economists are always looking for trends that forecast change. today a sharp drop in new home sales, raising questions whether the real estate market is showing signs of softening. >> reporter: kb homes has selling under way in 26 bay area communities, half in the south bay. however, the u.s. commerce

department noted a hiccup last month, new home sales in the west dropped 26%, largest drop in a knfew years. >> i think we're about to see a drop in the marketplace. >> the president of the association of realtors is starting to see a softening in the market. >> where i used to get 12 or 15 offers on a property, it's two or three and where i used to get $100,000 over offer, it's closer to $20,000. >> one in five families can afford to buy the median price home. if that number falls below 20%, which it did in 2006 and 2007, we see a slowing in the marketplace. >> reporter: housing cycles tend to run five to seven years, until a recovery starts and the

around the bay and most inland spots, except the far inland east bay. this is the view from our east bay hills camera, where you can see a little bit of fog stacked up there along the coastline. we see foggy areas overnight, cooler days ahead through friday and it will start to get milder or warmer memorial day weekend, which is a nice time for temperatures to start rising again. 59 degrees at half moon bay, 91 to fairfield, 38-degree temperature difference between half moon bay and brentwood right now. on we go to our fog force extending out over the bay and locally inland, much as it did last night and tomorrow will pull back to the coastline much as it did today. the difference is that that cooling influence will probably reach the inland areas overnight lows will range from low to mid 50s. tomorrow a few lingering high
