pride tradition. hey, there, cornell. >> reporter: can you hear it? start your engines. we are a few minutes away from the beginning of this year's march. check out how many people here are lining 18th street. if you've never seen this before this is part motorcycle rally and part parade, but a pride tradition for 25 years now. in fact, all across the city pride celebrations are in full swing. this year the focus is on safety. thousands filled into the park before the march began. time to soak in the sunshine and the pride. at the civic center, the pride festival was on. >> come on by. get some rainbow eyebrows. >> come on down and see us. >> reporter: the second year increased security screenings

are in place at the civic center with metal detectors and bag checks. large bags, alcohol and containers are not allowed in. these women didn't mind the delay getting in. >> it is little much with the metal detectors, but i can see why they want to. >> reporter: the police presence is hard to miss. cops in the crowd and some undercover and some on rooftops. the pride's executive director says this year could break attendance records. >> we're expecting over 1 million people this year. we've seen a larger interest in the parade. >> reporter: there is a protest for the trump administration. alex morrison is this grand marshal. >> thousands of people will be marching to tell you what they need from this administration to

feel safe. >> reporter: politics aside, this weekend is about equality, a time to celebrate who are you. >> happy pride! >> reporter: happy pride indeed. check out how many people are here at the park. thousands of folks started gathering here about noon time. the march is really an all day event. it begins with a rally, festival in the park and caps off with the march which is about to begin in a matter of minutes here on 18th street. they'll go over to 16th and into the castro. the march seems to get larger as the procession continues with a lot of folks joining in. we're live at dolores park, abc 7 news. >> thanks for that. earlier in the day cornell sent this tweet showing the iconic figure that returned to twin peaks. abc 7 news was in san francisco

we've got all of the information on our news app. you can enable push alerts for pride updates all weekend. we're trying to stay on top of this developing news in the middle of pride celebration. just about an hour ago, a viewer shared this video showing smoke and flames pouring out of a second floor balcony near 18th and castro streets. nobody was hurt. this is above the bagel restaurant. police have blocked off traffic on castro between 17th and 18th. the fire is under control and the area should be clear soon. a consequence of our heavy snow this past winter is being played out in the central valley right now. huge runoff from the damn has caused kings river to breach leading to mandatory evacuations of 90 homes, several are damaged. this is happening near the town of kingsburg. kings river has been closed to

all recreational use since march due to potentially dangerous conditions. the man in charge of the department of water resources when the orville damn spillway broke is retiring. he wanted to retire about six months ago, but he agreed to period. during aransitio february's incident led to the evacuati of almost 200,000 people because of the fear the emergency spillway would fail. he led the agency through the crisis pointing out it has sparked a political shift and the need for more water infrastructure. a large tree branch crashed down on top of a car today in san francisco. a neighbor posted these photos on twitter. it happened this afternoon at columbus briefly blocking the cable car line. this is a few blocks from washington square park where back in august a fallen branch left a woman paralyzed. the city called that a freak accident. surveillance cameras helped santa rosa police make several

arrests. police say they received complaints of hundreds of people and cars gathering at the parking lot of the santa rosa marketplace friday night. police provided this picture captured last night by cameras they set up and they were able to arrest six people and towed two of those cars. a 15-year-old boy is accused of a home invasion robbery in freemont and police say he and a second person are accused of robbery of a house. the suspects returned to the neighborhood two other times and on the third instance a group of neighbors got into a confrontation with one of the robbers. we talked with a witness who did not want to show his face on camera. >> our neighbors are pretty cool. they stalled him and he gave a story he was waiting for some asian girl that lived here, had a swimming pool. we knew it was fake. we seen the vehicle. the police plate was fake. same vehicle. we called the cops.

this is very cool. a 109-year-old tree grown from a seed is on the move in idaho. the 10-story tall 800,000 pound tree is in the way of a hospital expansion so it's being moved two blocks to city property. >> these technical challenges probably the vertical height of this tree is unusual. most trees top that we move, even if they're really large, are 50, 60 foot tall. this one over 100 feet tall is
