weather pattern. temperatures mainly in the 50s. san francisco 52. oakland, 58. as well as mountain view and san jose at 56 degrees. here's a pretty shot as well of the santa cruz boardwalk area. so because the winds are coming from the southwest, you notice it's clouzier here at santa cruz. we're dealing with coastal drizzle during the next few hours. mostly sunny for everybody, except at the coast. slightly warmer inland as high pressure builds. i'll have your fourth of july forecast coming up. >> thanks, frances. the san jose earthquakes beat l.a. in a soccer match and intended to make an important statement about respect and civility. the quakes may have won but lost trying to get fans to stop chanting homophobic slurs. abc 7 news reporter cornell re national guard explains. >> reporter: a spectacle at stanford stadium. the earthquakes versus l.a. >> this is our revenge game tonight.

we have to win it. >> reporter: the earthquakes hoping to avoid a repeat of last year's classico. when an offensive homophobic slur was chanted by some fans in spanish. we won't repeat the word. many soccer fans have heard it before. >> i understand some of it is to intimidate the other team or whatever. but i don't really agree with it. >> reporter: before the game, the captain said the chant is not okay. >> we do not want to hear this chant, not tonight, not ever. >> one of the things you run into a lot is that people don't know what they're saying is offensive. and so that one just suggestion that, hey, this is not something that's okay, usually 99% of the time will get people to stop. >> reporter: despite the warning, a small group of fans crossed the line and chanted the slur anyway. security teams told them to stop. this group was not a part of the chant. but some admit -- >> it's kind of a tradition. even though it's bad.

>> i feel like even if you told us to not say it, it's going to keep making us say it. it's pretty sad but it's the truth. it's cultural. >> reporter: others came to watch soccer and not feel uncomfortable. >> i don't think anyone needs to be offended. doesn't matter who you're for. come out and have a good time. >> in the end, quakes beat l.a., 2-1. at stanford stadium, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. more information on the tragic story we brought you yesterday on our show. the chp is calling wilson a suspect in a crash in concord that killed two young children and injured a 3-month-old and their mom. wilson is in custody at highland hospital in oakland with unknown injuries. >> me and my husband send our condolence and our prayers out to the family. >> amica wilson, the wife of this man, wilson jr. says she took her husband to highland hospital in oakland. >> turned himself in to a local hospital. >> he told them what had happened?

>> correct. >> the chp was looking for the man who killed a 5 and 10-year-old boy, injured a 3-month-old baby and their mother driving this dodge durango. investigators say they have evidence connecting wilson to the infiniti which drove across this grassy median off state route 4 and hit the durango on the solano avenue an ramp. the young children were thrown from the suv. >> the infiniti comes across at such a speed, strikes the durango head on in the left rear. catastrophic damage. the infiniti launches up over our heads and lands back here. that's probably close to 100 feet from the collision impact point. that driver immediately flees the scene from eyewitnesses. >> reporter: witnesses tell the chp, the driver of the infiniti got out of the car cut up and bleeding and ran across the highway. i asked the wilsons and their

attorney if lemuel wilson was involved in the wreck? >> we don't know. still trying to find out information. >> the mother is still recovering. in walnut creek. her 3-month-old son is in serious condition at oakland children's hospital. alameda county firefighters are increasing manpower during a fourth of july holiday. a proactive effort to be prepared for a likely increase in fireworks-related fires. abc 7 news reporter lonni rivera tells us heat, dry grass and sparks from fireworks are a recipe for disaster. >> reporter: on mission boulevard in union city, signs already send a message. although some fireworks are legal, don't dare light them anywhere near this hill. >> we've had a lot of messages and bannering. i know it was up earlier today. they have a sign up there as well. >> safe and sane fireworks could be sold in union city in this booth. there's one popular package. >> the name comes from the price.

>> cost $49. >> yeah. >> firefighters will report any use of illegal fireworks. this week alone, law enforcement seized 5,000 pounds of illegal fireworks. as for legal stuff, evans explains what's allowed. >> we sell nothing that shoots in the air or blows up. >> fire crews are out inspecting fireworks stands for safety precautions. >> that they have a fire extinguisher nearby and that the supply they have is under lock and key. it's not sitting out for people to come by. >> once independence day ends, how you dispose of fireworks is important. >> around 2:00 in the morning, people have thrown away the spent fireworks, they haven't watered them down. now we're running the garbage can fires. >> chief whiting says soak the fireworks in a 5-gallon bucket of water overnight, then dispose them a day later. in alameda county, lonni rivera. abc 7 news. several small brush fires were reported yesterday in the

bay area, including this one in san jose near the east ridge mall. no word on how many acres burned and fortunately, no injuries were reported. tens of thousands of bay area employees got a raise a as the minimum wage increased. in san francisco, it went up to $14. and it will be $15 next year. the hourly rate increased in emeryville to $14. in san jose it went up to $12 an hour from $10.50. san leandro got a $12. boost. california's statewide range remains at $10.50 an hour. even though you may have gotten a raise, if you take the bus or ferry, your commute got more expensive. abc 7 news was at fisherman's wharf in san francisco as riders came to grips with new muni fares on the f line. the adult cash fare jumped from $2.350 to $2.75 a ride. fares for children and seniors increased.

a grass valley native and current student at san luis obispo is the new miss california. jillian smith fell to her knees after hearing her name announce as the winner in fresno last night. smith competed as miss yosemite valley. she won $20,000 in scholarship money and will represent california at the miss america pageant in september. the new miss california will make one of her forced -- first appearances during tuesday's fourth of july parade in the bay area in downtown redwood city. congratulations to jillian. we have a lot of fog. we were talking about windshield wipers. >> like the typical summer pattern. the wipers in the morning and drizzle and you can see why with this live shot from exploratorium looking at the transamerica tower. plenty in store for us and i'll have the neighborhood temperatures coming up. >> thanks, frances. illegal dumping taken to a whole new level. neighbors in one inland community really frustrated

illegal dumping problem. this trailer-like structure was left along the cummings skyway in may. one resident has called several county officials because now other people are vandalizing the trailer and dumping even more trash. >> it's getting uglier every day and it attracts more trash. there's a huge dump that's been done right near it. people go, oh, it's okay to dump it. look at how ugly it is and they think it's all right. >> the public works department says consultants are determining whether there are hazardous materials inside that structure. if there are, the materials would have to be removed before the structure can be dismantled and taken away. a driver was arrested after a high-speed chase in southern california last night. the driver of this silver audi was reportedly wanted for reckless driving. no kidding. speeds went higher than 100 miles per hour. after the driver got off the freeway and went into city streets, the chp was able to execute a pit maneuver to stop

that car. the driver was then taken into custody. hospital shooting in new york. some of the patients are improving. doctors say three people listed as very critical are expected to survive. a total of six victims are at bronx lebanon hospital. a former doctor there, henry bellow opened fire killing one person. he reportedly held a grudge after being terminated from the hospital two years ago. bellow died from a self-inflakted gunshot wound. president trump visited a fourth of july celebration in honor of u.s. veterans. but he's taking more heat for his latest tweets aimed at two cable tv anchors. elizabeth her reports, even republicans are warning the president that his remarks may be hurting his political agenda. >> president trump marked this fourth of july weekend with a speech honoring the nation's veterans. >> you've shed your blood,

they will be on market street at 1:00. it will wind down market and back to the plaza. activists who include groups are demanding that congress remove the president from the white house. a low-cost airline in colombia is considering ripping out all the airplane seats and making passengers stand for the entire flight. it would be similar to riding a packed b.a.r.t. or muni train but with stools. the ceo of viva colombia says there's research going on to find out if you can fly standing up and that his airline will be very interested in anything that makes travel less expensive. the carrier has daily flights to miami, but nowhere else in the u.s. several airlines talked about the idea but never actually received approval. the storied eureka theater in the financial district is closing its doors. this is after 45 years. the theater company, it was best known for creating

and commissioning groundbreaking plays. in 1988 it commissioned tony kushner to create angels in america, which premiered at the eureka in 1991. the play went on, of course, to be a huge broadway hit winning a tony award and a pulitzer prize. but the company has fallen on hard times. >> some significant funding left them and made it difficult, if not impossible, to continue renting this space. >> the venue will be renamed the gateway theater and continue to operate under new management. its collection manuscripts and poster will go to the museum of performance and design. san ramon police had to double as goat wranglers after 100 animals got loose in town. officers believe the goats knocked over a fence and escaped from an area where they were eating grass and brush for fire prevention. animal control helped to round up the goats and returned them to the fenced area. hopefully they fixed the fence,

as well. kfc is launching a new ad came pain for its spicy fried chicken sandwich called the zinger. it's also launched the sandwich near the edge of space. this video was just released this morning. it shows a straddle light balloon carrying a cargo of a chicken sandwich lifting off from arizona on thursday. the balloon is expected to come down today. kfc dropped a single coupon for someone to find on the ground. skiing at tahoe on the fourth of july. yep, you heard me right. p p there are people skiing up there and there's no shortage of takers. the video of skiers and snowboarders say 3 inches melts away each day. after 60 feet fell this past winter, 7 feet remain. if you prefer to be in the water

starting early on. but other areas we're going to have to deal with the morning clouds, the fog and drizzle, especially closer to the coast. sunny this afternoon for almost everyone. slightly warmer temperatures inland. high pressure will build there. we have the summer-like pattern that continues and takes us all the way through the fourth of july. highs today will be cool and cloudy at the coast. breezy as well. that's why half moon bay is only going to get up to 59. notice we have the typical summer spread, which means we've got 60s at the coast climbing to 90 inland. san francisco, 64 today for the jazz festival. oakland, 70 degrees. san jose, 82. and really, sunny and mild as well and warm in safr raphael. 80 degrees for the marin county fair. low 90s through lakeport and cloverdale. also in tahoe, they will be getting a lot of sunshine and, of course, you can still go skiing there now, which is pretty amazing. temperatures will be right

around the low to mid-80s for the next few days. it gets cool at night, dropping down to the mid-40s. here's the fourth of july 12-hour planner. for those of you planning to watch fireworks that evening, this is how the day plays out. so we have coastal fog during the morning hours. then notice sunny in the afternoon. most areas clear inland. but then that fog creeps right back in, especially near the golden gate bridge. around 9:00, 10:00. we'll see some fog at the beaches and around the bay. temperatures will be very seasonable throughout the day as well. but our forecast animation on sunday night into monday and this is going to be a repeat pattern for tuesday, does show low clouds through san francisco and to oakland and berkeley impacting visibility there for folks watching the fireworks. but all along the peninsula and the south bay, it is looking pretty clear. so there you should have no problem at all. here's the accuweather seven-day

forecast coming up. kate? thanks, frances. police in little rock, arkansas, are searching for suspects after 25 people were shot inside a nightclub early yesterday morning. two of the victims are in critical condition. abc news reporter adrian bankert has more. >> reporter: gunfire inside the power ultra lounge shortly after 2:00 a.m. more than 24 shots fired in 11 seconds. chaos. >> gunshots go off. hit the round. try to take off running. by the time you take off running, more gunshots came. >> a clubgoer capturing the shots and the screams as people scramble to get out of the line of fire. >> 28 individuals in total were injured. 25 result of gunshot wounds. three as a result of attempting to flee the venue. >> by the grace of god, all of the victims are expected to survive.

>> the downtown little rock nightclub packed for a performance by a memphis rapper. the club's facebook page shows a poster for the event showing a man pointing a gun at the camera. police believe the shooting was the result of a dispute among club-goers. >> it appears there was a disagreement amongst a small subset of individuals at a concert that turned violent because of the presence of rivalries and weapons. >> police believe there y muipl. they're interviewing witnesses, including an off-duty policeman working at the club. the shootings happened after a week of drive-by shootings in little rock. >> this appears to be a continuation of disputes from some of our local groups that have resulted in drive-by shootings. >> adrian bankert, abc news, new york. the man behind the failed bahamas fire music festival has been arrested and charged with wire fraud. 25-year-old william mcfarland created the event with rapper ja

rule. mcfarland promised a life changing music festival, but delivered a disaster instead. it was billed as a star studded spectacle on a secluded island. hundreds were just left stranded. >> no electricity, there was no showers or bathrooms. there was no running water. >> it was about $4,000. what we got was worth closer to zero dollars. >> mcfarland showed investors altered financial statements telling them his company made millions of dollars when it took less than $60,000 in the last few years. he says he is not the villain the government is portraying him as. he could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted. one of the busiest shopping districts is giving us a glimpse of retail and it's green. a street near the trendy shopping district in london. oxford street. it's been transformed into an

during her adventure. her snack of choice, marigolds and daffodils from a garden. >> last location was 8-1-4 in the backyard. >> app hour after the grease escape, trainers showed up and caught miss kelly and escorted her back home. >> i don't think i'll forget getting girls up at 5:00 a.m. and having them excited they're ready to go for the whole day. >> ava pilgrim, abc news, new york. >> sharks may be one of the most evolved predators on the planet. but the system of how they track their prey still holds mysteries, until now. abc 7 news anchor dan ashley reports that the breakthrough by bay area researchers involves other ocean creatures as well. >> reporter: it's never good when sharks smell blood in the water. but scientists have known for several decades that sharks and their evolutionary cousins also use another sense to hone in on their prey. electricity. >> electroreception or sensation. they can detect a small potential differences. >> ucsf physiologist david julius and his team set out to learn how the mysterious

electrosensation works. instead of sharks, they started with ray-like creatures known as skates. >> these are the same size. >> reporter: first, researcher duncan leech created a water maze by sensing a fake electric signal, the skate swims to where the current is coming from. unearthing its dinner in the ocean. >> there would be small crustaceans or fish buried in the sand. as they're breathing or respiration, the beating of their heart, they're generating an electrical field. >> reporter: how does the skate actually hear the electricity? the team isolated molecules in the skate's sensory cells that can process electricity and discovered they worked together as a kind of amplifier. when they blocked the molecules with drugs, the skates missed the target and could no longer sense the electrical field. >> it's amazing we were able to manipulate their electrosensory behavior without interfering with other senses. >> this could provide important clues to human hearing.

right around 9:00, 10:00 in the evening and it will move in through the golden gate bridge. it does look likely that san francisco might have tough firework viewing conditions and into oakland, but elsewhere right now it's looking pretty good. we'll keep you posted on that as well. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. slightly warmer today by a few degrees. inland locations here 90. around the bay, comfortable. in the mid-70s and at the coast it's going to be cool all week. mainly in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees. temperatures drop slightly into tuesday for the fourth of july. they stay that way before they come back up again. we're on this kind of cruise control for weather with the fog in the morning, sunshine in the afternoon. you can expect that for the next few days. >> let's hope that fog pushes off a little bit later on tuesday so we can see the fireworks at 8:00, 9:00. >> i hope our models are wrong and the fog holds off. >> or changes a little bit. >> yeah. frances, thanks.
