are flocking to see a dead whale in the north bay. somebody discovered the 80-foot blue whale on a beach yesterday morning and this afternoon we're learning more about what may have led to its death. abc 7 news report cornell bernard is live with our story tonight. cornell. >> reporter: eric, the whale is about a quarter mile from where we are standing on this cliff. mammal experts believe of that she was likely struck by a ship and for now this weekend she's attracting quite a crowd. >> i find it shocking. i've never seen it, chunks. i think it's just a shame. >> fern simcof was overcome with emotion at the sign of this glient 80-foot blue whale cashing cuss which washed up on ago get biech. hundreds of onlookers are snapping pictures of the female whale. >> it's pretty impressive, you know. it's pretty amazing it's the largest living thing that's ever existed on the earth. >> the smell is intense and

overwhelming for some who had to cover their noses. >> by the time i got within about 50 yards of it i was ready to throw up. >> sky 7 was overhead. after she washed ashore on friday morning. >> she's the largest whale i've ever seen. >> this woman from the mammal center helped perform a knee crop sky on the whale she said it's likely she was struck by a passion ship. >> with the jurds and trauma along the west left side, it's hard to break whale bones so i would definitely say boetd. >> blue whales are endangered. during whale migration periods between summer and fall ships entering san francisco bay are asked to slow their speed. >> slowing down when they come in and out of san francisco bay is an important aspect of trying not to have collisions. >> yeah, it's really sad. it's really sad that they're endangered and a lot of people are killing these or their just dying naturally.

derby. and this after noont music world is mourning the death of rock legend gregg allman. ♪ and i'm bound to keep on riding ♪ >> a public cyst today confirmed the cofounder of the aulman brothers ban passed away in savannah, georgia. he was known for "midnight rider" and he lived in the north bay for much of the '90s. had he to cancel tour dates for health reasons the past two years. he was 69 years of age. an 18-year-old east bay boy is being called a hero for helping to rescue his younger brother from their home. they posted this picture of last night's fire on cherry way. officials say 18-year-old patel low jumped from a second-story window. he then tried to get his 13-year-old brother who's on the autism spectrum out of a second-story room. a neighbor said she grabbed a chair from the house but it

wouldn't reach the window. they found another labor e neighbor who had a ladder. >> just ran into action grabbed the ladder, ran across the street and they finally got up to the window and drug the brother out to the second story, got him on the ground. his brother was so brave, he would not leave. he would not let his brother out of his sooitd sight. >> the 13-year-old suffered smoke inhalation and is recovering at children's hospital. the boys's parents were not home at the time. today ffrz in fremont were watching for hot spots after a big fire at a store rage facility. it started around 8:30 last night at fremont mini storage on fee front boulevard. 18 units suffered major damage from the flames and several others had smoke damage. one customer we talked to said a manager told him his unit had to be cut open to see if there was any fire inside. he was told there was only minor smoke damage. in san francisco, several blocks of hayes valley were closed off for most of the afternoon after a driving tried to run over a police officer. it happened just before 10:0on

lagoon april street. police say a plainclothes officer tried to stop the driver who then tried to hit the officer and ended up crashing. the driver then ran off. police locked down the area until they could find and arrest the suspect. no officers were injured. president trump is headed back to the u.s. tonight as his administration deals with a growing amount of scandals. abc news reporter karen trav vers has our story from the president's last stop. >> reporter: president trump wrapping up his first overseas trip calling it a success. >> we have been gone for close to nine days and i think we hit a home run no matter where we are. >> >> reporter: before jegt off on air force one for washington, the president speaking to u.s. service members at national air force bases in sicily but the president returns home with one big issue still outstanding. what to do about kplooimt climate change, the u.s. standing alone. it reaffirms a strong commitment to the paris climate agreept.

the white house says the president's views on the 2015 accord are evolving. he tweeted he'll make his final decision next week on whether the u.s. will stand stay in or pull out. and waiting for him back home a growing political storm. trump's son-in-law and white house senior advise jared kushner discuss wtd russian ambassador to the u.s. the possibility of setting up a back channel. secret secure communications between trump's transition team and the kremlin to discuss syria and other policy issues. in sicily saturday, white house officials refusing to answer questions on kushner but national security adviser h.r. macmcmaster said a back channel would allow for discrete communications. >> i would not be concerned about it. >> president trump's expected to meet with his senior staff back in washington this week to discuss how to respond to the onslaught of allegations about contacts with russia. the president and his team have avoided talking about those controversies while on this trip but they won't be able to avoid it much longer.

abc news traveling with the president in sicily. all british airways flights to and from heath throw in london were grounded today because of a major i.t. system failure. british airways says there's no evidence the problems were the result of a cyberattack. ed if is one of britain's busiest traveling days because it's a bank hom day week and the half term break for some schools. most long-haul flights due to arrive in london tomorrow are expected to land as normal including a delayed flight that left oakland just a few minutes ago. two departures and two cons kaps e8d because of the british way failure. there are also some delays and close yours due to that runway repair that's been happening for weeks now. the runway was shut down last night and is scheduled to remain closed through monday morning. we talked to one passenger who's flight to las vegas was delayed for several hours. >> it did have some problem for us also because now nothing is

back now with some terrifying moments for customers at a gas station in sacramento. police are now reviewing this surveillance video from last week of a woman wildly ramming parked cars, some with people inside. people at the arco gas station last saturday night were understandably shaken up. >> all i could remember was running for my life. >> i was running from side to side when she go around that side, i woo wo hide on this side. >> i thought she was trying to kill zwlus me and my friend were

about to get car [ sobbing ]. >> i'm so zbloer the rampaging motorist drove away. they say this isn't the first time she's done this and he worries she might come back. police are asking anyone with information about the driver to come forward. this memorial day weekend after five decades of searching the remains of a mission navy pilot are back home with his family in southern california. let commander frederick crosby died in june of 1965 in vietnam after his plane was shot down by the enemy. the 30 wurn-year-old's body was never found. crosby's daughter who was 6 at the time he died helped spearhead the search. finally crosby's remains were found in a fish pond in vietnam along with his uniform, lighter, and wedding band. >> this was a huge fish pond full of clay and mud and they emptied it. just it's nice to be able to let out the tears and to have some

20 young students from richmond took a special trip to los angeles this week. the nonprofit for richmond sent us this video. it organized the trip along with jet suite "x," the kids sclekt e selected for being the most improved academically in their schools were flown to l.a. today. they visited science center. for many of the kids this was their first time on an airplane and traveling outside the bay area. >> and in accuweather today, the clouds, stubborn this morning but the sunshine has prevailed this afternoon. it's a nice start to the holiday weekend. live do, seven showing you we have all clear out there scanning the skies trying to

coming up on abc 7 news at 6:00, a warning to the bay area parents tonight after police warn parents of a child molester who's aggression scared their daughter. and a great white canoe with fins flipping. well, they won't play at bottlerock music festival until tomorrow night but they're already wowing fans this weekend. the platinum selling rock band played a surprise show in front of a smal audience last night at napa's blue note club. they will close out bottlerock tomorrow night. that's it for abc 5:00.
