on thursday. we want to get to some developing news out of castro valley. that's where alameda county sheriff's deputies are looking into a possible bird mill behind a home. they flew above the home a short time ago. deputies say there are about 500 exotic parrots, mckaus, kept in cages. neighbors complained about noises and odors for several weeks. deputies say the birds will likely stay there for now. tonight uber's ceo said he's taking an indefinite leave of absence as the company takes steps to improve its culture. the report was outlining the changes the company should undergo. tiffany wilson is outside uber headquarters with the new developments. tiffany? >> reporter: in company e-mails, the ceo said today should be the turning point toward a more inclusive uber. uber 2.0. he says he needs to take time off to work on himself, so he can be the leader the company

an outpouring of support tonight for a vietnam purple heart veteran who lost his homes to foreclosure. >> michael finney is here with an update on the story. >> what an outpouring. the san mateo county district attorney's office and adult

protective services have begun to look into the case. unfortunately, that won't be enough to save the family's home. >> give me a minute. >> as much as he tries, it's tough to move on for robert. emotions are still raw, just hours after the family gave up the keys to their longtime home in san mateo. robert paid some $20,000 to help save his family's home. he says none of what he spent that money on was helpful. despite all that, this cancer patient remains thankful after publicizing his fight on abc 7 news. his daughter, leeanna, tell us what happened after the story aired. >> we started getting calls right away. >> reporter: the family received both financial assistance and help with the move. a former neighbor called to rent this duplex minutes from the family's old home. robert's wife, delores, is overwhelmed by the generosity.

>> we have so many good friends, and so many good neighbors. >> reporter: others suggested the family pursue criminal and civil action. "7 on your side" put them in touch with adult protective services, the agency is working with the district attorney on possible criminal action. >> certainly we're looking at them for criminal fraud, real estate fraud, elder abuse, and whether there has been any consumer fraud. >> reporter: at the beginning of the day, the family was hopeful authorities could obtain an emergency order to stay the foreclosure. the d.a. said unfortunately, it's much too late for that. robert regrets he didn't reach out for help earlier. his grandson said it's not his grampa's fault. he will buy the home back. >> i want the memories back from there. >> reporter: the family says they're ready to move on. they still have their dog, buddy, and they have each other. >> with my family, anyplace feels like home.

didn't even show up. i don't know what i can say, you know, other than that. it was dismissed and i'm very grateful. eating is banned on most public transit in san francisco. but police rarely enforce the law. highway 140 is still closed in yosemite national park after a 4,000-ton rock slide. park officials say 150 feet of the road at the arch rock entrance to the park is covered in up to 15, maybe as much as 20 feet of debris. that's the highway 140 entrance into yosemite. anyone trying to get into the park will have to take highway 41 through oakhurst. we are about to warm up around here. >> big-time. spencer christian is tracking it for us. >> we're about to have a summer-like heat wave during the last days of spring. let's use antioch as an example of how much it will rise in the next couple of days, around 88 degrees in antioch.

we have new details tonight on an incredibly close call at a belmont elementary school yesterday. >> the district attorney says a nanny charged with dui after crashing her car through a school fence has faced similar charges before. >> melanie woodrow has more. >> reporter: belmont police arrested this 64-year-old nanny for child endangerment after she drove into a fence outside an

elementary school on monday. the damaged fence had a yellow sign that says, drive safely and slowly. it's a reminder to parents of the incident that could have been even worse. >> she could have hit anybody that was on the sidewalk. i walk past here. it could have been me, it could have been any one of the kids. >> reporter: police say the nanny had an infant in her car and was on her way to pick up another child when she drove into the fence. the infant was not hurt. but an 11-year-old student outside was hurt. his parent said their son who was in the boy's class saw the accident. >> he was coming up the stairs. he heard the crash. and he looked and saw the car going down into the grass area. he was frightened. >> reporter: cipriani's principal said the 11-year-old has minor injuries, and is recovering at home. the nanny is now out of jail. san mateo county district attorney -- >> she's somebody we've dealt with on a prior occasion for the

same offense, misdemeanor drunk driving. >> reporter: she pleaded no contest to the charges in may of 2015 and received a sentence of three years probation and two days in jail. the d.a.'s office said she'll be arraigned on these latest charges in july. abc 7 news. a man accused of stabbing a boy outside a mill bray library shouldn't have been out on the street. he was in court today on charges in connection with last friday's attack. he remains in custody without bail. nelson has five prior arrests in san mateo county on drug charges. he has mental health issues and was a free man at the time of the stabbing because of proposition 47 which downgraded certain crimes to misdemeanors. >> very definite possibility he would have been in custody at the time of this, rather than wandering the streets of millbray. >> the 13-year-old victim suffered seven stab wounds and will need further surgery.

officials sent a letter to students' parents that reads in part, we are discussing the incident in the context of full safety and how to further protect our students out in the world. african-american leaders in the south bay are blasting administrators of monte vista high school and sheriff's office after claims they failed to take action following the discovery of a racist hit list last fall. vic lee is in cupertino with the new developments. >> if we allow this to happen to one community, we allow it to happen to everyone. >> you're talking about killing people in school. killing people. do you understand? >> step up and talk to your children about this. because this is wrong. >> we will not put up with this any longer. >> reporter: african-american community leaders charged the high school in cupertino, the fremont high school district and

sheriff failed to act appropriately in the wake of the hit list scandal, posted on social media last fall targeting black students. >> on that list were the names of six to seven african-american students in school. >> reporter: attorney richard richardson filed suit on behalf of one of the students who has since left the school. >> they gave us a specific credible threat, and talked about how many bullets it would take. >> reporter: the hit list was reportedly not the only act of racism. two months ago this was also posted on instagram. a message that used the word lynch, and the "n" word. richardson says the students were not punished. >> there was no discipline such as detention, such as suspension or expulsion ever considered. >> reporter: the school district says it investigated the incident in september and took appropriate disciplinary action. the sheriff's office says it referred the case to the d.a. for criminal prosecution. >> we have learned through a

are waiting to hear tomorrow where they'll spend the summer working. >> they went to interviews today for paid tech internships, and employers say they're pretty impressed by the skill set these stuptsd have. >> david louie has our story. >> reporter: they've shown up with their resumes. most are only 17 for paid internships at over 100 silicon valley companies. how nervous are you right now? >> i'm a bit nervous. >> you have been preparing for this? >> yeah. i went through a few classes on internships and resume writing. >> reporter: they come from four south bay districts. the internship program is in its second year, a partnership of the schools to public groups, and the silicon valley organization. >> they come in with a different set of skills. you've got to find the activities that meet those skills. and then challenge them. >> reporter: ahmed was one of 41 students who got an internship
