it's pretty warm but it's going to be hotter tomorrow. here is a live view at the golden gate bridge. blue skies there. we have 67 in san francisco. 73 in oakland. mountain view, 77. gilroy, 81. folks are enjoying the warmth. it's 93 at santa rosa. upper 90s to almost 100 at fairfield and concord. 94 at livermore. the heat will be on again tomorrow. heat advisory for all the bay area except the coastline and an excessive heat warning for the area out near vallejo. we might have some record highs. i'll give you a closer look at the seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> this prolonged heat wave has prompted california power officials to issue the first flex alert of the year. today and tomorrow they are asking us to conserve energy to

prevent lack outs. you can see this part. the blue saw that line right there. that's our actual usage. you can see it's below the purple dot t line. that's the predicted usage for today. this is good. power officials say we need to keep conserving. >> expecting another rise in temperatures coming this thursday opinion we're anticipating basing more power outages. >> some simple ways to save energy. tilt blinds upward because less direct sunlight will get in. computer, put it in sleep mode when you're not using it during the day and shut it down completely when done at night. if you're not using any of the appliances on the power strip, go ahead and unplug it. turn off all the lights you're not using.

>> you can also set your air-conditioner five degrees higher. that will save you 20% on cooling costs. remember conservation is most critical between 2:00 and 9:00 p.m. power officials expect the peak power usage the next few days to be the highest in last 11 years. >> about 800 customers across the bay area are still without power due to heat related power outages. a huge tree branch that cracked and dame down causing one of the many east bay outages. traffic lights on was out. it's a good reminder to make sure vehicles are in working order. check our cars, make sure

are in shape. many auto repair shops are seeing more customers. chris nguyen has that story. >> an influx of cooling services. >> reporter: calls for service has been off the hook. >> the excess temperature creates a lot of pressure. any weak points will show itself. >> reporter: auto technicians are doing what they can to keep drivers cool. lydia's ac shut off at the start of a two-hour drive to fairfield over the weekend. she called it painful. >> it was about 100 degrees and that's when we noticed the ac wasn't working. we were just sweating. >> reporter: officer ross lee says it's crucial for vehicles to be up to date on may not nin. >> tires are full of air, co

coolant in the radiator. >> reporter: when the outside temperature hits 95 degrees its trains will travel no faster than 60 miles an hour, which is about 25% slower than the usual maximum speed. steel can expand when it's hot which could lead to track buckling and derailments. back at the auto shop the manager reminds all drivers to stay on top of recommended services. >> those services are more than just replacing parts. there's inspections involved. we can keep an eye on the vehicle and make sure there's no trouble looming. >> reporter: looking out for his customers one job at a time. chris nguyen, abc 7 news. the extreme heat is hitting the southwest. phoenix set a record hitting 119 degrees. that ties for the fourth hottest day in that city ever.

it could get even hotter. forecasters predict it will top out at 120 degrees which is only happened three times in recorded history. the last time was 22 years ago. it's not much better in nevada. las vegas is at 114 degrees right now but would get close to breaking records today and tomorrow. perhaps even gambling with its highest temperature ever observed which was 117 degrees in 2013. this heat wave is causing headaches for some people flying to phoenix. american airlines has cancelled 50 flights because of the swelter. tiffany wilson has the story from sfo. >> reporter: lobster pot hot. that's how one passenger described phoenix today. >> it was insane. it was like stepping into an oven. >> reporter: he flew to phoenix for his college orientation. his flight home was grounded because of the heat. >> my flight got cancelled. i had to someday overnight in

order to make it back here. >> reporter: phoenix resident was on the same flight to sfo. he's a retired commercial pilot. >> i was a pilot when it reached 122 in phoenix. the asphalt was so hot that the airplanes was sinking into it. >> reporter: that was 20 years ago. he says the runways aren't the problem, it's the lift. >> the hotter the air gets, thinner it is. >> reporter: some of the smaller aircraft are certified to operate up to 118 degrees. that's why flights from regional airports into sky harbor int international was cancelled today. phoenix is expected to hit 120 this afternoon. so far no flights from san francisco to phoenix has been cancelled. that's because the larger jet vs a higher operating temperature of 126 or 127 degrees. passengers flying on larger boeing and air bus jets should not be concerned about landing in phoenix. >> if it's a safety risk, they wouldn't fly. >> reporter: the scorching sun

won't cast a shadow for his excitement for freshman year at the university of arizona. >> not at all. i love it. >> reporter: tiffany wilsowilso. people were hurt by severe turbulence on a united airline flight. ambulances met flight 1031. nine passengers and one flight attendant were hurt. the fire department sent a mass casualty response given the number of people hurt. police have charged a fresno man with assaulting a peace officer in connection with the shooting on the bay bridge. the 27-year-old was booked last nig night. he drove his cadillac at officers as they investigated a crash. when he didn't stop, officers shot him. he's been released from the

hospital. the shooting shut down the traffic sunday morning heading into oakland. he's also accused of driving under the influence and violating parole. tears and sorrow filled a high school gym in oakland where dozens of people gathered to remember a teacher killed. abc 7 news was at skyline high school as parents, teachers and staff paid tribute to carlo. the 31-year-old pe teacher was shot in san francisco. he was a father figure and a mentor for many students. >> they said he was a friend to everybody. the way they lost devastating. he graduated from skyline. worked as a youth outreach counselor and returned as a teacher. a go fund me page has been set up to care for his 2-year-old

daughter. a shelter in place is now over after a gas main break in san francisco eureka valley neighborhood. residents were advised to stay indoors in order to minimize exposure to gas. shelter in place lifted just after noon. car jumped a curb in downtown berkeley and hit a bakery. the car shattered a front window at the 85 degrees bakery leaving one customer with a cut on his hand. thankfully it wasn't any worse than that. a woman and two young children were in the car. they cooperated with the police investigation. the san jose city council is considering google's plans. the council will decide whether to enter into exclusive negotiations for the sale of 16 city and municipal owned parcels

in downtown san jose. they want to transform the parcels into a work space that would add 20,000 jobs and would generate millions in tax revenue. critics fear google's ambition would make san jose less affordable for working class families. san jose police are looking for three suspects who robbed a gas station. it happened at the arco station on thursday, may 25th. police just released these. two of the three suspects stole beer from the store. the third suspect pulled a gun and demanded money from the register. they got away with an undisclosed amount of cash. ride share that changes uber is making right now as the city of san francisco takes a closer look at a staggering number of cars on the road. taking on urban sneelhields. the city of berkeley to decide on an unusual stand. will they turn down money for the police department?

whether to continue tactical training for police. urban shield provides training for mass shooting emergencies and disaster response but community groups say it militaryizes police departments. >> it's a program that's utilizing the tools and tactics that are being developed during warfare to be brought back here to be given to our police department. >> the demonstrators want the city council to withdraw from a regional surveillance program and reject federal money for an armored police van. it will be held at long fellow middle school. san francisco's officials are reviewing the ride sharing report that shows what many city drivers know. the streets are filled with uber and lyft cars. >> reporter: as you said, those of us who drive in the city already know how congested the streets are with uber and lyft

cars but now we finally have some real data, some say shocking data. what's happening now is the board members of the san francisco municipal transportation agency are reviewing that report as we speak. the numbers are staggering. the ride sharing report commissioned by the san francisco county transportation authority. ride sharing vehicles averaging more than 170 trips in the city each weekday. more than 5700 uber and lyft cars during peak hours making up 20 to 26% of all vehicle miles in downtown and south of market. the numbers may only be the tip of the iceberg. the report only includes trips in the city. >> using these services to come from san francisco airport or from san mateo or the east bay.

they're not included in this data at all. >> reporter: the report that was commissioned by the city is being reviewed by the san francisco municipal transportation agency. they want to develop policies that can help manage it. they have received many complaints. >> cyclists worked long and hard to get safe infrastructure in this city in time to be filled up with lyfts and ubers drooping and picking people up. there goes the bike lanes. >> reporter: many come from taxicab drivers. >> there's no need for such a large volume of vehicles for hire as we have now. >> reporter: uber's response. >> it's both about us bringing all the parties to the table but also thinking what are the new technologies that can enable us to share a ride and really reduce congestion in a smart way. >> reporter: there you go. as you heard, uber did respond to our request for an interview.

lyft did not return our calls. vic lee. >> what kind of changes can the agency make to lessen the congestion on the streets? >> reporter: dan, that's the $64,000 question. the only agency that can actually regulate these ride sharing company s the state public utilities commission. you might say that the san francisco mta is sort of ham strung with these restrictions. we are told that the board of supervisors and the city attorney's office is looking into that law to see exactly what the san francisco mta can and cannot do under those restrictions. there's some hope that they can do something. >> interesting. thanks, vic. you'll soon be able to tip your uber driver through the app. it's one of several changes confirmed and announced by the company today to deal with complaints by drivers. uber says it's testing the

tipping feature in three markets. seattle, min yneapolis and housn starting today with all u.s. cities to be included by next month. other changes include payment for time spent, waiting for customers and driver injury protection insurance. uber will roll it out within the next six months. you don't have to go for to visit the best small town in the country. according to rankings it's sonoma. they say it's the best calling it napa's rustic less refined and more relaxed sister. it is beautiful up there. >> absolutely. >> and hot. it's going to be pretty hot inland. here is a look. we have sunny skies across the bay area. just to our north some

thunderstorms have been rumbling this afternoon up around lake county and points even partser north. right now these are our forecast features. summer begins tonight. 9:24. temperatures will be rising tomorrow and we'll have intense heat area wide on thursday. at the moment we have about a wide temperature range. 40-degree range from 59 to 99 right now at brentwood. we don't have any triple digit readings now but wait until this time tomorrow and we will. overnight, there might be a spot of damp drizzley weather on the coastline. otherwise just a little fog near the coast. mainly clear skies inland. low temperatures will be generally in the mid to upper 50s although we'll see a few locations inland that won't cool much about 62, 63 degrees. tomorrow look for temperatures rising in triple digits.

100 expected in san to rosa tomorrow. mild on the coast. we'll see mid to upper 80s near the bay. it will be warm there. the intense heat continues through thursday. the heat advisory for most of the bay area continues through thursday with an excessive heat warning in these areas outlined in red. that's virtually all the inland east bay and some spots up in the north bay. the heat is on and continues to intensify. just a look at some of the ro je -- projected highs. anywhere from 103 to 105 at concord, antioch. we height see a couple low to mid-90s. on we go to friday when the heat starts to ease up a bit. it will be warm but maybe only one location will hit the 100-degree mark. same thing on saturday.

the airplanes. across the bay oakland airport is getting more than $37 million from the faa to repave its runway. runway 30 is the runway used by most commercial flights. the airport is coming up with a plane to accommodate the work which will leave the runway closed for an extended period of time starting in september. delta airlines began employing facial recognition for passengers checking bags. if the passenger has a passport they can scan the document at the kiosk. passenger then attaches the baggage tag and drops their luggage off on to the conveyor belt. the airline announced it was testing the use of finger prints to board passengers at washington reagan airport. a former star offensive lineman at cal has come out as

gay and is talk about how painful it was. ryan was named the top offensive lineman in the pac-10 in 2005 and spent five years in the nfl. he told out sports that he got addicted to painkillers to deal with pain but also with being gay. when his career ended he planned to kill himself. a member of the kansas chief training staff introduced him to a drug counselor who helped him he cover. he says he's happy not living a lie and wants to help anyone struggling. daniel day lewis said he is stepping away from the spotlight. he will no longer be working as an actor but no reason will be given. his final film will be in december. he's won three oscars. turning up the heat in the bay area, the triple digit

headlines at 4:30. it's the arizona city is at 119 degrees right now. some planes have never been tested in these conditions. 43 american airlines flights have been cancelled including to sfo. extreme heat can affect engine output requiring greater take off speed and runway length. here in the bay area christian spencer tweeted our heat wave will peak over the next 48 hours with rear record highs. spencer will have the forecast in a few minutes. stores had to shut down because of heat related power outages. many places had trouble reopening. leslie will tell us why at 5:00. lots of people are cranking up their air-conditioning to try to stay cool. that's leading to a search in calls to ac repair centers. matt has the details.

>> 5:00, 6:00, everything gets opened up. >> reporter: bill relies on fans since he doesn't have air-conditioning. he was surprised to get this postcard in the mail. >> i wasn't sure what it was to be honest with you. we've had pg&e for a long time. >> reporter: silicon valley clean energy is the new power supplier for 11 south bay cities. residents are automatically enrolled and receive 100% carbon free energy powered by wind, water and the sun. >> we were informed to buy cleaner power at cheaper rates. >> reporter: the service rolled out in april for 20% of customers. the remaining 80% will come online in july. customers will still experience potential outages on pg&e grid since the utility delivers the power and maintains the lines. >> if your power goes out you will still report that to pg&e and not to us since what we're doing on the back end of supplying clean power for the

residents and businesses in our service area. >> reporter: customers will save money using its electricity. that's an important factor for those who watch their bills. >> they just gradually creep up. i don't know what the percentage is, 5 or 10% every year. >> reporter: it's cheaper and uses 50% renewable energy. if you want 100% renewable energy which is called green prime it's more expensive. customers can always opt out and return to pg&e if they choose. during this heat wave you can use the abc 7 news accuweather app. that's what i've been using to keep track of temperatures. it's cooler now than an hour ago and an hour from now. you can find it free in your phone's app store. overseas soldiers in belgium's capital city have shot a man suspected to have set off a small bomb at the main train station.

no one else was injured in that blast. at brussels central station a bystander photographed the fire set by the bomb. according to a belgium newspaper the suspect was wearing a bomb belt which he detonated. seven people remain hospitalized after terror attacks outside of mosques. a driver plowed his van into a crowd spilling out after services killing one person. the attacker is in custody. few details about him have been released. only that he's a 48-year-old. the u.s. military says it shot down what is called an iranian made armed drone in southern syria. a defense official says an american f-15 fighter jet downed the drone. it's the second time this month

two super sonic bombers over the korean peninsula today in a show of force during joint military drills with south korea. the joint exercises could be seen as a response to release. o.j. simpson will be back in court next month. if his parole is approved, he could be out of prison by october. since 2008, he's been serving a 9 to 33 years sentence for armed robbery and kidnapping. authorities in alaska are dealing with a second fatal bear attack. fish and game officials are tracking a bear, black bear they believe killed a 16-year-old boy on sunday. the boy encountered the boy after he veered off a trail during a foot race. responders shot the bear but it got away. >> we know the bear was hit because we found blood. we don't know how hard, if it was a graze.

it was not a mortal hit or very debilitating hit. it would have traveled for miles. >> a second fatal mauling took place yesterday nearly 300 miles northeast of anchorage. an employee with a gold mining company was killed. fatal bear attacks are very rare with black bears. since 1880, only six deaths in the state have been linked to black bears. now to dramatic video out of a zoo. two adult elephants run to the rescue of a baby elephant. they rush over to the other side to help and they walk into the pool to reach the panicked calf. they are able to guide the young elephant back out safe and sound. >> isn't that touching to see? >> behaving the way humans would. >> in an instant responding. when can you expect to see the senate's new plan?

those deadly wildfires burning in portugal are being contained. many of the people who died were this their cars trying to drive away from the fire.

officials today also denied reports that plane fighting the wildfires crashed. they say none of their aircraft are missing. crews in southern california have slowed the spread of a wildfire along the pacific trail. the 950-acre fire northeast of big bear lake is 10% contained. it's burning away from homes but sections of the pacific crest trail and state route 18 are closed. we'll start with live doppler 7. we have sunny skies across the bay area now and going into this end of spring, beginning of summer how about a little baseball. the a's are taking on the houston astros. it will be 71 degrees and into the clear evening skies. we'll see temperatures dropping into the mid-60s later in the game. overnigh we'll see a bit of fog in the coast and pushing out over the bay. low temperatures in our inland

southwest airlines is now experimenting in san jose and sacramento to try to speed things up by opening up both the front and back exits for dew exw i -- deboarding. southwest expects the process to improve on time performance. i just wonder how can it not work? two doors. mcdonalds is getting some feedback on an experiment being conducted to improve food quality. in some markets they are using fresh meat instead of frozen patties. those burgers are not cooked this advance. that means people wait on average about one minute longer for their quarter pounder. some complain the extra minute is aggravating. it seems customers speed is more important than food quality. i want to hear from you.
