anniversary of the birth of president john f. kennedy. america's youngest president ever elected into office. the jfk library and museum beginning a year long celebration to mark the former president's centennial. those are some of our top stories on this memorial day, monday, may 29th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." we begin this half-hour with north korea facing international condemination over its latest missile launch. >> the north fired a short-range missile hours age flew 280 miles, landing in the sea of japan. it is the latest sign that the north is bent on improving its fire power that may one day be capable of reaching the u.s. abc's correspondent has the latest from seoul. >> reporter: north korean leader kim jung-un is making it loud and clear. nine missile tests so far this year, he wants a variety of missiles that could threaten close neighbors and far away enemies like the united states.

the farthest tipped with nuclear bombs. after carrying out two nuclear tests last year, kim is ready for another underground test. the test include long and short-range missiles, some using liquid or at times, solid fuel. launched from submarines or even mobile launchers making them difficult to track. >> we always assume that with a testing program they get better with each test. >> reporter: patience is running out, especially for japan. many of these tests of missiles fall close to or within their waters. >> reporter: we cannot accept north korea taking provocative action, ignoring the repeated warnings from the international community he says. for south korea's new liberal president, it is a slap in the face. moon took office with promises to push for a softer approach on his northern neighbor. just last week, he signalled to restart civilian exchange after years of complete shutdown.

opened fire on their bus heading to a religious site. a chicago area man, is among the dead, his two sons, a grandchild, and other family members were also with him. his wife also was shot. but she survived. and there has been a new development in the investigation into last monday's terror attack at a concert in manchester, england. an arrest made. a 23-year-old man bringing the total to 16 arrests now. and 14 suspects are still in custody. 22 people included seven children were killed when the suicide bomber detonated the bomb after the concert. back here at home police in mississippi arrested a man who allegedly killed eight people in a house-to-house shooting rampage. one of those dead includes a sheriff avenue deputy. 35-year-old, cory godbolt apparently got into an argument with an estranged wife and her family. he allegedly pulled out a gun opened fire, killing three women including mother-in-law. the sheriff's deputy responded to the disturbance when he was killed. he then allegedly killed two

boys at a second home. and a man and a woman in a third home. he was in handcuffs there and spoke to a reporter. >> i was having a conversation with a stepdaddy and her mama and her, my wife, about me taking my children home. people who didn't live at the house. >> godbolt told reporters kept going until he ran out of bullets. he said he was hoping to do suicide by cop his intention. his estranged wife and two children managed to escape. president trump will take part in memorial day wreath laying ceremony after returning to a was remains in crisis mode. his son-in-law now at the center of attention after sources say he tried to establish a secret line of communication with the russians. here is abc's david wright. >> reporter: at the white house, damage control. the president finally back from his first big foreign trip. >> i think we hit a home run no matter where we are.

>> reporter: instead of doing a victory lap, he is circling the wagons. president's daughter ivanka spotted consulting the private lawyer trump has retained to handle the investigation. her husband, jared kushner, the latest official to come under scrutiny. not a target of the investigation according to sources, but he does face enough questions that some in the president's inner circle now privately say it might be time for kushner to consider a leave of absence. first and foremost, why did kushner try and set up a secret back channel with the russian ambassador. even after u.s. intelligence agencies concluded that russia tried to meddle in the election. >> i do think there ought to be a review of his security clearance to find out whether he was truthful or candid, if not then there is no way he can maintain that clearance. >> the president's allies on capitol hill, stand by him.

>> look, i -- i think jared has said that he's, more than willing to answer any and all questions. >> the president's son, eric, on fox news. >> nonsense. really, it is a witch-hunt, really, really insane. >> reporter: the president himself is clearly frustrated. the russia story continues to be such a distraction. he railed against the leaks, that have been keeping the story front and center. it is my opinion that many of the leaks coming out of the white house are fabricated lies made up by the fake news media. the president would rather the focus now be on his trip. a great success for america. hard work, but big results, he tweeted. at least two of america's allies, don't see it that way. german chancellor angela merkel expressed doubts about britain >> reporter: the times when we could completely count on others are over, she told supporters. a lesson she says she learned in

the past few days. the new french president, macron, who seemed to snub trump at the g-7, dodging right, to greet merkel first, now says his famous white knuckle handshake with trump was a moment of truth designed to show he's no pushover. macron told a french newspaper, it wasn't innocent. in the midst of all of this, the white house is meeting now to retool its communications strategy. not clear if sean spicer will be back at the podium in the briefing room, there is talk of getting rid of the briefings altogether. and there are even reports that the president's tweets may be reviewed by a team of lawyers before he sends them out into the world. david wright, abc news, the white house. >> oh, we have enjoyed those tweets that have not been gone through anybody. anyway, president trump says he will decide this week whether to withdraw the u.s. from the paris agreement on climate change. the president was the only leader to leave the g-7 summit

without committing to the landmark deal aimed at curbing green house gas emissions. mr. trump had questioned the existence of climate change in the past. just last week, pope francis personally asked him to remain in the paris accord. mass evacuations ordered in sri lanka amid deadly mudslides. half a million have been displaced. dozens more people are missing in what is described as the country's worst flooding since 2003. more than 100,000 people have filled hundreds of relief camps. some towns are under nearly 20 feet of water. authorities say the waters are receding but they're expecting more rain. at least two people are dead and a third missing after their vehicle was swept away by a flash flood in missouri. two other people in that vehicle managed to escape. the search for the missing person will resume at day break. the weather will be much nicer today in branson, but that storm system is moving east. >> as they do. accuweather, paul williams, tracking it. good morning, paul.

rock pioneer is being remembered after his passing this weekend. ♪ >> reporter: gregg allman, equal parts, soulful balladeer, and rock star. as the lead singer for the allman brothers they crafted music richly infused with rock, blues, and jazz. gregg and older brother dwayne on lead guitar formed the group in 1969, what followed, a string of hits including this classic. just two years later, a motorcycle crash claimed the life of brother dwayne, gregg keeping the band together and soldiering on, eventually recording one of their biggest hits. ♪ lord i was born a rambling man ♪ >> take a melody of a song and make it feel powerful and earnest and could connect with his listeners in that way.

about foreign contacts and work on the campaign. >> now the terrible scene in new york harbor. an investigation under way to find out what went tragically wrong in a skydiving event over new york harbor that killed a navy s.e.a.l. skydiver part of the navy elite parachute team. the leapfrogs. was free falling, high above the statue of liberty, when his chute failed just seconds before he landed in the water. he was rushed to the hospital. where he died from his injuries. the region's naval commander says the s.e.a.l. community have lost a true patriot and their hearts and prayers go out to his family. this morning's parade and other memorial day activities could get rained out in parts of the country. severe storms are possible from the gulf coast to virginia and showers in the northeast and upper midwest are also expected. but afternoon storms along the east coast will have moved out to sea. weather should be great for outdoor activities. meanwhile, tennessee in clean-up mode after a massive storm brought an historic power outage. 80 mile per hour winds ripped trees from the ground. more than 150,000 customers lost power in the memphis area. strong storms also caused damage

in southern missouri flipping trailers, crushing cars and causing flash flooding. mississippi sheriff's deputy among eight people killed in a wild shooting rampage in jackson. police say it all started with a domestic dispute involving the suspected gunman, 35-year-old, cory godbolt and estranged wife and family. godbolt went door to door shooting and killing three women including his mother-in-law. as well as the several boys before -- himself. receiving a minor gunshot wound. now, godbolt allegedly told a reporter he kept going until he ran out of bullets and suicide by cop was his intention. in the meantime, we are learning more about the brutal knife attack onboard a train in portland, oregon. 17-year-old destiny magnum is thanking the two good samaritan who gave their lives to rush to their defense. magnum says she and a friend wearing a hajib, killing two men and wounding a third. in addition to murder charges,

35-year-old jeremy christian may face federal hate crime or domestic terrorism charges. getting our first look at an accident at a brand-new water park in california. it shows young boy flying off a walter slide, then sliding along the concrete below. abc's correspondent has more. >> reporter: heart stopping video from a water park in northern california. a 10-year-old boy goes airborne from the three-story water slide hitting the pavement. the boy, walking away, witnesses say he was badly shaken, but somehow only suffered scrapes and bruises. >> seemed to be okay. came right up. and immediately went into the first aid room. was assessed by staff. >> reporter: the bay area park saying emerald plunge ride had been tested scores of times. the accident overshadowing the grand opening of the $43 million complex. this incident less than a year after 10-year-old caleb schwab

was killed on the world's tallest water slide in kansas. this month his family receiving a $20 million settlement. there have been at least 29 deaths on amusement park rides or water slide since 2010. and every year, up to 4,200 people end up in the e.r. with injuries from water slides. officials at the bay area park vowing not to reopen the ride until they fix whatever caused this close call. >> we are going to do everything we can to make sure that doesn't happen again. >> we spoke with park officials, they are considering making safety changes, but not until their investigation is complete and they know exactly what went wrong. abc news, new york. british airways hoping things back to normal following the massive computer failure which threw the airline into worldwide chaos. the i.t. issues started on saturday. the airline blaming them on power supply problem. many systems were back on line

yesterday. british authorities, there, say the majority of flights out of its two main london hubs should operate today. however passengers should expect some residual delays. laptops may soon be banned now from the main cabins of all international flights to and from the u.s. the current rule affecting incoming flights from ten mostly middle eastern cities, took effect in march. homeland security secretary john kelly says a change would combat new terrorist technologies. he told fox news, sunday, american carriers remain enticing targets. there is a real threat. numerous threats against aviation. that's really the thing that they're obsessed with. the terrorists. the idea of knocking down an airplane in flight, a u.s. carrier, full of mostly u.s. folks. >> right now the ban calls for electronics larger than a smartphone to be checked. that includes your simple cameras. it affects about 50 flights a day, all on foreign carriers, carriers. the ban was not based on a specific threat however.

the canadian man has quite the proposal story to tell this morning. just not the one he planned. >> he popped the question on a romantic hot air balloon ride in the edmonton alberta area. sounds great. his girlfriend said yes. amazing. >> great. >> but, things went downhill from there. >> yeah. >> just moments later the pilot told them, and the other ten passengers to brace for an emergency landing. >> then all of a sudden. we are still, 30, 40 feet up in the air. just the whole thing shakes. and, you hear, like cracking of branches. and in a tree. >> the pilot managed to get the basket and balloon out of the tree. then they hit another tree. they finally landed in a farmer's field. no serious injuries. just apparently a broken fingernail. >> hopefully not her ring finger. you know. for the photos. >> put that one on display.

defense secretary james mattis says north korea is posing a direct threat to the united states as it works on longer range missiles. the u.s. plans to test its missile defense system tomorrow for the first time in three years. german chancellor angela merkel is urging european union countries to stick together as they cope with policy differences with the united states, as well as brexit. merkel said in times, which they can fully count on others is over. her comments came after president trump criticized german trade policies and said he needed more time to make a decision on the paris climate change agreement. all of the other g 7 leaders committed to honoring the deal. president trump is tweeting once again over his week-long trip overseas. angry at a familiar target, the media. slamming the media sources saying his son-in-law and senior adviser jared kushner tried to establish that secret back channel to communicate with high level russian officials. we get more now from abc's david wright. >> reporter: back at the white

house, and back on twitter, president trump scores his first overseas trip as a success. he blasted back at news reports on the russia investigation, insisting many of the leaks coming out of the white house are fabricated lies made up by the fake news media. the president arrived home to a bit of a reality check. questions swirling about his son-in-law jared kushner. >> mr. president -- >> reporter: the fbi wants to know why kushner, a top adviser to the president, met with the russian ambassador back in december, along with retired lieutenant general mike flynn. sources familiar with that meeting say kushner wanted to open a secret back channel on the u.s. response to syria, and other policy matters. >> to have the president's son-in-law, key player within the trump organization, trying to establish a back channel with the russians, through a russian diplomatic facility, you have to ask, well who are they hiding conversations from. >> reporter: the contact with

a major brushfire in southern california now blamed on a weed whacker. about 30 acres burned in los angeles yesterday. some homes were evacuated. no reported injuries. investigators say the fire started when a weed whacker being used near flammable materials overheated. and in florida, a spacex rocket test caused brushfire near cape canaveral. some debris landed in a grassy area. the fire burned four acres, federal authorities say no structures were threatened. spacex begins a resupply mission to the international space station on thursday. if you have been thinking about wowing your friends with a grand entrance at your next party, yeah. >> i like this. >> might have a tough time topping this one. >> all right, the arrival of the game ball for the portuguese soccer final. that is a guy riding a drone. he is going all green goblin and so forth. scoops down on to the field. >> with the ball. >> puts the ball down. >> floated 30 feet off the ground at one point. landed midfield no less.
