asked questions about the move from mexico with her family, living conditions and also the abuse she took at the hands of her husband, and at one point, laura started crying on the stand. her husband is currently in prison for child molestation. this comes after the prosecution witnesses took the stand last week with impact statements from family and friends of sierra.

the defense is expected to call the mother of torres' two kids. abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you. developing news in san francisco this morning where police look for suspects in a home invasion that escalated into an officer involved shooting. police arrived at a home at 11:00 last night as officers prepared to search the residence, several sus pickpect out the back. one fired at officer and one officer returned fire. >> at this time, there are no known injuries, result of the exchange of gunfire. from what i hear, though, it was harrowing, very, very close call for the officers that were in the backyard. >> the suspects jumped over fences and raced through adjacent backyard. one detained. the search is on for the rest. police say the victims were targeted, but they were not seriously hurt. happening now, deputies search for a missing woman in santa rosa.

this sure picture, katherine, she was last seen at home by her caretaker friday night. she's described as a high functioning schizophrenic who recently stopped taking medication. a neighbor camera captures the 54-year-old walking up a dead end driveway on mark west springs road wearing a black dress with a white shawl when she vanished. she uses a broom to help her walk. the coast guard suspended a search for a boater who went missing over the weekend after jumping into the water near the pittsburgh marina. that man saved his son from drowning on sat, but he has not been seen sense. officials say no one on board was wear iing a life jacket. new to morning, a first look at the aftermath of a fire near 880 in oakland this morning. it broke out near a training facility for the oakland fire department and train tracks. crews had to drag fire hoses across the tracks forcing all trains to stop. no word yet on what started it. officials say there's been several other recent fires in

nearby homeless encampments. the d.a. filed charges against a man they say tried to light people on fire at a deny's restaurant. 43-year-old victor rubio of union city is charged were seven counts of assault and one count of child endangerment, pouring gas on customers in a denies wednesday. witnesses say moments later, he tried to start a fire. several people held him down util the police got there. no word on a motive. a san jose state football player in critical condition after being stabbed in a bar fight early yesterday morning on post street in downtown san jose. chad miller was with friends when they got in a fight with another group. miller was stabbed and taken to santa clara medical center. his father said he was not initially involved in the fight. >> right now, we are just concerned about him being alive. football is secondary. we just want him to be alive right now. >> police have not made any

arrests. friends and family urge anyone with information on that fight to contact the police. oakland police are asking for your help fining the vandals who damaged an urban oasis. the popular gardens at lake merit. we are live to see what happened, amy? >> reporter: kristin, this part of the garden is gated. the area where this happened it tucked away back there off the main path. the vandals found their way back there over the weekend, and this morning, crews are recoffvering. a worker repaired a pipe damaged in the garden, a facebook post says the water and electrical systems were damaged in the attack, and we also noticed a broken utility vehicle. one worker estimated this cost about $50,000. they also knocked over a utility box. they damaged a bench. the facebook post also mentions eagle scout projects and hours of volunteer work all demolished. employees called this heart breaking. fans of the park agree.

jail teem. president trump's first trip overseas has commander in chief is on to the sec stop, israel. the nine-day tour started in saudi arabia over the weekend, and the president dramatically shifted from the tough talk heard on the trail to a message of unity before the world's muslim leaders. abc reports now from washington. >> reporter: today, president trump is in israel, hoping to broker what he calls the ultimate deal. middle east peace. the president and first lady touring one of christianity's holyist sites and the western wall, judaism's prayer site, and meeting with the israeli president. he kicked off the trip in saudi arab arabia, the birth police of islam, and donald trump shared a message of unity to leaders from more than 50 different muslim nations. >> i stand before you as a representative of the american people to deliver a message of friendship and hope and love.

abc news, washington. new this morning, a shakeup at ford motors. the auto giant replaced its ceo in effort to turn around slumping sales. ford introduced the new ceo, jim hackett in detroit this morning. he's been on the board since 2013, replacing fields, who's been with the ford company for 28 years and spent three years as ceo. in the time, ford stock price fell almost 40%. new this morning, uber denied reports that it charges customers more for traveling to and from upscale neighborhoods. the response comes after uber's head told bloomberg they apply machine loading techniques to estimate how much customers are willing to shell out for a ride. the report says someone coming from a a wealthy neighborhood may be asked to pay more than another person headed to a poorer part of town, even if demand, traffic, and distance are the same. in a a statement to abc 7 news, uber said fare is passed on specific routes at certain times of day, entirely based on route,
