flechlt alert means for all of us. >> reporter: good morning to you. well, in a nutshell the flex alert means cut back on your energy usage. cal isois asking all of us to limit the usage between:00 and 9:00 both today and tomorrow. officials suggest you run major appliances like your dishwasher, washing machine and drier earlier on in the day. turn off all unnecessary lights and set your therm stat to 78 degrees or higher. we've already seen some power outages around the bay area and this flex alert is meant to avoid widespread issues by reducing the stress on the grid. >> a multi-day event you're going to have time and so we seen them produce some outages which we responded to and then we're expecting another rise in temperatures coming this thursday so we're anticipating basically more

investigator willing back out in moraga today to try to determine what caused the 16-acre grass fire. it happened near a high school. it started at 2:30 yesterday afternoon and threatened about 20 to 30 homes. residents were asked to either shemter in place chose to evacuate entirely. crews were able to containt flames within a few hours. they say it startsed some where on private property on the hillside. you can stay on top of the heat waive with the abc 7 accuweather app. you can download the app and track your forecast on the go. more than six months after the deadly ghost ship fire in oakland they find the cause of the fire is undermtd. these two photos show before the and after of one of the areas inside. investigators found the electrical systems were modified but they can't say if that is the cause of the fire. they haven't reel ruled anything out because of the extensive damage. the 36 people who died, died of smoke inhalation. the coast ship founder and the second in charge face manslaughter charges in seks

this heat also stopping flights all across the west coast today, tons of cancellations in phoenix because of the heat an american airlines this morning has already cancelled 43 flights today. that is up from only seven yesterday. american officials say their jets can't fly when it gets hotter than 118 degrees and, get this, it's going to be a whopping 120 today and tomorrow in phoenix. those cancellations mostly from smaller regional flights to los angeles, palm springs and other california airports. by the way, palm springs also dealing with major heat. haven't seen any flights from the bay area affected. i've been watching but you're going to want to check throughout the day. things continue to heat up here and there. let's check in with mike. thank a lot. i was looking at the temperature in palm springs, 122 today. not a record. it ties a record that was set last year. 122 and it's not a record high. wow. 58 in berkeley right now, 60 in

to peak between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. it could be extended with temperatures r temps expected to climb higher on thursday. they say this heat wave is the biggest single heat event affecting our power use since 2006. the heat is also posing problems for our roads. in santa rosa part of the sidewalk along shah nay road buckled under the trim digit temperatures. this happens when concrete expands because of prolonged heat. neighbors first spotted the buckled sidewalk yesterday, street crews weren't able -- i should say saturday. they weren't able to get to it until yesterday. stores across the bay area there is a run on fans and air conditioners. abc 7 news was at the orchard supply hardware on royal avenue where shelves, nearly empty. one lucky customer was getting the last air conditioner as we were there. the manager says they have more acs and fans arriving regularly. a wildfire is forcing voluntary evacuations this morning. the whole come fire is burning

6-year-old daughter and 18 maryland son were found in his harold on slater street. he was separated from his wife and she called the sheriff's department and she called to say he failed to meet her to hand over the children. they say they tried several times to check object kids. they had to climb through a bathroom window yesterday morning. neighbors say he was a good father but appeared to be on edge in recent days. >> he was having a hard time going through a divorce and there was wishtz kids and custody and all that. >> police say that tler going to be going through court records and family history as part of their investigation. >> a group of jewish students and visitors is suing san francisco state university over alleged anti-semitism and discrimination. the lawsuit centers on a confrontation from last april when the mayor of jerusalem was invited to speak on campus. the suit claims protesters shouted offensive chants and used bull horns while school officialsaldly told police to stand down. the protest successfully interrupted the mayor's speech and the group who hosted him says its first amendment right

another raise. yesterday the california citizens compensation commission approved a 3% pay hike. that snarts december. it's the fitchth raise in as many years for lawmakers that pushes governor brown's salary up to $195,000 and that makes him the highest paid governor in the country. happening today, san francisco super advisor said to vote on a proposal to ban the sale of flavored toy backco. it would prohibit retailers from selling menthol cigarettes, flavored chewing tobacco and lick kids containing nicotine. they say they target minority communities and teenagers. small business owners say the ban is going to hurt them and only promote a black market of flavored tobacco products. millions of dollars in relief is coming to san jose to help flood victims. they passed a bill allotting $5.4 million for flood relief. they say the money will go to how'sing for flood victims. days of heavy rain caused coyote creek to overflow in february. it caused at least whun million dollars in damage to homes and

this morning questions still remain over the death of otto warmbier the american student who was held captive by north korea. the 22-year-old died yesterday, days after he returned home in a coma. he was released from north korea unconscious and unresponsive. the country claims that he contracted botulism. his family said, quote, the awful tortious mistreatment our son received at the hands of the north koreans ensured no other outcome was possible. >> even if you believe their explanation of botulism and a sleeping pill causing the coma, and we don't, there is no excuse for any civilized nation to have kept his condition secret. >> the china-based tour group that took warmbier to north korea said it will no longer take americans there. i do want to jump in with a quick update here. the coroner's office in syne syne ju -- cincinnati saying it's going to officially investigate his death. it will be done at the
