good morning, everyone, on this busy thursday. unity on capitol hill after that shocking attack on members of congress leaving them running for their lives. >> republican lawmaker steve scalise was among several people shot. he remains in critical condition this morning as he's facing more surgeries. >> he did get a visit last night from president trump and the first lady, and the president called him a real fighter. investigators are still gathering information on the gunman who died in a shoot-out with police. they say he had repeatedly slammed the president and other republicans on social media. >> abc's stephanie ramos is live at the practice field in alexandria where it all happened. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: diane, kendis, good morning. the crime scene tape is still up here at the baseball field where those lawmakers were getting ready for batting practice yesterday morning but were shot at instead. a blaze of gunshots fired at

republican congressmen at a baseball diamond just eight miles from capitol hill in alexandria, virginia. [ gunfire ] the gunshots erupted at 7:00 a.m. wednesday morning. 26 republican members of congress practicing for their annual charity baseball game against democrats. some seeking refuge in the dugout. >> there's also a victim down in the baseball field. >> reporter: that victim, congressman steve scalise of louisiana, with a rifle shot to the left hip, medevacked off the field. the house majority whip's capitol police security detail, two agents, firing back at the shooter from behind an suv according to witnesses. both officers injured. within minutes local police joining in the gun battle. the shooter, 66-year-old james hodgkinson, is down at 7:14. the unemployed illinois man had reportedly been in the washington area for a couple of months living out of his van and had a long and public history of

anti-trump and anti-republican rhetoric. >> there was an individual middle-aged caucasian male that asked us, you know, hey, you know, is that republicans, democrats? we're like, republicans and he turned and went toward the field. >> reporter: unclear if that was hodgkinson asking the question but he is now dead. in all, four shot, the congressman, one of the capitol police officers, a staffer and lobbyist. two others injured. the president denouncing it as a brutal assault. >> we may have our differences, but we do well in times like these to remember that everyone who serves in our nation's capital is here because above all they love our country. >> reporter: overnight president trump and the first lady met with doctors at the hospital treating representative scalise and the capitol hill police officer. and it wasn't just the field here hit by gunfire.

car windows, local businesses, the local ymca down the street, their windows shattered by bullets. as for the baseball game lawmakers were about to practice for, that charity game is still on for tonight at nationals park. kendis, diane. >> yeah, the first pitch at 7:05 and there's still some tickets available. stephanie, thank you. >> and we're getting some new details on those others who were injured in that attack. in addition to congressman scalise. matt mika is a lobbyist for tyson foods. he was shot in the chest and other areas and is also in critical condition. >> zach barth is a congressional aide from texas. while in the hospital he posted that he was okay. barth was actually texting for help during the shoot-out. he's now out of the hospital, and u.s. capitol police officer crystal griner was shot in the ankle, and officer balaga bailey treated for minor injuries. both officers are expected to make full recoveries. and the fbi is now investigating every aspect of that gunman's life. >> his social media postings are

getting very close scrutiny as pierre thomas explains. >> reporter: police racing to the home of james hodgkinson in a desperate search for clues about the would-be mass murderer and in the 66-year-old's hometown southwestern illinois people shocked. >> he was in a few fights and stuff like that but nothing that would demonstrate violence as far as what he did. >> reporter: the fbi focused on these posts portraying a deep hatred for republicans, even calling president trump a traitor. "trump has destroyed our democracy. it's time to destroy trump and company." and he posted a cartoon critical of congressman steve scalise, who he allegedly shot. he joined anti-republican facebook groups including one dubbed terminate the republican party. his now removed facebook page showing his ardent support of bernie sanders and the senator confirming he volunteered for the campaign.

>> the alleged shooter at the republican baseball practice this morning is someone who apparently volunteered on my presidential campaign. i am sickened by this despicable act. >> reporter: he had no love for hillary clinton either posting, "a nomination for hillary equals a win for trump," but there were run-ins with the law. just two months ago police were called to his illinois home after neighbors complained about dozens of shots being fired. >> i said, i'm going to call the sheriff and report him. i said, he's not stopping. >> reporter: he was only given a warning, but his life was apparently starting to unravel. his wife tells us that he left for alexandria, virginia, two months ago. without work, the building inspector was allegedly living out of a gym bag. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. >> our thanks to pierre there and last night the members of the democratic baseball team invited the republican players to their pregame dinner. >> the republicans got a standing ovation as they entered the democratic club. louisiana democrat cedric richmond said he was looking forward to pitching to scalise,

who is a louisiana republican. he says scalise is both a good friend and a worthy opponent. >> he's a tough, spunky, little fighter. that's just who he is, which is why we have such a love/hate relationship because he's just that kid, guy that won't ever give up, so no matter how many times -- >> richmond also brought louisiana crawfish to the dinner in scalise's honor. he stopped by the hospital twice yesterday to see scalise and plans to visit again before today's game. and congressman scalise is the first member of congress to be wounded by gunfire since gabby giffords. >> yeah, she was gravely wounded while meeting voters in her home state of arizona in her district six years ago. in a statement giffords said, "this shooting is an attack on all who serve and all who participate in our democracy. i am heartbroken for the pain of congressman scalise, the other victims and their family, friends and colleagues who survived." and this sign of unity, members of that democratic congressional baseball team taking time out of

their practice to pray for the attack victims. one said the practice shut down when they got word of what happened. >> and staffers who worked for congressman scalise say he always wore louisiana state university gear to every practice and every game. so at tonight's game, both republicans and democrats will be wearing lsu shirts as a salute to him. >> and quite a tribute, that, indeed. well, much more on this story a little bit later on in this half hour, that ambush on that baseball field. and still ahead, we have breaking news overnight, details on an american port being evacuated after a potential threat. and a new report claiming the president is under investigation for possible obstruction of justice. what the white house is saying this morning. plus, the survival stories after that high-rise fire in london. hear how one mother safely dropped her baby ten stories.

i said, sir, we're not personally investigating you. >> that was james comey testifying last week when he confirmed the president was not under investigation while comey was the director of the fbi. but that may no longer be the case. special counsel robert mueller is reportedly now investigating president trump for possible obstruction of justice. sources tell "the washington post" the president came under scrutiny just days after he fired comey. they say mueller is planning to interview the director of the national intelligence and head of the nsa following reports the president had asked them to publicly deny any collusion and get comey to back off the michael flynn investigation. the president's attorney responded last night saying the fbi leak of information is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal. well, the senate has overwhelmingly approved a wide range of sanctions against russia for interfering in the election. it voted 97-2 to target key

sectors of the russian economy and the individual people responsible for carrying out the attacks. secretary of state rex tillerson urged the lawmakers to make sure the sanctions allow the president flexibility to adjust to diplomatic changes. and breaking overnight, the port of charleston has been evacuated. officials received a threat made against a container ship that had just arrived from new york city. a safety zone of one nautical mile has been established around that ship while the threat is investigated, and we have just learned the coast guard has detained the person who is considered to be the source of that threat. overseas london's fire commissioner says the fire that engulfed a high-rise is finally out. at least 12 people were killed when the tower went up in flames. 18 people remain in critical condition. the commissioner says parts of the building are simply unsafe. survivors are sharing terrifying stories of trapped residents resorting to climbing down ropes made from bedsheets and even more desperate measures. >> from what she was saying, i'm about to throw my baby, please catch the baby.

>> that baby survived a nearly ten-story fall caught by a bystander. the cause of the fire is under investigation, but the bbc reports the cladding on that building has been linked to other high-rise fires. >> and there has been an outpouring of support for those fire victims. singer adele was spotted outside the tower offering help as well and celebrity chef jamie oliver is giving out free food to those people who are displaced. there are so many of them. when we come back, we'll have the latest on the attack on lawmakers at a virginia baseball field. did extreme political talk fuel that shooting? plus, caught on camera, a woman hanging on to a vehicle going more than 50 miles an hour.

and rebooked passengers on later flights. let's take a look at morning road conditions. it'll be wet in the pacific northwest, the northwest and once again florida. drivers should watch out for flooding conditions in the midwest, especially missouri and arkansas. and if you're flying, airport delays are possible in detroit, atlanta, memphis, charlotte and miami. well, the gunman who opened fire on lawmakers in virginia was apparently driven by hatred for republicans. now many are asking if divisive partisan rhetoric has gone too far. >> newt gingrich was among the first to blame democrats immediately after the shooting pointing to a pattern he says of intensifying hostility on the left, but some republicans are viewing the attack as a wake-up call. >> the hate just over political differences has ratcheted up to where it becomes entertainment value, and that has to stop. it's my breaking point. i'm going to do everything i can to make it stop. >> we're all americans, we all love this country, and i hope that out of this tragedy, we can

actually bring together some unity, some common ground. >> some common ground. that congressman echoing the president's call to come together as americans. we're going to have much more reaction to the attack on "good morning america" after your local news. and right now we're learning some new details in a shooting out of san francisco. the u.p.s. driver who killed three of his co-workers apparently had complained of working too much overtime. but a union official says jimmy lam was not angry about that. he had just filed a grievance. the 38-year-old burst into the morning drivers' meeting yesterday opening fire without warning. >> he was right behind me. there was like six, seven shots inside and at least five to six outside. i was just running. i didn't -- i didn't wait to look at the guy. >> i was just scared, just scared, you know, for the simple fact that it happened around us and it's really sad for the victims. >> and two other drivers were injured. lam then killed himself when police approached him. sources say he was a loner who

had mental health issues and was estranged from his wife. police are still trying to determine what set him off. some new developments in the nationwide manhunt for two escaped prisoners described by authorities as dangerous beyond description. police say longtime cell mates donnie rowe and rickie dubose murdered two guards during a brazen escape from a transport bus in georgia. well, this morning, officials have released the photos of the two fallen guards, christopher monica and curtis blue. a reward has now grown to $115,000. overnight north korea admitting it released american student otto warmbier from prison as a humanitarian gesture. later this morning his parents are expected to accuse north korea of terrorizing and brutalizing their son. the 22-year-old former student arrived in cincinnati in a coma. he had served just over a year of a 15-year sentence of hard labor for stealing a poster. and we have some new video of a wild road rage incident in

southern california. take a look at the dark-colored car weaving through traffic. there's actually a woman hanging on to the passenger side door. she eventually lets go and appears to be okay. this all happened monday in santa ana, and there's still no word on what led to this. and we're getting some big news in the world of boxing. the match between two of the most outspoken fighters perhaps in the world is on. >> floyd mayweather jr. and ufc's bad boy conor mcgregor will meet in vegas august 26th. mcgregor shared his excitement on social media by, well, making fun of his opponent's age with a photo of floyd mayweather sr. financial terms for the fight have not been released yet. if you need any more proof that pittsburgh is a sports town, check out the record crowd that turned out yesterday for the penguins stanley cup victory parade and rally. the estimated crowd of 650,000 is actually more than double the size of the city's actual population. >> wow.

lot of stuff. >> the suspect is an employee. >> a local teamster's official said lamb filed a grievance claiming he was working too much over time, and the officials said he was not angry. and he had a history of mental problems and was estranged from his wife, and employees says he has children. >> he kept to himself and did not participate with other drivers. >> this retired ups employee worked with lamb for 15 years. >> never heard anything else about him when it came to management, he would have friction with management. >> and authorities are not sure if he was shooting at random or targeting his victims. >> ups will resume deliveries from san francisco this morning. ups sent this note to customers
