were quiet would clear you. >> when it comes down to who is telling the truth and who is not. most people would side reasonably with james comey. >> reporter: the former u.s. attorney for new york can rel e relate. he was also fired by trump back in march. and says he also had some awkward encounters with the president. including repeated phone calls from trump starting even before he took office. >> it was a little uncomfortable. he was not the president. he was president elect. >> reporter: that changed when trump called again in march. this time as president. >> we deliberated over it. thought it was inappropriate to return the call. 22 hours later asked to resign. >> reporter: this week attorney general jeff sessions will be in the hot seat. set to testify in front of the same panel as comey. sessions already recused himself from the russia investigation. >> i should not be involved investigating a campaign i had a role in. >> reporter: comey hinted there were other reasons. >> we also were aware of facts that i can't discuss in an open setting.

>> reporter: sessions says it is important that i have an opportunity to address these matters. mary bruce, abc news, new jersey. >> a note from the white house here. the chief of staff, reince priebus, well his job may be on the line. sources tell that president trump threatened to fire him if he doesn't clean up embattled white house by the fourth of july. not a lot of time. speculation of possible shake-up intensified. sources are skeptical the president will make the changes and the white house has denied that priebus is in jeopardy. oversea's france's first round parliamentary election is handing president macron a victory. the on the move party won by large margin with 28% of the votes. in a stinging upset to parties that monopolized power for decades. the conservative republicans got just 16% of the votes. and the far right national front, party of marie le pen lost to macron in the run-off election.

that party only got 14% of the votes. despite calls for resignation, theresa may insisting she is staying put. her conservative party won the biggest share of seats in last week's parliamentary election but lost their majority in the house of commons. throwing her government into more uncertainty less than two weeks before scheduled to begin negotiations over withdrawing from the european union. frightening incident on a flight in australia. take a look at the problem. that huge hole in the engine of a china eastern airlines plane. the jet was supposed to be flying from sydney to shanghai. 30 minutes into the flight. everyone on board heard a loud noise and smelled something burning. that's when passengers starting getting very concerned. >> i hear the noise. and i am not sure what is the noise. but the -- the cabin crew went out and they were very like, they told us to fasten our seatbelt and they tried to calm us down. but we were actually very panicked because we had no idea

what is happening. >> understandably, moments later an emergency was declared. the pilots had to fly for another half-hour before landing back in sydney. investigators are looking into what caused a problem. no one on board was injured. closing arguments could begin in bill cosby's sexual assault trial. the prosecution rested its case friday against the 79-year-old actor. accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a woman more than a decade ago. the jury heard from her and another woman who told similar stories. cosby's attorney insists contact was consensual and it is not clear if cosby will testify. uber looking to take steps tee restore its tainted image. ride share company board met to discuss possible leave of absence for the ceo. uber under fire for corporate culture and allegations of sexual harassment and word that its chief business officer will resign as early as today.

release them? >> the president said he is going to address the issue of the tapes whether the tapes exist or not next week. that is a decision that the president will make. >> now the attorney general, jeff sessions headed for the congressional hot seat. set to testify before the senate intelligence committee tuesday. lawmakers are likely to press him on his meetings with the russian ambassador during the campaign. and whether he played any role in comey's firing, even after he recused himself from the russian investigation. mary bruce, abc news, bedminister, new jersey. >> we'll be watching yet again another busy week in washington. and a somber day ahead in orlando as the city remembers the 49 people killed exactly one year ago at the pulse nightclub. first of four events already playing out in the early morning hours this morning. a private service at the nightclub for survivors including a reading of the names of the victims. then later today two more services at the nightclub as well as an evening gathering in downtown orlando. a live report from orlando in the next half-hour. meanwhile, the pentagon launched a deadly air strike on islamic extremists in somalia.

the military says an unmanned drone killed at least eight members of al qaeda affiliate. the air strike was the first conducted under new authority from president trump to carry out precision strikes in the area and support of somali forces. three american soldiers killed over the weekend in afghanistan. those troops were on a mission to support u.s. special forces. when an afghan soldier turned his gun on them. that afghan soldier also died and the pentagon is now investigating. insider attacks in afghanistan have been blamed for the deaths of more than 150 coalition forces over the past decade. here at home investigations under way into two separate home explosions. this home in new jersey was blown to pieces in an early morning blast. it was so powerful, it knocked out power to nearly 2,000 people living nearby. the homeowners hospitalized in critical condition with second degree burns. >> it was charred. it looked like projectiles him hit him in the face. it was bad. >> louder than thunder. something i have never heard before.

my whole body, and my arm, i saw it, saw it, it was shaking. >> it's completely understandable. the other house explosion, this one near chicago damaging 50 other surrounding homes. the homeowners were reportedly out of town at the time of the blast. two people in neighboring home though suffered minor burns. gas leaks expected in both of the blasts. >> scary stuff. to florida now. this was one of two sink holes that opened up over the weekend, in ocala, swallowing up a car. the car looks like a toy compared to the hole. no injuries reported. a city official says it appears that lime rock under the parking lot drainage system eroded causing the pavement to collapse. puerto rico voted overwhelmingly to become the 51st state. there is a catch. >> what? >> yesterday, 97% of voters said yes to statehood. turnout was 23%. the island's worst turn out in 50 years. now, statehood opponents are saying the low turnout should invalidate the result because they claim it doesn't accurately

other guests are here for a private remembrance ceremony this morning. and just a few minutes right now at 2:02 eastern time, the names of 49 victims will be read marking the moments the first shots were fired. 364 days later and for some it feels like not a day has passed. >> she cries every night. every single night. like i said it is just like it just happened just now. >> reporter: stepfather of 23-year-old stanley almodovar, iii, one of countless visitors stopping by the memorial the day before the one year anniversary. the night his life and so many others changed forever. >> they won't be forgotten. >> reporter: the morning of june 12th shortly before close investigators say omar mateen walked into pulse nightclub and opened fire. >> shooting back and fort. >> reporter: he took hostages inside leading to a nearly three hour standoff as police officers and s.w.a.t teams worked to rescue survivors.

>> one man with two guns, an assault rifle and a handgun. there was clearly a difference. and those that were shot, the injuries, the extent of the injuries of those that were shot with the assault weapon versus the handgun. >> reporter: almost a year later, the images of the early morning and the emotions in orlando are still raw. but some in the community see a silver lining. an outpouring of love spawned from an act of so much hate. >> even though it's devastating, i think there are a lot of beautiful things that come from this. changed the way people view the gay community and gay people in general. >> and the city of orlando has a full day of events planned to honor the more than 50 survivors and those 49 lives lost here last june. kendis, diane. >> yes, the city of orlando tweeting -- one year later and every day we remember the 49. no doubt do. janai, thank you. we should point out far from

orlando some 29 survivors of the pulse nightclub shooting turned out this weekend for boston's gay pride parade. >> i was there. survivor's float adorned with 49 flags as survivors carried the events official 60 foot pride flag, joining more than 300 other organizations taking part in that parade. such an amazing moment. energy from the crowd impossible to describe. an amazing moment. >> received such a rousing, rousing welcome there from boston and understandably so. there are pride celebrations all across the country and it's quite a difference from the pride celebrations last year in the wake of the pulse nightclub massacre. very good. >> we will move on now into other stories. other major headlines. attorney general jeff sessions is set to testify tomorrow before the senate intelligence committee. >> sessions is expected to be questioned about his contacts with russia the firing of former fbi director, james comey. not yet known if the testimony will take place behind closed

doors, but senate democrats are calling for a public hearing. meanwhile, members of both parties are demanding the white house turn over any tapes of the president's conversations with comey that may exist. a member of the president's legal team offered no clues about the alleged tapes. >> the president said he is going to address the issue of the tapes, whether the tapes exist or not next week. that is a decision the president will make. >> republican senator susan collins says she doesn't understand why the president wouldn't just clear up that matter. she says she will support a subpoena to get alleged recordings if necessary. president trump is facing a major lawsuit stemming from his business dealings. the attorneys general for washington, d.c., and the state of maryland, have accused the president of violating anticorruption causes in the constitution. now, get this according to "the washington post," the suit to be announced later today says the president accepted millions of payments and benefits from foreign governments since taking office. the case is expected to renew calls for the president to release his own tax returns. want to return to what i was mentioning.

the supporters of the lgbt rights who were out in force over the weekend. los angeles renamed its pride parade, the resist march and attracted 30,000 people, politicians and celebrities, joined the call to resist the vision and march for diversity. quite a scene there in l.a. there were about 100 pride marches across the country including an event in washington, d.c. that parade passed the white house. many marchers are angry at president trump accusing him of stocking his cabinet with enemies of lgbt rights. a judge will decide if there is enough evidence to go to trial in the penn state hazing death case. timothy piazza died in february falling several times in a fraternal team house after a night of heavy drinking. 18 members of the fraternity face hundreds of charges. eight are accused of involuntary manslaughter. surveillance shows it took more than 12 hours to call 911 after piazza took a fall down a flight

of stairs. closing arguments could be delivered in bill cosby's sex assault trial. prosecutors rested their case on friday. not known if the 79-year-old will testify. last week the jury heard from his accuser adrian constand and another woman, both claimed the actor drugged and sexually assaulted them. the defense insists that cosby and constant had a consensual relationship. someone is getting a big check today courtesy of saturday's powerball jackpot victory. sun city is home to the only winning ticket for the $447 million prize. now the winner has not come forward. but the deli owner who sold the ticket gets $1 million. saturday's jackpot, the seventh largest in powerball history. >> pretty nice. >> i know. -- cousin. uncle. much of the nation seeing a lot of red today. look at that. on the thermometer. nearly everywhere, east of the rockies baking in temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s. amarillo, texas, 99, washington, d.c. heating up to 95.

look him who actually committed that crime. >> this is an absolutely amazing story. abc's ron claiborne. >> reporter: this was it, jubilation as richard jones is set free after spending 17 years in prison for a crime he insisted all along he never committed. >> i didn't get excited until i walked out of jail. that feeling was surreal. my granddaughter was there. and my daughter. >> reporter: jones' nightmare began in 2000 with an aggravated robbery for a purse snatching at wal-mart parking lot in kansas city, kansas. several witnesses picked his photo from this group of six. the defense presented alibi witnesses, relatives, and his then girlfriend, who said jones was at home at the time. but he was convicted. >> law enforcement didn't spend a lot of time trying to solve this crime. once they had mr. jones picked out that was enough for them.

>> reporter: all of jones' appeals went nowhere until he contacted the innocence project which discovered another man who had done time in the same jail, richard amos who practically looks like jones' twin. amos on the left. jones on the right. >> once i seen the picture of this man, you know, like i understood why people were saying what they were saying. like it made sense to me. >> reporter: the similarities in appearance and lack of any hard evidence outside of witness testimony was enough off to get a judge to toss out jones' case. >> i never gave up hope. >> reporter: jones is not bitter, when he saw the resemblance, he understood it was all a mistake not a matter of witnesses at the trial trying to pin on him a crime he did not commit. ron claiborne, abc news, new york. >> it is unbelievable looking at the two photos. >> insane. so, volunteers set up a gofundme page to help jones get on his feet. been 17 years. raised more than $8,000.
