the guy shot is he okay. >> we didn't know where the shots were coming from. it was loud. it was constant. you just, wonder, when it is going to stop. >> i saw the gunman -- come around, to the back stop. and he had hey clear line of fire into the -- into the dugout. >> within three minutes. police officers arrived at the scene. >> you need a second helicopter. >> we will have another one. >> with the gunman disarmed, scalise's colleague s their clothes and look for the wound and make sure you stop the bleeding. >> representative scalise was transported to medstar where he underwent surgery for the gunshot wound. the suspect was transferred to george washington university hospital where he later died. >> the d.c. medical examiner has issued the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds to the

torso. >> reporter: dan harris, abc news, new york. >> now major focus of the fbi investigation its the gunman's social media posts. he once called president trump a traitor online. said the president had destroyed our democracy. >> james hodgkinson belonged to a facebook group called terminate the republican party. history of run ins with the law including an incident at his home two months ago at his home in illinois. neighbors called police as hodgkinson was firing dozens of shots. >> i said, hey, what the hell are you doing? stop the shooting there is houses over there. anyway, then there was some more shots. i said i am going to call the sheriff. and report him. he is not stopping. >> well he did get away with a warning after that incident. >> hodgkinson also volunteered for bernie sanders presidential campaign last year. sanders was quick to denounce hodgkinson in a senate speech after the attack.

more about the suspected gunman james hoodgkinson whose life was apparently starting to unravel. >> the shooter has been living out of his vehicle. >> reporter: he left for alexandria, virginia, two months ago without work. president trump visiting the hospital wednesday night. just before the shooting began, one congressman was approached by a stranger. now believed to be hodgkinson. >> i did have an interaction with someone in the parking lot who asked me if the team practicing was a democrat or republican team. i said they were republicans and he said, okay, thanks. >> reporter: moments later, congressman scalise hit on second. rand paul ducking behind a tree. >> we had no arms. all we had was bats. >> reporter: others scurrying to the dugout capitol hill police on the scene returned fire. >> not only chaotic, but a combat situation. >> reporter: representative joe barton 10-year-old's son, jack,

was on the field. members tried to protect him in the dugout. >> everybody out there was looking out for him, not just me. >> reporter: partisanship cast aside in shared disbelief. >> we are united in our shock. we are united in our anguish and an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us. >> reporter: amid calls to dial back on some of the tense rhetoric that we heard coming out of washington, there is signs of solidarity and strength. one of those that congressional baseball game that was scheduled for tonight will, in fact, continue raising money for charity, undeterred with one slight edit. instead of republicans and democrats wearing their own uniforms, everybody will be wearing the same uniforms tonight. lsu in honor of congressman scalise. >> of course, he is from louisiana. the president was supposed to attend that baseball game, but because of security reasons, he is not. he had offered measured words in response to the shooting

denouncing it as a brutal assault. >> after sitting by scalise's bed side he tweeted he is in tough shape but is a real fighter. the president issued the nation from the white house and issued a call for unity. >> we may have our differences, but we do well in times like these to remember that everyone who serves in our nation's capital is here because, above all, they love our country. we could all agree that we are blessed to be americans. that our children deserve to grow up in safety and peace. >> the president also praised the capital police officers who were injured. if it weren't for their heroic actions, many lives would have been lost. >> the police were at the park to protect scalise who gets a security detail because of his position as the third highest ranking republican in the house.

details about the others injured in the attack. matt mika is a lobbyist shot multitle times and also in critical condition. >> zach barth was texting for help during the incident. he's already out of the hospital. u.s. capital police officer crystal griner was shot in the ankle and david bailey treated for minor injuries. both officers are expected to make a full recovery and being hailed as heroes this morning. >> wonderful that they were there and able to act as quickly as they did. now, of course, in addition to examining exactly what happened we're also examining every aspect of the gunman's life. at least investigators are. now, part of that investigation involves his social media's posts. >> the fbi is paying attention to his postings against president trump and republicans in general. here is abc's pierre thomas. >> reporter: police racing to

the home james hodgkinson. the desperate search for clues about the would-be mass murder killed in a shootout with police. no one knew would explode into a barrage of gunfire. in the 66-year-old's home town in southwestern illinois. shock. >> he was in a few fights and stuff like that, but nothing that would demonstrate violence as far as what he did. >> reporter: the fbi focused on these posts a deep hatred for republicans even calling president trump a traitor. trump has destroyed our democracy. it is time to destroy trump and company. he posted a cartoon critical of steve scalise who he allegedly shot. he joined facebook groups. including one dubbed terminate the republican party. his now removed facebook page showing support for vermont senator confirming hodgkinson volunteered for the campaign.

>> the alleged shooter at the republican baseball practice this morning is someone who apparently volunteered on my presidential campaign. i am sickened by this despicable act. >> reporter: he had no love for hillary clinton either. posting a nomination for hillary equals a win for trump. but there were run ins with the law. a history of petty violations and hints that violence could be coming. in april 2006, police responded to a domestic incident in which hodgkinson was accused of striking a woman and hitting a neighbor in the face with a shotgun. the misdemeanor charges were later dropped. two months ago police were called to his illinois home after neighbors complained about shots being fired. >> i said i'm going to call the sheriff and report him. i'm not stopping. >> reporter: he was only given a warning. his life was apparently starting to unravel. he left for alexandria, virginia, two months ago. without work, living out of a

gym bag. >> we believe that the shooter was living out of his vehicle. >> reporter: he would stop by this bar about eight blocks from the shooting sight. >> i remember him being extremely quiet. didn't really make eye contact and then would be staring, you know, when i was looking away or looking out the window a lot. >> at this point, do they believe he acted alone? but they want to be absolutely certain. nothing will be left to chance. peaire thomas. >> some members of congress are now reporting death threats after the shooting. and that's now prompting a whole debate over security on capitol hill and for lawmakers there and to what degree we should be going to protect our lawmakers. >> many members of the congressional black caucus among others who went to speaker ryan just a few weeks ago to express their concern about their own safety. and it's something that is going to be reexamined right now. when you think about it. these town halls and all these

different events that our congressional people go to that are open to the public. no sort of security there, no security details. it's shocking that this has not happened before other than gabby giffords incident from 2011. >> even in the midst of the debate the question of what exactly that means is up for debate. some say they need the security detail like the whip had in this case. which is the only reason this gunman was taken down so quickly. others are saying they need to be armed wherever they live. >> i used to live across the street from nancy pelosi in washington, d.c., and i remember jogging on the path and walking behind her and she was walking and had a security detail that was there just a couple steps behind. >> it's the others in congress that are now thinking maybe they need some security, as well. >> absolutely. we will have more from washington later this half hour and live updates on "good morning america." another mass shooting in this country specifically in san francisco. three u.p.s. workers are dead, shot by a fellow driver. 38-year-old jimmy lamb went into

the morning meeting there and opened fire. a union official said he had filed a grievance in march complaining he was working too much overtime. police sources also say he had a history of mental health problems, but no word on exactly what might have set him off. two other u.p.s. drivers were also injured. president trump now reportedly under investigation for possible obstruction of justice. "the washington post" says robert mueller is trying to determine if the president interfered with the probe into russian election meddling. sources tell the paper the investigation of the president started days after he fired fbi director james comey. they say mueller is preparing to interview director of national intelligence dan coats. the president had reportedly asked them both to publicly deny any collusion and he allegedly wanted coates to get comey to back off the michael flynn investigation. the president's attorney said the leak of information is

members of congress racing for cover as police then engaged the gunman in a shootout. >> here is some of what the people in the park saw and heard. [ gunfire ] [ gunshots ] >> everybody get down!

[ gunfire ] >> that was video captured by a man who happened to be walking his dog at the time. it is just unbelievable how long it goes on for. >> yeah. just so you know that was about a minute and a half that we, we played out there. it is longer than that. it just gives you a sense of how long that, that, that encounter was. couple of thoughts about it. you can hear the man breathing heavily. and then you see all the folks scurrying around. imagining how trapped the congressional members might have felt. >> you can hear, police officers saying put the gun down.

put the gun down. hearing all the shots. means the gunman is still armed at the time after all the shots fired. investigators are now looking into every aspect of that gunman james hodgkinson's life. the 66-year-old home inspector had not been working recently. >> his social media posts demonstrated hatred for republicans. hodgkinson once called president trump a traitor online. and belonged to a facebook group called terminate the republican party. the fbi believes he had been in the washington area since march. and was living out of a van. he was familiar to the staff at a bar a few blocks away from the shooting scene. >> he would come in and -- watch golf a lot. middle of the day, typically. and he would always come in by himself. the first time i met him he was a little bit odd. he would -- just sit there by himself real quiet. struck me as a very introverted

person. and, rubbed me the wrong way. >> hodgkinson had a series of run ins with the law. two months ago he received a warning from police at his home in illinois after neighbors complained about him firing dozens of shots. >> despite at take. the house will be in session. >> victims who were wounded are starting their long recovery journey. mary bruce tells us more about them. >> reporter: congressman, steve scalise was looking forward to the big game. >> couldn't make my high school team. kind of bloomed later in life. >> reporter: the louisiana lawmaker a proud ragin calling his wife before surgery. also hit, zach barth, congressional aide, posting he was in the hospital but okay. lobbyist matt mika one of the team's coaches shot in the chest. in critical condition. and those two heroic officers, crystal griner shot in the ankle. david bailey, nine year veteran

attack on all of us. >> reporter: that congressional baseball game will go on tonight. that show of unity extending to the baseball diamond here in washington. democrats and republicans feeling it sends a strong message that americans will not back down to fear. one republican who was on the field explained it, we all agree, we need to play ball. mary bruce, abc news, capitol hill. and the democratic baseball team did more than just pray for their republican colleagues. >> they invited members of the republican team to have dinner with them last night. louisiana democrat, cedric richmond brought crawfish in honor of scalise from louisiana the two are good friends. the republican team manager, joe barton of texas called the dinner invitation a gracious and generous offer. >> this baseball game tonight at nationals park in d.c., one that goes back for more than century. first one in 1909. and at that time they said it

had been brewing for weeks. looking back at some old photos of them in their republican and democratic outfits. classic 1909. you would imagine. >> these are the moments we often don't see in washington. we look at division, all the heated moments. all the rhetoric, we often don't see the fun moments where people from both parties come together. and just enjoy something as simple as a good baseball game. in this case, of course the game is going to take on so much more meaning. instead of the usual tradition to wear opposing uniforms as most baseball teams do. they will be wearing the same uniform in an effort to show unity. >> lsu. all right. we'll be tracking all the latest developments in the changing story with updates throughout the morning. special counsel investigating russian interference in the election reportedly looking into whether president trump tried to obstruct justice. sources tell "the washington post" robert mueller is planning to interview the director of national intelligence and head of the nsa following reports that the president had asked

them to intervene in the russia probe. abc's cecelia vega has more. >> reporter: yeah, this report says essentially president trump is now part of this investigation personally. that they're looking into, possible obstruction of justice of course former fbi director james comey just recently testified he told the president he was not personally part of the investigation. under his tenure. this seems to have changed. we did get a statement from the president's legal team. they're calling this a leak that is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal. >> thank you. robert mueller was on capitol hill yesterday. meeting with the leaders of the senate intelligence committee. aides say they want to make sure that their parallel investigations on russian interference and possible collusion with the trump campaign don't interfere with one another. u.p.s. driver in san francisco killed three of his co-workers before turning the gun on himself. jimmy lamb burst into morning meeting before drivers left to make deliveries. and then opened fire. two other drivers were injured. a union official says lamb had filed grievance earlier this

year. complaining that he was working too much overtime. but sources say, lamb was a loner who had mental health issues and was estranged from his wife. authorities in london are monitoring stability on a high rise apartment tower almost completely scorched. the death toll is up to at least 12 people. officials say that number is all but certain to rise. more than 70 other people have been treated for injuries. churches and mosques near the building providing services for residents who escaped with virtually nothing but what they were wearing. the landlord of the building says they're cooperating with fire investigators. we have video to show you now of a special save involving a boy and his dog. >> 2-year-old boy and puppy were strapped in a steaming hot car in new jersey. the toddler's grandmother accidentally locked them inside. you can see, pair of state troop ears rife on the scene. and they tell grandma, smash the window. >> she did. and they got the boy. and his puppy. everyone is okay.
