good president trump does as well as the policies he's working on. >> well, reggie, the president has stayed silent on the topic so far this morning. his last tweet coming just over an hour ago. it reads "crime and killings in chicago have reached such epidemic proportions that i am sending in federal help. 1714 shootings in chicago this year." hawaii has filed a federal court challenge to the president's latest travel ban as it rolls out for its first full day today. the state is asking a federal judge to clarify the scope of the ban and who it applies to. the ban states people traveling to the u.s. from six mostly muslim countries now have to prove a bona fide relationship to someone who is in the u.s. on monday, the supreme court allowed parts of the travel ban to go into effect. immigration attorneys plan to be on standby again today at airports across the country, including sfo, to help international travelers issues. tracking an international story at the "live desk" right

now. a chemical weapons watchdog group is now confirming sarin gas was used in a chemical attack on thiflans in syria in april. more than 90 people died, including women and children. the investigation did not prove who was behind the attack. the u.s. launched missiles at a syrian air base, blaming president bashar al assad for the chemical weapons attack. and this week, the white house warned syria again, if they launch another similar chemical attack, syria will "pay a heavy price." new developments this morning regarding a sexual harassment claim filed against a former commander of the san francisco fire department. the city has agreed to pay $375,000 to settle the claim. sf fire department analyst jessica kennedy charged that she was sexually harassed by former assistant deputy chief kenneth lombardi after she was hired four years ago. details of that alleged harassment have not been released. lombardi resigned in october.

happening today, planned parenthood is closing three clinics in the bay area. the locations are in richmond, vacaville and pittsburg. the closures are largely due to low reimbursement rates in california for providers that serve medical patients. today's closures will leave 20 planned parenthood clinics in its northern california district. happening now, the fourth of july weekend is upon us, and despite the holiday falling on a tuesday, we're hearing that it's going to be historic. >> yeah, aaa predicts that this will be the most traveled independence day weekend ever. abc7 news reporter tiffany wilson is standing by with the peak traffic and travel times. hi, tiffany. >> reporter: hey. good morning to you, jessica. yes, a record-breaking, 44.2 million americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles away from their home this weekend. that's about a 3% increase over last year. now, the vast majority of those people are expected to drive. aaa credits the bump in holiday travelers to a couple of things.

there's strong employment and higher consumer confidence and also cheaper gas than one year ago. while you won't find it in the bay area, the national average for a gallon of gas is just $2.28. aaa asked the folks at the popular traffic app waze to analyze the busiest traffic times on the roads from the greater boston region, but should hold true in the bay area as well. the worst times to travel are today from 2:00 to 4:00 as people start to head out of town. tomorrow, sunday and monday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 to 5:00 on tuesday, the fourth of july. waze also predicts about triple the typical traffic after any holiday fireworks show. so if you have to be on the roads during one of those busy times, make sure to stay safe and just enjoy the ride. live in castro valley, tiffany wilson, abc7 news. >> thank you, tiffany. fire officials in san jose are investigating four fires that broke out on mt. hamilton yesterday. in total, 85 acres of land

burned there. it took firefighters about two hours to bring those flames under control. you can see the location of the fire zone along mt. hamilton road near grant lake. the area that burned had been targeted by fire crews to be used for a controlled burn later this summer to help reduce fire danger. and another fire in san jose forced residents to jump into action to save their homes. >> yeah, flames came close to a neighborhood just off north capital avenue. that's a few blocks away from mayberry road. abc7 reporter katie marzullo has more with the fast-acting neighbors. >> we all got into action. >> reporter: karen abad said her husband was in the garage when he saw the smoke and flames. he called to her and she called 911, but they didn't stop there. >> we also grabbed hoses from our neighbors who weren't home. we called them to tell them to come home, and we all grabbed each other's hoses. >> reporter: they fought back the flames until san jose firefighters arrived. >> i just hoped that nobody's home would burn, and the wind

kept shifting, so you didn't know where it was going. >> reporter: the fire department didn't evacuate homes but gave the wildlife order of silicon valley a mandatory order. >> we took the animals out of the enclosures and loaded them up into their trucks and our vehicles. >> reporter: animals including birds, possums and ducklings. >> when we see something that close with flames and smoke, we take action. >> reporter: it took firefighters about three hours to put out the fire, the third incident of the day. >> we had hamilton, another brush fire at 85 and 87, and this one came shortly after. >> reporter: the fire also threatened the east side union high school district offices. you can see it burned right up to the fence, but the san jose fire department said the flames did not damage any structures or homes. katie marzullo, abc7 news. >> we're going to look at a map of all of the fires burning right now in california, so you can see san jose we were just talking about here, and then you can see where all the fires are in southern california.

we're back at 5:14. the u.s. senate is going to consider two immigration laws, one named after kate sign lee, a woman who was murder ede in san francisco two years ago. the house passed kate's law yesterday, which would enhance penalties for convicted and deported criminals who come back into the country illegally. the man who confessed to killing steinle was a mexican national convicted of seven felonies and he had been deported five times. president trump argues the law makes our country safe again. critics say it would actually do the opposite. the other bill would withhold certain funds from sanctuary cities like san francisco. that bill passed the house as well. in today's "gma first look," tennis superstar venus williams under an investigation after a car crash caused the death of a

78-year-old man. >> she allegedly caused the crash. here's nbc's diane ma sadio. >> reporr: in this morning's "gma first look," tennis superstar venus williams is having to explain her role in a car crash earlier this month that ended up killing a 78-year-old man who was in the other vehicle. according to the police report, williams was driving a toyota sequoia and had a green light when traffic forced her to stop in the middle of an intersection. another driver who witnessed the accident says venus' light turned red with her suv still in the middle of that interaction, and when she was able to drive forward, she stepped right in the way of an oncoming hyundai accent. the police report says that it was williams who was at fault for violating the right of way. williams' attorney is telling abc news "ms. williams entered the intersection on a green light. this is an unfortunate accident, and venus expresses her deepest condolences to the family who lost a loved one." and coming up at 7:00 a.m., we'll talk live to the victim's attorney. with your "gma first look," i'm

diane ma chedo. there are reports that fidget spinners are bursting into flames. fidget spinners have become really popular the last few months. the toys that caught fire have l.e.d. lights and hook up to bluetooth to play music. reports say the toys caught fire while recharging, similar to what we have seen with some hoverboards, and that started in late 2015. the spinners were already on the cpsc radar because children can choke on small parts. if you live in the east bay, you may have noticed your water smelling little strange recently, but officials say do not be alarmed. algae blooms related to the wet winter have caused odor problems for over 200,000 residents in the tri-valley. the water for liver moore, dublin, pleasanton and parts of san ramon is safe to drink but may taste a little musky. officials say all of the winter rain created ideal conditions for algae to multiply during hot summer weather. residents of the bayview and mission districts of san

francisco are getting two weeks of free electric bike rides, courtesy of jump mobility. the brooklyn-based company is the latest entry into the bike-sharing community. starting this week, jump mobility is offering a test period for its distinctive red bikes. the eight-gear bikes which retail for 1,000 bucks have a pretty cool feature, a motor in the front wheel that can tell when you're going uphill and will give you a boost as you pedal. car-sharing has a different look in oakland and berkeley. look at this. the city's partnering in the pilot launch of the bay area's first free-floating car-sharing service and the nation's first one-way car-sharing service that crosses multiple cities. you can now drive to cities like seattle or washington, d.c., and park in a designated spot. the permit-holder under the pilot program is gig car, run by aaa in northern california. the permit is now open to applicants from additional service providers. and look at this. another whale breaching in the

on a different note, one of the year's busiest travel days, protesters are expected back at sfo this morning to demonstrate against the president's revised travel ban. >> now, that ban hasn't even been in effect a full day, and already there is a lawsuit filed against it. abc7 news reporter janine de la vega is live for us at sfo this morning. janine. >> reporter: reggie, the state of hawaii filed an emergency motion asking the federal judge to clarify trump's travel ban. the new restrictions are confusing many. protesters were at sfo's international terminal rallying against president trump's travel ban. it prohibits people from libya, iran, somalia, sudan, syria, and yemen from entering the u.s. unless they meet certain criteria. they must prove to have a bona fide relationship to someone in the u.s. now, the guidelines exclude relatives like grandparents and cousins, and that's why hawaii's attorney general is challenging the policy and asking a federal judge to take another look at
