romero. the school district plans to wait until june, 2018, before replacing heating systems an installing heating systems in arbuckle, cureton and m elementary school. the teachers union wonders why the school district is adding more rooms when this is more of a pressing concern. the district was given $260 million to address issues like this. the mercury news says two investigations have started over allen rock's construction payments to its manager. a report from the state agency is expected to be released soon. reporting live from in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you. we have developing news at the white house this morning. president trump's communication director michael dubke has resigned. the 47-year-old was on the job only three months. abc news has learned he resigned on may 18 but offered to stay olen in the end of the president's first foreign trip. we expect to hear more at a white house briefing later today.

new information in the trump/russia investigation. cnn reporting russian government officials discussed having potentially derogatory information about president trump during the 2016 election. the conversations were intercepted by u.s. intelligence and were financial in nature, meantime, members of the president's inner circle are pushing senior trump adviser jared kushner to take a leave of absence amid reports of an fbi investigation. sources say he tried to create a secret communications channel with moscow after intelligence agencies found russia meddled in the election. abc's chief white house correspondent jonathan charles weighed in on the latest development. >> he's now at the center of the russia investigation. not a target, no indication he will become one but a person of interest and you have people very close to the president saying can he really do all of that and keep the massive portfolio that he has here at the white house? the administration insists that kushner did nothing wrong saying any back channel with

russia would have been used to discuss syria and other policy matters. the former dictator of panama, manuel noriega, has died. he was the head of military from 1983 to 1989 when the u.s. invaded panama and ousted him. u.s. agents later arrested noriega on drug and money laundering charges. he as been in intensive care since march after complications from brain surgery. manuel noriega was 83 years old. a lake county man is in custody after allegedly attacking a man with a machete in what's believed to be a hate crime. clear lake police say 34-year-old anthony hammond cut an african-american man on the shoulder with a machete saturday night after yelling racial slurs. hammond was arrested after an hour's long standoff at his apartment and is being held on more than $1 million bail. >> this is a reminder not to leave your keys in your car. take a look. napa police say they found all of these keys on one suspected car thief. they arrested joshua eisen yesterday after people reported seeing him rying to get into

cars. napa police say if you recognize your key and had it stolen, give them a call. they ask us all to lock our car doors and take your keys and fobs with you. we told you about a south bay man who fought off a burglar, now we're hearing from the 82-year-old. abc 7 news was in san jose where yousef youkhaneh showed where you say his wife, 76-year-old christina, got attacked sunday night. she was in the backyard of their home when a would be burglar hit her in the head with a big stick. she screamed for her husband who went after the woman. >> i catch him, she hit she was like a tiger. very strong. >> he held the woman until deputies got there. they arrested the suspect identified as rehnu singh. yousef suffered bruises in the tussle and his wife received eight stitches to her head. some pretty dramatic video just came into our live desk.

look at this. a boat catches fire in the middle of the mediterranean sea. you see everyone jump overboard. it's footage captured by the portuguese air force. it's a boat packed with several dozen migrants and you see it got engulfed in flames there and everyone had to jump ship. 34 people were rescued in total. as you may know, there is a migrant problem with hundreds of folks migrating from africa and the middle east into europe so air crews regularly patrol the waters there. this footage though like nothing we've seen before. reggie? smeez ya has been buzzing about the brawl between the washington nationals and the giants and baseball fans and non-baseball fans are talking about this when they get to work following the long weekend. there's a little history between these two. giants pitcher hunter strikeland and bryce harper were yesterday's main combatants and this could have been payback. harper whacked two tape measure home runs off strickland in the

seaworld san diego just unveiled a new orca show and it seems to be missing the mark with some folks. a 2013 documentary criticizing the conditions of captive orcas triggered protests and caused a real dip in attendance. seaworld revamped the show, its aim is to be more educational. protesters over the weekend say it's still not enough. >> imagine if you were taken away from your family and put into this unnatural habitat. how would you feel? seaworld released a statement saying in part their

animals, including the orcas, live happy and healthy lives and thrive in their care and people visiting seaworld san diego will be inspired and educated by air animals and new orca encounter. state safety inspectors are taking a closer look at the dublin water slide where a boy flew off and landed on the concrete below. abc 7 news was in dublin where the inspectors met with manufacturers and contractors following saturday's accident. video shows a 10-year-old boy karineing off the slide during opening day at the wave of emerald glen water park. fortunately he was not speciously hurt. the slide involved in the accident and a second similar one are closed indefinitely. new video shows the moment a driver in china accidentally backed her car into a river. witnesses say the woman was trying to back into a parking spot when suddenly her car sped backward into the water. a good samaritan jumped into the river but he wasn't good at swimming, that's when a second man jumped in saving both the driver and the good samaritan. the woman's car, though, not so

collisions and a few near-misses here where this pedestrian crossing is because people are in a hurry to get from one end to the town to the other and they kind of just go past where the pedestrians are. they have a light that's supposed to blink but it's pretty much ignored. >> getting across the street can be difficult at the best of times because you push the button, the lights come on, nobody stops. >> reporter: some residents have launched a campaign here in town saying slow down in town to raise awareness of the driving behavior through here. seven people were inside the truck, two two were killed, five are in critical condition. reporting live from alameda, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. fremont police are trying to determine how an encounter involving one of their officers escalated into a had soing. it's the department's fourth officer-involved shooting in as many month. it happened near mowry avenue and blacow road. someone flagged down an officer after spotting a man holding a

pipe in a shopping center. officers found him, a chase started and it led to a confrontation. an eyewitness explains what happened next. >> i thought he was pulling out his taser but he pulled out his gun. i said "oh, my god, he just shot him." he shot him three times. the victim was rushed to a nearby trauma center. police haven't released his condition. a pipe was found at the scene and the officer was placed on administrative leave. the oakland city council will vote on a settlement with the woman who says police officers sexually exploited her. jasmine abuslin formerly known as celeste guap sued the city for $66 million. the city attorney is recommending a $1 million settlement. she says she had sex with multiple police officers from several bay area agencies, including when she was underage. criminal charges have been filed against four former and current officers linked to the investigation. 6:33 now. also happening today, a jury resumes deliberation in the trial of three sclanta clara ja

guards charged in the death of an inmate. the three men were guards at the county's main jail in san jose. they're accused of beating mentally ill inmate michael tyree to death in 2018. prosecutors say he was beaten so badly his spleen was neverly severed in half. defense attorneys claim he died when he slipped or fell after climbing on a toilet in his jail cell. the men could face life in prison if convicted of murder. federal investigators focusing on a meeting between the president's son-in-law jared kushner and a russian banker in december. the "new york times" reports the president's senior adviser was looking for a direct line to russian president vladimir putin russian president vladimir putin when he me gork gorkov. they're looking into russia's role between russia and the trump campaign. a protest against a new sanctuary city in texas erupted into a scuffle between lawmakers. the elected officials were seen pushing and shoving one another

the university of california is no longer picking up the cap for its governing board. yesterday we told you the school system was under fire for the uc regents' lavish dinner. one was held in january for $17,600, that was one day before regents voted on increasing tuition. the chronicle reports that the event is charged to a private endowment but janet napolitano says the practice will stop to avoid question over the use of university or university-associated funds. the regents will have to pay for their own dinners. bmw is recalling more than 45,000 older 7-series sedans because the doors can fly open when you're driving. the nationwide recall covers cars from the 2005 through the 2008 model years that have the comfort access and soft door close options. it doesn't have a fix yet. but bmw says it will send letters to customers asking them
