hair and tries to drag her into the back room of the store. he finally stopped after the woman told him there were surveillance cameras. luckily, the woman was not hurt. police are searching for that man. there are more unanswered questions following the deadly collision between a u.s. destroyer and the massive container ship off of japan. the japanese company that owns the philippines flagged ship is not saying why it took nearly an hour to report the crash, or why the cargo ship kept going for ten miles after slamming into the "uss fitzgerald." seven american soldiers were killed. and a man who spent 23 years in prison for a crime he did not commit has filed a civil rights lawsuit against the former chicago police officer who he says framed him. 49-year-old jose montaines was released from prison last year after serving more than two decades for a 1993 shooting. now, 70 cases of officer rinaldo has reviewed.

abc's martha raddatz has the latest. >> reporter: he arrived in the u.s. less than a week ago, carried off a plane, suffering from extensive brain damage, more than a year since the world heard his plea for mercy. >> please save my life. please save my life. please think of my family. >> reporter: in a statement today, his parents say when otto was carried off that airplane, he looked very uncomfortable. almost anguished. but within a day, the countenance of his face changed. he was at peace. he was home, and we believe he could sense that. but he could not walk, talk, or respond to verbal commands. he passed away surrounded by his family. since the moment their son was sentenced to hard labor for stealing a propaganda poster, the warmbiers were fighting until he was released. >> we're thrilled that our son is on american soil and i'm able to talk to you on otto's behalf

and i'm able to wear the jacket that he wore when he gave his confession. >> reporter: the family clearly blames north korea for otto's death, saying the awful torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the north koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible. president trump made some brief comments before the beginning of a meeting, saying that a lot of bad things happened to otto while in north korea but at least they were able to get him home to be with his parents. the white house also said this deepens the administration's determination to prevent such tragedies, but there was no indication that there will be any response beyond that statement to otto's death. martha raddatz, abc news, washington. >> martha, thanks. investigators in paris are trying to find out more about

there is some extreme heat hitting most of the southwest. take a look at the map. triple digits from arizona to northern california with temperatures soaring at sky harbor airport in phoenix, airlines have cancelled dozens of flights have been cancelled. >> many regional jets have to be grounded when temperatures get above 118 degrees. in the suburb of tempe, a water park was forced to close because of a fire there. it is, however, expected to reopen today. >> visitors to the las vegas strip are warned not to overexert themselves. the strip is often the hottest place in vegas because of the long stretches of concrete. and palm springs residents are concerned about planned power outages with today's forecast predicted at 122 degrees. officials say those outages are being trimmed back to minimize risk. >> and this was here in new york city. take a look at this. as a line of powerful storms rolled through, high winds brought down trees across the area, and heavy rain caused

according to two federal agencies, the earth's temperatures were the warmest ever last year. the u.s. may take a tougher stance against north korea after the death of american college student otto warmbier. the 22-year-old died just days after returning from a year in captivity with severe brain damage. he had been sentenced to 15 years hard labor for stealing a propaganda poster. warmbier's parents say their son was subjected to awful, torturous mistreatment and said once back in the u.s., what else at peace. president trump is calling north korea a brutal regime. saying otto's state is deep into his administration's determination to strategy in the future. in washington today, senate democrats held a late-night talk-a-thon in protest of the secrecy surrounding the gop plan for replacing obamacare. lawmakers on both sides are waiting to see a draft of a bill by a small group of republicans behind closed doors. democrats have been delivering back-to-back speeches to slow senate business.

man. there are more unanswered questions following the deadly collision between a u.s. destroyer and the massive container ship off of japan. the japanese company that owns the philippines flagged ship is not saying why it took nearly an hour to report the crash, or why the cargo ship kept going for ten miles after slamming into the "uss fitzgerald." seven american soldiers were killed. investigators are trying to figure out if negligence was to blame. and a man who spent 23 years in prison for a crime he did not commit has filed a civil rights lawsuit against the former chicago police officer who he says framed him. 49-year-old jose montaines was released from prison last year after serving more than two decades for a 1993 shooting. now, 70 cases of officer rinaldo rivera have been revied. and as a result, so far five men have been released from prison. >> everybody needs to be aware of this.

bee, let's just say it was not the scripps national spelling bee that we all know and love. coming in, there's the winner, josiah. they presented him with a cup, a trophy and stuff like that. he was parading the cup like he was on the pitch at wembley stadium. >> or lord stanley. >> exactly, exactly. rather have that than anything else. next, that night is when the drama really kicked off. this is the new producer's pick. now that waboom is out of there. lee's kicking up all sorts of controversy. kenny is having issues with lee. these guys are just never going to get along, let's put it that way. things are apparently going to come to a head next week on "the bachelorette." blood is shed. there was a "to be continued" at the end of this.
