hot weather and windy conditions provide the perfect ingredients for a stubborn fire. this started hours ago in bonisha and now firefighters say they have hours left to put it out. thanks for joining us today. kristen will be in later today. there's no ac on the front lines of a fire and now no electricity in the neighborhood. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield live for us. >> reporter: where it is very windy, reggie. look behind me. made good progress on that stump

pile. it is now smouldering when before it was burning. they started that as their biggest problem spot, and they still think they will be here for another four to five hours. they want it to be cold to the touch so there won't be any flare-ups. fire turned the morning sky original as intense wind whipped it it up and kept it burning strong for hours. teams of water from the firefighters' hose looked outmatched against this one. >> the water would go out and make a hard left. wasn't even touching the fire. 20 to 30-mile-per-hour winds out here it makes it tough. >> reporter: the wind wasn't the only obstacle the firefighters faced. this fire also had a lot of fuel. it's burning bark piles, wood materials that actually turned to mulch. they had to bring out about 20 pieces of equipment to this battle. >> the problem that we have is that the bark and stuff as the fire goes it starts to smoulder and burro deep inside and we're slowy tearing it apart with

front loaders. >> reporter: the wind blew the smoke away from the interstate towards the water and no buildings or people are threatened so firefighters were able to take their time and attack this one section at a time. >> a little scary. yeah. something like that seems like it could be really hard to put out. >> employees at nearby businesses were sympathetic as they watched the fire fight especially since this is the second time in two years that firefighters have fought a fire here. >> reporter: the heat that we've had the last few days with the fuel and the moisture, the wood puts off heat and creates spontaneous combustion and that's what is happened here. >> reporter: they did lose a fire pole so 238 pg&e customers lost power. pg&e needs to get in and restore the power but it's not safe yet. feels like it will be on around 2:00. feels like everyone else is in there and they are getting a lot of help from as far away as napa

and fairfield. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> if you have our abc 7 news app you were among the first to learn of this fire this morning. we sent out a push alert before 6:00 a.m. download the app and enable the push alerts to get the latest on breaking news where you live. the bay area heat wave is keeping pg&e crews busy around the clock as they try to restore power for those still sweating it out. some in livermore have been without power since yesterday. abc 7 news was there when the electricity went out around 5:00 p.m. during one of the hottest parts of the day. of course, that means no lights and no air. it forced several businesses to close their doors early on what should have been a busy day, father's day. one pete's coffee even asked customers to go home and sent employees home, today. they got new numbers on progress restoring power and right now a little more than 2,000 customers with the lights off. the highest number with that in the south bay and they have restored the power to 167,000 of

the customers who lost power over the weekend. heat climbing once again as we look live at walnut creek. temperatures will only get warmer as we roll through the afternoon. how hot is it going to get, mike? >> hi, reggie. hi, everybody. all depends on where you live. good news for some of us and not so good news for the rest of us. straight to the map. look around the coast and the san francisco bay shore line. places like san francisco, hey where had, half moon bay not in the heat advisory. everybody else and this is through thursday at 9:00 in the evening so dangerous heat for at least three to four more days, and even excessively hot conditions, worse so, in solano county through 8:00 thursday. frequent breaks in the shade. find it, if you can. it's amazing what the shade will do to cool you down. stay hydrated with water and drink it before you get thursday. wear light loose-flitting clothing and check on seniors and pets. this was the hottest day this year.

we could outdo it thursday. >> i don't know if i'm ready. mike you, just mentioned about pets. some owners are not getting the message it's just too hot to leave a dog in the car. napa police posted this photo after a dog had to be rescued from a locked car. someone noticed her at the south napa marketplace shopping center and called police yesterday. the dog's owner was shopping. a thermometer showed the temperature inside that car was 136 degrees. the dog is now at the vet. a reminder, even if it's only 72 degrees outside the humane society says it can get dangerously hot in a matter of minutes and rolling down win a apartment complex. this fire broke out in one of the outer units of the central park apartments yesterday. residents tried to knock down flames with their own fire extinguishers until the firefighters got there. two sets of reinforcements had to be called in to help as crews battled that three-alarm blaze and the extreme heat. >> when we're wearing our full turnout gear, bottles, it's warm enough as it is with it being over 100 degrees this afternoon. it really takes it out of you.

>> four units are now destroyed. tennants of the other apartments in the complex were left without power. in total, six people were displaced from their homes. that severe heat is being looked at as a possible cause for buckling several freeway lanes in west sacramento. caltrans worked into the night to repair four lanes of pavement on eastbound highway 50. the chp got several calls late yesterday. once drivers started to notice the problem and now all the lanes are back open. the heat is sending extra snowmelt into rivers in the area causing them to overflow. two people had to evacuate an rv campground along the king's river because of flooding there l.firefighters say a lake at the campground rose 25 pete in 12 hours. crews had to dump sand to create a barrier between the fast rising water and a nearby restaurant and apartment complex. you can keep track of heat on go the with our nbc news 7 accuweather a. find it free in the app store

and you'll be instantly notified about heat alerts and advisories. a doctor charged with sexually assaulting children, he will be granted bail after a judge heard arguments today in court. how much will still be decided as the prosecutors add another charge. abc 7 news reporter matt keller live for us in santa cruz with the new developments. matt? >> reporter: reggie, prosecutors do not want dr. james kohut released on bail. they call him unstable and suicidal, but the judge ruled against him. dr. james kohut sat slumped in his chair in a santa cruz county courthouse this morning, his attorney trying to get bail, prosecutors trying to keep him in bail. >> mr. kohut represents a significant ongoing danger to the community. our position was that mr. kohut should not be released on any amount of bail. >> prosecutor moore argued in court in recently released documents that for 20 years dr. kohut has had a fixed sexual desire to be a part of multiple taboo families where he has sex

with a mother and daughter and wanting to impregnate the daughter and raise the child sexually. several incidents which are not part of the current charges were detailed in the documents alleging kohut solicited mothers from vermont, florida, australia and sacramento. the judge ruled against the prosecution's opposition to bail. >> the court finds the people have not carried their burden for a no bail order. >> reporter: a new charge was also added today, alleging kohut sexually molested a 13-year-old girl from louisiana while she was visiting santa cruz with her mother that. brings the total number of charges against the neurosurgeon to 11. >> your honor, we're prepared to enter pleas of not guilty to all charges. >> reporter: two nurses are facing charges, rashel brandon from watsonville and emily stevens from arizona. prosecutors are still in the middle of extraditing stephens back to santa ruz. >> in cases like this, there can be additional victims that come forward, and like in any case, not necessarily in this one, but in any case we encourage people

to come forward and come tell the truth. >> reporter: prosecutors say dr. kohut is very wealthy. the judge wants to see some financial documents before he sets the bail amount. that hearing is set for june 28th. reporting live in santa cruz, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> such disturbing allegations. matt, thank you. new details on one of the suspects involved in a highway assault in san francisco. 33-year-old derwayne johnson is one of three suspects charged with assaulting a lyft driver in march near the cesar chavez exit off 101. riders on dirt bikes vandalized the vehicle and ran over the driver, breaking his nose and leg, leaving him in serious condition. johnson appeared in court today and entered a not guilty plea. his bail has been set at $1 million. happening today, religious leaders from many faiths are going to lead a prayer service in san francisco for the victims of the ups shooting rampage. three ups drivers lost their lives when when a co-worker opened a fire during a company meeting on wednesday.

many people have left tributes for mike lefiti, benson louie and wayne chan. the gunman also died after shooting himself. today's service starts at noon outside the ups building on san bruno street. the groups organizing conduct prayer service for all murder victims in the city. the san francisco zoo offering free admission to ups employees and their families for the month of june. in a statement, the zoo said ups has been a loyal transporter of zoo packages for many years, and the shooting to them felt very close to home. they hope the healing power of animals can lend some support to those most affected by this tragedy. still to come on abc 7 news, new information on the death of carrie fisher. what we just learned was found in her system days before her untimely death. and cuba takes a stand. the new response today to president trump's change in policy about travel there.

new this morning, carrie fisher's autopsy reports show she had multiple drugs including cocaine in her system at the time of her death. the full autopsy report was just released. the coroner found she had cocaine, methadone, ethanol and opiates in her system when she suffered a cardiac arrest on a plane last year. even though the drugs were in her system it's not clear how much of a direct effect they had on her death. the findings were based on toxicology screenigs taken when the "star wars" actress arrived

at a los angeles high school. a driver who drove an explosives-laden car into a crowd on the champs-elysees has died. officials told the a.p. a handgun was found on the driver who was badly burned in the explosion. no police officers or passersbiwere injured in the attempted attack. a motive has yet to be determined. and now developments in the overnight attack on a london mosque. the 47-year-old man arrested last night is being held on suspicion of terror offenses. he was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. police believe the suspect acted alone. they are still investigating the circumstances surrounding that attack. searches are now being carried out at a residence in nearby wales. new developments in u.s. relations with cuba. cuban former minister rodriguez has rejected president trump's new policy towards the nation. on friday the president said the u.s. is going to tighten travel restrictions and block business with the island's military

hey, how you doing, just checking out the latest numbers on san francisco to make sure the cooling trend is coming for you after that record high of 88 yesterday. unfortunately, not all of us are going to enjoy this. talk about highlights and we'll start with what's going on as far as today's temperatures. they are dropping just a little bit. temperatures are going to drop because the marine layer is coming. the heat will peek thursday and probably higher than what we dealt with yesterday and a fire danger will be possible wednesday through thursday, so let's talk about what's going on right now, and here's a look at carle the fog as he's known on facebook and twitter. that's bringing some relief. that and a little bit of a sea breeze so it's only going to get to certain areas today. as far as taking the dangerousness or if you want to

use that out of the heat. 11 in concord and 3 in san jose and what does that mean temperature-wise? low 990s in brentwood, san ramon and 93 in los gatos. look a refreshing 14 in oakland. even more so in san francisco. 65, but 84 right now in novato and 56 in half moon bay. temperatures today, how about 92 to 96 through most of the south bay and 96 in san jose and morgan hill and gilroy. a little bit warmer pushing near 100. 85 in milbury. notice the coast today, more cloud cover and cooler than yesterday. mid to upper 60s. about 78 downtown san francisco and around 91 to 95 through most of the north bay. triple digits definitely stick out at coverdale and up towards ukiah and along the east bay shore, 97 in oakland and 848 today. still 13 degrees above your average high of 71. 95 in free president, and the numbers that no one wants to see are in the east bay, and i'll show you those after i show you

we're one and done. >> thank you, mike. happening today, president trump is scheduled to meet with tech ceos including apple's tim cook and amazon's jeff bezos. it's the first meeting of the american technology council which was created last month. president trump's son-in-law jared kushner is the council's senior advisers. members will discuss how to cut government costs and make technology more secure against cyber attacks and also to talk immigration. in april president trump announced a review of the visa program that brings high-skilled foreign workers into the country. new this morning, ikea customers will soon be able to preview and some day even buy furniture through an augmented reality app right on their iphones. launching this fall the app is the result of a partnership between ikea and apple. it will enable customers to see what the furniture will really look like in your homes before you pay for it. ikea says new products will be featured there first, and at some point you may be able to make purchases directly from that app. kevin durant's mom is talking about that magic moment we saw play out at oracle when
