very busy morning here on this wednesday. we're going to start with that breaking news in afghanistan. a deadly explosion going off in what is considered a highly secure part of kabul. it is lined, of course, with foreign embassies. >> afghan officials say a suicide car bomb killed more than 60 people and injured roughly 300. that blast went off in the height of the morning rush in what's considered the city's safest area. >> and you can see some of the early images we're getting, quite a powerful blast that blew out the windows and destroyed more than 50 vehicles. that death toll expected to rise. the nationalities of the victims are not yet known. of course, we're going to continue to stay on top of this breaking news. that explosion in the heart of kabul this morning. and also breaking overnight, a midair scare for jetblue passengers flying from new york to san francisco. the plane forced to divert to grand rapids, michigan, after a passenger's laptop battery caught fire. >> i was stunned. i knew something was going to happen because, you know, lithium batteries catching on fire when you're up at 38,000 feet, you can't help but think

that, you know, we've got to do something. >> a frightening scene there. well, after a three-hour delay, the plane resumed its flight to san francisco where it touched down just moments ago. also breaking overnight a police standoff is finally over after shutting down parts of the orlando airport for nearly three hours. a 26-year-old ex-marine waved a gun at police officers in the car rental area, and police say he also pointed the weapon at his own head and then asked officers to shoot him. luckily neither the police nor the man fired any shots. in fact, it turns out the gun he was holding was fake. police say he was trying to commit suicide by cop. he will now undergo a mental evaluation. developing this morning, kathy griffin apologizing amid the growing outrage over that anti-trump photo that she posted to social media. >> the comedian admits she crossed a line and made a mistake, but her troubles could be far from over now that the secret service is investigating. >> hey, everybody, it's me, kathy griffin. >> reporter: overnight kathy

griffin issuing an apology for this controversial photo shoot of the comedian staring coldly at the camera while holding a fake decapitated head of president trump. she posted it to social media and the backlash online was swift. the president's son, donald trump jr. tweeted, disgusting but not surprising. this is the left today. they consider this acceptable. imagine a conservative did this to obama as potus. the video and images sparked outrage across the political spectrum. chelsea clinton wrote, this is vile and wrong. it is never funny to joke about killing a president. the outrage even reached the secret service and they confirmed it's investigating saying each alleged or perceived threat has to be investigated thoroughly which taxes secret service manpower and resources that could be utilized elsewhere. griffin has been a strong opponent of the president but it appears that wasn't always the case. here she is embracing donald trump three years ago when she was a contestant on "celebrity apprentice." hours after the video surfaced, griffin put out a video apologizing. >> i sincerely apologize.

i'm a comic. i crossed the line. i went way too far. i made a mistake and i was wrong. >> griffin has been a part of cnn's new year's eve special co-hosting with anderson cooper. cooper put out a statement saying he found the display quote disgusting. cnn says they're evaluating their new year's eve coverage. president trump is taking aim at the media yet again as his inner circle comes under more scrutiny. >> just after midnight the president tweeted this unfinished thought writing, despite the constant negative press covfefe. we assume he was trying to write the word coverage. >> everybody has been trying to decipher exactly what he meant in the overnight hours. the post came as lawmakers looking into russian meddling contacted the president's longtime lawyer, and now there's word that michael flynn is now ready to cooperate. abc's kenneth moton has the latest right now from washington. good morning, kenneth. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and diane. no word on covfefe, but things definitely heating up in the russia investigation on capitol hill. the senate intelligence committee gave its power to the

top republican and democrat to issue subpoenas. this morning, trump advisers under the congressional microscope. >> it's going really well. >> reporter: ex-national security adviser michael flynn will now give up some documents in the senate's expanding investigation into russia's election meddling. a source tells abc news a narrow subpoena made it easier for flynn to cooperate without waiving his fifth amendment rights. >> this is michael cohen. >> reporter: the congressional probe also now focused on president trump's confidant and personal attorney michael cohen. cohen told abc news he declined an invite to testify saying the request was poorly phrased, overly broad and not capable of being answered. >> i would say to mr. cohen that we will issue a subpoena, and he will be compelled to come and speak. >> reporter: the senate also wants to question former white house and campaign aide boris epshteyn. >> we love trump. >> reporter: but the president's son-in-law and adviser jared kushner is under increased scrutiny. investigators want to know why he met secretly in december with officials of the new york branch

of a russian bank previously known as a u.s. base for spies. the white house asked if and when they knew kushner was trying to set up back channels with russia before taking office. >> i think that assumes a lot. and i would just say that mr. kushner's attorney has said that mr. kushner has volunteered to share with congress what he knows about these meetings. >> reporter: the white house did not deny kushner tried to set up secret communications only pointing to top administration officials who say back channels are an appropriate part of diplomacy, diane and kendis. >> back to covfefe, the internet is having fun with it. we'll take a look at some of the memes later on, kenneth, thanks. breaking news from syria. russian missiles have hit a target or several isis targets. russia says it fired four missiles from two warships in the eastern mediterranean sea and russian defense officials say those missiles hit heavy weapons and isis fighters near the ancient city of palmyra. the russians say they alerted the u.s. about those strikes. now let's take a look at today's weather.

a cold front is moving through the northeast today bringing a threat of showers and even thunderstorms to western new york and pennsylvania this morning. later today, the front will slide east and bring showers and storms to the northeast around dinnertime. some storms could include lightning and heavy rain. severe storms also pounded san antonio yesterday with nearly 2 1/2 inches of rain falling in 2 1/2 hours. there were at least five high water rescues, but three adult brothers were swept away and still have not been found. ariana grande is getting some high-caliber help with her benefit concert for the victims of the manchester terror attack. >> justin bieber, coldplay and katy perry are just some of the names on a long list of people who will join her on stage. they also include take that, miley cyrus and pharrell williams. >> the concert will take place sunday night in manchester and will raise money for those, of

the water company apparently had been conducting tests and increased the pressure too much. >> quite a scene there. and also seen over the pacific, the u.s. military successfully shooting down a mock long-range ballistic missile for the first time. all of this as north korea poses a growing threat. the critical test of the pentagon's missile defense system involved firing a rocket from vandenberg air force base in california to stop a warhead that was launched some 4,000 miles away. they collided over the pacific ocean as planned, but there's still no guarantee it would work in a real war scenario. a heavily promoed flight from philadelphia to iceland was diverted to boston overnight. the flight was iceland air's first ever from philly to reykjavik, and the mayors of both cities were on board but the pilots noticed an unusual smell and when they couldn't determine what it was, they changed course and landed in boston. there were no other problems or injuries reported. now the first court appearance for the suspect accused of killing two men on a train in portland, oregon. >> death to the enemies of

america. leave this country if you hate our freedom. >> 35-year-old jeremy christian is facing two counts of felony aggravated murder and other charges. he did not enter a plea. christian was confronted by three men after allegedly hurling anti-muslim insults at two young women. now police say christian attacked the men killing two of them and wounding a third. the cleveland police department is taking disciplinary action against the two officers involved in the shooting of tamir rice. one officer is now fired. the other is suspended more than two years after the 12-year-old was shot and killed as he played with a toy gun in a park. now, rice's family settled with the city for $6 million but none of the officers involved face criminal charges. rice's family now says these disciplinary charges don't go far enough. the stock for online retailer amazon opens this morning at nearly a thousand dollars a share and that's good news for founder jeff bezos. if it keeps rising it puts him on track to become the world's richest man. he's worth about $85 billion

rockies. the weather could cause some airport delays in new orleans and new york city. we're learning more this morning about the arrest of tiger woods as dash cam video of the arrest is set to be released today. >> police reports show officers found woods asleep at the wheel. the reports also say woods' mercedes was running with the brake lights on and a blinker on. it was stopped in the roadway with two flat tires and damaged bumpers. woods says he takes multiple prescription drugs following back surgery last month and said he didn't realize the mix of medications had affected him so strongly. a bit of relief this morning for a new jersey family after they were targeted by a brazen car thief. surveillance thief shows a woman pulling into a gas station and leaving it running. as she went inside. look carefully. that's when i a man jumped in and sped off not realizing her baby was in the backseat. you can see the mom yelling for him to stop. the suspect abandoned the vehicle a few blocks away leaving the 1-year-old unharmed. he was reunited with his family and the suspect was actually arrested as well.

a new study is finding rampant sticker shock for emergency room patients. researchers at johns hopkins say e.r. rooms have been jacking up prices by as much as 1300% and they found that on average, adult patients are charged 340% more than what medicare pays for everything from stitches to ct scans, and the biggest markups are often made to minorities and uninsured patients. two major league baseball players are looking at suspensions this morning after that major brawl in monday night's nationals/giants baseball game. >> yeah, san francisco pitcher hunter strickland will miss six games for intentionally throwing at washington's bryce harper. now, harper will sit out four games for charging the mound. both players, though, are appealing. >> and those appeals mean that harper was on the field last night. >> he didn't do so well, though. we'll get the latest on the baseball highlights now from espn. good morning, america. he's stan. i'm neil. we got a couple baseball highlights. no fighting.
