now. sky 7 is over the breaking news on the peninsula where sheriff's deputies are investigating a stabbing at a library in millbrae. witnesses tell us the victim is a middle school-aged child. the sheriff's office has evacuated the library as they investigate the incident. a witness inside said the victim ran into the library bleeding profusely. the boy ran into the bathroom and that's when other people called 911. the victim is now at the hospital. we do not know his condition. one woman tells us she was asked to leave when she came to check out a book. >> every day there is something and it's just appalling, it really is. it makes you frightened for your children. makes you frightened for yourself. >> it's not clear whether the suspect has been caught. we are going to bring you more information as soon as we have it here on abc7 news and on the abc7 news app. >> now to developing news in the ghost ship fire tragedy. today we heard from the attorneys representing ghost ship founder derek almena and from almena's wife. >> and another man max harris

aspirations. >> the prosecution is really brought for the private benefit for the district attorney and as a shield and a sword for the sheriffs, for the pg&e, for the building inspectors who are the real culpable parties. >> in e-mail statements, the spokesperson for the district attorney's office writes, our ethical duty of prosecutors is to analyze the facts and apply the law to those facts. filing criminal charges only when there is proof beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant committed the crime. while a spokesperson for pg&e writes, we've seen no evidence to date that would lead us to believe that our facilities were the cause of the fire. almena and harris are scheduled to be in court next week. almena's attorneys say his plea will be not guilty. in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc7 news. >> new at 4:00, a woman accused of abandoning a child she tossed out of the car made her first

court appearance this afternoon. the incident happened monday evening near the san francisco zoo. 22-year-old samantha paton pleaded not guilty today to child endangerment charges. prosecutors says paton yelled get out, and i don't want to be your mommy any more to her 5-year-old daughter. the child hit her head on the pavement. four years ago paton was investigated for child cruelty. >> a man who was shot earlier this week after being accused of trying to run over a san leandro police officer has been charged with two felonies. 40-year-old hayward resident steven england was wounded in the early morning incident on saint may's avenue. he is in the hospital in stable condition. investigators say england sped towards an officer who tried pulling him over, trying to hit him. england has been charged with auto theft and assault on a police officer. the officer who shot england was not hurt. well, this afternoon the woman accused of putting meth in a 2-year-old's mouth remains in segregated custody for mother inmates at the alameda county jail because she assaulted a sheriff's deputy.

the alameda county sheriff apps spokesperson said as deputies were booking her into the jail tuesday, she attacked the face of a female sheriff's deputy. that deputy is okay. thomas is no stranger to law enforcement. >> we have a long history with ms. thomas over the last several years. this isn't the first time that she's a ultimassaulted our staf members. we encountered her inner 2014 where three deputies were injured as a result of an encounter they had with her. >> thomas is facing attempted murder charges for monday's incident at people's park in berkeley. alameda county sheriffs have also filed a complaint against her for assaulting a deputy. >> now to the latest reaction to testimony by former fbi director james comey. >> yes. president trump made his first public comments today about the testimony before the senate intelligence committee. >> abc reporter janai washington joins us from washington.

there are brooms in the studio. getting ready for a sweep. all right, dan, alma? >> we've gone t got push brooms, wisk brooms, all of it. thanks very much. >> we want to get back to breaking news we've been following on the peninsula where a young boy has been found stabbed at a library in millbrae. >> let's show you where it is. abc7 news reporter melanie woodrow has arrived on the scene where she's learned new information for us today. melanie? >> reporter: dan and alma, you can see a few of those investigators over my shoulder still very much in active scene. here is the good news if any, the boy stabbed in both of his arms has been taken to a local hospital. he is expected to survive those injuries. and the suspect has been arrested. we do have some updates for you. san mateo county sheriff's office is now saying that this was a 13-year-old boy, again, who was stabbed in both of his arms. they say with a pocket knife. the suspect who has already been arrested is a 40-year-old transient. now, there is a reason sheriffs

deputies were able to arrive on scene so quickly to make that arrest. they say just within 20 seconds, that's because they have a substation next door. the stabbing happened outside of the library and what you saw was a public plaza area. witnesses say that the boy ran into the library bathroom. he was bleeding excessively and that's when people of course who were inside the library saw him and called 911. there were certainly a lot of children here that were in this library. their parents came to pick them up and they say they were frightened. >> we need to be more vigilant obviously, and you know, just keep more tabs with your kids as to what's going on throughout the day. >> i've been in millbrae for 61 years. and there's been some things, but like this here is just too much. >> reporter: so, again, lots of investigators outside of this library that will remain closed as they conduct a thorough investigation.

we see that a forensics van has pulled up here a short time ago after we arrived. but obviously an active crime scene. the suspect has been arrested, a 40-year-old person they are referring to as a transient. the 14-year-old boy stabbed in both of his arms is in the hospital and expected to su viechl his injuries. live in millbrae, melanie woodrow, abc7 news. >> melanie, thank you for that update. this weekend a national organization known to have antimuslim views will be hosting a march against sharia law in the south bay. it is more than one of two dozen similar events happening nationwide. local inter faith leaders say it has no place in their community. abc7 news reporter chris nguyen has more on the controversy and how they plan to respond. >> reporter: on one of the busiest roads in santa clara, two protests, two very different views. both will meet face to face on saturday. >> we don't anticipate any problems, but we certainly want to keep the peace and protect everyone's first amendment right. >> reporter: act for america, a

chevron deployed its emergency response team and quickly contained that material. the investigation shows chevron is not the source of that material. and we have some sad news about a goat in the herd that was trapped by a wildfire in milpitas last month. we showed you these pictures. today we found out charlie the baby goat passed away unfortunately. you may remember the really moving video from sky 7 showing the goats trying to escape the flames. they were trapped between the fire and a fence. all but one of the goats made it out of the fire and then today charlie died. it's especially disappointing for his care givers who said he'd started showing signs of recovery this week. >> well, you're looking at the view from the newest attraction at the oakland zoo. the zoo's gondola opened today. zoo visitors can ride it to a restaurant. that restaurant opens monday. next year the gondola will transport people to a new california trail exhibit that is currently under construction. that exhibit will feature animals native to california including grizzly bears.

inches is a warrior in every since of the word. >> here he is. the one and only. >> reporter: darrell akins arrived to a hero's we will exum and said he's amazed. >> to pass, the start that i lost. >> reporter: the former football player hasn't been to school in a while. in fact, he was told this day might never come. >> it's like a dream come true. >> reporter: akins has leukemia. even after a bone marrow transplant last spring, doctors told him he had only months to live. >> they said he wouldn't be here and he's here. >> i got something to prove. >> reporter: akins is not a quitter. >> when they count him out, he keeps going. >> reporter: but he's also profrming something else. at a school where attendance and graduation rates are falling, he's defying the odds, both medically and academically. >> just to graduate, as an african-american male is huge. the city of oakland has been trying to make those things better. darrell is one of the ones who made it.
