drivers were on the highway ahead of the busy fourth of july weekend. people on the freway caught completely off guard as the small plane came crashing to the ground. the faa says the aircraft has taken off from john wayne airport. the pilot declared an emergency shortly after he was airborne and trying to return to the airport when the plane crashed. >> the first actions taken was the extinguishment of the fire. >> reporter: firefighters say the two people on board the plane, man and a woman suffered traumatic injury. >> call 911.

traffic on the freeway is severely restricted and expected to be delayed for hours. chaos erupted inside a hospital where a doctor used to work. abc news reporter has more from the scene in the bronx. >> reporter: tense scenes at new york's bronx lebanon hospital. police say a gunman shot and wounded others. forcing an immediate lockdown. >> i saw a doctor. he had like a gunshot wound to his hand. >> reporter: multiple ambulances and police vehicles raced to the scene. a mother inside the hospital tells her son what happened. >> told them anybody go inside the room and they locked the door. >> reporter: another man worried about his wife.

>> she's hiding in the closet somewhere. >> police came in the room and three or four of them with guns drawn to see who we were. they did a head count. the staff here has been great. >> reporter: police escorted staff out of the hospital. more than an hour later after police had swept and secured the scene, they identified the gunman. he is 45-year-old dr. henry bellow. a former employee of hospital. authorities say he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> one doctor is dead. there are several doctors who are fighting for their lives now. >> reporter: the doctors here refusing to evacuate insisting on staying behind the treat the wounded and care for critical patients even as the gunman was still on the loose.

firefighters in the north bay are expecting a busy fourth of july weekend and are ready to fight the flames from the air. >> reporter: they already had a busy day. have you ever wondered what it's like to fly them? we interrupt this with radio call. >> time to go to work. time to go to work. >> reporter: at cal fire air attack base they live for these interruptions during summer months. >> more than likely will launch out of here two times.

>> reporter: this force of 51 planes and helicopters that can arrive at any fire within 20 minutes. >> this is the only legal rush time i'm aware of. >> reporter: he's in his 42nd season. that's him. the man with 13,000 fires in his logbook and when he left this morning 16,997 hours in the air. >> we have about three to five minutes to be in the air when the bell rings. >> reporter: who would have known by the time they return, they would have dealt with three. back at the base all the ground crew can do is listen and get ready to reload. the actual flying is quite technical. pilots drop at roughly 150 feet and 120 miles an hour. above all they follow one basic rule. >> you need to avoid the smoke. >> because?

can launch a small boarding craft to intercept the vessel. coast guard sdmel conduct checks similar to a drunk driving stop on the highway. >> if we witness or discover a vessel that looks to be operating under the influence we'll send a boarding team on board. if that member is determined to be not in compliance so they can prosecute and arrest. >> the increased patrols will last throughout the holiday weekend. part of keeping people safe this weekend including cracking down on illegal fireworks. >> deputies tell us they found about 2,000 pounds of fireworks being stored inside a building. many bay area communities banned all fireworks even safe and sane

in san jose there's concern about plans to cite community groups that feed the homeless. we have the story. >> reporter: at st. james park in san jose, a potential crackdown that some say is unnecessary. >> have we really come to a society to shun those who are in a less fortunate state than we are. it has broken my heart.

>> reporter: faith and community leaders are upset over the possibility of being cited by police for handing out food to the homeless saying it criminalizes those that want to help the needy. >> it puts the churches in the cross fire. we have our religious duty to serve the poor. >> reporter: an ordinance banning the distribution of food without a permit at city parks has been on the books since 2005 but rarely enforced. homeless advocates were told enforcements would begin the august after an up tick in complaints from neighbors nearby. >> there are a total of eight kitchens for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the homeless people in the downtown area with four of those kitchens within walking distance of st. james park. >> reporter: this comes as a new report that shows homelessness is up by 13% over the past two years. although the county has made

progress in reducing homeless veterans and disabled people the number did go up for families. housing costs and evictions were among the leading causes. >> it's hard. anybody could be homeless. >> reporter: just another example of the poor struggling to survive in silicon in workers in san francisco could see their paychecks get a little bigger when the local minimum wage goes up. employers must pay workers $14 per hour >> increasing minimum wage is a one of many ways but a very solid way to help with income inequality. >> many other laws will change

near the creek. beavers have been seen. this is the first reported sighting in this area. people are advised to keep their distance from the animals and their habitat. the humane society of the north bay is facing a feline frenzy. on wednesday the facilities manager found several large area carriers by the side of road all packed with adult cat. 17 of them. most of them will more than ten years old and in various states of health from thin and sickly to obese. officials are worried they will have trouble finding homes for the cats since older animals are more difficult to place. if you can help go do abc7news.c abc7news.com. we have a link to the humane society. older animals make good pets too. >> they're all trained. i know a lot of people are thinking we're not in the triple digits so no worry about the pets being in cars but it will be quite warm. >> especially in our inland areas. we'll see highs over the

weekend. it's still pretty toasty out there. we have a lovely four days ahead going into this four day fourth of july weekend. sunny skies right now. a little breezy along the coastal areas. breezy in other spots as well. we have winds up to 26 miles an hour which is far inland and gusts on the coast. 31 miles an hour at sfo. current temperatures range from upper 50s at the coast to mainly 60s around the bay and generally 70s and low 80s in our inland areas at this moment. skies are clear. no fog there yet. we're not likely to have a lot of overnight. forecast features will see a minor cooldown tomorrow. returning warmer again on sunday and monday and temperatures will taper off again a little bit on the fourth of july which is tuesday. forecast animation overnight shows little fog along the coast. maybe a patch or two out over the bay. we might have early morning spotty drizzle. the fog pulls back away from

much of the coastline and away from the bay and inland areas. we're going to have a sunny saturday going into this four-day weekend. overnight, a little patch of fog. we'll reach locally across the bay and maybe spotty drizzle. you'll see mainly mid-70s. it will be breezy at the coast with highs in the upper 50s to right around 60 degrees. it will be breezy tomorrow as well with downtown san francisco likely to have a high of 64 degrees. up in the north bay bright and sunny and mild but not very warm. highs in the low to mid-80s up to 85. highs mainly in the mid-80s.

disney is making a change to its pirates of the caribbean ride. it will be removing a scene on the blocks for them to buy as a wife. the auction will be auction, surrender your loot. the woman on the auction block will become a pirate. the changes will be made at the paris park in july and in anaheim next year. it's the most recent of several updat updates. disney is the farnts company of abc 7 news. a big surprise for residents in a small town from outside madison, wisconsin. an elephant got loose and took a stroll through a residential neighborhood. a trainer quickly caught up with the elephant about a half hour later. that doesn't sound quick enough for me and escorted him back. no one was injured. the long fourth of july weekend is just getting under way. many people are living downright

there was a close call for a bride who lost her wedding dress just days before the big bay the thank goodness for facebook. they traveled from new york to ohio for their wedding last week. when they arrived, she realized her custom made dress was missing. she posted about the lost dress

on facebook and it went viral. two days later a friend messages her with good news. >> one of her friends was driving to work and sees a wedding dress. it was hanging at the end of a dro driveway on a fence and said i just saw her post on facebook somebody lost a wedding dress. >> she says she may have left the dress on top of her car when she pulled away. oh, goodness. someone found it. they hung it outside in hopes the owner would claim it. the dress was shipped to ohio with plenty of time to spare. the couple will be married next friday. a magician in minnesota said he needed more inspiration so he spent the past year building his own magic tree house. take a look inside. 480 square foot house has two floors and electricity. it's furnished with a couch, bed and other decor. he built this in his backyard so he would have a new place to
