>> abc 15 showing us this great picture. this is the same heat wave that's headed our way. it's going to be brutal. hang in there. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm kristen sze. >> you can take a look at the highs so far. you'll notice that the heat is confined to the inland areas. temperatures have dropped today. you're getting a nice breeze coming through. that's helping. it's not going to last. the next couple of days you'll see the temperatures rise again. we have a heat advisory that's in effect for the bay side communities inland areas and an excessive heat warning. there's some fog off the coastline. the question is, is that fog going to make its way in any time soon and will it cool you off. we're only halfway through the heat wave. i'll be back with an hour by hour look. let you know what's ahead and

when you'll finally get a break. >> thank you. updated power outage numbers were just sent out by pg&e. more than 10,000 customers are in the dark. most of them located in the east bay. >> abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley joins us live where many are without power there. leslie. >> reporter: 120,000. that's the number p grg&e gave for the number of customers affected by this heat wave since sunday. more of them today as you just saw. pg&e has crews standing by from down in san jose all the way up here into clayton and further into central california. they say the worse is yet to come. this morning the worst of it was here in walnut creek.

some lucky kids had swim team. others ventured out but unable to run errands. the countrywood shopping center went dark at 7:00 a.m. shutting down a safeway store, a cvs and restaurants like there black bear diner. >> we asked one gentleman who worked for p gerks ag&e, he sai four hours. they sent everyone hope. >> reporter: this tree limb in a nearby neighborhood was to blame as it took down power lines. all told nearly 5,000 customers in walnut creek and concord endured the heat without electricity for at least a while. pg&e is dispatching crews tonight in san jose, concord and clayton. >> we're using our technology and data from previous years to try to predict where the outages

may happen and get our crews to those right locations. >> reporter: pg&e is worried about thursday, what's predicted to be the hottest day. >> i am scared. i have three kids and heat is definitely wiping the kids out. >> reporter: it's a problem at area day care centers and p preschools. >> you keep them off the playground. >> it's too hot to be outside. we keep them in and keep them safe. it's not just people that overheat in this weather but cars too. the reason experts are saying you'll want to stay below the speed limit when the temperatures heat up. the second week of summer break is just devastating for some students at an oakland school. one of their teachers was killed over the weekend. abc 7 news was at skyline high school as parents and students remembered the 31-year-old pe teacher. he have shot early on sunday in

san francisco during an argument of some kind. he made a difference for many students during his three years as a skyline high teacher. >> he was always interested in what the kids were doing. he cared a lot. where ever he was he was always smiling. >> he was a skyline alum. students left messages of support for his family. a go fund me page has been set up to care for his 2-year-old daughter. you can find the link at abc7news.com. we're learning new details about the tragic death of a 6-year-old santa rosa girl and her 19-month-old brother. it's believered their own father took their lives and his own on father's day. today the children's mother broke her silence. >> reporter: neighbors created this memorial of flowers and stuffed animals outside the apartments. >> i feel sorry for this father and the heart is breaking for

the kids and this mother. >> reporter: police say he was in a bitter custody battle with his wife killed both his children before taking his own life father's day sunday. in an e-mail statemented the children's mother writes they are my precious innocent children that were beyond loved. i am not the only person that is or has gone through horrific unimaginable situation. santa rosa police say they have records of calls beginning in april from both the husband and wife all centered around custody disputes. >> there's nothing that we can determine at this particular point that shows there were any threats made, suicidal, homicide or that would endanger anybody. >> reporter: investigators say they encourage the couple to obtain a custody order which they did this past wednesday. the children's mother says she called law enforcement again this weekend concerned for her children's safety. she writes i sought help on numerous occasions and said many, many, many times my

children were in danger in their father's care. santa rosa police say they are still digging through messages sent between the couple. >> there's a significant amount of conversations that had occurred throughout the weekend. >> reporter: police also say he called child protective sfervics sunday afternoon. >> complaining about living conditions. >> it's all really sad. >> reporter: the children's autopsies are scheduled for tomorrow. in santa rosa, abc 7 news. people have once again been targeted at a popular east bay overlook. someone shot a woman early this morning along grizzly peak hills. police say three men tried robbing the woman and two men who were with her around 3:00 a.m. when the victims refused and droefr away the would be robbers hit the woman in the leg. suspects were in a white suv with damaged driver's side door.

this will prohibit local retailers from selling products. the ban will hurt them and promote a black market of flavored tobacco products. the oakland a's release a new study claiming a new stadium will create a three billion. it dropped some hints as to a location decision. sky 7 flew over the area one possible site. >> reporter: the president of the oakland athletics says an economic study for a new a's stadium hits it out of the park. >> we're pleased with the results. >> the team would equate the $3 billion of economic impact for the city of oakland in 2,000

construction jobs. >> reporter: the a's are looking to win over the community as they work to pick a ballpark site out of three proposed locations. >> the big movement moving stadiums into downtown areas and those stadiums have seen higher increases in attendance in their first year because the stadium becomes the attraction. >> reporter: howard terminal would have a great bay view but getting thousands of people across train tracks would be challenging. it could cause congestion around the college campus. >> there's a wide variety of unique characteristics of each location. we're weighing those. >> reporter: the location would provide the least amount of hurdles when it comes to construction. that's because the large amount of land available. you see the whole stadium is surrounded by parking lot. >> at some point you have to kind of put your stake in the ground and say that's the direction we think makes the most sense. >> reporter: a second study that's location specific is now in the works. the a's will announce a site by

heat has grounded some travelers plans. american airlines delayed or cancelled flights out of phoephe phoenix. smaller aircraft are only certified to fly below 118 degrees. the temperature the phoenix right now is 119. the larger planes were not impacted. american says it does not expect any phoenix flight delays or

cancel laglations tomorrow. chp officers are seeing more cars break down and auto repair shops are seeing more customers. experts are warning about speeding. chris nguyen explains why. >> reporter: as temperatures continue to rise, officer ross lee with the california highway patrol says everyone can do their part to prevent heat related vehicle breakdowns. >> your tires are in good working order. they're full of air. you have a full tank of gas. there's coolant in the radiator. your fluids are topped off. >> reporter: in recent days eight area technicians have seen more customers come in for service. >> it's like over a hundred degrees. i couldn't bear it. it's way too hot. >> reporter: lopez reminds drivers not to go past the speed limit when it's hot.

>> it puts extra load on to the engine. you start wasting a lot more gas. it starts affecting every other component. >> reporter: drivers aren't the only ones taking preventative measures. engineers are busy inspecting the overhead electrical lines on a regular basis. >> if the lines, for example, start to sag from the heat that could cause a problem when the train comes in contact with it. it could cause a power outage. we want to make sure all of that equipment is in the top shape. >> reporter: back at the auto shop, a reminder for drivers to keep up to date on vehi maintenan maintenance. >> there are inspections involved so we can keep an eye on the vehicle and make sure there's no trouble looming. >> reporter: some useful advice as drivers hit the roads. in san jose, chris nguyen, abc 7 news. if you want a visual on how hot it's been, look at this photo by the national weather service in sacramento.

francisco. now to a report about c sections. >> michael is here with that one. >> i was surprised at number of c sections we do in this country. it's really phenomenal. roughly one in every three babies are delivered by c section. half of those aren't medically necessary. consumer reports have suggestions on how to reduce your risk of an unnecessary c section. >> reporter: low risk patient colleen scott planned to have vaginal delivery with her first child but that's not what happened. >> the decision was made by the doctor on call that it doesn't look like the baby will come out naturally and it seems like the best solution would be to do the c section. >> reporter: that's happening more often than it used to. sometimes doctors or hospitals may rush a c section simply because they think labor has gone on long enough or because the maternity ward is busy. >> the biggest risk could be the hospital where you choose to

give birth. >> reporter: to reduce your risk of an unnecessary c section, consumer reports offers some suggestions. >> one thing to do is check out our free hospital online. >> reporter: that lets you compare hospitals based on how often they perform c sections for low risk cases. consumer reports also says if you have a low to moderate risk midwife. they don't do surgery and they'll only transfer you to a doctor if it's medically necessary. also don't rush to the hospital. talk to your doctor or midwife and ask if you can wait until your contractions are three minutes apart. last for one minute and have been like that for one hour. a consumer report says once you're at the hospital, don't rush to induce labor. >> on its on there's not a problem with long labor as long as mom and baby are doing okay. >> you can get consumer report free hospital ratings to see the

scores for the hospital in your area. i have a link for that on our website. go to abc7news.com. look under the 7 on your side section. >> really interesting. listen to this one. ordering a san francisco base human resources start up to pay $3.4 million to its workers for violating the fair workers. they qualified them as exempt from minimum wage and overtime. this is an online app. the start-up incorrectly paid them a flat salary regardless of overtime or training time. google unveiled a new feature that will make searching for work easier. this is the company's commercial for it. you can search for jobs across the online job boards including linkedin, facebook and others.

important. summer begins tonight and the sizzle will continue through the rest of the workweek. let me show you live doppler 7. we're tracking patchy fog. earlier today we have intense development of thunderstorms north of clear lake. i want to show you a times lapse. watch the clouds just developing vertically. it was for an incredible time lapse here and the thunderstorm threat has pretty much diminished. it was north of our region but nice time lapse to look at. here is what you'll be dealing with over the next few days. livermore will continue to cook. 103 degrees tomorrow afternoon. even hotter on thursday. 105. you'll have to wait until the weekend before you actually get much better conditions there. relief is coming. notice from 103 tomorrow to 77 degrees early next week. definitely going to get cooler but not immediateimmediately. as we take a look at a live

picture we have a bit of a breeze. that's helped knock the temperatures down a few degrees and that's just taken the edge off of that warm air that we've had but not inland. it's still hot there. 67 in san francisco. oakland you're at 70 degrees. low 80s around san jose. you're seeing bright blue skies and a bit of fog below. still hot around concord. summer starts at 9:24 tonight. records are possible. there will be a few cities that will be getting close. tomorrow morning starting you out anywhere from the 50s to the 70s. parts of the bay don't be surprised if you see a bit of spotty drizzle for the morning commute. for the afternoon here is how it plays out. 93 degrees in stout bay and san jose. low 90s from redwood city.

the fog will still stick around keeping you comfortable in the 60s. downtown san francisco, 77. in the north bay triple digit heat. 105 in cloverdale. east bay communities you'll be in the 80s. warmer, not too hot. 83 in oakland. head inland and this is where it's another steamy day. 102 in concord. on thursday, the heat advisory that's over inland areas will turn into an excessive heat warning. this is dangerous heat. heat related illness is possible. you'll notice the bay side communities will still be under that heat add vievisory for thu. temperatures will be in the mid 100s. some spots up in cloverdale, clear lake area, 107 degrees. friday, there will be a break from the heat. you'll be in the mid-90s. temperatures dropping a few more

a san jose couple wants help finding their stolen pig. someone took their 100 pound pig from their backyard along with her kennel. the couple says they will not prosecute. they will offer a reward for her return. here is another picture. someone stole her two years ago and dumrned her at a nearby par. we're getting a look at baby birds after a large tree they called home fell. nearly a dozen snowy recuperating. the center shared this video. some of the baby birds are as young as one week old. look at those little guys. all were nesting in the tree when it suddenly snapped in two.
