live where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> three water slides at a dublin water park where a boy narrowly escapes serious injury will be closed to the public but open to engineers and safety experts tomorrow who will try to figure out what went wrong. good evening. i'm eric thomas. the 10-year-old boy went zooming off one of the slides yesterday. it was the first day of operation at the 31,000-square-foot water park in dublin. abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley is live with new details at the wave. and leslie, the inspectors have lots of questions to answer. >> that's right, eric. tonight here at the wave, dublin city officials say they want to know what happened. why did that 10-year-old boy careen off a slide on the very first day this park was operating here. cal osha inspected all six of these slides on friday and

issued permits. the very next day, 90 minutes after the grand opening on saturday, this happened. a 10-year-old boy hydroplaned off the emerald plunge slide. he scraped his back and is now back home with his family in san francisco. after the accident, the green slide and the blue slide next to it, both with steep 80-degree drops were shut down. now a third slide has been closed. >> totally unrelated. simply put, we need to continue to monitor the water flow pressure. and the actual device that does that was not showing any reading. it was malfunctioning. >> reporter: so three out of six slides are roped off for mao. cal osha inspectors plan to meet with the manufacturer at this city owned water park on monday. >> obviously our collective goal is to get to the bottom of it. >> the injured boy appeared to be following the instructions given on all the slides. >> they ask you to cross your arms and cross your legs. and you just go down. >> a thousand people showed up

on saturday. another thousand enjoyed the new water park on sunday. some looked cautiously at the slide where the accident happened. >> it's very narrow. >> i would just go for it and like follow their instructions so i wouldn't get hurt. >> this week will mark 20 years since a tragic accident at the privately owned water world park in concord. in 1997, a slide collapsed, killing an 18-year-old and injuring 30 other high school students who tried to crowd on to it. here this brand-new water park is earning rave reviews so far as dublin waits for word on why the boy flew off the slide and what they can do to make sure it doesn't happen again. i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. tonight the coast guard has called off a search for a man who jumped into the water near the antioch bridge to retrieve a hat. earlier today a coast guard helicopter flew over the scene searching for the missing 53-year-old. the man jumped into the water 5:00 at saturday afternoon. friends on board the vessel tried helping the man out of the

water, but eventually lost sight of him. new at 11:00, a family out for a hike in the east bay ended up leaving in a helicopter. a man and his young daughters ages 6 and 8 got lost in the wilderness east of danville. they started at bollinger canyon road and ended up on the rocky ridge trail. after wandering around for several hours, the dad called 911. the helicopter took two hours to track them down and had to make two trips to get everyone, including the family dog, to safety. tonight the u.s. government is considering expanding a current laptop ban to include all international countries. homeland security secretary jon kelley says it would be in response to terrorists who are obsessed with bringing down american airplanes. abc 7 reporter lilian kim has our story from sfo. >> many travelers say they rely on their time in the air to use their laptops for work. >> 11-our flight. i have to use it. >> travelers flying in and out of the u.s. might soon be banned

from using electronic devices larger than a phone while in the air. such devices would instead have to be placed in checked luggage. homeland security secretary jon kelley suggested the possibility on fox news. >> that's really the thing that they're obsessed with, the terrorists. the idea of knocking down an airport in flight, particularly if it's a u.s. carrier, particularly if it's full of mostly u.s. folks. >> the government already imposed restrictions two months ago on large electronic devices in cabins from devices coming from ten middle east and african countries. then earlier this month there was talk of bans on all flyings from europe. she says a laptop ban on international flights into and out of u.s. would change everything. >> this trip, it would have affected me a lot. because i had a lot of work to do. and i wouldn't have been able to take the time off if i wasn't going to be able to work while on the flight. >> and some companies don't even allow employees to check their work laptops. >> if i'm traveling on business,

and you notice, it's a real gradual thinning out of the clouds by 10:00 in the morning. so we'll take a much closer look at how warm we get on the holiday tomorrow and track much cooler air waiting in the wings coming up in the whole accuweather forecast. >> thank you. a brushfire that burned near the getty center in los angeles this afternoon led to the evacuations of some homes in mandeville canyon area north of brentwood. more than 150 firefighters battled the blaze. officials believe the fire was started accidentally by a contractor clearing away weeds. crews were able to put out the fire before damage to any nearby structures. volunteers in oakland are organizing at an event to repair the gardens at lake merritt. last week vandals knocked over, ripped out plant, damaged the sprinkler and even took the front tire off a work vehicle. they did more than $50,000 in damage. the water and power systems have been repaired, but there is still a lot more work to do. if you would like to help, the volunteer event is next saturday at 10:30 in the morning.

a san jose police officer is on paid leave tonight after the city's sixth shooting involving officers this year. police say the officer shot and killed a man armed with an ax on east st. john street. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard tells us the suspect had a history of mental illness. >> i heard about four they say gunshots. i thought they were fire crackers. >> residents living at the donner lofts heart gunshots after midnight. san jose police were called here by security guards who reported a disturbance from a third floor apartment. when they arrived -- >> officers observed flames and smoke coming from underneath the front door. >> this picture shows burn marks on the bottom of the door. officers forced their way in and were confronted by two men. one was subdued, the other man was armed with an ax. >> a taser was deployed. however, it had no effect on the suspect. >> the chief says the man dropped the ax, but quickly rearmed himself with it. >> and it was not until he began to threaten the officers with the ax and began to advance on

the officers that the officer was given no other choice than to discharge his firearm in defense of his life. >> the man died later at a hospital. police say he was mentally ill. with a long rap sheet of violence, weapons, and drug charges. he had once been committed to a mental institution. >> this is our sixth officer-involved shooting this year. and i will tell you all six have to do with mental illness. and so that is concerning to me. >> this man lives inside the affordable housing complex. he says his friend had problems. >> he didn't mean no harm. he always talked crazy. but he was a gentle soul. >> the officer who fired the shots is a two-year veteran of the force and had received crisis intervention training to help diffuse conflicts with the mentally ill. in san jose, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. university of california students are shelling out more for tuition while the regents are hosting lavish parties. the "san francisco chronicle" reports the regents have spent more than $225,000 on dinner

35-year-old jeremy joseph christian is a self-proclaimed white supremacist with a violent history. it's too early to tell whether the act was an act of domestic terrorism or a hate crime. tonight president trump is spending his first full night at the white house after his nine-day foreign trip. the flag there is at half-staff right now because of memorial day. this comes as the president is considering overhauling his white house staff as the russia scandal shows no signs of slowing down. abc news reporter david wright has our story from washington, d.c. >> back at the white house and back on twitter, president trump scores his first overseas trip as a success. today he blasted back at news reports on the russia investigation, insisting many of the leaks coming out of the white house are fabricated lies made up by the fake news media. the president arrived home to a bit of a reality check. questions swirling about his son-in-law jared kushner. >> mr. president, did jared

live where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> good evening. i'm eric thomas. in tonight's headlines, tomorrow cal osha will meet with the manufacturer of a water slide at the new wave party park in dublin. they're trying to figure out why a 10-year-old boy went flying off the side of the slide 90 minutes after the park had its grand opening yesterday. the city has close lead slides until it can figure out what went wrong. police in san jose say they had to shoot and kill a mentally ill man who came at officers with an ax this morning. they say the suspect was trying to light an apartment on fire at the donner lofts. they used a taser on him at first, but they say that did not work. homeland security expert jon kelley wants to expand the ban on laptops to planes to all international flights in and out of the u.s. right now the ban is only for flights coming from ten middle eastern and african countries. kelly says he believes the expansion would stop terrorists who are obsessed with bringing

missile, one that landed in the ocean, according to south korea's joint chiefs of staffs, the missile appeared to be a scud. it was tracked for six minutes before it landed in the sea of japan. tonight a spokesperson for the national security council says president trump has been briefed on the launch. the city of manchester is trying to get back to normal after last week's devastating bomb attack. ♪ a massachusettsing band played's's don't look back in anger at the race today. the event was under heavy security. today a 19-year-old man was arrested in connection with the bombing, the 13th person detained in a massive investigation into the deadly concert blast. tragedy struck this memorial day weekend's fleet week celebration in the new york area. a member of the navy's elite leapfrogs parachute team was killed when his chute malfunction durding a demonstration jump.

the navy s.e.a.l. landed near liberty state park. >> he was retrieved immediately by u.s. coast guard personnel and the jersey city fire department marine unit were specifically standing by in vessels to support the event. >> the s.e.a.l. was rushed to a local hospital where he died. his identity has not been released. the leapfrogs are part of many fleet week events nationwide including san francisco's. this memorial day weekend is extra special for one vietnam veteran. abc news reporter tom llamas has the story that takes one man from the mekong delta all the way to the mississippi. >> retired soldier jim craigler is on a new mission, 45 years after getting out of vietnam alive. >> you know, the horrors of war, they never leave you. >> especially for gold star families. >> it's family that has lost a loved one in combat and service to their country protecting our freedoms. >> so here he is on a 2300 mile journey down the mississippi

many people may be spending their long weekend at lake tahoe where the water is higher than it's been in a while. the wet winter filled up the lake past its natural rim, providing both benefits and challenges. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony has the story from tahoe city.

>> it's everywhere you look at lake tahoe. water, that is. the lake is now well above its natural rim for the first time in years, and still going up. the comparison to last year is stunning. this is what it looked like on the south shore at regan beach last year. and here is the exact same scene this year. >> it's phenomenal the difference. it is remarkable. we had such a long winter and so much precipitation. as it was coming down we knew it was going to be a great summer. >> and now with all the water flowing through the dam at tahoe city and heading down the truckee river towards squaw valley and beyond, there is a bit of a trade-off. >> it's running higher, faster and colder. so right now there is a little bit of danger. it's really impossible to get underneath some of the bridges. so all the rafting companies are not open right now. >> but the benefits clearly outweigh the risks when it comes to tahoe's bounty. this is what the pier at tahoe's
