we are keeping up on the latest out of manchester, england, where that attack, ariana grande concert occurred. we are not only getting more details on the investigation and the suspect but getting more and more stories from the people that were affected by all of this. some of them heartbreaking, some of them heartwarming. >> indeed. abc's david muir is in manchester, and gives us both angles. >> reporter: a message from st

stories of heroism come to light. paula robinson hailed as angel of manchester. >> this big explosion went off. so we, came out of the fire exit. as we came out, we are directly at the bottom of the steps to the arena. >> she saw crowds of teenage girls running from the arena. >> i shouted everyone make your way off to the holiday inn. >> reporter: bringing dozens of young girls to safety at a nearby hotel and calling their parents for them. >> i put on social media. everybody if you are missing children, i have got children there. >> reporter: there are other stories emerging. cab drivers, offered free rides to get children, young people out quickly. >> god only knows what the people are feeling like. >> reporter: the #roomformanchester. hundreds of residents offering shelter, food, comfort. >> we live on the corner. just going to sit somewhere that was warm.

>> reporter: young people telling me that they will move forward. how do you process what happened here? >> i haven't really. it's horrible. but, just got to get on with it don't you. >> the little boy wearing the tie. what his mother told us, hoping the future will be better for her sons. >> what do you hope? >> i just hope the world gets better for him as he grows up. this isn't going to change the way people live. >> so many stories out of that. one story that i saw. a homeless guy who sleeps in the area. where the bombing took place. he was one of the first people to get there to the scene and to, start to help, some of the victims. he said just instinct. he said just because i'm homeless doesn't mean i don't have a heart. but even, more sad, and graphic was him describing having to pull nails out of the faces of young children. >> oh, god. >> horrifying images out of manchester. great ones as well all. an old mr. rogers quote, when i was a kid, sad, saw ugly things, always look for the helpers.

good morning, i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm diane macedo. here are the top headlines on "world news now." the terror threat level in britain is now at critical, the highest level. officials don't know if the manchester suicide bomber acted alone. isis has claimed responsibility but that has also not been confirmed. only a handful of the 22 people killed by the suicide bomb blast after the concert have been identified. some of the dozens of people wounded by the explosion have life threatening injuries. fill duterte proclaimed martial law where they have laid siege to a city. quite a scare at newark airport, engine fire on united airlines boeing 757 forcing

brief closure of that international airport and forcing the evacuation of the plane. five people suffered minor injuries during the emergency evacuation. some of our top stories, wednesday, may 24th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning to you all. we begin with the latest on the manchester bombing. >> british troops patrolling key sites after the terror threat index was raised to critical, the highest level. only a few of the 22 people killed publicly identified. some are still missing. family and friends try to use social media. molly is live, what's the latest? >> good morning, diana. i want to say that critical level is incredibly rare here. the last time a prime minister put the threat level at critical was july 2007, requires so many resources. additional soldiers,

additional police, additional security personnel all over the country. that it is unlikely that it will stay at crit that long. july, 2007, moved back to severe. not that severe is any more comforting of course. now here in manchester the investigation is broadening. this morning police are saying they're focusing on whether or not salman abedi acted alone. at least one person arrested. 23-year-old in south manchester. police have not said what his relationship was to salman abedi. now we are here in manchester in the town center. this is where the vigil took place last night. a beautiful vigil. thousands and thousands of people. thousands of strangers, gathering together. to unite around common messages. message last night. diane, kendis, you can't beat us. they won't win. it's not working. you can see there are flowers behind me. that pile of course will continue to grow. i did just want to show you, a couple of the papers this morning. now, here you have -- "the girls who will never go home."

we talked about young victims. so many preteens, and teenagers. and here you have got youngest victim, 8 years old. here is the manchester evening news. prayers for the missing. and the dead. of course, many pictures of the victims there. as you did mention in your intro. we'll find out probably more names of victims. there are so many families praying for their loved ones. diane and kendis. >> that will come out later today and the days to come. quite a scene there in manchester. molly hunter, thank you. >> emotional scene when a large group gathered outside of manchester city hall. >> they held a vigil for victims of monday night's attack. abc's david muir is there speaking with residents about what happens now. >> it's important. it's a horrible thing that's happened. it won't change the city. >> why was it so important for you to come out today?

they will be speaking face to face. and last year you might remember the pope criticized then candidate trump's border wall proposal. saying the idea was not christian. >> trump fired back saying it was disgraceful to question his faith. the man, the men have also clashed over climate change. so it will be a good meeting. here in the u.s. there were major revelations from the former head of the cia in the trump russia probe. john brennan told congress he didn't have enough information to say if there was collusion. >> brennan said he warned russia about meddling in last year's presidential race. brennan admitted possible connections to the trump campaign led him to call for an fbi investigation. >> i encountered and am aware of information and intelligence that revealed contacts and interactions between russian officials and u.s. persons involved in the trump campaign. >> we should note this.

the national intelligence director, dan coats declined to comment on a report president trump asked him to publicly deny any evidence of collusion. abc news has learned the president will retain a private attorney to represent him in the russia investigation. breaking overnight rescuers in nepal found the body of four climbers at the highest camp on mt. everest. raises the death toll this climbing season so far to ten people. four climbers died just this weekend including a 50-year-old, rolland gearwood, doctor from alabama survived an earthquake on everest two years age in the process of climbing the tallest peeks on all seven continents. back here on the home front happening now, soaking storms are concerned in the southeast. checking the radar. that entire region will get a dose of heavy rain, damaging winds, and possible tornado today. heavy rain causing flooding from texas all the way to charleston, south carolina. some areas got up to 4 inches of

give off to the claim of responsibility? >> well you, got to look at it, from a different perspective. and we saw this -- over time after 9/11. where anwar al alwaki, started to, basically use propaganda where he was starting to communicate to sympathizers and potential terrorists here in the u.s. and throughout europe. and isis took it to a different level. they really started to, what i call, plant the seeds throughout western civilization. and try to radicalize and get basically brainwashing, of these individuals that are disaffected with their life. that are detached from their society, wherever they live, in this case talking manchester, in the uk. and, because they are planting those seeds, they're building this kind of brainwashing or mind set, like abedi and many others we have seen where they have now taken it on themselves. they don't need to travel
