good evening. i'm eric thomas. thank you so much for joining us. it has been a sweltering day here in the bay area. the cool ocean provided some relief, and we saw large crowds at ocean beach and anywhere people could get into the water. at stanford's commencement ceremony many people beat the heat by staying out of the sun under the shade of the upper deck. stanford police reported 18 medical calls during the event, though they did not clarify how many were for heat. and a loov look right now at our exploratorium camera at pier 15. meteorologist has more information. >> in fact, eric, ten cities have officially broken records today as intense heat has taken over the region. look at our official highs. these have just come in in the past ten minutes. concord, 108 degrees earlier this afternoon. we got up to 103 in san jose. 105 in san rafael. 106 in santa rosa. oakland approaching the century

mark. even san francisco a new record at 88 degrees. even at this hour it is still warm to hot out there. triple-digit readings still in effect inland. it's a pretty rare day when san francisco and oakland have the same temperature, let alone in the mid 80s. it's 94 right now in san jose. future tracker temperatures, you can bet it is going to be a warm evening. by 9:00 we're still seeing areas into the 80s. for that fact the heat advisory not only effective overnight but has now been extended. this is now going through thursday night. so this heat wave is nowhere close to being over and we may see warmer temperatures than today. we'll detail that in the full accuweather forecast in a few moments. people of course were seeking out places cooler to beat the heat. reporter melanie woodrow is live in one of the coolest places to spend a hot -- >> reporter: yeah. eric, an absolutely gorgeous day here in san francisco. i think i just heard drew tuma say 88 degrees. well, 88 and feeling great.

take a look. you can see there are still some people here on the beach. a lot of them have been packing up their stuff in the last couple of minutes. they say they're headed out to dinner of course on this father's day. but really enjoying the gorgeous temperatures out here. much more impressive i can say earlier today here in the marina, having been outside here in the marina earlier myself. but really cooling off tonight. almost need a light jacket out here right now, actually. but we saw people really enjoying the heat just an hour or two ago. people that were working out. they were enjoying some time on the beach. they were going into the water. and as you said, a lot of people came here to san francisco today to cool off. in fact, just about everybody we stopped to talk to say they were here to beat the heat elsewhere. >> it was 102 degrees when we left menlo park about an hour and a half ago. so it's really nice to be here where it's a lot cooler with the breeze. >> it's just to cool off. it's too hot down there in the south bay right now, and just want to relax. it's a nice day. we just want to enjoy the bay.

>> reporter: and here's another reason that people say they've been stopping by here, chrissy field this afternoon, that is because there have been a couple of whales that were spotted underneath the golden gate bridge. just another beautiful sight in san francisco on this father's day. a happy father's day to all the dads out there. and really beautiful weather out here in san francisco. melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. >> melanie, thank you very much. a fire burning in los angeles county is now 10% contained. it exploded in size to 1,000 acres last night, but it hasn't spread much since. firefighters say cool weather overnight with little wind helped them out. there's actually been no smoldering for hours. firefighters will continue to seek out hot spots until that fire is out. today's heat forced some dads in the central valley to spend their father's day on the move. more than 300 people had to evacuate along the king's river in tulare county because of flooding. firefighters say a small lake

rose 25 feet in 12 hours, putting homes in an rv resort in harm's way. one tractor and trailer ended up being swamped. crews delivered sand to build a barrier for people who couldn't drive their homes away. police in modesto are investigating a triple homicide involving children. officers found a woman and two young boys ages 4 and 9 dead inside a home in the northern part of the city around 7:30 last night. this picture of the crime scene is from modesto police. they also found a man outside the house who had cut himself on the leg and had an altered level pthat man is in the hospital. investigators say he and the three victims all lived in the home together. they have not revealed their relationship or how the victims were killed. an officer-involved shooting brought all eastbound traffic on the bay bridge to a halt for hours this morning. the chp says an officer was forced to open fire on the driver of a car that was headed directly for them. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has details. >> reporter: it's not where many

drivers wanted to be early this morning. they posted videos of their time stuck on the bay bridge. it all began about 3:45 a.m. chp officers were investigating an eastbound crash about a mile from the toll plaza. officers say a red cadillac tried getting around the traffic backup by using the right emergency lane. the same lane where officers were standing. >> they issued multiple commands, for that vehicle to stop. vehicle wouldn't stop, kept coming. drove essentially at one of the officers. and that officer felt threatened and discharged several rounds at the driver of that vehicle. the driver was struck. the vehicle was brought to a stop. >> the male driver was taken to a hospital. the chp says he's expected to survive. two passengers in the cadillac were not hurt. they were questioned by police. the shooting investigation shut down the eastbound bay bridge for five hours. traffic detoured off the san francisco skyway at 4th street. >> i'm currently on the bay bridge at 6:00 a.m. watching the

sun rise. >> reporter: those who were stuck in the middle of it all took to social media with a lot of frustration. manny fernandez tweeting this shot of drivers out of their cars, walking on the bridge deck. and this picture of a driver boldly standing on the roof of his car. rami tweeteding "in the midst of our despair a hero." chp eventually got drivers turned around through treasure island but sky 7 was overhead as the police investigation with the red cadillac continued into the midmorning. and so did the bridge backup. for police the big question remains. >> trying to determine exactly@driver did what he did. >> reporter: all lanes reopened about 9:30 a.m. on the bay bridge cornell barnard, abc 7 news. a u.s. fighter jet shot down a syrian warplane. a pentagon spokesperson said it was self-defense after the syrian government plane dropped bombs on syrian democratic forces who are u.s. allies. the president is aware of the attack. this is the first time the u.s. has engaged in air-to-air combat

over syria. developing news now off the coast of japan where the u.s. navy has just identified all seven sailors who died in a collision yesterday a container ship slammed into the "uss fitzgerald." much of the crew on the navy destroyer was sleeping. the two victims -- rather the victims include two men from the san diego area, navy divers recovered the victims' bodies today. the president is celebrating father's day as the political world tries to decipher one of his tweets, specifically whether or not he confirmed if he's under federal investigation for obstruction of justice. abc news reporter gloria riviera has the latest. >> reporter: president trump headed back to washington after his first trip to the presidential retreat camp david. trump starting his morning once again tweeting about the distraction of the witch hunt. but it's another tweet from earlier this week keeping the russian investigation in headlines. "i am being investigated for firing the fbi director by the man who told me to fire the fbi director.

witch hunt." >> the president has not been notified by anyone that he's under investigation. >> reporter: trump's legal team saying the tweet was just about a report that he is under investigation for obstruction of justice, not a confirmation. but even one of his most staunch supporters is confused. >> trump has a compulsion to counterattack and he's very pugnacious. i don't think it serves him well. i don't think that tweet helped him. >> reporter: gingrich has been taking aim at the new special counsel in the russia investigation, accusing robert mueller of getting political, hiring too many democrats. >> i think the answer is they want to lay the foundation to discredit whatever bob mueller comes up with. i don't think we should acquiesce in the besmirchment of this good man. >> reporter: this tuesday the president and the entire political world will be watching a special congressional election in georgia. democrat jon ossoff making a strong showing in a traditionally republican district against gop candidate

some small business advocates are fighting to save the state's tax board despite several scandals. on thursday the state legislature voted to strip most of the power from the state board of equalization. audits have shown the board misallocated tax dollars, made unauthorized personnel changes, and opened unauthorized branches. ultimately, the new bill will transfer the appeals of taxpayers to tax courts. >> i think most businesspeople, most working-class citizens would prefer to deal with an elected official who has constituents, who has to answer to constituents, versus a bureaucrat who may or may not even understand tax policy. >> supporters of the change say a newly appointed tax court panel will help speed up the appeals process. many taxpayers have reported waiting years to secure a court date with the board of equalization. spacex is expected to launch two rockets next weekend.

today the california company postponed a launch because of a valve issue. it was supposed to be tomorrow. later this week it will send bulgaria's first geostationary communication satellite to space and attempt to reuse a rocket for just the second time. the second launch will happen at vandenberg air force base next sunday, sending satellites into lower orbit. it will be the second of eight launches to set up a aircraft constellation. helping with tracking. getting ready for anything. how rescuers prepared this morning to handle the crush of crowds at the beach and the possibility of water rescues. and when can we see some heat relief? meteorologist drew tuma up next with the accuweather forecast. experience mighting overrated as another first-time major winner breaks through at the u.s. open. the final round that wi

well, with the beaches packed with people on this warm weekend, rescue crews have to be ready in case there's an emergency in the water. san francisco firefighters posted this video of a training exercise this morning. when the surf is too high to swim out to a victim, a chp helicopter picks up a rescue swimmer and takes them out to save that victim. many people came together to enjoy a yearly tradition on the

streets of berkeley today. abc 7 news was along adeline street near the ashby b.a.r.t. station for berkeley's 30th annual juneteenth festival. the festival celebrates many aspects of african-american culture. historically juneteenth marks word of the emancipation proclamation reaching slaves in texas. that happened two years after president lincoln actually signed that order during the civil war. accuweather finishing off the weekend with several cities setting new records as heat has taken over. and in fact, even hotter air looks to arrive later in the accuweather forecast. we'll talk about that in one second. live doppler 7 along with satellite showing you trying to find any presence of fog to try to cool us off and there is none. it's nothing but sunshine and warm temperatures out there. a live look outside. sutro tower showing you the beautiful bay area. it is busy on the bay. water's one of the places to beat the heat. just a light breeze. unfortunately not strong enough

to bring cooling relief quite yet. numbers right now, look at this. we are still sweating across the entire region. the on exception you probably want to go to half moon bay where 63 degrees. but away from half moon bay well above normal. 105 the current number in brentwood. 104 in san ramon and concord. 85 that number in oakland. after being at 103 earlier today. san jose cooled off to 94. right now 83 in san francisco. and still 98. that current number in santa rosa. here's the call. overnight tonight it's going to be a warm night. we're going to hang on to a lot of this heat we have right now. mid 50s to upper 60s will be the name of the game. you do notice right along the immediate coastline future weather is trying to bring back a very thin layer of fog. future weather showing you tomorrow morning 6:00 in the morning there's that fog right along the immediate coastline. it's not a deep marine layer, meaning that fog isn't going to reach inland, which means it's going to be another hot day across much of the region.

and that fog kind of pulls back from the coast. very similar temperatures once again on your monday. just not as hot as we are right now but still well above normal for this time of the year. 100 degrees or better in concord, fairfield, antioch and livermore. even the south bay. 96 degrees tomorrow in san jose. 84 that number in oakland. a mild 78 in san francisco. 92 in santa rosa. 102 in lakeport. and 87 that high in san mateo. folks certainly hitting the beach. one way to beat the heat. a live look at santa cruz. folks still soaking in that sunshine. and if you are lucky enough to head to the beach tomorrow afternoon, lots of sunshine but a very high uv index. slap on the sun screen, ocean temperature 56 degrees. live doppler 7 along with satellite the culprit for all this heat. a big area of high pressure. and what that does, it acts like a heat pump. it just brings in very warm air from the south. and that is not going anywhere anytime soon. in fact, as we fast-forward into thursday, future tracker temperatures is estimating that we could even see a hotter day
