good evening. we start tonight with a

horrifying and mystifying story of otto warmbier a promising student at american university who was arrested in north korea and held there for a year and released only in a coma. today a tragic ending to this story with so many questions unanswered. >> this is the action that may have cost this college junior his life. then 21-year-old otto warmbier attempting to steal a propaganda poster from a hotel in north korea. >> please save my life. please think of my family. >> what followed was a tearful confession and a sentence to 15 years of hard labor. 17 months later warmbier was carries off a plane unable to walk, talk or respond to verbal commands. >> we're thrilled our son is on american soil and i'm able to talk to you on otto's behalf and

i'm able to wear the jacket that he wore when he gave his confession. >> today just six days after that, warmbier died, his parents writing in a statement, otto has completed his journey home. president trump promptly weighing in. >> at least we got him home to be with his parents where they were so happy to see him even though he was in very tough condition. it's a brutal regime and we'll be able to handle it. >> it is not yet clear what impact warmbier's death will have on the already tense situation between the united states and rogue nuclear power. what happened to him is still a mystery. he grew up in small town of suburbs of cincinnati, known to be a high achiever, at his high school graduation, he enrolled at the

university of virginia but in december 2015 made a decision that would radically altar his life. warmbier went to north korea on a five-day visit with a tour group called young pioneer tours offering package tours to quote destinations your mother would rather you stay away from. in an e-mail exchange today with abc news the director of the young pioneers told us this -- it was in the early hours of new year's day that warmbier made a fateful decision to steal that propaganda poster. he was arrested at the airport just as he was leaving on january 2nd. north korea state media claiming he was working to defame the country as a pawn of the u.s. government.

despite his pleas for mercy was sent to a north korea prison. would be the last time his family would ever hear his voice. >> please save my life. >> for months the family had no news of his condition. encouraged by the obama administration to keep a low profile to better negotiate his release. frustrated by the pace though they spoke out on fox news in april. >> to president trump i ask you bring my son home. >> president trump was briefed on warmbier's case in february directing secretary of state rex tillerson to secure the release of of everyone american hostage in north korea. in may secret talks took places in norway eventually leading to a meeting in new york city when the state department learned that warmbier had been in a coma for more than a year. former new mexico governor has been working with the warmbier family to secure their son's release. >> they are in very dire

conditions at these prisons, they don't get proper medical care, some are put in work and labor camps, this is a very cruel regime. if. >> july 12th, arrived demanding his release on humanitarian zbrounds. on june 13th, warmbier was med vacced back to the united states when he touched down he was rushed to the university of cincinnati neuro science intensive care unit. north korea officials say he contracted bocholism after taking a sleeping pill but american doctors dispute that claim. >> i think that's probably the greatest clue to the medical team here is that the loss of brain tissue was across the board. it was everywhere. something that would happen if someone were deprived of oxygen. >> warmbier's brief reunion with his family, bittersweet. his father with this statement to the press. >> i knelt down by his side and hugged him and told him i missed

him and was so glad he made it home. >> tonight the family condemning north korea's actions -- the awful, tortious mistreatment our son received at the hands of north koreas ensured no other outcome was possible. secretary of state tillerson saying this in a statement -- tillerson also demanding the release of three other american hostages who remain in the country. u.s.-north korea relations are increasingly strained. >> i believe that otto's death will have political repercussions. this was a crime against humanity. if there's more sanctions for north korea i'm for it. >> the regime of kim jong-un is so isolated that former nba player dennis rodman is perhaps the most visible diplomatic presence in the country. last week he made a strange
