the main railroad station in manchester, england opened this morning a week after the suicide bombing nearby. hundreds of people attended the vigil last night for victims of the terror attack. those are some of the top stories we are following. it is today, may 30th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning to you. we begin with president trump. >> the president took part in a tradition, memorial day wreath laying ceremony at arlington national cemetery. where he expressed gratitude for those who made the ultimate sacrifice. a lot of people paying attention to this. as he sang along to the instrumental version of the national anthem. meanwhile the president is standing by his son-in-law, who is under intense scrutiny over his contacts with russia. abc's mary bruce has the latest. >> president trump marking this memorial day with a solemn ceremony. greeting families of the fallen.

>> you take care of yourself. >> thank you so much. >> his first public event since arriving back home from the overseas trip and back into the center of the russia firestorm. in the spotlight, now, trump's son-in-law, jared kushner. sources say he tried to create a secret communications channel, with moscow, even after intelligence agencies found that russia had meddled in the election. but the president is fighting back. defending kushner in a statement off to "the new york times." saying, jared is doing a great job for the country. i have total confidence in him. he is respected by virtually everyone." he is one of the president's closest advisers. >> jared is a very successful real estate person. but i actually think he likes politics more than real estate. i must tell you. he is very good at politics. >> kushner right there for key moments like the strike against syria. traveling on a secret mission to iraq. and just last week, at trump's side during meetings with foreign leaders.

kushner is not a target of the fbi's investigation. but they do want to talk with him. and now, quietly, some in the president's inner circle are wondering if it might be time for him to take a leave of absence. sunday, kushner's wife, ivanka spotted at the white house with the private lawyer the president hired to tackle the russia investigation. the administration insists kushner did nothing wrong. that any back channel with russia would have been used to to discuss syria and other policy matters. >> it's both normal in my opinion and acceptable. even some republicans disagree. >> i've don't like it. i just don't, i know that -- some administration officials are saying, well that's standard procedure. i don't think it is standard procedure. >> a top democrat is calling for a review of kushner's security clearance. >> i think we need to get to the bottom of the allegations, but i do think there ought to be a review of his security clearance to see if he was truthful or candid. >> the white house is retooling

its communication strategy to deal with the constant drip of russia stories. one thing they're considering fewer on camera face-offs with the press. mary bruce, abc news, the white house. so far, the 2:00 p.m. spicer briefing scheduled for today. new president of france minced no words as he hosted russian president vladamir putin. with putin standing inches away from him, macron, said they spread lying propaganda about him. during the french election. macron talked to putin about homophobia and lgbt rights in chechnya. the french making a point of accepting the first gay refugees from chechnya on the same day of putin's visit there. the two leaders did find some common ground, agreeing to work together to fight terrorism. >> back in putin's mother russia, at least 11 deaths are blamed on a powerful storm system. in moscow. most of the deaths were caused by falling trees.

there. more than 9,000 homes were left without power. north korea claiming a breakthrough in the missile program. the country says it was able to get ready for the latest launch. more quickly. and that the short-range ballistic missile has a precision system that can zero in on a target within 23 feet. north korea says it needs the missiles to defend itself against the united states. meanwhile, the murder trial in malaysia of two women acuesed of assassinating the half brother of north korea's leader has been moved to another court. the lower court that was to hear the case has no jurisdiction over the murder. the women, one from vietnam, the other from indonesia, are accused of smearing a nerve poison on his face at the airport in february. back in the u.s., specifically, texas. tensions boiling over at the state capital. lawmakers physically clashing over the state's new ban on what is called sanctuary cities. the issue sparked altercations
