jonathan bloom spent the day with searchers and joined us now with what they found and what they're looking for. >> reporter: richard moss disappeared a month ago, but today the searchers returned in full force. it all happened because of a piece of evidence that was found on this beach that's now giving his family new hope of at least getting closure. >> stuff will be here one day that's not here the next day. >> reporter: that may have led to the first discovery in weeks after 22-year-old richard moss disappeared. >> a local resident found his aaa card washed up on the beach. so we have some definite evidence. >> reporter: volunteers gathered on the beach. combing the sand to sort out what's trash --

>> a lot of discarded clothing around here. >> reporter: and what could be a clue. >> shoes are a little more ominous. >> reporter: according to those who seen video, moss came to this drive through and ordered breakfast. friends say he was headed to a jobsite south of the devil slide tunnel. when the same line of cars drove by a mile and a half later, his was mising? >> how can somebody disappear like that? > reporter: now they're looking for car parts under the assumption his car may have flown off a cliff into the ocean. they're determined to find him. >> his father lives in hawaii, and he's flying in every five days. he's moving heaven and earth to kind his kid. >> reporter: jonathan bloom,

"abc7 news." >> and there's breaking news in fremont where one person has died in a two-vehicle accident. it happened on osgood road. police say the 24-year-old man drive thing orange truck lost control. he was pronounced dead at the scene. the 54-year-old woman driving the car was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. osgood road is closed in both directions. there's no firm time when it will reopen. breaking news out of illinois. a train has derailed in plainfield outside of chicago. several freight cars are off of the tracks. about a dozen at least and a jumbled mess. this is classified as a haz/mat incident, we haven't heard if any injuries have happened. a fiery plane crash shut down the freeway in southern

california. it crashed on the 405 just outside of orange county's john wayne airport after takeoff. >> it's okay, it's okay. >> reporter: moments after a plane crash landed on the south bound lanes of the 405, this motorist captured cell phone video of good samaritans jumping into action to rescue the pilot and passenger from the wreckage. >> luckily the firefighter that they clipped, you know, they were all okay. my main concern that went through my head is i hope they didn't land on anybody's car or somebody else wasn't hurt. >> reporter: others watched in horror as this plane wobbled mid-air and crashed in orange county. >> coming down, coming down, and it kind of tilted to the side a little bit.

then it just hit the center divider, kind of skidded along the freeway and ended up on the side and burst into flames. >> reporter: the crash sent debris flying, despite a holiday weekend, traffic was light. >> we were really lucky that there was not a lot of traffic on the 405, especially in the morning. there's always a lot of traffic on the 405. at that time, traffic was flowing smoothly. >> reporter: the two victims, alert and talking, were taken to the hospital. first responders calling the crash landing extraordinary. >> three weeks either struck the plane or components of the plane, and one vehicle struck the landing gear. >> reporter: fire units from the airport responded to the edge of the runway and began putting out the fire. >> the first unit was the crash unit that arrived on scene.

they were able to lob foam over top of the fence onto the plane itself. so it's good thing that those things can spray for a long distance. >> reporter: reporting near john wayne international airport, "abc7 news." a former co-worker's rage turned deadly in new york city inside a hospital. a doctor hoped fire with an assault rifle, killing one and wounding six others, then took his own life. people scrambled to escape the gunfire inside the high rise hospital. >> at one point somebody said shooter. and everybody got panicked. when they started running, they started locking themselves in rooms. >> it was an isolated incident. appears to be a workplace related matter. but that makes it no less tragic or no less horrible. >> this is cell phone video

motorcycle shop meetup. the ones in hayward were for sale on craigslist. investigators finding what appeared to be a fireworks laboratory. they say off these fireworks are even more dangerous than the explosives the bomb squad typically handles. >> the fireworks are sensitive to heat, shock, and friction. >> reporter: which is why they're in a shipping container. once full, the fire marshal will get rid of them safely. melanie woodrow, "abc7 news." a holiday getaway is under way. aaa predicts a record number of american als will go at least 5 miles from home. we found people had a mix of different attitudes. >> i'm excited to get away for a while. >> i'm used to long drives, just trying to get ahead of the traffic. >> i'm going to stay home and do nothing, just avoid the rush hour traffic.

let's take another look at our breaking news in illinois. a freight train has derailed about 40 miles outside of chicago. there are reports the derailed train cars are leaking oil. this is considered a haz/mat incident and emergency crews are on scene. we're getting our first look tonight at coyote pups in the presidio in san francisco. encounters between coyotes and dogs are on the rise. but a new program is changing that. kate larson is live to show us how the coyote tracking program works. kate? >> reporter: well, the pri sidio in the middle of a big city is in a unique position. they can't move the coyotes out

of the park because that's against the law. they believe only six are in the park, since two of them were killed by cars in the last two weeks. t they're launching a tracking program to try and make sure that people, their pets, and the coyotes safely co-exist. never before seen pictures of coyotes in the presidio. all part of a monitoring program. that jonathan young has been using to track the park's coyote population for the past year. >> trying to understand these animals, their movements, their use of the park, how many are here. >> reporter: a big reason for the program, increased concern about coyote interactions with people and dogs. young says they've had several dozen reports of encounters this spring and summer. people who live here are familiar with their sometimes nuisance neighbors. >> six months ago, my son was on

our patio and a coyote came right up to him aggressively, chased him inside. >> it's kind of nerve-racking, because you don't know if you're going to come across one. my neighbor's dog got attacked by a coyote. >> reporter: pupping season is april through august and september, a time when the parents are extra protective of their new pups. seen here in photos that motion sensor cameras snapped a few weeks ago. >> the parental protective behavior overrides their fear of people trying to scare them away. >> reporter: along with daily tracking, he's using gps monitoring to learn where their spend time. that information allows them to close parts of the presidio, like park and trails, which closed to dogs earlier this month. >> that created a buffer from where the dogs and pups were and

fear and frustration in san jose, homeless advocates are feeling betrayed after officials announced plans to clean up a downtown park. it's been an eye sore for years. >> now the city is catching many by surprise. chris nguyen explains. >> reporter: in the heart of san jose, many call it a park with so much potential. a group of yogis practice their

sacramento, and southern california. they are concerned about their findings. research associate cuts off portions of a lining of a canned food container purchased from an asian food store. we'll take that along with the can's lid and test for the presence of bpa. out of 78 cans purchased, 91% tested positive for bpa. >> the cans are mostly bought from the asian grocery stores. >> each for people like me who don't have an asian heritage, we enjoy asian cooking and using some of these ingredients. >> reporter: canned foods were tested in several countries in asia, australia and canada. bpa has been shown to affect the

reproductive systems of laboratory animals. in 2015, california added bpa to its proposition 65 list of hazardous chemicals known to pose a risk to female reproducti reproduction. last month, a study found 40% of food cans tested, tested positive for bpa. compared to 91% tested in this study. >> that consumer pressure has been less outside of the u.s. so many more cans are still using bpa. >> reporter: but the study has been criticized for not being pier reviewed. they told us scientists in the u.s. and across the world have concluded that bpa is safe for use in food packaging.

the north american metal packing alliance said coatings made with bpa are approved by the food and drug administration. despite that, the industry is move ag way from bpa in canned foods but warning the transition will be slow. tracy woodruff, who studies chemicals at ucsf finds reason for optimism. a study in 2015 of cans tested for main stream grocery stores found 67% tested positive for bpa compared with 40% this year. asian imports were not tested back then. >> it's really amazing that the levels went down. >> for those concerned, tracy says there are alternatives. >> fresh fruits and vegetables. frozen instead of canned. >> reporter: you can get your food cans tested for a suggested donation of $25.
